Charles Darwin
In 1831, the English scientist, Charles Darwin(1809—1882), sailed off on a long voyage around the world. He saw the ways animals adapted to where they lived.Darwin thought that animals that do not adapt soon die out.He called this idea “natural selection”.Darwin’s scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life.Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history.
Jane Goodall
The English zoologist, Jane Goodall (1934—), has observed chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in Tanzania, Africa, for more than 40 years. She discovered that chimpanzees can make and use simple tools. Before that, scientists thought that only humans could do this. Her observations have changed how scientists understand both chimpanzees and humans.Considered to be the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees, Goodall is best known for her over 55-year study of wild chimpanzees.
Karl von Frisch
The Austrian zoologist, Karl von Frisch (1886—1982), discovered the secret language of honey bees.He saw that some bees did a strange dance when they returned to the hive (蜂房).He realised that the dance was a way to show other bees where to fly to find food. His theory was proved to be true many years later after his book The Dancing Bees was published.
Luis and Walter Alvarez
The American father and son team, Luis (1911—1988) and Walter Alvarez (1940—), made an important discovery that could explain why dinosaurs became extinct. They found that something hit Earth and destroyed the dinosaurs’ habitats. In 1980 Alvarez and his son “uncovered a disaster that literally shook the Earth and is one of the great discoveries about Earth’s history”.

When image-generating models such as Midjourney started the generative AI boom in early 2022, artists started noticing similarities between AI-generated images and those they’d created themselves. Many found that their work had been gathered and put into a massive database and used to train AI models, which then produced copies in their creative styles. Many also lost jobs when potential employers used AI tools to generate images instead of hiring artists.
Now, Artists are fighting back.A team, led by Shawn Shan, a PhD student in computer science at the University of Chicago, decided to build a tool to help. After learning about the impact on artists, they gathered input from more than a thousand artists to learn what they needed and how they would use any protective technology.
Last October, they introduced a useful tool called Nightshade, which adds an invisible layer of “poison” to images to prevent image-generating AI models if they attempt to include those images into their database. If enough poison is drawn into a machine-learning model’s training data, it could permanently break models and make their outputs unpredictable.
The response to Nightshade was overwhelming and acclamatory. The team received praise and encouraging remarks from plenty of artists on social media.Nightshade has been downloaded nearly 3.5 million times. And Nightshade received a distinguished paper award and the Internet Defense Prize at the Usenix Security Symposium, a top computer security conference. These tools have allowed artists to be creative online again, says Karla Ortiz, an artist producing animation.“Through work on Nightshade, some AI companies attempt to cooperate with artists and help them benefit from AI.Some firms are looking into how they could use the tools to protect their intellectual property (知识产权),” she adds.
Next, the team wants to build tools to help regulators inspect AI models and implement laws. They also plan to further develop Nightshade in ways that could make it easier to apply to other industries, such as gaming, music, or journalism.

A huge 42 percent of marriages in the UK end in divorce, the highest rate in Europe. What is happening in the UK to cause such a phenomenon The UK of today is one of the most multicultural countries on the Earth. There are exotic sights and sounds on the street corners of every British city.
Is such diversity a good thing Well, it makes the UK a very exciting place to live in.There are new ideas everywhere. There is great freedom.Yet such freedom seems to come at a cost. Some British people regard ethnic minorities (少数民族) as coming to the UK to steal jobs. When the economy does badly, this feeling increases as unemployment rates rise. So, it could be argued that the breakdown of marriages in the UK is in some part because of the pressures put upon families by wider problems in British society. Many people become stressed when those problems arise, and that can then make their family life unhappy as well.
Another possible reason for the high divorce rate might be that marriage no longer has the same value or meaning for British people as it once did.Church attendance in the UK has been falling for the last 50 years, suggesting fewer people consider marriage a holy thing.Since 1991, there has been a drop of 50 percent in people getting married in church rather than a register office.
Then there is the financial side.In the past, married couples paid lower government taxes than single people. That tax incentive (激励) policy, which used to reduce a couple’s tax by up to 500 in a year, has now disappeared, making the cost to keep a marriage higher.
However, the 42 percent UK divorce rate isn’t the highest rate in the past forty years! Meanwhile, some measures are being taken to strengthen marriage in the UK by the government.
( )28.What does the underlined word “exotic” mean in Paragraph 1
A.Amazing. B.Foreign.
C.Local. D.Familiar.
( )29.According to the text, all the following contribute to the high divorce rate EXCEPT .
A.desire for freedom
B.social problems
C.change of values
D.financial pressures
( )30.What can be inferred from the text
A.Cultural diversity has brought people freedom to criticise others.
B.The rising of the divorce rate indicates the society is falling apart.
C.The tax incentive policy once contributed to steady families to some degree.
D.More British people would get married in the church rather than in a register office.
( )31.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the present situation of the divorce rate in the UK
A.Pessimistic. B.Unconcerned.
C.Doubtful. D.Optimistic.

Job interviews are rarely fun, especially for today’s young people. They usually need to smile anxiously into their laptop webcams, and answer questions as a time ticks down with no human to interact with at all.
Large employers are using these asynchronous (非同步的) videos (AVIs) to cut down job applicants to a smaller pool they can meet in person. Some platforms record applicants answering predetermined questions, usually with a time limit for each answer. In some cases, the recordings will be watched by employers’ hiring managers. In others, the platform’s algorithms will assess the candidate based on what they said or even their facial expressions. The platforms say the process is fairer and less biased than human recruiters (招聘者), leading to better and more diverse candidates making the cut.
However, in addition to caring about whether the technology works as intended, employers need to pay more attention to how the process affects prospective employees. Some researchers have warned that young job seekers feel confused, dehumanised and exhausted by automated recruitment systems.
Jimeet Romen Shah has done seven or so AVIs in the past two years. He tries to “make eye contact” with the camera but finds it hard not to watch his own face on the screen.“It doesn’t feel natural at all. When I’m in a face-to-face interview, I can smile when I’m talking, but when I’m in a video and trying to smile it doesn’t look right.” He worries that if he glances down or up it will look like he is reading notes.“It does feel robotic,” he says.
Employers stand to lose too.AVIs select out people who can talk into a void (真空), not people who can interact well with others, though the latter is more important in most jobs. What’s more, an interview is a company’s first real interaction with prospective employees. It should be a chance for both sides to learn about each other.
It’s easy to get excited about new technology, but employers should listen to the voices of the supposed “digital natives” now subject to it.“If I’m ever on the other side of the table,” Shah told me, “I’m always going to do a telephone call at the least.”
( )32.What do employers use AVIs to do
A.To communicate better with job applicants.
B.To choose job applicants for face-to-face interviews.
C.To examine job applicants’ facial expressions in detail.
D.To motivate job applicants to compete against each other.
( )33.What does Jimeet Romen Shah want to say about AVIs
A.They help him relax throughout the interviews.
B.They make him feel uneasy during the process.
C.They make it hard for him to focus on the camera.
D.They encourage him to pay more attention to details.
( )34.What problem might employers be faced with by using AVIs
A.They might lose the chance to introduce their company.
B.They might be misunderstood by prospective employees.
C.They might fail to learn better about prospective employees.
D.They might leave a poor impression on prospective employees.
( )35.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The negative impact of AVIs on recruitment.
B.The practical application of AVIs in recruitment.
C.The principle of using AVIs to screen job candidates.
D.The difference between AVIs and traditional interviews.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
  阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Rain pattered outside, and the low rumble of thunder was felt more than heard.Inside the cozy living room, 10-year-old twins, Jake and Ben, huddled on the couch, browsing through their favourite songs on the tablet.
“Hey Jake, I think we should perform this one,” Ben said, pointing to a classic track they both loved.
Jake hesitated, “I love that song, Ben, but it has high notes. You know I struggle with those.”
Ben smirked, “That’s why we’re a team, right I’ve got the high notes, and you’ve got those amazing low tones.Together, we’re unbeatable.”
Jake sighed, feeling a pinch of anxiety. The school’s annual singing contest was only a week away, and they had decided to participate as a duo (搭档).Both brothers were talented, but while Ben was confident and had an impressive range, Jake often battled stage fright and doubted his abilities.
“Okay, let’s give it a shot,” Jake finally agreed, taking a deep breath.
The following days were filled with rehearsals. After school, they would lock themselves in their bedroom and practice.Their parents would occasionally hear their harmonies, smiles playing on their lips, proud of their determined sons.
However, not every rehearsal went smoothly. There were times Jake would miss a note, and Ben’s high notes would sometimes waver. There were disagreements over 2pacing, key changes, and even the kind of emotions they should evoke during specific parts of the song.
Yet, what made their bond unbreakable was their unwavering support for each other. When Jake felt nervous about the impending (逼近的) performance, Ben would reassure him.“You have a gift, Jake.Trust in it.And if you ever falter, remember I’m right there with you.”
On the other hand, when Ben struggled with his high notes, Jake was his pillar of strength.“Just relax, take a deep breath, and let it out. We’ve got this, bro.”
Days passed, and the day of the contest arrived. The school auditorium was buzzing with excitement.Families, teachers, and students filled every seat.As Jake and Ben waited backstage, Jake felt his heart racing. The murmur of the audience was deafening, and the weight of the stage lights made everything seem surreal.
“Hey,” Ben whispered, squeezing Jake’s hand, “remember the time we sang in front of our entire family during the reunion It’s the same, just a slightly larger family.”
Jake chuckled, feeling a bit better.“Yeah, a ‘slightly’ larger one.”

Text 10
I’ve always been interested in making money. My father was very proud that I’d been to university—the first in my family to do so, and he hoped I’d become a banker or a lawyer. But instead I saw a chance to make money from sports shoes and started my business in the early 1980s.The business kept growing; by 1990 I had one hundred and twenty shops, and just before I sold the business in 1998, this figure had grown to two hundred and fifty.I made £268 million from the sale and, obviously, I’d made all the money I could ever need.I decided to take time out and enjoy myself.I spent loads of money on race cars and beautiful houses but after a while, I was bored and wanted to work again.I visited Africa for the first time in 2002 and saw I could offer business advice to farmers who were in difficulty.About five years ago, I started lending small amounts of money to people all over the world who had nothing, and who wanted to start their own business.Recently, I’ve been taking part in some projects. We’ve been able to build new schools and set up training programmes that teach children about business. The first of these projects to be completed was a hospital in a small town in Malawi this spring.

A.Amazing. B.Foreign.
C.Local. D.Familiar.

B.The rising of the divorce rate indicates the society is falling apart.
C.The tax incentive policy once contributed to steady families to some degree.
D.More British people would get married in the church rather than in a register office.
( D )31.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the present situation of the divorce rate in the UK

( B )32.What do employers use AVIs to do
A.To communicate better with job applicants.
B.To choose job applicants for face-to-face interviews.
C.To examine job applicants’ facial expressions in detail.
D.To motivate job applicants to compete against each other.
( B )33.What does Jimeet Romen Shah want to say about AVIs
A.They help him relax throughout the interviews.
B.They make him feel uneasy during the process.
C.They make it hard for him to focus on the camera.
D.They encourage him to pay more attention to details.
( C )34.What problem might employers be faced with by using AVIs
A.They might lose the chance to introduce their company.
B.They might be misunderstood by prospective employees.
C.They might fail to learn better about prospective employees.
D.They might leave a poor impression on prospective employees.
( A )35.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The negative impact of AVIs on recruitment.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
Before they knew it, their names were announced. The stage lights shone brightly as they stepped onto the stage, feeling nervous but excited. The familiar melody filled the auditorium, and Jake suddenly felt a surge of excitement mixed with fear racing through his veins.Jake’s heart pounded in his chest, his voice shaky at first. He turned to Ben and tried to avoid the eyes from the audience.Ben kept calm and didn’t respond, but he knew how his brother felt.
Paragraph 2:
Sensing his brother’s unease, Ben subtly squeezed Jake’s hand and continued singing, letting Jake gather himself.Feeling Ben’s peace and strength, Jake turned back and started to focus on the performance with confidence.Together, they navigated through the song, their voices mixing in perfect harmony. As they reached the climax of the performance, Jake closed his eyes, letting the music lead him. When the final note echoed through the auditorium, the audience erupted into thunderous applause.Jake and Ben shared a triumphant smile, knowing that they had overcome their fears together.
