Each autumn, millions of butterflies across the U.S.and Canada fly up to 4,000 km to central Mexico.Travellers can see the butterflies overwintering on the Western Monarch Trail, a 465-mile, road trip-friendly conservation initiative that links over a dozen stops along the route.
Helping the Butterflies
Organisers of the initiative created educational courses in English and Spanish explaining the butterflies’ annual travelling and the challenges they face. The signs also outline ways travellers can help the butterflies recover, such as by supporting chemical-free farms and planting native nectar (花蜜) gardens.
Why Butterflies Fly to the California Coast
Many stops, including Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove and Andrew Molera State Park, are overwintering sites where, from October to February, travellers can see thousands of butterflies gathering in forests in areas with mild temperatures.
Other sites, like the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden and Avila Valley Barn, grow flowers that provide sugary, high-calorie food for the butterflies to eat.Butterflies settling here demonstrate how vital flowering plants are to their survival.
How to Explore the Western Monarch Trail
The butterflies’ behaviour varies at different times of day and depending on the weather. In the mornings, while temperatures are still cool, step out of the cottage in the Fernwood Resort where you stay overnight, and you’ll find many butterflies hanging together on the branches and trunks of trees at the overwintering sites. As the day starts to heat up—typically by late morning or early afternoon—you’ll be amazed at the phenomenon “sunburst”—the butterflies start flying around in search of nearby nectar.Keep your eyes skyward.Don’t grab your camera.Just be in the moment.

One of the advantages of social media is that we get to see aspects of people’s lives that can be rather surprising. In fact, some of the videos that get shared remind us of the many hidden—and not-so-hidden—talents that are out there.
Recently a video was shared of a construction worker taking a break and treating his co-workers to a beautiful musical interlude (插曲) in their busy day.Archie Gould, a painter working for a specialised painting company in Edmonton, was carrying out a job in front of a library.Looking in the window, one of his workmates noticed there was a public piano inside.
Gould explained to CTV News that his workmates were aware that he’d played the piano for years, but he’d never been able to showcase his talents. Therefore on the first day on site, Gould sat down in his paint-stained work clothes to play for his workmates.
“It was so heart-melting.I love classical music to begin with.Seeing him playing exceptionally well, I was totally touched,” his workmate, Kerrie Bates, shared her reaction to Gould’s performance. As for Gould, he was also delighted to have the opportunity to show his workmates that he was indeed able to play the piano.
The performance was shared online, where it notched up an impressive number of views. And Gould come up with why he thought the video had become so popular, “I think half the reason that the video blew up is that I look like a construction worker. No one expects a construction worker to just demonstrate some classical music like it’s nothing.”
However, his performance is not just a lesson in looking beyond a person’s outward appearance. It also reminds us that we should develop our talents gradually and enjoy them as and when we can. While we might not all be able to become professional pianists or singers, there’s so much joy to be had in having a passion and sharing it with others.

A new trend called “praise groups” or “in-need-of-praise” chat groups has become popular on Chinese social media. In Chinese culture, where modesty (谦逊) is valued, openly seeking and giving praise is uncommon. These chat groups provide a platform for people to receive compliments (赞扬) and encouragement, which are often lacking in their daily lives.
To join a praise group, users can pay a fee on e-commerce sites, starting at 50 yuan for five minutes of compliments. The group members will then show the person with praises and kind words. The compliments can be designed for a friend or loved one as well.Participants have found that being praised by strangers can help lift their spirits and improve their self-confidence.
For example, Meng Zha, a college student, tried the service and found it amusing and helpful. She received compliments on her appearance and even some lyrics from popular songs.Ms Meng couldn’t help but laugh at the compliments and expressed her desire to post such high-quality praises in the future.
Praise groups have appeared as a way for people in China to seek and receive compliments and encouragement that may be lacking in their daily lives. They provide a positive and uplifting experience for participants, improving a sense of happiness and self-worth.
Those who support the groups see them as a method of dealing with extremely bad moods (情绪) which are often related to things happening on the Internet.“At first, the purpose of this group is to make us learn to praise others and accept others’ praises confidently. Here we can drop everything, and use our hearts to praise and support others,” one member said.“But the life journey is long and there are some unexpected situations that we can only depend on ourselves to face when there is no one out there to offer help.”

When we, as humans, get slightly injured, we treat our own wounds.Even sometimes we go to see doctors. But in the wild animal kingdom, medical care is much different. For one Sumatran orangutan (猩猩), a facial wound may be lethal because it could cause infection and pain. However, the large orange primate (灵长目动物) found a way to treat himself using a native-growing plant.
Rakus, a Sumatran orangutan, lives in Suaq Balimbing, Indonesia.Sumatran orangutans, with only about 14,613 surviving, are faced with dying out.Biologists study the great apes in their habitats. When they noticed Rakus’s wound they paid attention to it.But what happened three days later surprised them.Rakus applied a plant called Akar Kuning to his wound, creating a protective layer over the wound.
The plant is known for reducing pain and preventing infection, but it is not a food for the local orangutans.
Biologists say, “It is possible that Rakus brought this knowledge from his birthplace. Therefore, it is possible that the behaviour is shown by more individuals like him outside the Suaq research area.”
Luckily for Rakus, his treatment worked and his wound was cured without incident. While other examples of great apes treating wounds have been recorded, the selective treatment of only the wound and the layering of plant material in different consistencies were marvelous (了不起的).

“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mum! What did I do with my books ”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from.It was about some unfinished business in my life.As a kid, I loved everything about school.I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道)to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费).My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought.Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom.I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret.I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses.“That’s the answer,” I said to myself.Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said, “Mrs Schantz, why don’t you come back to school ”
I laughed, “There’s no way! I’m 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts.“This is only an experiment,” I “warned” him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work.Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

M: OK.I got that.I’ll deal with it right away.Thank you.
Text 10
Today I’d like to tell you about some of the famous places in history.
Let’s start with the oldest first.Black Rock Caves have been there for over two million years. And, for half a million years, they were home to people and various animals. You can explore these ancient homes and imagine what life was like for the people who lived here. The caves are open daily from the start of April to the end of October.A special attraction on evenings in August is walk by candlelight.
Next I recommend a visit to the Salter House. This was built by Sir Joshua Salter and dates back to 1765.The Salter family are still living here today. The house became famous in 1982 when the TV series Aunt Dorothy was filmed there. The furniture and paintings are well worth seeing, but the attraction nobody wants to miss is the kitchen. This is where Aunt Dorothy cooked her huge meals.
And don’t forget to visit The Old Port.Maybe you’ll need several hours to see everything there, especially if you take a trip along the riverside as far as the fishing village. There you get the chance to try on traditional clothes from a hundred years ago.You can buy gifts in the old village stores and eat delicious small food in the Tea Shop.If you visit the village factory, you can see how sweets were made a hundred years ago, and taste them, too.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

While other examples of great apes treating wounds have been recorded, the selective treatment of only the wound and the layering of plant material in different consistencies were marvelous

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream.I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game.Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging.During the day, I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do.In the evening, I was a hard-working student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school.I went back again the next semester, and my grades steadily improved.
Paragraph 2:
Linda and I saw each other through all these years. When I was down, Linda encouraged me, “Mum, you can’t quit now!” And when she was down, I encouraged her.I have to say it was a time which was really hard for both of us.But neither of us gave up.At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.
