Text 10
Welcome to the Daily Health Club at the Silver Inn.Today, I want to speak about the importance of our daily diet. Now, I’m sure you all take great care of your health by doing regular exercise, because I don’t see a single overweight person in the audience, and it looks like that some of you just came from the gym.But how many of you are aware of the influence of what we eat and drink on our health And how many of you are in the habit of having an energy drink, or eating an energy bar after a workout and between meals Well, the problem is, these energy foods are often filled with added sugar, which can cause serious damage to our bodies.More and more studies and research show that, sugar consumption increases the risk of many diseases, such as overweight, heart disease, and even some cancers.Yet it is still not easy to find sugar-free foods on the supermarket shelves today. So take a look at your diet and try your best to remove everything that has added sugar in it.

Here are four European music venues (举办场所) that are worth visiting.
Dalhalla, Sweden
The history of this place goes back about 360 million years.A meteorite (陨石) hit the ground and changed the land in this part of Sweden, about 280 kilometres from Stockholm. This place was once a quarry (采石场) where people dug out a lot of stone. The rock walls around the seats make the sound very good.Dalhalla has been used for concerts since 1993 and can hold up to 6,000 people.
St Michael’s Fortress, ibenik
The music has to be good in ibenik on the Croatian coast, because it would be easy to allow your eyes to look beyond the stage at the pretty islands lying in the bright blue of the Adriatic Sea below. This small open-air venue, which has space for a little more than 1,000 people, is inside the walls of the fortress (堡垒), which is hundreds of years old.
St Michael’s Cave, Gibraltar
Some underground venues may feel like caves but this venue in Gibraltar in the south of Spain is one in a real cave.Long fingers of rock look down from above, and colourful lights climb the sides of the cave, where 600 people can watch concerts and other events.
The Arena (场地) of N mes
In the centre of this southern French city, this huge old arena can seat as many as 20,000 people. And every summer, a series of concerts called the Festival de N mes bring musicians from across France and around the world to perform there. There aren’t many Roman buildings that are still in such good condition, so whether or not there’s a concert happening, it’s a place that’s worth a trip.

A.Falling meteorites.
B.Beautiful islands.
C.Colourful lights.
D.Roman buildings.

Mr Smith is one of the most productive and influential bassists (贝斯手) in jazz history.During his 60 years’ career, he has recorded more than 2,000 records, and he has no plan on slowing down.
“Age has not made me think slower,” Mr Smith says.“And it has not made me refuse gigs. What it has made me do is be thankful that I got this far playing an instrument with four strings.”
On 10 May, 2022, For the Love of Mr Smith and Friends took place at Carnegie Hall, which was a one-night 85th birthday celebration.Mr Smith led three different bands performing highlights from his career.
Born in Ferndale, Michigan in 1937, Mr Smith started to play the cello (大提琴) at the age of 10, but switched to bass in high school because he claimed opportunities were limited for black musicians to play classical music. He studied at the Eastman School of Music, and then went on to get his master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music.By the time he was 25, he was one of the most popular players in jazz.
Mr Smith’s most historic recordings came in the 1960s as the bassist in the second great Mr Miles. He says the band—with Mr Miles on trumpet; Mr Coleman and then Mr Wayne on saxophone, Mr Hancock on piano, and Mr Williamson on drums—never rehearsed (排练) before recording.
And Mr Smith has certainly helped a lot of musicians get better.Bassist Mr Clarke says that in the last 50 years, Mr Smith has been “the most important bass player”.“I remember as a young kid, I used to get his records,” Mr Clarke recalls.“I could tell he was very, very professional because the consistency was there from record to record; his sound, his ability, and then his flow.”

Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experience.Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.
A recent study suggests that preterm (早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music.Experts found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems.Music can help recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological (神经的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can stave off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians.Participants were asked to pass some listening tests.Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about a thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety.Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血管的) system.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
  阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was the time for Maria to step onto the stage, which was the moment she had expected for a long time.Maria’s hands started to shake.Sweat appeared on her forehead and her heart set about racing. She knew clearly that this was her moment to finish what her grandpa had started years ago.But as she was about to begin her performance, doubt came to her mind, “Can I really do this ”
Maria grew up alongside her grandpa who was always lost in the world of piano music, and she fell in love with it from an early age.Her grandpa was happy to teach her to play the piano.Whenever Maria started to worry about making mistakes, her grandpa would tell her to just immerse (使沉浸) herself in the music. Her grandpa’s words could always calm her down.Three years ago, Maria’s grandpa passed away. His room was filled with lots of old sheet music.Maria’s fingers ran over the yellowed notes on the final page of her grandpa’s unfinished piano music, which he had been working on until the last day of his life. While Maria was looking at the incomplete work, a fire was lit within her.“I will finish it.I have to,” Maria told herself.
Days turned into weeks as Maria lost herself in her grandpa’s world. She read his notes and listened to the recordings of his other works, trying to get his voice. The melody (旋律) was all she could think about. It played in her dreams and rang in her waking hours.
There were times when Maria felt very sad and hopeless, especially when the notes wouldn’t come. She also doubted herself when she couldn’t finish it perfectly. But then there were moments of pure joy when the music flowed through her as if her grandpa was guiding her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
Maria was brought back to the present by the cheers from the audience. She walked onto the stage, but the worries over possible mistakes made it hard for her to breathe. To finish the music was the dream of her grandpa and the reward for her own sweat and tears.Thinking of that, she took a deep breath and remembered her grandpa’s words:“Music isn’t about perfection, Maria. It’s about passion, about putting your soul into every note.” With a peace of mind, she moved to the piano, ready to put on the performance.
Paragraph 2:
Maria gently placed her fingers on the keys. She felt she saw her grandpa’s smile in her mind’s eye.It seemed that the music was telling a story of love that was beyond time.Maria was lost in the beauty of the music and the memory of her grandpa. When the final note faded away, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience jumped and cheered.Tears streamed down Maria’s face.“I have realised my grandpa’s unfinished dream,” she said to herself.Unit 5 核心素养测评卷

The company gave 26 participants a series of different tasks for five days in a row, including spell checking, mathematical word problems, data entry, and abstract reasoning. The participants completed these tasks while listening to music or no music at all.
The results showed that while music was playing, 88% of participants produced their most accurate test results and 81% completed their fastest work.David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International, told in an interview, “Music is a very powerful management tool if you want to increase not only the efficiency of your workforce but also their emotional state…they are going to become more positive about the work.”
You may have a list of your favourite songs, but not all kinds of music match all homework. For maths or other subjects involving numbers or attention to detail, you should listen to classical music, the study found. In the study, pop music enabled participants to complete their tasks 58% faster than when listening to no music at all.If you’re reviewing your English writing, pop music is the best choice, as it is the best kind for spell checking. It cut mistakes by 14%, compared to listening to no music. After finishing your homework, do you often take time to check your answers Maybe some dance music is suitable for you.
