Dunhuang, China
Dunhuang is an oasis city in north-west China that is home to the magnificent Mogao grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The wall paintings tell an illustrated story of the Silk Roads from the fourth to the 14th centuries.Almost 500 caves have been preserved, housing countless murals and more than 2,000 painted sculptures.Cave 302 from the Sui Dynasty period contains a particularly classic Silk Roads scene: a two-humped camel pulling a wagon with a merchant inside.

Many of China’s ancient architectural treasures crumbled to dust before Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng began documenting them in the 1930s.The husband and wife team were among the first preservationists to operate in China, and by far the best known.Their efforts have since inspired generations of people to speak out for architecture threatened by the rush toward development.
Becoming China’s best architectural historians was no easy accomplishment. The buildings they wanted to save were centuries old and located in distant parts of the country. In many cases, they had to journey through dangerous conditions in the Chinese countryside to reach them.Exploring China’s remote areas during the 1930s meant travelling muddy, poorly maintained roads by mule (骡子) or on foot.Inns were often dirty, food could be polluted, and there was always risk or violence.
Their greatest discovery was the Temple of Buddha’s Light, in Wutai County, Shanxi Province. The breathtaking wooden temple was built in 857 AD, making it the oldest building known in China at the time.
Liang and Lin crawled into the temple’s most forbidding, forgotten areas to determine its age, including one hideaway inhabited by thousands of bats and millions of bedbugs, covered in dust and littered with dead bats.“In complete darkness and among the awful smell, hardly breathing, with thick masks covering our noses and mouths, we measured, drew, and photographed with flashlights for several hours. When at last we came out to take a breath of fresh air, we found hundreds of bedbugs in our knapsack (小背包).We ourselves had been badly bitten.Yet the importance and unexpectedness of our find made those the happiest hours of my years hunting for ancient architecture.” Liang wrote of the experience in an account included in Liang and Lin: Partners in Exploring China’s Architectural Past.
( )24.Liang and Lin raised public awareness of .
A.documenting smashed historical buildings
B.rebuilding historically valuable buildings

Fire ants dig tunnels efficiently by only a small percentage of the group doing most of the work.Freeloaders just sit around while their hard-working colleagues get things done. But might freeloaders actually be necessary for society to function efficiently The answer could be yes.
Fire ants are highly social organisms. So, Goldman, a physicist, and his colleagues wanted to know how individual ants knew what to do without a central leader issuing orders. To find out, Goldman’s team labelled individual fire ants with paint and then watched them dig their narrow tunnels—barely wide enough for two workers.Turns out, just 30 percent of the ants did 70 percent of the labour.“I was surprised that we ended up with so few workers actually doing the work at any one time.” A quarter of the ants never even entered the tunnel.Others crawled inside, but left without digging a single grain of dirt. These idling behaviours ensured the tunnels did not get clogged with insect traffic, which would make the construction process stop.
And when the scientists removed the five most hard-working ants from the colony, others immediately jumped in to compensate (补偿)—with no reduction in the group’s productivity. It seems that it doesn’t matter which ants are working or freeloading at a given time, as long as there is some division of labour to keep the tunnels flowing smoothly.
The study could have implications (影响) for robotics.Imagine groups of robots sent to search rubble (碎石) for disaster survivors, or nanobots (纳米机器人) coursing through our bodies to diagnose illness and deliver targeted medical treatment.Such robot groups will need to avoid getting jammed up in tight spaces. It might be necessary to programme them so some just sit back and watch their comrades work.
( )28.How do fire ants get the work done when digging tunnels
A.Only the leaders do most of the work.
B.They all work under the order of one leader.
C.They all cooperate together to do the work efficiently.
D.Individual fire ants know their tasks and work efficiently.

A.The ants will have no idea what to do.
B.Other ants will take their place and do the work.
C.The tunnels will get blocked and the work will stop.
D.The leader will compensate them and give them food as the reward.
( )31.We can learn from the passage that .
A.fire ants are the most diligent insects
B.scientists may diagnose illness more easily
C.people may feel happy when they watch their colleagues do nothing
D.scientists can deal with robotics better when coming to specific programmes

New students at Eton, starting the school year in September, are not allowed to take smartphones with them.Instead, they will each be given a “dumb” phone that is unable to access the Internet and only allows calls and texts.
Students might blame the psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who popularised the idea that smartphones are responsible for rising rates of mental health problems among young people.Teachers at nearly two-thirds of secondary schools now say they have rules that prevent students from using their phones during the day.
But is there really anything wrong with spending a bit of time watching videos on social media Or taking your phone out while you’re in the supermarket queue to see funny news We might need meaning and purpose and psychological richness in our lives, but surely we need a bit of pleasure too.A study published in April in PLoS One found that spending twenty minutes on social media or watching videos on video websites not only contributed to no negative stress response, but was associated with a decrease in both heart rate and cortisol (皮质醇).
What we get wrong is thinking that we are relaxing just because scrolling (浏览) mindlessly through social media is unproductive and feels like “time out”.There is a significant difference between doing things like being with our loved ones, spending time in nature, or reading a great book and emotional numbing (麻木).As the psychiatrist Anna Lembke argues in her book Dopamine Nation, by endlessly seeking pleasure and stimulation from our smart-phone—which she describes as the “modern-day hypodermic (皮下注射) needle”—we become addicted to such stimulation, and find it harder to find joy in other less immediate things.
But also, by never putting our phones down and never giving ourselves a break from endless stimulation, we are not able to go into the kind of quiet brain state that allows mind-wandering, creativity and deep reflection.
As we all know, if you are not paying for it, then you are the product, and businessmen in the marketplace of attention are constantly adjusting the ways in which they occupy our brain space. We must learn to get more creative and intentional about the ways we choose to relax ourselves and perhaps, even, to enjoy some good old-fashioned boredom.
( )32.Why is the school Eton mentioned in Paragraph 1
A.To raise a doubt.
B.To explain a phenomenon.
C.To introduce a topic.
D.To launch a campaign.
( )33.What does the study published in April in PLoS One suggest
A.Constant use of social media is beneficial to health.
B.Proper use of social media can reduce stress.
C.Watching online videos increases heart rate.
D.Spending time on social media has little effect on people.
( )34.Why does Anna Lembke describe the smartphone as the “modern-day hypodermic needle”
A.Because smartphones can bring new energy.
B.Because people rely too much on smartphones.
C.Because smartphones might relieve pain quickly.
D.Because people will get medical help from smartphones.
( )35.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.We should pay for using smart-phones.
B.Businessmen often control our thinking.
C.Boredom is unacceptable in modern life.
D.We should choose our relaxing ways wisely.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Tess was eight years old when she heard her mother and father talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.
Only a very costly surgery could save him and it was looking like there was no one to loan them the money. She heard her father say to her tearful mother with whispered desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jar from its hiding place. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully.Placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way to Rexall’s Drug Store.
She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some attention but he was too busy at that moment. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. It worked.“And what do you want ” the pharmacist said.“I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages,” Tess replied.“My little brother, Andrew, has something bad growing inside his head and my father says only a miracle can save him now.So how much does a miracle cost ” “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl.I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said.
The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man.He came up and asked her, “What kind of miracle does your brother need ” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.“I just know he is really sick and my mother says he needs an operation. But she can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.” The man from Chicago asked, “How much do you have ” “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered.

Text 10
I went to see a play recently at the local City Theatre with my family. It was really exciting. The play was called “Detectives”.To be honest, when I heard the name of it, I didn’t know what to expect. So I wasn’t really sure I would enjoy it.But in fact, this was a comedy, so everyone in my family liked it—including me! We all laughed a lot.The play itself was full of surprises. The actors weren’t very well-known, but they were good, and the stage was well decorated too.But my favourite bit was the dancing—a group of about 12 people came on every time the music started, and they did everything from street dance to ballet! The City Theatre is wonderful inside. The red seats and the curtains are the same as I’ve seen in our local cinema, but the size of the place really surprised me! It could hold about 1,000 people! My parents thought the price of the theatre tickets was quite reasonable. They’re usually about $50, but they paid $35 each.Mine was $14 because I took my student card with me.

( D )28.How do fire ants get the work done when digging tunnels
A.Only the leaders do most of the work.
B.They all work under the order of one leader.
C.They all cooperate together to do the work efficiently.
D.Individual fire ants know their tasks and work efficiently.

( B )30.What will happen if the most hard-working ants are taken away
A.The ants will have no idea what to do.
B.Other ants will take their place and do the work.
C.The tunnels will get blocked and the work will stop.
D.The leader will compensate them and give them food as the reward.
( D )31.We can learn from the passage that .

( C )32.Why is the school Eton mentioned in Paragraph 1
A.To raise a doubt.
B.To explain a phenomenon.
C.To introduce a topic.
D.To launch a campaign.
( B )33.What does the study published in April in PLoS One suggest
A.Constant use of social media is beneficial to health.
B.Proper use of social media can reduce stress.
C.Watching online videos increases heart rate.
D.Spending time on social media has little effect on people.
( B )34.Why does Anna Lembke describe the smartphone as the “modern-day hypodermic needle”
A.Because smartphones can bring new energy.
B.Because people rely too much on smartphones.
C.Because smartphones might relieve pain quickly.
D.Because people will get medical help from smartphones.
( D )35.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.We should pay for using smart-phones.
B.Businessmen often control our thinking.
C.Boredom is unacceptable in modern life.
D.We should choose our relaxing ways wisely.

The Internet and My Life
Good morning, my dear fellow schoolmates! Today I am very glad to have the opportunity to make this presentation about “The Internet and My Life”.
My daily routine intertwines with digital threads: news, learning, and staying in touch. The Internet, a vast universe, broadens my horizons and contributes to my growth. To truly harness the Internet’s positive potential, I propose three key strategies.First, enhance digital literacy for responsible browsing.Second, foster empathy online, promoting positive discourse.Lastly, regularly unplug, cherishing real-life moments.Setting aside dedicated offline time helps maintain mental well-being and fosters creativity.
In essence, the Internet is a powerful partner when harnessed wisely.Let’s embrace its potential to uplift, not define, our lives.
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2:
In fact, the man was a famous doctor. He promised to help the poor girl. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long before Andrew went home again.Tess’s mum and dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place.“That surgery was a real miracle.I wonder how much it would have cost,” her mum whispered.Tess smiled and she knew exactly how much the miracle cost—one dollar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child.
