But I have never, ever seen or experienced anything like The Gates of Hell①, its flames dazzling② from the bottom of the crater③ 30 metres below, lighting up the Karakum Desert (卡拉库姆沙漠) with burning methane④. My visit nearly a decade ago was an unforgettable experience. In 2015, I landed in Tashkent, the bustling⑤ capital of Uzbekistan (乌兹别克斯坦), the country to the northeast of Turkmenistan, and spent some time exploring that country. I got a haircut and shave, a traditional style—meaning that the barber used an open flame to cut hairs from my face. I washed down meals with cold local beer. After we crossed the border into Turkmenistan, the arid⑥, endless landscapes became even more vast. Finally, pulling into a flat spot tucked⑦ between two hills one afternoon—one of the most places I've ever seen—we reached the Darvaza crater area, where we'd camp that night. First though, our guide told us, we'd be going to see the crater, eight kilometres away.Chasing the sunset, we raced through the Karakum Desert, driving hard on the road to hell. The route wasn't paved at all. We fishtailed⑧ through the sand and kicked up a rooster tail of dust that looked a mile long. Our Turkmen driver pushed the vehicle to breakneck⑨ speeds, music cranked.Eventually,we hustled⑩ toward a flaming crater on the horizon. And there it was.Seeing the flames, my companions and I with excitement. “Hell,” he said in a Liverpool accent, “here we come!”I had expected the rotten-egg smell of sulphur (硫磺), but the gas was almost odourless . And when the shifting winds chased the heat out of the crater, it was an , dry sauna . I had to check my eyebrows to make sure they hadn't been singed off. I circumnavigated the crater several times under the darkening sky, standing perilously close to the lip.Looking back on my visit, in my mind, Darvaza will always be that moment the sun faded, and the stars came up. Standing there on the edge, the night cooling, so many miles of desert around me, in that faraway land. The flames below, fearsome and sublime , burning through the gloam . On the brink of one of the earth's great curiosities, somewhere between the heavens and—yes—hell.eq \a\vs4\al()①The Gates of Hell 地狱之门(位于土库曼斯坦)②dazzle v. 黄昏 on the brink of 在…… 1.have seen 2.an 3.exploring 4.where 5.Chasing 6.Eventually 7.excitement 8.odourless9.to make 10.curiosities1.remarkable adj. I had never seen anything like this before. It was indeed the greatest show on the Earth. We got out of the car, carrying our suitcases and boxes of food into the hut.I placed ham sandwiches, sausages and a bunch of bananas on a small wooden table.I returned to the car and fetched more possessions. It was then that I noticed a small grey monkey sitting on a tree a few metres away and eating a banana.“So cute,” I thought to myself, until I realized it was my banana that he was eating! He was looking at me intently as he enjoyed the final mouthful.I was sure he was saying, “Thank you.” “You're welcome,” I replied.1.Why did the car get stuck A.Because the road was too narrow.B.Because it was out of petrol.C.Because it went through a pool of water.D.Because the author's mother gave wrong directions.2.What was the hut like A.It was square and made of wood.B.It was round and made of brick.C.It was tall and made of stone.D.It was short and made of grass.3.How did the author feel when the monkey ate his banana A.Angry. A man named Bennett shared a video saying his own filtered face recalled happy memories of his late father.Nicole Loehle, a 24-year-old in New Jersey, tested the effect with her boyfriend. It gave her a new viewpoint, she said, she could imagine the relationship lasting into their old age. There's no correct way to age.But it's important to remember that no one can stop time or undo its effects.“I keep trying to view aging as a gift,” Brown said.“Some people don't get to age, unluckily.”【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。 1.What can people do with the “Time Travel” filter A.Recover from a sad mood.B.Recall their happy childhood.C.Foresee their aging appearance.D.Remove their wrinkles and sunspots.C 根据第一段中的“People fell in love with...slowly getting older, complete with wrinkles and sunspots.” 2.What are paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about A.Reminder of the flight of time.B.Instructions on using the aging filter.C.Working principle of the aging filter.D.Reactions to the aging effect of the filter.D 根据第三段中的“Not everyone is pleased about this...she pointed out.”以及第四段中的“For other people, the ‘Time Travel’ filter brought up unexpected positive feelings.” 3.What is Brown's attitude towards aging A.Optimistic. calendar but the migrations of sea creatures.” She can hunt and fish the same way her ancestors did, traveling by dog sled and sleeping in the wooden hut.In Greenland's northernmost town, the old ways are still alive. But those ways are under threat.Human-caused climate change has disturbed weather patterns and pushed the rhythms of animals out of tune with the ice and sun.Residents struggle to earn a living through hunting and fishing, leaving them unable to afford the imported oil that keeps their homes warm and lit during the long arctic night. The high cost of electricity and heat has forced some people to abandon their traditional livelihoods—or to leave the town altogether.“Qaanaaq residents should be able to heat their homes without sacrificing their culture,” Oshima said. But that will require them to abandon the culprit behind their challenges of climate change and energy security: fossil fuels.Instead, drawing power from local wind and sunshine can reduce the cost of living in Qaanaaq, easing financial pressures on residents who already live at the edge of survival and it can help the town do its part to control the planet-warming pollution that threatens its very existence.Together with scientists and engineers from Dartmouth College, Oshima is working to bring renewable energy to one of the most remote places on Earth. The effort is in its infancy, with Oshima's partners still development they hope to install. To succeed in such an isolated and harsh environment, they are leaning on the expertise of those who thrived in this landscape for generations. Each design is intended specifically for conditions in Qaanaaq and tested by the residents themselves.Dartmouth College engineer Mary albert, the U.S. co-leader for the project, sees it as a potential model for sustainability efforts the world over.“It's cogeneration of knowledge,” she said, “so Qaanaaq residents can continue to live where they want to live and how they want to live.”【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。 5.Why do some residents leave the town altogether A.They lack living necessities.B.Fewer B.Obtain.C.Distinguish. D.Steal. 30.How did the team conduct the research A.By giving reasons.B.By analysing data.C.By listing examples.D.By making comparisons.B 根据第三段中的“They studied the data collected from 48 reviews between January 2000 and June 2023”可知,该团队是通过分析数据来进行研究的。31.What can we learn from the last paragraph A.Plant-based diets are an invitation to allergies among people.B.Plant-based diets can make up for vitamin and mineral shortage.C.Further researches should be focused on how to improve health.D.Individual health needs should be considered before diet changes.D 根据最后一段中的“Because of these...these diets are positively correlated with better health.” DSome people prefer paperbacks because they're easy to borrow and share.Others will go for e-readers.But which is the more environmentally sustainable option Whether it's better to read books in print or on a device is complicated, because of the complex interaction of the resources involved across the entire lifecycle of a published work: how books and devices are shipped, what energy they use to run, if they can be recycled. On the one side, traditional print publishing comes with a high carbon footprint.According to 2023 data, 32 million trees are cut down each year to make paper for books. Then there's the energy-intensive processes of printing and shipping—to say nothing of the many books that are destroyed because they remain unsold.Although it's standard practice in the industry, publishers don't want to destroy books. So instead, many are donating unsold copies, switching to on-demand printing.Publishers are also rethinking book design, since certain fonts (字体) can be more climate-friendly by using less ink and less paper. On the other hand, digital reading seems to have a considerable eco-advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees and shipping. Moreover, tech companies that make e-readers offer recycling programs for old devices. But digital devices also come with a substantial carbon footprint, especially at the manufacturing stage.Their cases are made with plastics and the minerals in their batteries require resource-heavy mining.Figuring out whether to take a digital device or a paperback to the beach ultimately depends on how much you read.“If you buy an e-reader and you read loads and loads of books on it, then it's the lowest carbon thing to do,” said Mike Berners-Lee, the author of The Carbon Footprint of Everything.“But if I buy it, read a couple of books, and decide that I prefer paperback books, then it's the worst of all worlds.”Yet Berners-Lee said that reading is still, relatively speaking, a pretty sustainable activity—regardless of whether you read using an e-reader, phone or old-fashioned paperback.【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。 32.Why is it hard to tell if print or digital books are more eco-friendly A.The whole processes for both involve many resources.B.The option depends on the reader's personal preferences.C.Recycling programs are not equally effective for both types.D.The environmental impact of reading habits is often overlooked. 33.What are book publishers doing to reduce the environmental impact A.Cutting down fewer trees.B.Destroying the unsold books.C.Employing eco-friendly practices.D.Focusing on the sales of digital books.C 根据第三段中的“So instead, many are...more climate-friendly by using less ink and less paper.” 34.According to Berners-Lee, an e-reader is more sustainable than paperbacks when ______.A.an e-reader is shared by many peopleB.people charge it using renewable energyC.an e-reader is recycled after being usedD.people read a high volume of books digitallyD 根据倒数第二段中的“Figuring out...it's the lowest carbon thing to do”可知,伯纳斯—李认为当你在电子阅读器上阅读大量书籍时,它就是更可持续的选择。35.Which is the most suitable title for the passage A.Print Books Vs.E-readers: Which Is Your Favourite B.Paper Books Vs.E-readers: Which Is Better for the Environment C.Choose Digital Reading, for It Reduces More Carbon FootprintD.Keep the Balance of Convenience and Sustainability in ReadingB Throughout the summer there is nothing like getting to play outside in the warm weather. You have all day to play and have lots of adventures, with no school or responsibilities. 36.________ Here are some simple sun safety tips that will keep you having fun in the sun.One of the easiest ways to protect yourself from the sun is to use sunscreen and know how to apply it correctly. You should remember to put on sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside.Remember to put it on any area that is exposed to the sun, especially hands, ears, neck, feet, nose, shoulders and lips. You also need to remember to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours.37.________ Waterproof sunscreen is a better choice if you will be around the water.38.________ Hats and UV protected sunglasses are important to protect your face and eyes from sun damage. stuff. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything, because when we first met, we got along so great. It was as if we'd known each other forever.Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other.Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. And the more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were.We both had two lovely cats.We both liked baking extra-creative cookies. But then something happened. The tent camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of giant old trees on it.Whenever it was nice out, we'd get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees.“Whoa!” said Karina one day.“Look at the millions of holes all the way up and down this trunk.”“That's amazing,” I said.“A special kind of woodpecker (啄木鸟)makes those holes to store acorns (橡子).”“Pretty cool!” said our counselor, Miguel.“Now, let's all be sure to keep this magical forest as clean and perfect.Don't forget to put your trash and recyclables in the bins.”And that's when things got complicated.“Hey,” said our friend LeVar.“Have you guys heard that shopping-mall rumor (传闻) They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.”“That's terrible!” I said.“We have to stop that.”“I disagree,” said Karina.“My parents said the shopping center would make new jobs for people.”“But think of all the birds and squirrels that would lose their homes!” I said.“I want people to have jobs, but not if it means cutting down trees.”“Don't you think people's jobs are more important than trees?” Karina asked.“Can't we figure out how to make jobs without destroying nature?” I answered.“You know,” Karina said, super seriously, “maybe we're not quite as alike as we thought.”I sighed sadly. Maybe two people with opposite points of view just aren't meant to be friends, I was thinking. words.Suddenly, Karina thought of an idea, “What if we organized a community event to raise awareness about the importance of those trees and also brainstormed ideas for creating jobs without harming nature?” I couldn't help but smile at her suggestion.“That's a fantastic idea, Karina! Let's do it together. Our friendship is strong enough to handle differences,” I replied, relief and excitement washing over me.We ended up having much more fun at the tent camp. Our efforts not only strengthened our friendship but also brought our camp community together in a shared cause. We realized that friendships aren't about agreeing on everything. They're about respecting each other's perspectives, learning from differences, and finding common goals. The forest remained untouched, and our bond blossomed into something even deeper and more meaningful. In the end, it wasn't about proving who was right. It was about growing together, as individuals and as friends. LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMATINET1.entitle A.to come out of an egg2.domain B.the ability to understand or to do sth.3.sponsor C.an area of knowledge or activity4.temporary D.to give sb. official permission to do, own, or use sth.5.license E.impressive and large orimportant6.hatch F.lasting or intended to last or be used only for a short time7.capacity G.to give a title to a book, play, etc.8.grand H.to pay the costs of a particular event, programme, etc.答案:1~5.GCHFD 6~8.ABEActivity 1 Reading for Genre and Structure:1.Genre:________A.Interview Record (访谈记录).B.Narration (记叙文).C.Argumentation (议论文).答案:A2.Structure and Clues:答案:(1)symbol (2)touch (3)frighten(4)mammalActivity 2 Reading for Main IdeaWhat does the passage mainly talk about It mainly talks about the__creatures__unique__to__Australia/the__amazing__animals__of__Australia.Activity 3 Reading for Details1.Read Part 2 and answer the following questions.(1)What's the meaning of the word “tough” in the sentence “It's a tough animal that has to survive in a difficult environment.”?A.Strong. containing③ every natural curiosity④ that can well be imagined. Every one was familiar to⑤ me, having⑥ been catalogued⑦ by my own hand. My uncle, apparently⑧ forgot the fact that⑨ he had asked me to his presence, was absorbed in⑩ a book. He was particularly fond of early editions, tall copies, and unique works.“Wonderful!” he cried, tapping his forehead. “Wonderful—wonderful!”It was one of those yellow-leaved volumes now rarely found on stalls (货摊), and to me it appeared to possess but little value. My uncle, however, was in raptures .He admired its binding (封边), the clearness of its characters, the ease with which it opened in his hand, and repeated aloud, half a dozen times, that it was very, very old.I asked him what it was about. “It is the Heims-Kringla of Snorre Tarleson,”he said, “the celebrated Icelandic (冰岛的) author of the twelfth century—it is a true and correct account of the Norwegian (挪威的) princes who ruled in Iceland.”My uncle's delight was to have found the original work in the Icelandic tongue, which he declared to be one of the most magnificent and yet simple idioms (方言) in the world.I was about to venture upon some joke on the subject, when a small scrap of parchment (羊皮纸) fell out of the leaves. My uncle looked keenly at the document for some moments and then declared that it was Runic The letters were similar to those in the book, but then what did they mean This was exactly what I wanted to know. Now as I had a strong conviction that the Runic alphabet and dialect were simply an invention to confuse poor human nature, I was delighted to find that my uncle knew as much about the matter as I did—which was nothing. The shaking motion of his fingers made me think so.“And yet,” he muttered to himself, “it is old Icelandic. I am sure of it.”And my uncle ought to have known, for he was a perfect polyglot (通晓多种语言的) dictionary in himself. He did not pretend to speak the two thousand languages and four thousand idioms made use of in different parts of the globe, but he did know all the more important ones.It is a matter of great doubt to me now, if the clock had not struck two, and our old French cook called out to let us know that dinner was on the table, what violent measures my uncle's impatience might have led him to.“Bother the dinner!” cried my uncle. But as I was hungry, I rushed to the dining room, where I took up my usual spot. Out of politeness I waited three minutes, but no sign of my uncle, the Professor. I was surprised. He was not usually so blind to the pleasure of a good dinner. The dinner was a German luxury —parsley (欧芹) soup, a ham omelette (煎蛋) with trimmings (装饰), an oyster (牡蛎) of stewed beef, delicious fruit, and sparkling Moselle (白葡萄酒). For the sake of this old piece of parchment, my uncle did not come to share our meal. To satisfy my conscience , I ate for both. The old cook and housekeeper was nearly out of her mind. After taking so much trouble, to find her master not appear at dinner was to her a sad disappointment —which, as she occasionally watched the havoc (浩劫) I was making on the table, became also alarm. If my uncle were to come to table after all?Suddenly, just as I had consumed the last apple and drunk the last glass of wine, a terrible voice was heard at no great distance. It was my uncle roaring for me to come to him. I made very nearly one leap of it—so loud, so fierce was his tone.INCLUDEPICTURE "语基拾萃LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "../../../语基拾萃LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT①account [熟词生义] n. ④curiosity n.奇物;珍品⑤be familiar to... ⑦catalogue v. ⑩be absorbed in全神贯注于 particularly adv. celebrated adj. magnificent adj. 热烈地 be similar to... dialect n. out of politeness出于礼貌 luxury n.奢侈 stewed adj.炖制的 for the sake of为了 conscience n. occasionally adv. 1.Located(locate) in the south of China, Guilin is one of the best-known tourist destinations in China.2.As is known to all, he has remained loyal to his political(politics) principles and he will never betray his motherland.3.He is an expert in herbal(herb) medicine and often gives lectures on the subject.4.He demanded that the materials referred (refer) to should be sorted out immediately.5.She plans to start a foundation(found) for homeless children and wants to build a community centre. 1.In/With reference to table manners, I want to give you some suggestions and hope that they will be helpful to you.2.On the other hand, traveling can broaden my horizons and provide me with much fun.3.After months of voyage, Columbus arrived in what later proved to be a new continent.4.The majority of residents in Chinatown are(be) still ethnic Chinese, many of whom do not speak English fluently.5.I have actively attended English lectures, from which I have a good knowledge of British and American cultures.6.A new shopping mall is reported to__be__built(build) in the city center next year.7.During my trip to Africa, I came into contact with some rare species of animals.8.The peacock is native to South Asia and is widely regarded as a symbol of grace and elegance. (“名词+介词+关系代词”引导定语从句)The activity,the__aim__of__which__is__to__draw__our__attention__to__environmental__protection,__raises our awareness of caring about nature.2. It__is__said__that__more__than__500__students__took__part__in__the__5-kilometer__cross-country__running__race held last week.3. (过去分词短语作状语)Located__on__the__top__of__a__big__hill,__the city offers a good view of the ocean.4. People in this small town refer__to__the__old__library__as__a__treasure__house__of__knowledge,__as it holds countless precious books and historical records.5. Although he is very busy with his new job, he makes an effort to__keep__in__contact__with__his__old__colleagues.Ⅰ. Reading and Thinking】My friend and I have arrived in Katherine, a town in Australia's Northern Territory. refers to the speed of which a trip is taken, where travelers take a train through Europe instead of flying, for example. However, it also has a broader meaning of tourists staying in destinations for longer, emphasizing a connection with local people, culture, food and music. This means that slow travel is also more sustainable for local communities and the environment.Johanna Bonhill-Smith, Travel & Tourism Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Various consumer trends already suggest that slow travel could take off soon.A trip longer than ten nights is more highly desired(22%)than a day visit(10%)or short break away from one to three nights(14%)according to a live poll from GlobalData.”There is also a larger remote workforce across the globe.Over 70% of global respondents choose to work remotely full time or have a mixture of both remote and office work in another GlobalData poll. Many offices are likely to be more flexible regarding working hours and the location of an employee, meaning combining work and leisure will be easier for employees.Sustainability is also at the forefront of consumers' decisions.“Supporting social causes” was identified as a key driver in product purchases for 25% of global respondents in GlobalData's Q1 2021 consumer survey and for 45% this was “nice to have”.Preference for products can reflect on service trends and this identifies that consumers may feel more inclined to support local communities, which is a gap that “slow travel” can fill.Bonhill-Smith adds: “Slow travel is sure to make its mark in travel. This trend reflects consumers' growing desire for more experiential forms of travel, going above and beyond the hordes (成群) of tourists gathered for sun, sea and sand. Its potential growth could further rival the concept of mass tourism and the all-inclusive package holiday concept in travel's new trend.”【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。 4.Which can be a proper example of slow travel A.To take a direct flight to times and higher costs of accommodation.Though Altay still lacks the capability to receive large numbers of travelers, Wei believes that the development of its tourism sector enjoys great prospects.“Altay has different charms in summer and winter, and these distinct seasonal views are attractive to travelers. From my perspective, authorities in Altay can take the hit show as an So much of travel these days seems to involve running ourselves ragged trying to hit every amazing attraction we see on social media.Sleepcations, however, take the polar opposite approach to vacation.According to Skyscanner's 2024 travel trends report, nearly 50% of American travelers surveyed say they are more willing to take a vacation with the intention to get a good night or a few good nights of sleep now compared to a few years ago.The research also showed that sleeping topped the list of U.S.travelers' main activities for their next vacation, outranking shopping, nightlife and wildlife spotting. While some wellness resorts have been focusing on sleep for years, now more and more resorts and hotels, from luxury to lifestyle and even budget-friendly properties, are making sure that sleep is as the forefront of a stay. The Malibu Beach Inn in Southern California features two designated “sleep suites”, and the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on Hawaii's Big Island offers an 80-minute “sweet dreams” massage treatment meant to promote a good night's rest.Virgin Hotels Dallas offers blackout curtains in each room and bedtime amenities (便利设施) like bath bombs and relaxation spray.Although these amenities and services might seem like unnecessary luxuries, the reality is that doing whatever you can to prioritize sleep is quite important.“Most people don't get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night,” noted Danielle Desir Corbett, a luxury travel and personal finance expert.“Over time, this ‘sleep debt’ can have serious health implications, affecting cognitive(认知的)function, mood, weight, and immune systems.Sleep is even linked to chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension.Sleepcations focus on rest and rejuvenation and can be a powerful tool in preventing health issues.”【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。 5.What did Skyscanner's 2024 travel trends report find A.Travelers are more mindful of their sleep health.B.The travelers' activities are more and more varied.C.Only a few travelers are interested in sleep tourism.D.Sleep is good for our physical and mental wellness. 根据第二段中的“nearly 50% of American travelers...get a good night or a few good nights of sleep now compared to a few years ago”可知,旅行者更注意自己的睡眠健康。6.Why does the author mention the hotels in paragraph 3 A.To show us the luxuries of the hotels.B.To emphasize the importance of sleep.C.To prove the popularity of sleepcation.D.To make an advertisement for the hotels.C 根据第三段中的“While some wellness resorts...sleep is as the forefront of a stay.” 7.What is Danielle Desir Corbett's attitude towards sleepcation A.Unclear. Life, as I knew it, had changed. My beloved grandmother, my nanny, as a “parent” in the absence of my father, had cancer. It was terminal (晚期的).[2]As she watched a Sunday afternoon TV program, she remarked to me that she'd never left Australia and that now she never would. Seeing her restricted to “travel” by watching TV, I swallowed the sadness that came with knowing that chapters of her life were to be left unwritten.[3]At work, feeling helpless, I wiped tables and took orders and thought hard. The Saturday afternoon lunch rush was not enough to stop me from my thoughts. Collapsed with growing sorrow, I was reminded of the power of the Internet and the collective strength of human sympathy. I raced from the end of my shift to ask strangers on the Internet for help.[4]My nanny Del has cancer. It's terminal and she will never see the world. Please send her postcards so she can see the world from her armchair. I can offer nothing but gratitude.[5]I resolved not to breathe a word of this; if nothing came, I couldn't bear to carry her disappointment along with my own. And if something should wander into our humble little letterbox, I would consider it a blessing and embrace it gratefully.[6]Days turned into weeks: Nothing. And Nanny's health declined rapidly. I was trying to balance my full-time study, babysitting and waiting tables with the tiring responsibility of caring for my grandmother. As I helped Nanny in the early hours of those mornings, she would chat to me, sometimes reflections of her lifetime, and other times, the disturbance caused by medication. She seldom talked about her regret of being unable to travel, but I was still hoping for something. One afternoon, about six weeks after my post, a travel-worn postcard arrived in our letterbox.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________My dreams of armchair travels became a reality.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________INCLUDEPICTURE "审要素lll.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "../../../审要素lll.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT【Settings背景】When&Where [1]While the sun washed over the grass of my grandmother's front__garden,__I sank into one of her armchairs familiar to me.[4]Please send her postcards so she can see the world from __her__armchair.【Characters角色】Who I,my__grandmother/nanny【Plots情节】What [2]As she watched a Sunday afternoon TV program, she remarked__to__me that she'd never left Australia and that now she never would.
