Share Your Good News, and You Will Be Better Off
Adapted from Scientific American
Positive experiences happen to us everyday, yet we don't always take full advantage of them. Have you ever noticed that it could be a great day—you had 8 hours of sleep or it's the weekend, and you had a great conversation with a friend, etc. But it takes just one word from someone or one piece of bad news to ruin the day. Research by Shelley Gable and Jonathan Haidt suggests that we actually have three times more positive experiences than negative. But what keeps us from fully capitalizing on① all the good in our lives, making us a to the bad
Researchers have identified two main tendencies② that keep us from experiencing, extending③, and our joy: the negativity bias④ and habituation⑤. The negativity bias refers to our mind's innate tendency to give more to the negative. Roy Baumeister has shown that we tend to remember and focus more on negative experiences. Habituation, discussed in research on the hedonic treadmill⑥, refers to the fact that while we receive boosts⑦ of happiness from new positive experiences, over time, we get used to these experiences and they no longer have the same effect.
How can we counter⑧ this tendency to assign greater weight to the negative experiences in our life A recent study by Nathaniel Lambert and colleagues at Brigham Young University gives us a clue⑨. Their research shows that discussing positive experiences leads to well-being⑩, increased overall life satisfaction and even more energy.
This research may seem surprising because we are often reluctant to talk about our good fortune. We don't want to show off . Sometimes we don't want to “jinx ” ourselves by doing so. Or we may feel guilty that good things are happening to us in the face of the suffering that exists in other people's lives. However, Lambert and colleagues' research suggests that describing our happy experiences to close friends and romantic partners is a better idea.
Lambert's new study, however, extends research on gratitude to show that expressing the gratitude we feel to people close to us helps increase and sustain our well-being above beyond simply feeling or writing down gratitude.
Great literary figures have long known that happiness grows in sharing. In one of her letters, Charlotte Bront observes “Happiness quite unshared can scarcely be called happiness; it has no taste.” In The Common Reader, Virginia Woolf writes “Pleasure has no relish unless we share it.” Lambert's research provides empirical support of their wisdom.

One possible version:
I would like to share my housework experience at weekends. Early in the morning I made breakfast, followed by sorting out clothes, books and other items at home. What I am proud of is I can fold tofu quilt, which I learned from the military training. Eventually I swept the floor, and cleaned the table and cabinets to make them as crystal clear as a mirror. Not only did the experience free me from the academic pressure, it also relaxed my parents, killing two birds with one stone.INCLUDEPICTURE "英RJXZXBX4Unit4LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "../../英RJXZXBX4Unit4LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT

In the few weeks since I came to Liberia, I have come to know these people very well. We have worked together, surrounded by blood, vomit and death. But, although the death rate is very high, we will never give up on a patient, and our efforts do sometimes end in miracles.
Just after my arrival, a family of six were brought here in the back of a van. All of them were infected. The twin girls and their parents soon died. We knew there was little hope for the brothers, but we did everything we could to save them. When we visited the ward the next morning, we were amazed to see that against all odds, both boys were still alive. Pascal and Daniel have since made a full recovery. This small but unexpected success compensated for many other less fortunate cases.
To be caught up in such a crisis creates powerful bonds between people, not only between carers and patients, but also between all those who have come from different parts of the world and joined together in a common cause. It is so inspiring to have colleagues like Wilton, Maisy and Alfonso, not to mention all the others I have worked with.
Now my time is almost up. In a few days, someone else will arrive to step into my shoes, and the tireless work that the MSF members do in more than 70 countries and regions around the world will go on. In a world still facing so many problems, it is absolutely essential for us all to collaborate to create a global community with a shared future of peace and prosperity.

A.Two. B.Three.
C.Four. D.Five.
2.What happened to Pascal and Daniel
A.They died.
B.They were still seriously ill.
C.Their condition was unknown.
D.They recovered completely.
3.What can we infer from the passage about the author
A.The author will never come back to Liberia.
B.The author is proud of the work done.
C.The author is tired of the work in Liberia.
D.The author doesn't like his colleagues.
4.What can we conclude from the passage
A.The MSF's work is not important.
B.The crisis in Liberia has been solved.
C.Global collaboration is necessary to solve problems.
D.There will be no more problems in the world.

(2024·枣庄高二期末) On a drizzly British spring day, the 2024 Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title of the world's longest-serving lifeguard.
Lewis, 74, began volunteering as a lifeguard at the age of 16.Over the years, he patrolled the beaches as a member of the Royal Lifesaving Society, and in 2001, became part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguard service when the charity began providing beach patrols for local authorities. “It's the best job in the world,” Lewis said. “You're working on the beach, which you love, and you're helping people. What could be better?”
Most of his colleagues are half his age, but he is still fighting fit. A Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguard must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes, and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The swimming fitness tests are still reasonably easy for Lewis. But a little hip trouble, the legacy of a rugby injury, can slow down his running. “I've been doing yoga to try to help with that,” he said.
Lewis's most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when a 16-year-old girl and her two younger brothers got into trouble while swimming off Durley Chine beach. On that day, the girl was being hurled into a groyne (防波堤), leaving her with nasty cuts. One of her brothers was hanging on to the groyne while the third child was being knocked around by the waves. Lewis swam out with a rescue tube and managed to get all three back to the beach. As he got out, everyone on the beach stood up and applauded.
If Lewis does stop any time soon, there is someone else who may just break his record. His wife of 49 years, Elaine Lewis, 70, has been a lifeguard in Bournemouth for 50 years and still competes in lifeguard competitions. Their two children are lifeguards and their grandchildren are in training.

(2024·泉州四校高二期末联考) A new coffee shop in New York lets its customers help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in every cup! This is the first coffee shop by Café Joyeux, which is based in Europe. They hire individuals with IDD, providing valuable training and employment opportunities and empowering them along the way.
Café Joyeux was founded in France in response to the alarming fact that over 8 million people with IDD face an 80% unemployment rate. The coffee shop aims to fight against this inequality by not only providing inclusive employment but also leading the way in promoting workplace inclusion more broadly.
The story started on a sailing boat in Brittany, France, where Captain Yann Bucaille-Lanzerac, a successful businessman, shared his passion for sailing with passengers of all abilities. During a trip, Theo, a young man with IDD, asked Yann for a job. Yann hesitated, saying it was complicated, leaving Theo silent. This encounter led to the creation of Café Joyeux, employing and training people with mental and cognitive (认知的) disabilities, which has since expanded to over 19 locations across Europe.
In early 2024, the first American Café Joyeux opened in New York City. Bucaille-Lannezac and his wife, Lydwine Bucaille, founders of Café Joyeux, employed 169 team members with disabilities. They believed their employees could provide excellent products and services, and stressed the significance of equal rights and fair treatment in the workplace. They started by empowering their employees and reinvesting 100% of their profits to further this mission, both within and outside their cafés.
Early supporters, like Giovana Mullins, have praised the coffee shop Café Joyeux for its welcoming atmosphere. “As a customer walking in, even if you don't know what this coffee shop is all about, you will feel the energy and the joy,” she said.

For the Love of a Man-1
Excerpt from The Call of the Wild
淘金潮时期,米勒法官家的爱犬巴克被贩卖到寒冷的阿拉斯加,它历经了重重磨难,最终回归到大自然。
When John Thornton froze his feet in the previous① December, his partners had made him comfortable and left him to get well, going on themselves up the river to get out a raft (筏子) for Dawson. He was still limping② slightly③ at the time he rescued④ Buck, but with the continued warm weather even the slight limp left him. And here, lying by the river bank through the long spring days, watching the running water, listening⑤ lazily to the songs of birds and the hum⑥ of nature, Buck slowly won back⑦ his strength⑧.
A rest comes very good after one has travelled three thousand miles, and it must be confessed⑨ that Buck enjoyed it⑩ as his wounds healed , his muscles swelled out , and the flesh came back to cover his bones. Actually, they were all wandering —Buck, John Thornton, and Skeet and Nig—waiting for the raft to come that was to carry them down to Dawson.
Skeet was a little Irish setter (赛特种猎犬) who early made friends with Buck, who , in a dying condition, was unable to resent her first advances. She had the doctor trait which some dogs possess; and as a mother cat washes her kittens, so she washed and cleansed Buck's wounds. Regularly , each morning after he had finished his breakfast, she performed her self-appointed task.
Nig, equally friendly, though less demonstrative (情感外露的), was a huge black dog, with eyes that laughed and a boundless good nature . To Buck's surprise these dogs manifested no jealousy toward him. They seemed to share the kindliness and largeness of John Thornton. As Buck grew stronger they enticed (怂恿) him into all sorts of ridiculous games, in which Thornton himself could not forbear to join. And in this fashion , Buck was into a new existence . Love, genuine passionate love, was his for the first time, which was feverish (激动的) and burning , that was adoration , that was madness.
This man had saved his life, which was something; but, further, he was the ideal master. Other men saw to the welfare of their dogs from a sense of duty and business expediency (权宜之计); he saw to the welfare of his as if they were his own children, because he could not help it. And he saw further. He never forgot a kindly greeting or a cheering word, and to sit down for a long talk with them (“gas” he called it) was as much his delight as theirs. He had a way of taking Buck's head roughly between his hands, and resting his own head upon Buck's, of shaking him back and forth , the while calling him ill names that to Buck were love names.
Buck knew no greater joy than that rough embrace and the sound of murmur. And when released , he sprang to his feet , his mouth laughing and his eyes shining.
Generally, Buck's love was expressed in adoration. While he went wild with happiness when Thornton touched him or spoke to him, Buck was content to adore at a distance. He would lie by the hour, eager, alert , at Thornton's feet, looking up into his face eagerly. Sometimes he would lie farther away, watching the outlines of the man and the occasional movements of his body.
For a long time after his rescue, Buck did not like Thornton to get out of his sight. From the moment he left the tent to when he entered it again, Buck would follow at his heelsB51. He was afraid that Thornton would pass out of his life as Perrault and Francois. Even in the night, in his dreams, he was haunted (忧心忡忡的) by this fear. At such times he would shake off sleep and creep through the chill to the tent, whereB52 he would stand and listen to the sound of his master's breathing.

22 March 2015
Today we celebrate. It's exactly one month since the last reported case. But it is vital not to take any chances. So, 20 health care workers from almost as many countries, comrades in arms, raise virtual glasses to each other.
I arrived in Liberia with MSF almost three months ago. When I saw the tragic scenes on the news, I felt it was my duty as a doctor to go there and offer my help. I knew I was putting my life at risk, but I thought, “If I don't do it, who will?” It is important to remember that Ebola doesn't respect national boundaries. There are no borders for doctors, for patients or for anyone else involved in combating this terrible disease.
My mission was to relieve Emma, a Canadian specialist in infectious diseases at the end of her posting. Emma spent an hour with me in the staff room talking me through the daily routine. As she talked, I could hear at least three different languages being spoken at the tables around us. Later, Emma introduced me to some of the others working for or alongside MSF: Wilton, a young local man, who helped carry the very sick into the treatment clinic and who disinfected clothing and surfaces; Maisy, a retired public health official from Darwin, Australia, whose local team of volunteers educated people on preventing infection; Alfonso, a soft-spoken Argentinian doctor in his 50s, who had previously worked on Ebola outbreaks in Sierra Leone and Guinea. The list went on. I found that I was the only Chinese doctor among people of all ages, colours and beliefs, from every continent except Antarctica. With each person I met, I felt a growing sense of pride as part of this extraordinary team, whose devotion to the cause shone from their eyes.
1.How long has it been since the last reported case
A.One week. B.Two weeks.
C.Three weeks. D.One month.
2.Where is the author from
A.Canada. B.Australia.
C.China. D.Argentina.
3.What can we infer from the passage
A.The author was not afraid of the risk.
B.The author found the working environment rough.
C.There were few people working with the doctor.
D.The doctor was not satisfied with the team.

As a nature educator, Han, 30, enjoys taking teenagers to discover the magic of trees. He always plays a game called Encounter My Tree. He blindfolds children and lets them explore a tree using their hands. “When my students find their tree, it feels like a reunion with an old friend, filling them with joy,” Han said.
Han is always surprised at his students' amazing imaginations. They might call a walnut tree a “bomb tree” because its falling walnuts are just like “bombs”. Chinese privet, in their eyes, may look like a “drone”, so they call it “drone tree”.
“Although observing trees is a simple and equipment-free activity, there are quite a few things you can do,” noted Han. You can study a tree by looking at the bark's appearance and color and looking for tiny pores (气孔) on the trunk which the tree uses to “breathe”...
Meanwhile, you can engage with a tree's life journey, from a seed to a full-grown tree. “You can feel the passage of time by touching the tree trunk with your eyes closed, or sense the energy flowing inside by pressing your ear against the trunk,” Han said.
The key challenge in the tree observation is patience and letting go of preconceived ideas. Patience is extremely important as it allows you to immerse yourself in the tree's world. Practicing meditation or playing the Encounter My Tree game can help you connect with trees faster. People with extensive plant knowledge may overlook the beauty of a tree's unique details. Each living being is distinctive, and every tree has its own story and growth marks.
“For me, the joy of observing trees sometimes goes beyond the trees themselves,” noted Han. “Up in the tree, you'll find a tiny world with busy ants, hidden spiders, and even parasitic plants completing their life journeys,” he added.

(2024·中山高二期末) My journey as a United Nations Volunteer started with a recommendation from a friend. At the time, I had practiced medicine in my home country, Cameroon, for over 20 years. A close friend advised me to join the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program as a way to expand my experience in medicine, while traveling and volunteering in service of others. My remembrance of my sister's illness made me decide right away that this was right for me.
When I was younger, my sister developed a medical condition. She underwent two heart surgical operations and lots of suffering, but she survived and inspired me. She later asked me to consider a career in medicine to help other young girls. When this volunteering opportunity came up, I took it and became a volunteer in the UNV on 27 March 2008.
I was recruited for the first volunteer assignment in Haiti. As a mother of seven-year-old twins, it was not easy for me to travel and leave them behind. But I did it with the support of my husband, who understood my motives and took good care of our children while I was working overseas.
My volunteering journey took me involved in inpatient and outpatient services, medical evacuations and capacity building activities. These experiences were wide-ranging and led my career growth within the UNV. At first, my children didn't want to study medicine. While in Cameroon, they saw me work long hours and weekends and come home tired. They found it challenging to accept the career that demanded a lot of their mother's time. However, my children began to view medicine differently after I joined the UNV. They began to understand how important doctors are to crisis-affected communities and now see themselves in the lives we save. This is everything to me.

(2024·金华十校高二期末)Free-riding means people can benefit from a service without paying anything. It also arises if people can get benefit without making equal contributions. So a free rider always enjoys the benefits of a resource or service while letting someone else do the work or do more work.
There are several effects of the free rider problem. The first is the Tragedy (悲剧) of the Commons, a situation in which individuals with access to a public resource act in their own interest and, in doing so, finally use up the resource. For example, imagine that a group of people share a piece of land where they all graze (让……吃草) their cattle. If each person just tries to maximize their own short-term gain, they will let their cattle graze as much as possible. However, if everyone does this, the land will quickly become overgrazed and will not be able to support any cattle.
Another effect is that the free rider problem can lead to a situation in which people do not have access to important goods and services. This is because providers may not be able to get back the costs of providing the goods or services if too many people free ride. Imagine that a city decides to build a new hospital through donations. If too many people rely on others to donate, rather than donate themselves, then the hospital may not be built at all. This means that people who need medical care in the area may not have access to it.
There are several solutions to the free rider problem. Government addresses the problem by collecting tax dollars to support public services. Theoretically, taxes are related to income, so fair cost-sharing can be munities can turn their public resource into a private or club resource, charging fees to make sure everyone who uses it contributes to it. This will limit overuse and, over time, may even lead to altruistic (利他的) behaviour. That is, many people may like the idea of making a small contribution to a resource that they use.

Last year I had a 7-day paid leave and I decided to go on an overnight stay to a nearby fancy hotel. I was drawn to the beautiful views and distance from the hustle and bustle (喧嚣) of the city. After I arrived, I was shocked to know that my room had no wireless network or even television! We were in a modern society, weren't we?Then what was the matter with them
“We learned from recent studies that people avoiding social media for one week might result in considerable improvements in their well-being, depression, and anxiety,” the staff explained with patience to me when I questioned their service.“And now, many hotels and homestays around the world have been offering visitors exactly this,__sir...”
Later, I ran across some brochures about such trend in my room. Sheldon Chalet, a famous place of interest in Alaska, has gone tech-free in an attempt to provide its guests with a truly relaxing vacation without technology.Owner Marne Sheldon hopes that guests can become less dependent of technology.“Here they can spend their nights looking at shooting stars and the aurora (极光), rather than checking through smartphones, messages and posts or watching the news.” For travelers who prefer peace in the sun and sand, one tiny island in the Caribbean has no televisions, telephones or wireless network.Guests at the island's resort have to communicate with staff using traditional methods, such as raising or lowering a flag outside their cottage!
“In today's environment of constant information and digital connection, many people are in need of a digital detox (数码脱瘾).” Anyway, as for my case, it is actually a new luxury—peace and quiet.

From the very first cellphone developed by an American company in 1973 which could only make phone calls for 30 minutes at most to today's 5G smartphones, the shape of the mobile phone has been constantly changing and its features have become more and more diverse.
While current foldable phones are limited to folding the screen up and down or left and right, AI tools predict that in the future, phones will become completely flexible.
A company revealed a flexible phone with an adaptive display that can be worn like a bracelet and bent into multiple shapes in October 2023.And other companies are also working on a way to make foldable screens with fewer creases.
The phones of the future may also be “self-healing”—who hasn't experienced that awful moment when you drop your phone and the screen cracks So an “unbreakable” phone would really come in handy.
In 2023, Zhenan Bao at Stanford University, US, developed a synthetic (合成的) skin that can heal itself using heat and magnets. This artificial skin can stretch like human skin without tearing. This new type of thin film can rearrange itself automatically as it heals.
The way phones are powered will also see a shift, such as by using solar energy. Many innovative technologies and devices have come out of this field. In 2016, a corporation from Japan and a French company launched a solar-powered phone, using solar panels built into the screen to collect solar energy.
It took about three minutes of sunlight to charge the phone for one minute of talk time. Due to the longer relative charging time when using solar power, the phone still needed traditional batteries to be practical. However, as the tech develops and solar panels can charge things more efficiently, we may see a rise in using solar energy to charge smartphones.

Some girls tend to feel frustrated if they have a pear-shaped body, with hips that are wider than the bust (胸部) and shoulders. While pear-shaped people's waists are typically smaller, they may have more fat on their hips and legs. As a result, many pear-shaped girls try to hide their hips and legs under large dresses and pants.
However, a recent study suggested that pear-shaped people are the ones who won the genetic lottery!
A study published in September by the US National Library of Medicine found that the waist-to-hip ratio(WHR) shows the strongest and most consistent association with mortality. Traditionally, the body mass index (BMI) has been considered the best indicator of health. However, this study challenges this belief. It surveyed nearly 40,000 people and found that, regardless of BMI, WHR is positively correlated with all-cause mortality(all of the deaths that occur in a population no matter the cause). The larger the WHR, the higher the all-cause mortality rate will be. Instead of focusing on how much fat a person has, scientists involved in this study suggest people should focus more on how fat is distributed in a person's body.
WHR, as its name suggests, compares your waist measurement to your hip measurement. A larger waistline means more central fat, which could indicate more visceral fat (内脏脂肪), also known as toxic fat. Harvard Medical School states that more visceral fat increases the risk of illnesses including diabetes, heart diseases and asthma. That's why people with a pear-shaped body tend to be healthier than others. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), a healthy WHR is less than 0.85 for women and less than 0.9 for men.
It is impossible to specifically target waist fat when people try to lose weight. But losing overall fat will make the waist smaller. 第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Maya, do you know what day it is today?” Ali asked. Maya, absorbed in her homework, replied, “It's the 5th of December.” Then suddenly she exclaimed, “Ali, it's Daddy's birthday today!” “That's exactly what I was about to tell you,” Ali responded with excitement. “How could we forget such a special day How careless of us!” Maya blamed herself. “Maya, we haven't planned anything yet. We don't have much time!” Ali regretted. “It's never too late, we still have time until dinner,” Maya comforted him.
Both of them were filled with determination to make their dad's birthday memorable. They decided to gather some funds and remembered they had been saving their pocket money to buy comic books. However, even after pooling their money, they realised it wasn't enough.
“Oh no, we can't even afford a decent chocolate cake with this amount, let alone decorations,” Maya sighed in disappointment.
“But remember sister, Daddy likes simplicity, so we should make it as simple as we can. Let's decorate the room with balloons only and simply order creamy pasta, Daddy's favourite,” Ali expressed his thoughts.
“Hmm...you are right. I am thinking of baking the cake ourselves,” added Maya. “Now let's see what's in the fridge and start working on our project for today.”
That evening, their parents had to attend a tea party, leaving the kids with ample time to experiment in the kitchen. Maya felt a bit nervous, but Ali encouraged her. “Dear sister, have confidence in yourself. This is our last option, and we don't have any other choice. Trust me, baking a cake isn't as difficult as it seems only if we are determined to.”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

As they just finished decorating the room, the doorbell rang.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
With Ali's motivation, they started the task like scientists in a lab. They surfed the Internet and found the recipes for cake. Having prepared the necessary ingredients: eggs, sugar, milk, oil, baking powder, light cream and so on, they started according to the procedures. Eventually they made it. After placing the cake in the oven, they cleaned up the kitchen. Nearly 30 minutes later, the cake emerged from the oven, and they both shouted with joy, “We did it!” Overcome with excitement, they got down to decorating the room with the balloons.
As they just finished decorating the room, the doorbell rang. Maya and Ali opened the door. Upon seeing their parents, the kids hummed the birthday song together. Knowing the birthday cake was made by themselves, his father gave them each a bear hug, saying “Thank you, my sweeties. What a big surprise.” It became a memorable day. Later that night, Maya shared a lesson with Ali, “Sometimes, it's only the first step that makes us afraid. Once we have a firm belief in ourselves, everything will become a piece of cake.”
