We're going to stay there for a week.I hope that's enough time, because I haven't seen her since last Christmas, and we have so much to talk about. We were thinking of going to Chicago after that, but we just don't have time,so it's straight on to Washington,D.C., and New York. We've got two days in Washington and three in New York. I'm 62 now and always planned to volunteer with older people when I retired. There was such a big gap in the care and support this generation receives and I found the thought heartbreaking—no one should have to feel lonely and stuck at home.
I started volunteering three years ago. My team of volunteers have set up seven groups in our town. We host tea parties for those aged 75 and older who live on their own and regularly provide support, friendship and companionship for the most isolated (孤独的) older people in the community.
Working with my older neighbors is rewarding. To hear their stories and the hardships they have overcome is inspiring. I feel like I'm making a positive difference to the lives of older people by sharing my time with them, helping them stay active and social and making clear to them that they are valued by our community.
As an area coordinator (协调人), I also help recruit (招募) and manage volunteers, without whom the work would be impossible. So many go above and beyond what's asked, offering time, energy and kindness, just because they care. I've found enthusiasm from people making the lives of our older neighbors better, and they are a constant source of inspiration for me.
I've met amazing people from all walks of life. It's the best thing I've ever done that enriched my life. I will keep focusing on reducing loneliness and isolation among the elderly and helping them enjoy the old age they deserve.

A lot of media attention has focused on the harmful effects of working long hours. Logging excessive hours at work is rooted in the work culture of the West. From Bay Area startups to various multinationals, their idea is centered around how many hours you can clock at work. It is assumed that the more hours you put into your job, the more career prospects you'll get out of it.
A new study in Europe challenged this assumption, however. From their analysis of nearly 52,000 people from 36 European countries, they concluded that it's not the number of hours you clock at the office, but how intensely you work during those hours, that affects career related outcomes. Researchers found people, with similar jobs and education levels, were more likely to suffer poorer well being and inferior career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods. According to Hans Frankort, a senior lecturer in strategy at Cass Business School, the research suggests career benefits of excessive work effort—longer hours or harder work—may never materialize.
Employers should reduce work intensity rather than try to control excessive hours, the authors concluded. “Compared with overtime, work intensity predicts much greater reductions in well being and career benefits,” Hans Frankort said.
There is also a range of things for employees to do to ensure they're working smarter, and not just harder. Beth Belle Cooper, a former content creator at Buffer, the social media scheduling app, suggests taking more breaks to refresh your mind and reset your attention span. She also recommends taking naps to consolidate new information in the brain and help you avoid burnout. You might also consider completely unplugging from work more consistently, and for longer periods of time. This is what Sean McCabe and his small team does when they take a week long vacation every seventh week.

Scrolling through social media can quickly convince you that everyone's life is more interesting than yours. During a particularly adventurous week on social media Stories recently, I saw water skiing in Maui, hiking in Yosemite and swimming with wild pigs in Bermuda. I started searching flights to new places. Then I ordered pho, Vietnam's national dish, from the same Vietnamese place I eat every week and returned to the same old routine and I felt bad about not trying somewhere new.
Evolutionarily, human brains tend to find newfangled experiences more exciting and attention grabbing than repeated experiences. They can't process all the thrills around us, so we evolve to pay attention to new, flashy and potentially dangerous things more intently than familiar things, which we've seen enough to know they're not dangerous. What's more, words like “repetition” and “repetitiveness” tend to be associated with more negative emotions.
However, recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests we should reconsider how we digest those feelings of monotony (单调). Some previous research has painted a negative picture of repeated experiences, saying that doing the same thing twice can feel less valuable. But Ed O'Brien, a professor of behavioral science, wondered whether people actually underestimate how positively they react to repeated experiences.
To test this theory, Mr.O'Brien and his team exposed all participants to the same stimulus (刺激) (various stimuli were tested, including museum visits, movies and video games). Next, after dividing them into two groups, the first group of participants were asked to imagine repeating the experience, while the second actually did repeat the experience. Counter to previous research, Mr.O'Brien found that across the board, repeated experiences were far more enjoyable than participants expected. In other words, you're far more likely to enjoy something the second time around than you think.
“Brand new experiences are definitely great for enjoyment,” said Mr.O'Brien. “And our studies don't go against this idea. In many cases, the brand new option is better. But what our studies emphasize is that repeated options might also have high hedonic (与快乐有关的) value and might also come with lower costs than a purely new option.”
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了很多人都喜欢冒险,追求新鲜感,但是研究却发现,重复能让我们更全面、深刻地认识事物,能给我们带来不一样的快乐。
32.What did the author think of her own life
A.It included many exciting things.
B.It depended heavily on social media.
C.It was highly adventurous.
D.It was boringly repetitive.

33.What is the meaning of the underlined word in paragraph 2
A.Fictional. B.Fascinating.
C.Novel. D.Significant.
C 解析:词义猜测题。根据画线词后的“They can't process all the thrills around us...they're not dangerous.”可知,人类的大脑往往更关注不熟悉的东西及新奇的体验。由此可推知,newfangled 意为“新奇的”。
34.How do our brains usually respond to stimuli from familiar things
A.They may pay little attention to them.
B.They may process them first.
C.They may feel uncertain of them.
D.They may consider them as positive things.
A 解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Evolutionarily, human brains tend to find...more intently than familiar things”可推知,我们的大脑使我们不太注意熟悉的刺激物。
35.What did the second group of participants do during the experiment

The cornerstone of effective small talk lies in developing genuine interest. Genuine interest is about actively seeking to understand the other person, valuing their perspectives and appreciating the uniqueness they bring to the conversation. 37.________

Since I was a young boy, I have had a dream to get a little closer to understanding bears' life in the wild. I also know getting close to a bear in the wild is amazing but also full of danger.
Bears should be contacted closely at a safe distance. So when I was in senior high school, my father decided to go camping at a research camp outside “the bear of the world”—the town of Nigeria.
That day, once we arrived at the destination, we put up the tent and took out our food, and most importantly, we set up our camera and got ready for getting close to the bear through taking photographs. At that time, a male bear followed his nose to our camp which was surrounded by a high wire fence, met us and stared at our food. It seemed that it was hungry and attracted by our food.
Frightened, we knew some bear defense actions. One is that we can climb up quickly into a tree and hide ourselves in the branches. Another is that once you must be attacked, fall flat on the ground, and when the bear comes up and smells you all over, you hold your breath, and pretend to be dead as much as you could. The bear will soon leave you, for it is said that a bear will not touch a dead body. So we kept taking some photographs.
Suddenly, the bear yelled at us and kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws (爪子). Even worse, another bear appeared and tried to tear down the fence. Of course, making the best of this close encounter, I took some pictures of the bear with a scare.
My father feared the fence wouldn't last through 25 more minutes of the bears' punishment. So he called the camp managers for help. Unluckily, they would not arrive until half an hour. They suggested we use pepper spray (胡椒粉喷雾剂) which can burn the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. What was worse, we didn't bring it.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

A few minutes later, my father looked at the big tree beside us. “Let's climb up quickly into the big tree,” my father said. So I first climbed up into the tree with my camera and then my father;we hid ourselves in the branches. And the bears yelled at us and kept trying to tear down the fence with their paws. 25 minutes later, the fence was torn down and the bears were going around under the tree. Luckily, we were safe and awaited the camp managers' coming. During the time, I took some wonderful photos.
Half an hour later, the camp managers with protection equipment arrived. They asked us not to move. We felt good at the moment. They wore professional clothes and protection equipment and approached them carefully, spraying their face with pepper spray. The bears ran to the broken fence and disappeared in the forest. Finally, we climbed down from the big tree and blessed ourselves from danger with the camp managers' help. 【改编自北师大选必三 U7】
Up until the 1980s, people in many countries regularly followed in their parents' footsteps by working in the family business or joining the same profession as them. You'd follow your father to sea, onto the farm or into the workshop. You'd follow your mother into the kitchen or sewing room. In your grandparents' time, there was the prospect of doing the same job from graduation until retirement. How times have changed! Most people now have no intention of following in their parents' footsteps or even staying at one job for very long.
In fact, planning to work in the same field or industry for your entire working life just isn't practical anymore. One reason for this is technology. The skills you have now are unlikely to remain relevant and be enough to help you through your entire career. In fact, they will probably be out of date very soon. And then what will you do Work hard Win the lottery Hope for the best You might be lucky. These strategies might bring you a nice, comfortable life: working at a job you like, earning a decent salary and retiring while you're still young and healthy. But most of us today have to look beyond the little box called “career”.
If you think you can work eight hours a day and build a career, think again. You might be able to keep your job if you finish what you are asked to do, but this is hardly a recipe for great career success. Instead, you'd better keep looking for smarter ways to do your work. You'll need to be a risk taker, an innovator, a problem solver, and a hard worker. Keep doing this, and you can become an expert or a specialist in something one day. You have a chance to choose to build a career, rather than being told to stay or to go.
1.What did people often do in their grandparents' time
A.They changed jobs frequently.
B.They worked in the same job until retirement.
C.They refused to work in the family business.
D.They chose different professions from their parents.
2.Why is it not practical to plan to work in the same field for the entire working life now
A.Because people get bored easily.
B.Because technology changes rapidly.
C.Because there are too many competitors.
D.Because salaries are too low.
3.What can we infer from the passage
A.People nowadays don't like to work hard.
B.It's easy to have a great career success now.
C.To succeed in career, one needs to keep improving.
D.Only risk takers can have a successful career.
4.What does the author suggest about building a career
A.Just do as you are told.
B.Rely on luck.
C.Take the initiative to develop skills.
D.Avoid taking risks.

(2024·南通高二期末)At 67, Margaret Bending performed her first professional show. Taking to the stage in February 2020, Bending launched into a dance and theatre piece accompanied by those all aged over 60. “I was terrified but as soon as we got going, I realized that this was what I had been looking for,” she says. “Moving my body and being surrounded by all these wonderful performers, I felt completely liberated.”
Growing up in 1960s Lincolnshire, Bending's first love was space exploration. Determined to make it into space after witnessing Yuri Gagarin's Vostok Ⅰ flight as a seven year old in 1961, Bending went on to do a PhD at Leicester University and began working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on rocket launches. By 1990, she'd had her first child and decided to pause her career to homeschool. Over the next two decades, she homeschooled her other three children until, in 2015, her youngest son departed for university and she found herself with an empty nest at her North Yorkshire home.
“It felt as if I was done with working and parenting so it was now time for a new chapter to begin,” she says. Looking back on her childhood hobbies for inspiration during retirement, Bending landed on one memory. “When I was 14 or 15, I played the part of Anitra in a school production and I loved it,” she says. “I remember the joy of dancing.”
Bending began researching local performance courses and landed on Leeds Playhouse's Heydays programme. Every Wednesday morning, she would attend half day workshops on everything from reading plays aloud to dancing salsa and improvisation (即兴表演).
Now 71, Bending has since become so fond of stage work that in 2023 she performed her own one woman show, The Story of a Rocket Scientist, dramatising her career to an audience of 80 people. She has also more recently become a paid member of the Performance Ensemble, facilitating community outreach programmes to encourage older people to try their hand at taking part in performance.
“The whole experience has been exciting, and it's made me so much more confident,” she says. “People stop seeing you as an individual in your 60s but by getting on stage we can show the world that we still have things to say, experiences to share and a future to work towards.”

(2024·中山高二期末)In November 2020, Semantic Scholar introduced their new TLDR (Too Long Didn't Read) feature. This AI powered tool can shorten even the most complex computer science papers into a single sentence summary, using natural language processing.
If you're a researcher, you might be considering how much time you could save by not having to map out evidence for a new topic. This new tool will finally allow you to shift your attention to the parts of your job that are more complex, analytical and social. At the same time, you are probably a little concerned that it could replace you or one of your colleagues. The last time it took a team of four researchers to review the evidence. Will it only require three or fewer researchers in the future
So will the impact of AI on the labour market be the same as “a new disease...namely, technological unemployment” warned by John Maynard Keynes
It seems too early to give this question an answer now. But we've learned from history the fact that previous technological waves did not cause massive job loss. Instead, they have led to transformations within the labour market and brought challenges that policymakers continue to deal with. Workers may need to re skill or up skill. This will help them to adapt to new ways of organizing tasks and the appearance of new ones. New skills will enable them to face potential job loss and manage transitions to new jobs. Policies and institutions can play a key role in ensuring that all workers can successfully handle a changing labour market.
Even if AI increases the scale of the challenge, widens inequalities and brings new challenges for the work environment, policymakers should keep these lessons in mind to help workers ride the waves of technological change.

For the Love of a Man-2
Excerpt from The Call of the Wild
淘金潮时期,米勒法官家的爱犬巴克被贩卖到寒冷的阿拉斯加,它历经了重重磨难,最终回归到大自然。
But in spite of① this great love he bore② John Thornton, which③ seemed to be the result of civilizing④ influence, the strain of the primitive⑤, which the Northland had aroused⑥ in him, remained alive and active. He was a thing of the wild, come in from the wild to sit by John Thornton's fire, rather than a dog of the soft Southland stamped⑦ with the marks of generations of civilization.
Because of his very great love, he could not leave this man, but from any other man, in any other camp, he did not hesitate⑧ an instant⑨; while the cunning⑩ enabled him to escape detection .
His face and body were hurt by the teeth of many dogs, and he fought as fiercely as ever and more shrewdly (机灵地). And Buck was merciless . He had learned well the law of club and fang (犬牙), and he never forewent an advantage or drew back from a foe he had started on the way to death. He had lessoned from Spitz, and from the chief fighting dogs, and knew there was no middle course. He must master or be mastered; while to show mercy was a weakness . Mercy did not exist in the primitive life. Kill or be killed, eat or be eaten, was the law, which he obeyed .
He sat by John Thornton's fire, a broad breasted dog, white fanged (白色尖牙的) and long furred ; but behind him were the shades of all kinds of dogs, half wolves and wild wolves, urgent and prompting , tasting the savor of the meat he ate, thirsting for the water he drank, scenting the wind with him, listening with him and telling him the sounds made by the wild life in the forest, deciding his moods, directing his actions, lying down to sleep with him when he lay down, and dreaming with him and beyond him and becoming themselves the stuff of his dreams.
Deep in the forest a call was sounding, and as often as he heard this call, mysteriously thrilling and luring , he felt compelled to turn his back upon the fire and to plunge into the forest, and on and on, he knew not where or why; nor did he wonder where or why, the call sounding imperiously , deep in the forest.
But as often as he gained the soft unbroken earth and the green shade, the love for John Thornton drew him back to the fire again.
Thornton alone held him. The rest of mankind was as nothing. Chance travellers might praise or pet him; but he was cold under it all, and from a too demonstrative (感情外露的) man he would get up and walk away.
When Thornton's partners, Hans and Pete, arrived on the long expected raft (木筏), Buck refused to notice them till he learned they were close to Thornton; after that he tolerated them in a passive sort of way, accepting favors from them as though he favored them by accepting. They were of the same large type as Thornton, living close to the earth, thinking simply and seeing clearly; and before they swung the raft into the river, they understood Buck and his ways.
For Thornton, however, his love seemed to grow and grow. Nothing was too great for Buck to do, when Thornton commanded .
One day, at Circle City, “Black” Burton, a man evil tempered and malicious , had been picking a quarrel with a freshman at the bar, when Thornton stepped good naturedly between. Buck, as was his custom, was lying in a corner, head on paws , watching his master's every action. Burton struck out, without warning, straight from the shoulder. Thornton was sent spinning , and saved himself from falling only by clutching the rail of the bar.
Those who were looking on heard what was neither bark nor yelp (狗吠), but a something which is best described as a roar, and they saw Buck's body rise up in the air as he left the floor for Burton's throat. The man saved his life by instinctively throwing out his arm, but was hurled backward to the floor with Buck on top of him. Buck loosed his teeth from the flesh of the arm and drove in again for the throat. This time the man succeeded only in partly blocking, and his throat was torn open.
Buck's reputation was made, and from that day his name spread through every camp in Alaska.

【改编自北师大选必三U7】
Most students do an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test early in their school life. Even if they never see their results, they feel that their IQ is what determines how well they are going to do in life. When they see other students doing better than them, they usually believe that those students have a higher IQ and that there is nothing they can do to change their situation. However, new research into EQ (Emotional Quotient) suggests that success is not simply the result of a high IQ.
While your IQ tells you how intelligent you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence. Professor Salovey, who invented the term EQ, gives the following description: at work, it is IQ that gets you employed, but it is EQ that gets you promoted. Supported by his research, Professor Salovey suggests that when predicting someone's future success, their character, as measured by EQ tests, might actually matter more than their IQ.
Professor Salovey may be correct. For example, have you ever wondered why some of the smartest students in your class, who you think deserve good grades, sometimes end up failing exams Perhaps their failure is because of their lower EQ. People are often mistaken in thinking that those with high IQs always have high EQs as well. This association can exist, but it is just as possible for someone with a low IQ to have a high EQ or someone with a high IQ to have a low EQ.
It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive attitudes towards life. They are also less likely to be troubled by internal problems. On the other hand, there is little doubt that people with low EQs often have problems getting on with other people and dealing with difficult situations; hence they have a harder time adjusting in life and in their careers.
1.What determines the success in life from most students' point of view
A.Their EQ. B.Their IQ.
C.Their grades. D.Their characters.
2.Why do some smart students sometimes fail exams according to the passage
A.Because they have low EQs.
B.Because they have low IQs.
C.Because they don't study hard.
D.Because the exams are too difficult.
3.What can we infer from the passage about people with high EQs
A.They are more likely to have problems getting on with others.
B.They have more trouble adjusting in life and in their careers.
C.They are more likely to have positive attitudes towards life.
D.They are less intelligent than those with low EQs.
4.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To explain the importance of IQ in determining success.
B.To discuss the differences between IQ and EQ.
C.To show that both IQ and EQ are equally important for success.
D.To emphasize that EQ is more important than IQ for success.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2024·丽水高二期末)Different people have different ambitions in life such as doctors. For as long as I can remember I always liked teaching people something. From my childhood, I taught whatever I learned in school. It started with helping some people tie their shoelaces or making my younger siblings remember the alphabet through a sing song rhythm. This profession will enable me to make my humble contribution to the building of my nation by instilling the spirit of nationalism and patriotism in my students. The sense of accomplishment I used to feel when the other person finally learned whatever it was that I had been teaching them was indescribable.
The main reason I always wanted to teach was that firstly I thought teaching comes naturally to me and secondly, I always had the utmost respect for my teacher, who knew my strengths and weaknesses more than I did. According to Plato, education is the turning of the inner eye towards the light. By adopting the profession of teaching, I can hope to perform this stupendous task.
I aspire to make a difference in others' lives through education. I'm studying to be an elementary school teacher because I believe that children can achieve so much more if they learn early of their potential. My parents taught me as a child that schooling was vital to success in life. Truly, that lesson has been the most important in my path to college. I don't think I would have made it this far had I not taken my education seriously.
What started from teaching my siblings in their homework ended in me volunteering to teach underprivileged children and making me realise that in this world there could be never enough educators and there are people in this world who are always in need of learning. I want to teach others about the importance of education so they too can prosper. Everything I'm learning at university is important for my future career and, if I don't study it, I'm failing my future students. In view of the foregoing reasons, I am convinced that my preference to become a teacher is a step in the right direction. I will, therefore, spare no effort to achieve this ambition of my life.

(2024·德州高二期末)It's one of the most common questions adults ask children: what do you want to be when you grow up Although childhood is supposed to be fun, kids also discuss important topics regarding their futures. Now, a new study finds that children who set big goals regarding their future status and education often set themselves up for success as they age.
The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, are the first to reveal a connection between life goal development and future success in school or the workplace. Rodica Damian, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Houston, and other researchers discovered that as children grow up, their goals naturally begin to change. However, as some childhood goals fall away, other goals related to a family stay strong. These include being close to relatives, building more friendships or finding a romantic partner, and even becoming more involved in the community or helping others.
During the study, researchers compared how their goals evolved as children moved from adolescence to adulthood and how a person's goals impacted their success in school and as an employee later on. Overall, a child's goals focusing on their education and future status were the most consistent predictors of income in adulthood. Simply, when a child dreams big about doing well in school or achieving great success as an adult, these goals accurately paint a picture of how successful these children will be. So, the message is simple: dream big and dream of success, kids! Those goals can drive you to success when you grow up!
“Our work proves a strong connection between a child's life goals, educational achievements, and future occupational outcomes. (2024·商丘商师联盟期末联考)Nicholas Chorier is not a usual photographer. He is a kite aerial (航空的) photographer. He uses a kite to hoist (吊起) his camera into the skies and clicks photographs. As a teenager, Nicholas had two passions—photography and kite flying. During a trip to India to make a photo report on kite making, he learnt about this unique style of photography. Fascinated, he literally tied his two hobbies together for a living. Nicholas learnt to make strong kites modeled on the Japanese kites, Rokkaku that could stand high winds. A newbie in his chosen field, he then set out to train himself.
Today he is one of the most well known kite aerial photographers in the world. The technique is to tie a basket containing the photography equipment to the string of the kite and then fly it, thus launching the camera into air. From the ground, Nicholas controls the angles of the camera with a remote. An air to ground video link enables him to see the view from the kite's point. Once satisfied with the frame, he clicks a picture. However, the job does have its pitfalls,__too. Once, his kite disappeared in the Yamuna River, with his expensive camera following it.
He is especially fond of India, having made a couple of trips and taken many spectacular photos. “India is a too vast and beautiful country to be captured through the cameras in one life,” he says. He recently released a book, Kite's Eye View: India Between Earth and Sky. Though it includes photographs of “No Photo” sites like the Taj Mahal, it shows them from a totally different perspective.

A creative mind is the door to unlimited opportunities if people use their minds to their full capacity. Proving it to be true is Jackson Hedden, a 27-year-old industrial designer.
Jackson Hedden is an advocate of creative minds and creative ideas. He believes that every person is born creative but loses their creativity as they mature. This results in completely boring personalities and a lack of creative problem-solving techniques. According to Jackson, the most significant way to find personal success is to allow creativity to shine through all ideas coming to life.
It is important to build a connection with anything one is working on.It is a common human characteristic that people tend to react to situations better if they have had a personal experience with them. This enables them to understand the problem better, resulting in more unique and innovative solutions to solve it.Following a similar approach, Jackson also establishes a connection with the products he is designing so that he can better understand the improvements he can bring to the existing design.
Jackson made his debut (首次露面) as an industrial designer in 2017 and worked with Karim Rashid, a New York-based industrial designer. This was his first exposure to the design industry, and Jackson learned a great deal.As this was just the beginning of his career, Jackson wished to explore more, so he worked together with the founder of Kabaq and the CEO of Alper Guler to become the exclusive designer for an augmented food reality startup. He then joined a Los Angeles-based firm, RKS Designs, and worked there for a period of two years.
Keeping up with the trends, Jackson's designs are clean, innovative, and elegant. He has always kept himself in his customers' shoes and designed the product according to their convenience. Having a keen interest in designs and creative works, Jackson is always interested in a challenge to build something new with his extraordinary design techniques.

Ⅱ.七选五
(2024·北京海淀区高二月考)In science, advances are a daily occurrence, but true breakthroughs are rare. What does it take to achieve world changing scientific breakthroughs Some are the result of a lucky accident, combined with curiosity. Scientists traveling down one road suddenly find reason to switch to another road, one they have never planned to travel—a road that may well lead nowhere.
1.________ One day, usually initially in their career, they get an idea they can't stop thinking about. It's crazy, they say to themselves, but is it really impossible They talk to respected colleagues who often remind them of all the reasons that their ideas might not work, and how damaging this could be to their career. Yet, the idea won't die and they are determined to travel that road—a road that may well lead nowhere. 2.________
Whichever road scientists who achieve lifesaving breakthroughs travel, they often endure disinterest, like Fleming, who discovered penicillin (青霉素) due to lucky accidents and curiosity, or repeated skepticism and rejection, like Karikó, who made all mRNA vaccines possible with years of persistence and resilience. By bringing their dreams to life, they were rewarded with fame, wealth and something even more valuable. 3.________
Of course, the obsession (痴迷) with an unlikely dream fails to pay off for many scientists. 4.________ Nature doesn't turn out to operate the way they have predicted it. In the end, their beautiful theory is killed by brutal facts. For those dreamers on the right track, they would have achieved their dreams—if only they had done the experiment a little differently, if only they had persisted a little longer, or if only the support for their work had not run out.
Ultimately, scientific breakthroughs are possible only if a society is willing to invest in dreamers, recognizing that not all investments will lead to major breakthroughs. 5.________ Above all, the investments prevent suffering and death and change the world.
A.Some scientists are addicted to their crazy ideas.
B.Their ideas, though brilliant, in the end are proved wrong.
C.But they refuse to back down and struggle to find more financial support.
D.Because of them, millions of people around the world avoid getting sick or death.
E.Other major breakthroughs originate from scientists pursuing a specific idea.
F.But sometimes the road leads to major breakthroughs like X rays and vaccines.
G.However, the investments leading to breakthroughs bring a greater economic return.

[1]I was nearly twenty two, about to graduate, and unsure which to follow—my head and my long interest in natural science, or my heart and my passion for photography. A job at the museum would be the safe choice. Or I could try to pursue a career in architectural photography, even though I had no specific training in the field. I longed to land that job.
[2]I asked the advisor, John Smith, to recommend someone qualified to give me an objective opinion. His reply:“See Benjamin Moskowitz, a famous architect, NYC. Good luck.”
[3]During the Spring break I booked a cheap room and took the train to New York City. At his office on the twenty third floor I asked the receptionist for Mr. Moskowitz.“I think Mr. Moskowitz has already left, Miss. I know he was planning a long weekend. Did you have an appointment?”...
[4]She sighed and asked my name and told me to wait while she tried to see if he might still be there.I paced nervously, thinking that my time and money and my best chance for an expert opinion had been thrown away. The receptionist rang his office; no answer.“Sorry, but it looks like you're out of luck, Miss White,” she said.
[5]Why hadn't I planned this better Called for an appointment Taken an earlier train How could I have made such a mistake?Anxious, I was close to tears.
[6]Just then a tall, gray haired man, beautifully dressed, strode (阔步) through the reception area. The receptionist signaled me and mouthed, “That's him.” I didn't hesitate.“Oh, Mr. Moskowitz!”I called out. “Just a moment, sir, please! I'd like to speak to you.”
[7]He glanced at his expensive looking gold watch and kept walking.“Sorry, I have a train to catch,” he said straightforward.“I don't believe you had an appointment.” I hurried after him toward the elevator. “I apologize, sir, but I was told to talk to you and to show you some photographs.”

二、长难句的突破策略
INCLUDEPICTURE "感知经典LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "../../感知经典LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT
1.主从复合句——找从属关联词
Whereas a woman's closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn't unusual to hear a man say he didn't know his friend's marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.
[分析] Whereas 引导让步状语从句,即“a woman's closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage”;而“it wasn't unusual to hear a man say”为主句, 其中it为形式主语,真正的主语为动词不定式。“he didn't know his friend's marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa”为省略连接词that的宾语从句,其中含有“not...until”引导的时间状语从句;从句中又含有省略连接词that的宾语从句“his friend's marriage was in serious trouble”和从属连词if引导的宾语从句“if he could sleep on the sofa”。
2.并列复合句——先找并列连词,再找从属关联词
If you ask people to name one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare” “Samuel Johnson” and “Webster”, but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn't even speak English—William the Conqueror.
[分析] 首先找到并列连词but,“If you ask...‘Webster’”为but连接的第一个分句,“none of these men...the Conqueror”为第二个分句; 第一个分句中含有If引导的条件状语从句,从句中又含有who引导的定语从句;第二个分句中含有who引导的定语从句。

分析句子
(1)(2024·新高考全国卷Ⅰ)After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber's treatments eased her dog's suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months.
[分析] 本句是并列复合句。句中but连接两个并列分句,在第一个分句中含有After引导的时间状语从句;在第二个分句中含有that引导的结果状语从句。
(2)(2024·新高考全国卷Ⅱ)She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.
[分析] 本句是主从复合句。现在分词短语“making for...”在句中作结果状语,其中含有两个which引导的定语从句,修饰先行词a guide。

Ⅰ.分析下面的长难句
1.(2024·全国甲卷)That's why most pet cats are able to tell immediately if their owners were around any other cats, which they don't usually like.
[分析] 本句是主从复合句。句中why引导表语从句;if引导条件状语从句;which引导非限制性定语从句。
2.(2024·全国甲卷)He suggested I think about the difference between endings that I wanted for the characters and endings that were right for the characters, endings that satisfied the story even if they didn't have a traditionally positive outcome.
[分析] 本句是主从复合句。句中动词suggested后跟着一个省略连接词that的宾语从句“ I think about...”,其中介词短语“between...and...”作后置定语修饰difference;三个endings后跟that引导的定语从句;第三个从句中含有even if引导的让步状语从句。
3.(2024·浙江卷1月)We're not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets—all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers.
[分析] 本句是并列复合句。句中“not...but...”意为“不是……而是……”;其中介词短语“by sugary treats”和“by our computers, phones, and tablets”作方式状语;“all the devices”是“computers, phones,and tablets”的同位语,对其进行解释说明;两个that均引导定语从句,第二个that引导的从句中what引导宾语从句作动词do的宾语。
4.(2024·浙江卷1月)We are tempted by sugary treats because our ancestors lived in a calorie poor world, and our brains developed a response mechanism to these treats that reflected their value—a feeling of reward and satisfaction.
[分析] 本句是并列复合句。and连接两个并列分句,在第一个分句中含有because引导的原因状语从句;在第二个分句中含有that引导的定语从句,a feeling of reward and satisfaction是value的同位语。

Good evening. This is Mark Vapor with the Nightly News at nine. Our top story tonight is the train crash on the Red Line. We've just gotten a report from police on the scene that fortunately, no one was seriously injured. The accident apparently occurred because of an electrical problem with the track signals.Traffic in the area is stopped,so drivers should avoid going to the Hilltop area for the next few hours until the accident is cleared up.This is also,of course, causing major delays for train riders. Check the city's website for up to date train times. The rest of the city looks good for a Friday night. Traffic is still backing up on the bridge heading east, but it should clear up in about an hour.Westward traffic has no delays. And now, let's take a look at the weather for this weekend.Tonight, skies will remain clear. There will be some fog early tomorrow morning, especially on the south side of the city. That should go away by 11:00,and then temperatures will quickly rise from a morning high of 76 degrees to 91 degrees by 3:00 pm. Sunday will follow the same pattern, but the hottest it will get is 87 degrees. Enjoy your Friday night and don't forget to come back tomorrow morning with me,Mark Vapor.I'll bring you the top headlines and traffic updates every hour from seven until noon.

An egg is kept on top of a cardboard toilet paper roll, which is on a plate that is resting on a glass of water. On the count of three, Tatiana Erukhimova quickly removes the plate, which, along with the roll, flies sideways and allows the egg to fall into the glass. She knew this would happen, thanks to the law of inertia (惯性), but Erukhimova still celebrates it.
Since this first video was posted on December 13, 2021, Erukhimova has received millions of views for her physics practical experiments, according to Texas A&M TODAY. “I could never get bored in her class,” reads one of the comments on the egg drop video.
Erukhimova moved from Russia to College Station in 1999 to take up a research position at Texas A&M. Both her parents are physicists. “Passion for physics runs in my family,” she said. She worked at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Applied Physics before taking the position at Texas A&M.
When she was offered a part time position instructing a junior level course, Erukhimova had no teaching experience. It turned out to be a success even though the class only had 30 students. “After three years of teaching this class, I felt I was an experienced instructor. And then in 2006 at eight in the morning, I found myself in front of a large introductory physics class with more than 100 freshmen,” she recalled. That first day, Erukhimova said, was a “disaster”. The students were uninterested in her class. That experience is what taught her the importance of getting students interested in the subject.
Now she believes in giving demonstrative classes. Erukhimova does this by applying abstract physics concepts to everyday life. “I strongly believe everyone has to get a chance to play with physics and learn how much fun it is,” she said.
While sharing her love for physics is nothing new for Erukhimova, she has been pleasantly surprised by the number of people she's been able to reach through her videos.

Stuffed animals have often been seen as one of the strange conventions of childhood—a childish love we should eventually let go of, along with imaginary friends. If that love lasts past adolescence, it can be seen as embarrassing.
Yet that isn't really such an unusual thing to do: Surveys have found that four in ten American adults sleep with stuffed animals. And it seems that over the past few years especially, plushies (毛绒玩具) and toys have become more popular with adults. This isn't necessarily a matter of childhood keepsakes tagging along into adulthood for sentimental reasons—adults are buying plushies for themselves, simply because they like them. The “kidult” market, which is defined as anyone over age 12, is said to account for about $9 billion in toy sales every year. Gen Z is leading the way in embracing stuffed animals. “It went from being an embarrassment...to today, when Gen Z and Millennials proudly play,” the toy industry consultant Richard Gottlieb told NPR.
Of course, plenty of people still find it odd or childish for adults to collect stuffed animals. When an online influencer posted a photo of herself lounging with a small army of colorful stuffed animals, some commenters were quick to deride her collection. She responded with frustration: “Everyone expects me to be this adult all the time,” she wrote (she was 16 at the time), “I'm still growing up.”
I, for one, am not immune to the adult stuffed animal revival. As a child, I wasn't super interested in plushies; I saw them as useless, candyless pinatas (彩罐). But in my early 20s, many of my friends started buying and gifting stuffed animals. One friend consulted me on whether the name Belly or Lulu would better suit a stuffed dragon. On my 21st birthday, someone gave me my own stuffed animal. I placed it on my bed with no shame, knowing that many of my peers were doing the same.

We are often told that we are at the heart of a technological revolution, in which business and the world of work continue to be transformed and improved by computers, the Internet, the increased speed of communication, data processing, robotics, and now—artificial intelligence.
There is only one small problem with all this—none of it seems to show up in the economic data. If all this technology really is making us all work faster and better, there is precious little evidence. Between 1974 and 2008 the UK's productivity—the amount of output you get per worker—grew at an annual rate of 2.3%. But between 2008 and 2020 the rate of productivity growth collapsed to around 0.5% per year. And in the first three months of this year, the UK's productivity was actually down 0.6% on a year earlier. It is a similar picture in most other Western nations.
There are said to be two main explanations for why technology is not boosting productivity.
The first is that we are just not measuring the impact of technology properly. Dame Diane Coyle, a recognized expert on how we measure productivity, says, “There is nothing that doesn't involve digital technology now, but it is difficult to see what is going on because none of this is visible in the statistics. We just don't collect the data in ways that would help us understand what is happening.”
The other argument is that economic revolutions tend to be rather slow burning affairs. Nick Crafts, a former professor at the University of Sussex Business School, points out that the huge changes in economic performance we tend to think of as having happened almost overnight actually took decades, and the same may well be happening now.
Technology is seemingly not the problem, and in some respects it is not the solution either. High productivity growth will come only to those who learn how to use it best.

A 解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Between 1974 and 2008...It is a similar picture in most other Western nations.”可知,第二段中的比较表明技术并没有带来预期的生产力提升。
33.Why is it difficult to see the impact of technology on the economy
A.There aren't enough recognized experts.
B.Technology is used in an improper way.
C.There is no proper measurement equipment.
D.The collected data doesn't reflect the technology.
D 解析:细节理解题。根据第四段中的“There is nothing...help us understand what is happening.”可知,收集的数据并没有反映出技术对经济的影响。
34.What is the common understanding of past economic changes according to Crafts
A.They appeared by making use of technology.
B.They came decades after technological changes.
C.They occurred unexpectedly in a very short time.
D.They happened in a way different from those nowadays.
C 解析:细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“points out that the huge changes...having happened almost overnight actually took decades”可知,人们普遍认为这种经济表现是在一夜之间就发生的。
35.What is the author's opinion on technology

B.It is developing more slowly than we expected.

D.It contributes to high productivity if fully used.

第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The prize may go to the fastest, but sometimes, the first one to cross the finish line isn't the only winner.Nowhere was that more true that at 5K invitational (邀请赛) in Shelbyville, Indiana.
There were two players in the match:Levi LaGrange and Axel Aleman, who hadn't known each other before.Levi LaGrange,a 16 year old student from Western Boone Junior Senior High School, has been expecting to be a professional sportsman for many years.Axel Aleman, who is from Sheridan High School, is a friendly and generous person and is always more concerned about others than himself.Axel once said to his classmates,“When you are standing at a crossroad, you can choose the path of self interest, or you can go the extra mile for someone in need.As a teen athlete, the choice is extremely clear.”
The game went very well at first. However, with less that half a mile to go, Levi slipped, twisting (扭伤) his ankle. He said,“I was running up the little rolling hill and I hurt my ankle. I felt something was wrong with my ankle.”
Levi stopped and signed to Axel to pass him.Generally, winning a match should be the mission for a sportsman. But at that moment, the race became a secondary concern for Axel. “I was able to see he was in a lot of pain,”Axel recalled.
Rather than running ahead, Axel refused to leave Levi behind.“As soon as I saw him, I knew I had to do something,”Axel said.“It just seemed like the right thing to do.That mattered more than the race.I told him I wasn't going to leave.I wanted to help him finish the match.”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Seconds later, Axel ran closer to Levi.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Axel gained a lot from the incident.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Seconds later, Axel ran closer to Levi. Axel picked Levi up and encouraged him to hold on to the end. Placing an encouraging hand on his competitor's back, Axel stayed with Levi for the rest of the race. He even sang a song to cheer Levi up. They moved forward side by side, with eyes looking at the finish line. Eventually, the two crossed the finish line together. Axel even made sure Levi went first. To their surprise, the event organizer announced that they were both winners.
Axel gained a lot from the incident. In the following days, Axel received lots of positive comments now and then. While he might have enjoyed the praise for his kindness, for him, the best gain was the friendship with Levi. We might not always have such rare chances, but when life hands us an opportunity to help others, we should take action. Axel said, “I would just really hope people to do the right thing.” Yes, we should do that, not for others, but for ourselves.
