I am a long-distance runner. When I was thirty-one, I was in a serious car accident. The doctors told me that they would try to get me to walk “normally” but I would never run again—terrible news for someone who views running as the oxygen she breathes. The doctors were right. For the next nine and a half years, I was unable to run more than twenty-five feet.
In 2006, I began self-training to take part in a 60-mile walk. Three months into preparing, I realised that walking 4-5 hours a day was too long. If only I could jog part of it—that would cost me less time. I started jogging without my knees aching. Slowly, I increased the distance. The doctors were proved wrong—it only took nine and a half years to do so.
While practising, I suffered a loss—a dear friend suddenly died. His work had been to help women to accept themselves and reach their fullest potential. He believed that people should let nothing hold them back from achieving their goals. Soon after his death, a crazy thought entered my mind: what if I could run the LA Marathon I knew that if I didn’t train to my fullest, the doctors would win. So I trained seven days a week. And I succeeded in crossing the finish lines of many marathons all over the United States to the astonishment of my doctors. They never believed I would achieve that.
The aches and pains I experience while training and racing are nothing compared to the suffering people whom I respect must accept.

C
In the classic movie The Mighty Ducks, a group of ice hockey players band together, get better, and eventually win. That’s the dream of players on losing teams. But for many kids’ sports teams, it doesn’t. There is no winning, no victory cheers.
Most people don’t like losing, with the discouraging record on the scoreboard, watching while the other team’s players throw victorious hands in the air. Parents adjust complex family schedules for seemingly countless practices, then wonder what it’s all for when their child’s team never comes home a winner. So is losing all the time really good for children It can be. Experts agree that losing at sports, no matter how unending, can allow children to learn from failure. Losing all the time builds philosophy, friendship, sportsmanship, and the idea of athletics as a series of increasing victories. The team may struggle, but teammates improve moment by moment.
Milt Shapiro, who lives in Washington, coaches a team that lost “by soccer scores”. He doesn’t worry if a player cries, even though tears upset parents. “I love the fact that he’s crying, which means he cares and he’s passionate. We will change that into something we can use on the field. I would focus on small victories within each game,” he says.
Sports psychologist Caroline Silby, who practises in the Washington area, says in an email that the real problem with losing all the time lies with the parents. Trying to make children win all the time can be harmful. Also, losing is not such a big deal that it should be covered up. If parents don’t speak about games or seasons that ended badly, children may think that means that failure is so awful that they shouldn’t even talk about it.
Also, Silby says, if parents get angry, blame unskilled players, or talk endlessly about a loss, they ruin the whole point of being on a team: A sense of belonging. Athletes who have that feeling—that they are connected to something larger than themselves—are less stressed and have higher self-esteem (自尊心). And overall, she says, losing seasons can give athletes some perspective and help them grow better at managing frustration and doubt.
( )28. What’s the experts’ opinion about children’s losing at sports
A. It exercises parents’ patience.
B. It’s beneficial to kids’ growth.
C. It makes a team less competitive.
D. It leads to children’s short-lived emotion.
( )29. How does Milt Shapiro react to his team’s loss
A. He changes their training plans.
B. He gets angry with his students.
C. He comforts players with small gifts.
D. He treats it as a learning opportunity.
( )30. What does Caroline Silby advise parents to do
A. Hide kids’ losing properly.
B. Put more effort into kids’ training.
C. Encourage kids to face failure directly.
D. Draw kids’ attention to things beyond games.
( )31. What would be the best title for the text
A. How Do Kids React to Losing at Sports
B. How Does Losing at Sports Impact Children
C. How Can Losing at Sports Be Good for Kids
D. How Should Coaches Respond to Children’s Losing
D
Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become professional. Many correlated the training to petitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills, provide health benefits, and offer special opportunities.
To begin with, sports teach children life skills. A formal athlete stated, “I played soccer in high school and college and found team sports weren’t just about winning, but also about developing a solid ethic (行为准则), and learning why that’s important.” In short, playing highly competitive sports teaches kids many life skills like teamwork. People will have to use teamwork for the rest of their life, and sports can help them improve that skill. Taking part in sports can help develop a positive attitude towards life, which will help in the long run.
Sports are also good for kids because they provide health benefits. It is healthier for a kid to play a sport competitively than to waste time playing video games all day. Furthermore, a research group of University of California said, “96 percent of the participants (参与者) said they enjoy their sports. They’re all loving life.” That is to say, kids playing highly competitive sports tend to enjoy life instead of doing something else like watching TV.
On the other hand, some people might argue that competitive sports are bad for young children because they are so time-consuming. However, the time spent is not “robbing” kids of their childhood, but offers unique opportunities. Athletes can achieve success to live their dream life by playing sports. Even though sports are time-consuming, they offer distinctive opportunities.
In conclusion, competitive sports are good for children because they can provide wholesome benefits, create new experiences, and build skills that will last a lifetime.

Last weekend, I went to Mark’s new house nearby a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey Thoran, have you ever been to a secret spot ” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket (桶).
We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.
“Hey! What are you guys doing ” Someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “Who was that ”
Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbour ever. If he caught up with us, there’s no telling what could happen. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. “Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

M: We only have ten miles left until we run out!
W: Maybe we’ll see a station soon. Just keep driving.
M: I’m worried.
W: It’s going to be fine. The worst thing that can happen is that we’ll have to call a truck to come and get us.
M: I don’t even have phone service out here. Do you
W: Oh, I guess I don’t either. Okay, now we really have to find a gas station.
M: We have five miles left now!
W: Look! I see one! Get off the highway at the next exit!
M: Wow, that was a close call. Well, lucky us!

( B )28. What’s the experts’ opinion about children’s losing at sports
A. It exercises parents’ patience.
B. It’s beneficial to kids’ growth.
C. It makes a team less competitive.
D. It leads to children’s short-lived emotion.
( D )29. How does Milt Shapiro react to his team’s loss
A. He changes their training plans.
B. He gets angry with his students.
C. He comforts players with small gifts.
D. He treats it as a learning opportunity.
( C )30. What does Caroline Silby advise parents to do
A. Hide kids’ losing properly.
B. Put more effort into kids’ training.
C. Encourage kids to face failure directly.
D. Draw kids’ attention to things beyond games.

Let me take a photo of you two,” Cody said, taking out the camera. Hearing that, I quickly approached Mark. But all of a sudden I lost my balance and fell into the water.
Paragraph 2:
“Help!Help!Help!” I was so frightened and cried for help. However, none of us could swim. Mark and Cody tried to pull me up from the water but in vain. Struggling in the water, I was almost exhausted when I felt myself lifted by someone. It was Mark’s neighbour, who followed us there and saw what had happened. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water and I was saved.
