第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Are You a Morning Person
Mornings are not for everyone. Knowing that our own bodies may be wired to prefer a certain time of day is certainly a relief. But many of us still have to wake up and function during those first daylight hours. So what can you do
We tapped a variety of experts—from sleep experts to nutritionists to life organisational pros (生活管理达人)—to share their tricks on how to make morning less stressful and more pleasant for even the most after-hours of night owls.
Night waking
Poor sleep quality can explain why we sometimes wake up from eight hours of snoozing (打盹) and feel like we only clocked in at four. “It’s normal to have one or two awakenings, but more than that leaves us feeling groggy (昏昏沉沉的) in the morning because of the fragmented sleep,” explains Shelby Harris, director of the behavioural sleep medicine programme at Montefiore Medical Centre.
The science of snoozing
The snooze button does more harm than good. Nodding off again sends you into a light and fragmented sleep! Multiple snoozes can leave you feeling groggier than just getting out of bed the first time. Instead, be honest about the time you intend to get up and then enjoy every last minute of sleep, so you can wake up alert and ready to go.
Don’t ease into your workday
It can be tempting to plow through the easy things early on—checking e-mail, scanning the headlines—but it’s wise to tackle the bigger stuff first. “Getting to work on the most important tasks not only increases the chances that they actually get done, but it also leaves you with a burst of accomplishment to take with you the rest of the day,” says Jason Selk, coauthor of Organise Tomorrow Today.
Save social media for later
Schedule a social media block later in the afternoon to check in when you’re likely to need a break anyway, and save the morning for the important stuff.
( )21. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To help us to get the most out of our mornings.
B. To relieve us from the guilt of multiple snoozes in the morning.
C. To warn us of the harm of not getting out of bed immediately.
D. To inform us about the fact that our bodies are wired to prefer a certain time of day.
( )22. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. One or two awakenings ensure us a good night’s sleep.
B. To be an early bird, better forget about the snooze button.
C. It’s important not to block social medium if you want to save your morning.
D. Beginning a day with easy things aroused our interest and a sense of accomplishment.
( )23. Where can we find the passage
A. Classified Advertisement.
B. Travel Brochure.
C. Life and Study.
D. Scientific Journal.
B
As I sat on my sofa, I recalled the joy I had experienced back in my glory days, winning National Championships and representing the United States at the World Championships. I thought of all of the friends I had made in sports.
It had been a decade since I entered a competition. Strangely, tears began to roll down my cheeks. Then, for the first time in many years, I wept openly. I tried to calm myself and walked to the bathroom to wash my face. It was there that I took a good, long, hard look at myself in the mirror.
I was no longer that marathon runner. I was a middle-aged man to sit behind the desk in my office for the day and had grown content in my life and appeared comfortable with the increase in the size of my waistline.
When I took a serious look at myself, I knew it was time to change. I lacked discipline (自制力) and had no readily identifiable goals. Strange quiet came over me. I was going to transform my life. It was time to reinvent myself, to become all that I could imagine. I asked myself one more question, “What are you willing to do to make this dream a reality ” The answer was a very simple one, “Whatever it takes!”
The first few days, I was filled with enthusiasm and it was easy to stay on track. I prepared myself mentally for the difficult days. As the days went by, my newly discovered discipline developed into more discipline. I vowed (发誓) to remain true to my restricted diet of 1,200 calories per day. I was running for an hour every morning and lifting weights for another hour three or four days per week. Weight began to reduce. I lost about three pounds every week. This was feeling good. I was gaining momentum and strength as each day passed. There was no doubt in my mind that I would get down to my desired weight.

If you feel that making friends as a kid is easy, you’re right. “They have a break between lessons and gym classes. They have more time to get along with each other,” says Marisa G. Franco, an expert from the University of Maryland. However, it’s not the case for adults. Even though they see their workmates every day, they still find it never easy to be friends with them.
In the US, for example, a 2021 study by the American Enterprise Institute, found that the number of adults who said they had no close friends had increased four times since 1990, going from 3 percent to 12 percent. “We’ve never been more disconnected,” says psychologist (心理学家) Jody Carrington. Although adults spend time together from 9∶00 a.m. to 6∶00 p.m. and even late into the night, the busy work pattern which means that communication is limited to the content of the work, and after work, they immediately go back home, leaving no extra energy to have unplanned communication to develop further friendship.
Research by Brigham Young University psychologist Julianne Holt-Lunstad has shown that loneliness is a big threat (威胁) to long life, same as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or being a heavy drinker. People who are lonely are more likely to have serious diseases. On the other side, healthy friendships can help us a lot, doing better with stress and living happier and longer. Besides, happiness is contagious. Harvard experts found that when a person becomes happy, his or her friends living within 1.6 kilometres are also 25 percent more likely to become happier.
So, making friends is more important than we think. You may think that making friends is an inborn skill and doesn’t need to be taught. It’s not the case. We can improve our ability to connect with others if we try. Some experts provide advice to make it easier to find connection.

Almost all calligraphy lovers agree that writing characters with a brush and ink on straw paper offers a way to communicate with not only history and culture, but also oneself. But now Chinese character handwriting is under threat from computers and mobile phones.
A college graduate looking for a job was reportedly turned down by a company because he wrote 24 characters incorrectly in a 400-character handwritten resume. A survey by HorizonKey, covering people from 12 major cities in China, found that nearly one third of those interviewed often experience “character amnesia (遗忘)”, with 94 percent saying this is a problem for them.
The main reason is that most Chinese rely too much on the pinyin-based Chinese language input method, which is replacing the tradition of writing characters stroke (笔画) by stroke. The software will conveniently choose the right characters according to the context or word frequency, as there are dozens of characters with the same pronunciation in Chinese.
Education is another problem. In college, most homework and papers are printed out, instead of handwritten. And few teachers use chalk and blackboards, with Microsoft’s PowerPoint the most-often used software to teach knowledge to students.
The number of electronic devices in the classroom is thought to be another reason why students are easily satisfied with just a poor knowledge of the Chinese language and characters. It is quicker to look up a character in an electronic dictionary, but traditional printed dictionaries offer more detailed information on the usage and meaning of the characters. Students pay more attention to remembering a character’s pronunciation, but not the other knowledge related to it, which e-dictionaries rarely provide.
Another worry is the “pollution” of Chinese characters by Internet language. Young people regard using Internet language as cool and fashionable. After they learn to use these expressions, they automatically include them in their writing.
( )32. With the example of a college graduate, the author shows .
A. that practising can improve writing
B. why certain people are poor writers
C. that there are differences in students’ writing
D. why Chinese character handwriting is in great danger
( )33. By saying “…those interviewed often experience ‘character amnesia’”, the author means those interviewed .
A. are not good at handwriting
B. can’t write characters accurately
C. show no interest in handwriting
D. find jobs much more difficultly
( )34. What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 5
A. Dependence on electronic devices.
B. Advantages of electronic dictionaries.
C. Mastery of knowledge of the characters.
D. Disadvantages of published dictionaries.
( )35. What’s the author’s attitude towards the Internet language
A. Favourable.
B. Uncaring.
C. Disapproving.
D. Friendly.

Be Your Own Best Friend
Why would you want to become your own best friend There are a number of benefits of creating your own support system from within rather than relying on your partner, friends or family to be there for you when you’re suffering. We all have it in us to give ourselves what we need, without seeking it from outside. 36 Here’s how to become your own best friend.
Be nice to yourself.
The first step in becoming a friend to yourself is to treat yourself like you would treat a friend. 37 Start by accepting your good qualities, talents and abilities and begin to appreciate yourself.
Imagine how you would support a friend in the same situation.
Think about a loved one, a friend, a family member, or someone dear to you and imagine that they are in the same situation you are facing. 38 Then consider how to best offer help and advice to them. Allow yourself to feel supported, and give yourself what you need.
Write down the words that you would say to your greatest friend and then say them gently to yourself.
 39
Following the theme of considering how you would help a dear friend, you need to start taking your own advice and putting your own needs first. Do you need a day off from work 40
Whatever it is that you need, allow yourself to put it at the top of the list rather than the bottom. Use these methods to become your own best friend and start being there for yourself!
A. Honour your needs.
B. Help yourself.
C. A long hot bath
D. Help them first and then they will help you.
E. That means that you need to stop being doubtful of yourself.
F. Think about how they’re struggling, suffering with this problem.
G. Isn’t it far better to know how to support yourself in times of need

Ella and Jenny were best friends. They had known each other since Jenny moved next door three years ago. They hung out almost every day after school, exploring the world around them. They had a lot of fun, but like any friends, they sometimes had disagreements because they were very different people.
Ella was a hard-working girl who did well in her school work, loved reading books, and took ballet classes. On the other hand, Jenny was outgoing. She would rather play soccer, chat with classmates at school, and couldn’t sit still long enough to finish reading a story book. In spite of their differences, they always found a way to have fun together.
Usually, they would play together at the park across the street. They would play on the sports equipment, race around the playground, or play soccer with a group of kids in their neighbourhood. On rainy days, they would go in one of their houses to make artworks, play video games, or paint each other’s nails. They could spend hours and hours together.
While most days were filled with laughter and shared adventures, there were times when they couldn’t agree on what to do. One day, Ella wanted to play with the playground equipment, while Jenny preferred to play soccer on the freshly-cut grass.
Ella suggested they should play with the equipment as they had already played soccer for three days. However, Jenny, with her eyes shining eagerly, argued that they should play soccer because the grass in the field had just been cut and it was nice and short.
“We always do what you want to do, Jenny. Can’t we try something different for once ” said Ella, feeling upset.

M: Did you watch the NBA game last night
W: No, I didn’t see it. In fact, I almost never watch NBA games.
M: What You’ve got to be kidding! Basketball is the best thing on TV.
W: All it is a bunch of men in shorts running around with a ball. What’s so great about that
M: What’s so great about it Why, it’s the greatest sport ever, that’s what! To play a basketball game requires a lot of athletic ability, determination, and speed. It’s a very fast game, and it’s very exciting to watch.
W: Well, I think it’s silly. All the players do is throw the ball, and run around trying to take the ball from each other. I just don’t understand it. I’d much rather watch a movie, a talk show, or even a game show than a basketball game!
M: Well, I can see that we are never going to agree on this. Let’s change the subject. So, what do you want to do this weekend

W: Dave, I’m going to work in Asia from the New York office.
M: Right. And they’re letting you choose which city, aren’t they
W: Yeah. The only problem is that I don’t know much about Asia. You’ve worked in all our offices in Asia. Can you give me some advice
M: Sure. Well, I think I started out in Bangkok. There were amazing temples there. It’s not expensive to live there, too.
W: What about Seoul You worked there too, right
M: Uh-huh. Seoul’s a rather big city, but I always felt safe there, even late at night. I often went to the all-night market called Namdaemun. I didn’t like its spicy food, though.
W: And Singapore
M: Well, Singapore isn’t very big but it’s very convenient to get around. And the food there is great.
W: Hmm…It’s not going to be easy to decide. They all sound great.
Text 10
Last summer I went to Miami Beach, Florida, where I stayed for two weeks. My friend John and I flew to Miami from New York in three hours. It was the first time for both of us to travel by air. We sat near the window of the plane and enjoyed an unusual and beautiful view of the world. We went there because the cost was lower. We stayed at a hotel on the beach. We slept late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors near the pool. When the weather was not too hot, we went sightseeing in the morning. In the afternoon, we would go swimming in the ocean, lie in the sun, or go water-skiing. After dinner in the evening, we usually went dancing or enjoyed ourselves in the bar. The two weeks went by too quickly. We were both very sorry when we had to leave.

( D )32. With the example of a college graduate, the author shows .
A. that practising can improve writing
B. why certain people are poor writers
C. that there are differences in students’ writing
D. why Chinese character handwriting is in great danger
( B )33. By saying “…those interviewed often experience ‘character amnesia’”, the author means those interviewed .
A. are not good at handwriting
B. can’t write characters accurately
C. show no interest in handwriting
D. find jobs much more difficultly
( A )34. What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 5
A. Dependence on electronic devices.
B. Advantages of electronic dictionaries.
C. Mastery of knowledge of the characters.
D. Disadvantages of published dictionaries.
( C )35. What’s the author’s attitude towards the Internet language
A. Favourable.
B. Uncaring.
C. Disapproving.
D. Friendly.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
“Fine! Go play by yourself. I will play soccer,” Jenny shouted. After talking, Jenny ran to the grass to play soccer alone. She played soccer for a while, but she found herself very bored. Without Ella’s cooperation, she lacked a lot of motivation. Ella was able to pass, control the ball and shoot perfectly, surprising her every time. She thought about it, maybe what Ella said was right, she should play with the playground equipment. After all, every time Ella would follow her own advice, which was unfair to her. She ran back and said. “Ella, as you said, we should play with the playground equipment.”
Paragraph 2:
Ella’s face lit up when she heard what Jenny said. Ella couldn’t believe Jenny would follow her advice. It was the first time she had felt that her advice mattered. Jenny took Ella’s hand and ran happily to the playground equipment. They played happily, as if the unhappy things had never happened. They were still best friends.
