Banff National Park is Canada’s first national park and was recognised in 1885. Located in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Banff includes 6,641 square kilometres of glaciers and ice fields, thick coniferous forest, and alpine (高山的) scenery. The Icefields Park-way stretches from Lake Louise, connecting to Jasper National Park in the north. Provincial forests and Yoho National Park are neighbours to the west while Kootenay National Park is situated to the south. The main commercial centre of the park is the town of Banff, in the Bow River valley.
The Canadian Pacific Railway was pivotal in Banff’s early years, building the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise Hotel in the park and attracting tourists through widespread advertising. In the early 20th century, roads were built in Banff, at times by prisoners of World War I, and through Great Depression-era public works projects. As Banff has over three million visitors annually, the health of its ecology has been endangered. In the mid-1990s, Parks Canada launched a two-year study to preserve ecological integrity.
Banff National Park has a subarctic climate (副极地气候) with three ecoregions. The forests feature lodgepole pine at lower elevation and Engelmann spruce at higher ones below the tree line, above which are chiefly rocks and ice. Mammal (哺乳动物) species such as the grizzly bear, cougar, wolverine, moose and bighorn sheep are found along with hundreds of bird species. Reptiles (爬行动物) are also found but only a restricted number of species have been recorded.
The mountains were formed from sedimentary rocks (沉积岩) which were pushed east over newer rock formations, between 80 and 55 million years ago. Over the previous few million years, glaciers have at times covered most of the park, but today are found only on the mountainsides though they include the Columbia Icefield, the largest continuous glacial mass in the Rockies. Erosion (侵蚀) from water and ice has molded the mountains into their existing shapes.

Nola (21 August 1974—22 November 2015) was a northern white rhino (犀牛) who lived at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park near Escondido, California. At her death, she was one of only four remaining northern white rhinos in the world. The other three lived in Kenya. World Rhino Day, held on 22 September, is to raise awareness of the less than 30,000 other rhinos left on the Earth.
“Rhinos need our help today, not tomorrow,” Nola’s lead keeper Jane Kennedy said. “Last year we lost over 1,200 rhinos just in South Africa. If we continue to lose more than 1,000 rhinos a year, in 10 to 20 years all the rhinos on the planet will be gone.”
“Unfortunately, most animals are in danger of dying out because of humans,” Kennedy says. “Humans have either poached (偷猎) animals, or because there are over seven billion of us, we’ve taken up too much of the world’s resources.” Poachers illegally hunt rhinos for their horns. They sell the horns for thousands of dollars per pound, to be used for art, jewelry, and decorations. Experts believe that one rhino is poached every eight hours.
In 1975, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research started the Frozen Zoo, a programme through which researchers have collected cell samples from more than 8,000 different types of animals, including the northern white rhino. Scientists hope that by studying the rhino cells, they will get greater understanding of it, and will find ways to increase its numbers.
Jane Kennedy describes World Rhino Day as “a celebration of rhinos along with an awareness campaign for everybody across the world to know that rhinos need our help.” At the San Diego Zoo, children and adults are welcome to visit and speak with zookeepers to learn about rhinos. But you don’t have to live in San Diego to celebrate World Rhino Day. It is observed around the world, with zoos and wildlife parks holding special events and programmes to teach people about rhinos, and enable them to see the animals up close. For more information, go to the official website.

Ⅴ. 阅读理解
Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney’s entertainment parks in California, Florida and Japan each year. What makes these places an almost universal attraction What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks Well, one reason is the way they’re treated once they get there. The people at Disney go out of their way to serve their “guests”, as they prefer to call them, and to see that they enjoy themselves.
All new employees, from vice presidents to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions Ⅰ”. Here, they learn about the company’s history, how it is managed and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how their part is important in making the park a success.
After passing “Traditions Ⅰ”, the employees go on to do more specialised training for their special jobs. No detail is missed. A simple job like taking tickets requires four eight-hour days of training. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple ordinary job, he replied, “What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or what bus to take back to the campgrounds … We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to help our guests enjoy the park.”
Even Disney’s managers get involved in the daily management of the park. Every year, the managers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail (单轨车) and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the entertainment park come alive. The managers agree that this week helps them to see the company’s goals more clearly.
All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney Productions famous. Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or in the world. As one long-time business observer once said, “How Disney treats people, communicates with them, rewards them, is in my view the very reason for his fifty years of success… I have watched very carefully and with great respect and admiration, the theory and practice of selling satisfaction and serving millions of people on a daily basis successfully. It is what Disney does best.”

A
After years of heated debate, grey wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.
Grey wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations—major food sources for the wolf—grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation (植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers.
As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The US Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the grey wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.

The Theme Park I Visited
Last summer, I visited Disneyland, which is one of the most famous theme parks in the world.
Walking through the park, I was amazed by its magical atmosphere. There were countless happy faces around. Taking photos with the beloved Disney characters was really a highlight. Riding on the thrilling roller coasters was an unforgettable experience.
What impressed me most was the parade. It was so spectacular that it attracted everyone’s attention. Watching the vivid performances and colorful floats passing by, I felt like I was in a fairy tale world. It was truly a day full of joy and wonder.
Indeed, visiting this theme park was a great adventure. Through exploring different areas of the park, I learned that whatever challenges we may face in life, we should always keep a positive attitude and embrace the unknown with courage. After all, life is like a theme park, full of surprises and possibilities waiting for us to discover.Unit 3 Fascinating Parks

Location: In Madhya Pradesh state, almost 200 kilometres northeast of Jabalpur. The nearest village is Tala, which is the access point of the park.
Opening Hours and Safari (游猎) Times
Safaris operate twice a day, starting at dawn until late morning, and midafternoon until sunset. The best time to visit the park is early in the morning or after 4 p.m. to spot the animals. The park is closed from 1 July to 30 September due to the monsoon season (季风季节).
Bandhavgarh Zones
Bandhavgarh is divided into three main zones: Tala (the park’s best zone, with the most tigers), Magdhi (the second best zone to see tigers), and Khitauli (scenic and less visited, although tiger sightings do occur there; particularly good for birding).

Bandhavgarh has become expensive to visit in recent years. Entry fees have increased since October 2024. When going on a safari, separate fees must be paid for park entry and jeep hire. Entry tickets are priced per vehicle (up to six people). For 2025—2026, park entry tickets cost as follows:
Tala Zone: 2,400 rupees for Indians, 4,800 rupees for foreigners. (Up to six people)
Other Zones: 1,200 rupees for Indians, 2,400 rupees for foreigners. (Up to six people)
Jeep Hire
Expect to pay about 2,200 rupees to hire a jeep, in addition to the entry cost. This can be done at the park entrance. All hotels can arrange jeep hire and tours, but at a higher rate.
( )5. What can we infer about Banff National Park
