When recalling my high school—Gonzaga College High School, I am excited. It was founded in 1821, which was in the centre part of Washington D.C., within shouting distance (距离) of the Capitol building.
Seeing my older brother experience Gonzaga a few years before me, I had an idea of how special this school was before I entered the school. Through him, I could see the pride and friendship among Gonzaga students.
My true love for Gonzaga, however, began in my freshman year. I remember during my freshman guidance (新生入学指导), the team spirit organisation sat our class down on the playground and taught us all the game cheers. I remember feeling a sense of energy and pride among these students that I had never experienced from a high school before. I mean, it was just a high school—how much school pride could these kids really have But it was not just a high school, and it only took a few football games for me to realize that I went to the most proud school in D.C.
I spent the rest of my first year meeting some of the coolest and most interesting people I have ever known. Some of the funniest, smartest and kindest guys I have ever met went to this school. No matter how athletic (擅长运动的) you were or how much money your parents had, you were just another Gonzaga kid. You were friends with everyone. If you went to Gonzaga, teacher or student, you were in on the joke.
When my freshman life came to an end, I began to understand what it meant to be a Gonzaga student. Serving the poor right there on Campus at the McKenna centre, I got a view on poor people that I will value for the rest of my life. Through football I learnt how to develop better self-control and built some of the greatest friendships. In the classroom, I had many laughs with friends and teachers alike. I also learnt how to manage my time and gained a lot of information, but most importantly, I learnt how to put the world and others before myself.

How to Get a Teacher to Like You
Are you looking to get a teacher on your good side Look for some extra points in participation. You don’t have to be a teacher’s pet, either.
Do work ahead.
1 It suggests that you care about the class. If you don’t do your homework, don’t lie to your teacher: offer to do extra assignments instead and then hand everything in on time or ahead of time.
 2
Some teachers want students to be quiet, requiring students to ask questions only when it is necessary, while others want you to always report back to them to show interest in the lesson. 3 You watch teachers’ reactions to other students. When you know what they like, do it as much as possible.
Be friendly.
Make conversations with your teachers, either after or before class. If they say something about their family, ask how it is going, especially if it is something difficult. 4 Also, if the teacher has a good sense of humour, joke with him/her sometimes.
Be respectful.
At the very least this means that you don’t talk back to or insult (侮辱) teachers. This might be difficult, but if you are polite to them, they will look stupid being rude to you. Just following directions can go a long way. 5 Find out their birthday and congratulate them. Respect your teachers. Make sure that you are always on time.
A. Know what your teacher likes.
B. Know how to get to your teacher’s office.
C. The teacher feels that you care about him/her.
D. Learn what your teacher likes by watching.
E. Always have a positive attitude and praise others’ work.

How to Make Friends
1 Indeed, there are many things in life which we alone cannot perform. We need friends’ help. Friends are people who willingly and readily help us when we are in trouble, and show sympathy (同情) for us when we are in misery (苦难).
2 For example, when we have passed the graduation examination and are looking for a job, we need experienced and reliable friends to guide us and help us on our way. A good friend is also an adviser because our own points of view towards things may not be always right. 3
Of course, we can make friends everywhere. However, I think the best place is school, where we are among a big number of boys and girls of our own age, so it is easy to get to know one another in a short time. 4
In order to make friends, we ourselves must be honest, noble-minded and kind-hearted to leave a favourable impression on others since other people observe us the same way as we do. At the same time, we should avoid bad friends.
5 Because they always do harm to us and moreover, they are dangerous to the people around. What is even worse, they destroy our friendship with good friends.
A. Indeed, looking for acquaintance (熟人) with bad friends would be a serious mistake.
B. A faithful friend is hard to find.
C. Therefore, it is necessary for us to seek advice from friends.
D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
E. Besides, we can also make friends among the people who work with us in the community.
F. A proverb says, “One man is not good enough to live alone in the world.”
G. The benefits of friendship are boundless (无限的) and sometimes invisible.
1. F 2. G 3. C 4. E

F. If you can, complete and hand in your homework in advance.
G. It is always a good idea to greet your teacher when you see him/her.
