Sometimes, you meet people who seem to have everything. They are calm and happy, and never look away from problems. Psychologists (心理学家) say these people are “self-actualized (自我实现的)”.
Psychologist Abraham Maslow used the word when he described his pyramid (金字塔) of needs in 1943. He said, “What a man can be, he must be. This need we may call self-actualization.” Abraham Maslow believes that human needs are grouped into different levels in a pyramid. Food, water, and air come first, followed by safety, love, and esteem (尊重). Self-actualization is at the top.
Psychologist Carl Rogers agrees with Abraham’s pyramid, saying self-actualization takes place when you act like who you want to be. He thinks “self-actualized” people are open to experiences, trust their own feelings and are always looking for new challenges.
Nearly 60 years later, Phil Olley sees self-actualization as rare yet possible. “Very few people experience self-actualization,” says Phil Olley. “It’s about living a life in your own way. It could be the definition (定义) of success, but of course, that will be different for different people.”
It seems far from us, right In fact, self-actualization isn’t so far off as we think. Modern psychologists think that self-actualization is not about being perfect; it is about accepting ourselves and trying to grow better. Just like gardening, you don’t need the most beautiful flowers. You just need to know which one you like and how you can make it bloom (开花).
42. According to Abraham Maslow’s pyramid, which shows the need for self-actualization
A. Tom has no friends in his new school. He wants someone to talk to.
B. Stephen is very thirsty after running. He wants to drink water.
C. Anna feels scared in the forest. She wants to find a safe place to rest.
D. Maria practices singing every day because she dreams of being a great singer.
43. What does the underlined word “rare” probably mean
A. Not risky. B. Not common. C. Very easy. D. Very important.
44. According to Phil Olley, what is TRUE about self-actualization

C. It means living your life the way you want, not in others’ ways.
D. It needs to follow the path (道路) successful people took before.
45. How does the writer explain self-actualization
A. By showing what psychologists say about it.
B. By saying only rich people can be self-actualized.
C. By giving scientific studies with numbers and data (数据).
D. By telling a story about a famous self-actualized person.
D
Have you ever wondered why you look like your parents It’s all about traits (特征). Traits are the things that make you special—your eye color, your hair type, and even how tall you are. Inherited (遗传) traits are the traits you get from your parents. Most of your traits come from your parents. If your mom has curly hair and your dad has brown eyes, you might inherit those traits too.
These inherited traits are passed down through something called genes (基因). Genes are like secret codes (代码) inside your body. However, even though you get traits from your parents, you won’t look the same as your parents. That’s because of variation (变异). You might have your mom’s curly hair and your dad’s big nose, or your grandpa’s mouth and your aunt’s long fingers.
Sometimes, our environment can also influence our traits. If you eat healthy food and get lots of sunshine, you’ll probably grow strong and be healthy. But if you don’t eat well or if you live in a cold place, it might change how you look.
Plants have traits too! Just like you, plants inherit traits from their parents. They might get their flower color, leaf shape, or seed size from their plant family.
46. Which of the following is an example of inherited traits
A. Your name. B. Your eye color. C. Your handwriting. D. Your favorite color.
47. Why do children look different from their parents
A. Because of variation.
B. Because they don’t eat the same food.
C. Because they inherit more traits from their grandparents.
D. Because the environment completely changes their genes.
48. What is the passage mainly about
A. How genes control every trait.
B. How the environment influences our traits.
C. Why children share similar traits with their parents.
D. How we can change our traits by eating and exercising.

Ne Zha’s story is well-known, but the film Ne Zha 2 filmed it in a new and exciting way.
In the Chinese myth, Ne Zha’s father, Li Jing, punishes him after he causes trouble. However, in the movie, Ne Zha’s parents show him understanding and acceptance (接受).
“Every work reflects the creator’s life experiences,” says the director Jiaozi. One of the reasons for this reinterpretation (重新诠释) of Ne Zha 2 is the huge support Jiaozi has received from his parents during his challenging creative journey.
From a young age, Jiaozi dreamed of becoming a comic (漫画) artist. Though he chose to study medicine in college because of practical considerations, after graduation, he worked at an advertising company while learning animation (动画) and creating animated works in his free time.
However, part-time creation wasn’t enough for him. With his parents’ support, he gave up his job and did his best to make animations at home.
Not long after that, his father died. The only income (收入) in the family came from his mother’s monthly retirement pension (退休金) of just over RMB 1,000. For three years, Jiaozi lived on his mother’s pension while focusing on his work.
Hard work pays off. In 2009, he created the animated short See Through, which received over 10 million views online and won many awards. This short film made him the director of the Ne Zha series by an animation company in the end.
“I got success because of my parents’ support and understanding, so I wanted to put my true feelings and reflections into my work,” says Jiaozi. Ne Zha 2 shows the importance of family love and care.
49. Why did Jiaozi study medicine in college
A. Because he loved medicine very much. B. Because of practical considerations.
C. Because his parents forced him to do so. D. Because he wanted to work in a hospital.
50. What can we infer from the fact that Jiaozi lived on his mother’s pension for three years
A. Jiaozi’s family was very rich.
B. Jiaozi gave up creating animations.
C. Jiaozi faced great financial (经济上的) difficulties.
D. Jiaozi’s mother didn’t support his dream.
51. What does the phrase “hard work pays off” mean in the passage
A. Hard work brings no results. B. Hard work leads to success.
C. Hard work is a waste of time. D. Hard work makes people tired.
52. What is the passage mainly about
A. The story of Ne Zha in Chinese myth.
B. Jiaozi’s creative journey and the inspiration for Ne Zha 2.
C. The making process of animated short See Through.
D. The importance of family love in animation creation.
