In recent years, the tariff (关税) war between the United States and China has become a hot topic that catches the world’s eye. It has brought various big changes and strong influences to both countries, making a huge impact on the global economic situation.
The US was the first to start this tariff war. To protect its own industries, the US government put really high tariffs on many kinds of Chinese goods. Take Chinese clothes, shoes, and electronics for example. They raised the taxes on these products. So, in the US market, these Chinese goods became much more expensive than before. Because of this, Chinese exporters faced a lot of trouble. Many factories that sold most of their goods to the US got far fewer orders. Some factories were so unlucky that they had to let some workers go to save money.
China didn’t just do nothing. China fought back by setting tariffs on some American products. American farmers suffered a lot. China used to buy a great deal of soybeans (大豆) from them. But now, because of the tariffs, it’s tough for American farmers to sell their soybeans to China. Also, American car companies had a hard time in the Chinese market. Their cars became more expensive due to the tariffs, so fewer Chinese people wanted to buy them.
This tariff war didn’t only hurt the US and China. It also had a bad effect on the global economy. Many other countries that traded with the US and China found it more difficult to do business. Everyone in the world hopes that the US and China can talk nicely and find a way to stop this tariff war. After all, a fair and free trade environment is important for the growth of both countries and the whole world.

Cars make our lives much easier. But they can also be a problem, especially fossil fuel (化石燃料) cars. They have become a major cause of air pollution.
To improve the environment, many countries are developing electric vehicles (EVs,电动车). 6 China has created the world’s largest EV market, according to the Wall Street Journal. In 2021, over 30 percent of the EVs sold worldwide were sold in China, more than twice as many as the number sold in the United States. 7 Chinese auto companies, including BYD and BAIC, have been among the top in the world in EV sales.
“Charging (充电) an electric ear is cheaper than filling up a fossil fuel car with gas,” said Wu Hao, who bought an electric car from BAIC this year. 8 It can be hard to find charging stations and the cars can’t go far before needing to be recharged.
Some of these problems are being solved. 9 There are more than 2.6 million charging stations in total.
Developing EVs is one of many efforts China has made to protect the environment. “As China goes, so will the world’s auto industry,” the Wall Street Journal said.

What comes after the success of a Chinese animation (动画片) Toys and other collectible products, of course.
Sales of character-themed products related to the movie Ne Zha 2 have been red-hot. The movie has made over $1 billion in a single market worldwide, which is amazing! Toys, clothes, and collectible cards are flying off the shelves. Cities across China even want to be known as Ne Zha’ s birthplace.
In Xiangtan, Hunan Province, there’s a toy company making 3D plastic food toys based on the movie, and ▲ ! Yang Zhenlin, assistant to the company’s chairman, said the first batch (一批) of Ne Zha-themed “blind box” toys sold out before the Spring Festival. With a blind box, you can’t see which toy figure is inside until you open it, so it’s a fun surprise.
The company has produced toys, based on six main characters in the movie, that sell for 11.5 yuan each. By Monday, they had sold over 450,000 sets of Ne Zha-themed toys through livestreams on Douyin, making 30 million yuan! That’s the top seller in the board game and collectibles category (类别) on the platform.

“The success of Ne Zha 2 shows that Chinese animation can compete with that of the Japanese and American giants,” said Chen.

In Kunshan, a city in Jiangsu Province, “AI police” have made a big difference in making public safety better. They help catch criminals (罪犯) and solve crimes quickly. The Kunshan Public Security Bureau (公安局) has a special team called the “Kunpeng Team” or “AI Team” which uses AI to fight crime (打击犯罪).
Officer Xu Chenbo from the team said that it was hard to find some illegal (非法的) activities and collect evidence (收集证据) in the past. But now, the “AI police” can notice suspicious activities right away, give warnings, and help in many ways.
Kunshan has over 3 million people, including over 1.8 million outsiders. The local police chose 35 officers to start a high-quality innovation (创新) center in May. Using 10 years of data, the “AI Team” created over 220 intelligent models (智能模型) to fight crime, keep the public safe, and improve community services.

US company Motorola created the first cell phone in 1973. The brick-sized phone could only make calls for 30minutes. Today, we have 5G smartphones that look very different and can do a lot more. What will the future phones be like
Most foldable (可折叠的) phones today can only fold the screen up and down or left and right. But in the future, phones will be much more flexible (灵活的). In October 2023, Motorola put out a new phone. People can wear it like a bracelet (手环) and turn it into different shapes. Apple is also working on a way to make foldable screens with fewer creases (折痕).
Not only will the phones become flexible, but they will also be able to fix themselves. Professor Zhenan Bao from Stanford University made an electronic skin that can fix itself with heat and magnets (磁). This skin acts like human skin, stretching (拉伸) without tearing (撕破). If it is used to make phones, the technology could lead to devices that could fix scratches (划痕) by themselves.
People will also power phones in ways that are different from now. For example, using solar energy (太阳能). In 2016, Kyocera Corporation from Japan and French company SunPartner Technologies made a phone with solar panels (电池板) in the screen. It takes three minutes of sunlight to charge for one minute of talk time. But it still needs traditional batteries. In the future, faster and independent solar charging could make solar-powered phones more popular.
