When Chen Ran returned to China in 2009 after graduating from a university in the
UK, the young entrepreneur decided to devote himself to solving a pressing social
challenge rather than pursue a conventional career.
Filled with ambition, he spent six months traveling across the country, and what he
witnessed in public spaces made him keenly aware of China’s enormous unmet demand
for elderly care. With over one fifth of people aged 60 or above, China was seeing a
major population shift, and he set a bold vision: to turn aging from limitation into a life of
dignity, independence and joy.
Chen founded Timeless Care, a company focused on innovative solutions to
improve elderly care. Yet his early days in the industry were filled with hardships. Back
then, China’s elderly care industry was still at an early stage with few supportive policies.
He started with consulting services, studying industry regulations and operational models,
and learning painfully through trial and error. “There were moments when inexperience
led to costly mistakes,” he said. After five years of careful preparation, he finally opened
his first elderly care facility in Tianjin in 2014, focusing on seniors with disabilities,
Alzheimer’s or other forms of mental disease.
Today, his group runs over 1,800 beds in multiple Chinese regions and partners with
local governments to support lonely, low-income seniors with no family care. What
sustained the company, Chen believes, was not rapid expansion, but trust built patiently
over time. “Clients would invite me to their homes for meals and family gatherings,” he
第 2页共 11页
said. “To truly serve them, you have to become the most trusted life partner for each
family.”
Looking ahead, Chen seeks to create a sustainable care model for small cities to ease
ordinary families’ burden. As government policies grow increasingly supportive, he
sincerely hopes that more young people will pay attention to this industry and join in
building a better future for China’s aging population.
24.Why did Chen Ran build up Timeless Care
A. To follow a traditional career path.
B. To satisfy the need for elderly care.
C. To offer more jobs to young people.
D. To apply knowledge learnt in university.
25.What can we learn about Chen’s early career
A. He went through costly mistakes.
B. He built care centers nationwide.
C. He received strong policy support.
D. He achieved great success at first.
26.What mainly led to the company’s progress according to Chen
A. Care for people with disabilities.
B. Quick growth in its business size.
C. Sincere trust built with the families.
D. Close cooperation with governments.
27.Which of the following best describes Chen Ran
A. Careful and reserved.
B. Generous and modest.
C. Honest and humorous.
D. Ambitious and devoted.

At Mainstreet Deli in Paris, Mary Flynn was picking up a sandwich. A QR code
near the checkout invited her to rate her experience. But, to her, the idea of leaving a
customer feedback was unappetizing. “It is way too much,” she said. “I’ve got tired of
it.”
Charles Karian, co-founder of the shop, says feedback and reviews have been part of
a business now. It is a flow that people follow before making decisions. Even though
people are aware that many online reviews are fake, they still rely heavily on ratings. A
marketing survey in 2025 shows that 97% of consumers read reviews before considering
purchases. “Whether you are buying a chicken wrap or seeing a dentist,” Charles says,
“what ends up happening is ‘OK, let’s read some reviews.’ ”
第 3页共 11页
Experts have identified a psychological mechanism that drives the increasing
demand for feedback. Reviews, in reality, function as a form of social proof, influencing
people’s decisions and behaviors. This tendency is often seen in herd mentality, where
individuals seek to fit in with the majority to avoid poor decisions.
But the constant demand for reviews could bring about unfavourable consequences,
experts warn. Many are less enthusiastic about being asked to fill out business surveys.
What started as an innovative way to help consumers has increasingly become an
unwelcome burden. Besides, online reviews rarely paint the full picture because
customers are not likely to leave reviews unless they have had a particularly positive or
particularly negative experience.
To reduce overdependence on constant feedback, businesses have to toe a fine line.
Instead of asking for a review after every purchase, try after every third one or just for
big-ticket items. If a customer is especially satisfied, that is a good time to ask for a
review, too. Most people actually don’t mind taking surveys if you ask the questions that
you are willing to deal with. “Deep down, everybody wants to be heard,” Charles says.
28.What contributes to the increasing demand for feedback
A. Customers’ limited shopping time.
B. People’s desire to follow the crowd.
C. Businesses’ need to lower their costs.
D. Experts’ suggestion on wise decisions.
29.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Related limitations.
B. Practical solutions.
C. Personal experience.
D. Research background.
30.What does the underlined phrase “toe a fine line” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Break the ice.
B. Bridge a gap.
C. Strike a balance.
D. Reach the goal.
31.What is Charles’s attitude to customers’ feedback
A. Unclear.
B. Approving.
C. Doubtful.
D. Dismissive.

Horses use their larynx (喉) to make two sounds simultaneously, so they are
effectively singing and whistling at the same time.
第 4页共 11页
It has long been known that a horse’s whinny contains both a low-frequency sound,
around 200 hertz, and a high-frequency sound, above 1,000 hertz. The low-frequency
component is easily explained by vibrations in the horse laryngeal vocal folds (声带),
similar to human speech or singing. But the high-frequency sound is unusual for such a
large animal, and how it is produced has been a mystery.
“Although humans have been co-existing and co-evolving with horses for 4,000
years, we still understand their communication imperfectly,” says Thompson Fitch at the
University of Vienna, Austria.
To solve the puzzle, Fitch and his colleagues first performed a range of tests, scans
and experiments on horse larynges obtained from a horse meat supplier. “We blew air
through them and initially we only got the low component,” says Fitch. “But with some
playing around, we were able to obtain the high-frequency component as well.” This
showed that both components are produced by the larynx itself, unlike human whistling,
which is performed with the lips.
For further proof of the whistling mechanism, the researchers blew air and helium,
two different gases, through the larynges. By comparing these gases, the researchers
could test whether the high-frequency sound came from whistling or from tissue
vibrations.
“The low-frequency component is produced by vocal fold vibrations, just like
human singing or a cow mooing, and it didn’t shift when we changed between gases,”
says Fitch. “But the high-frequency component did significantly shift to be higher in
helium, just as predicted for whistles.” Mice and rats can also produce laryngeal whistles,
but in their case it is at a frequency too high for humans to hear.
Fitch and his colleagues assume that the whistle may make the whinny more
noticeable and may help the sound carry further, but these guesses haven’t yet been tested.
32.What does a horse use to make low-frequency sounds
A. Lips.
B. Tongue.
C. Muscles.
D. Vocal folds.
33.How did Fitch’s team perform the study
A. By studying horse tissue vibrations.
B. By identifying functions of horse lips.
C. By comparing components of two gases.
D. By blowing gases through horse larynges.
34.What did Fitch’s study finally test
A. The whistling mechanism of horses.
B. The functions of horse whistling.

C. The high-frequency sound of horses.
D. The existence of laryngeal whistle.

We all know that vacations are good for the soul, but if you are looking to recharge
without the headache of airports and lengthy road trips, maybe it is time to embrace the
concept of a staycation. 36.
Staycation makes for the perfect getaway because it avoids the stress of long-
distance travel. 37 All you need is a vacation mindset, a bit of creativity to play tourist in
your own neighborhood, and a clear idea on what you actually want to do.
The beauty of staycation is that you have the absolute freedom to do whatever you
want, however you want. Want to sleep the entire time and do absolutely nothing Go for
it. Feel ambitious and want to accomplish some of your long-held wishes 38 Whatever
your preference, decide what you want to get out of the staycation.
And if you are planning to pack your staycation with activities, have structure. It is
just as important to figure out what you want to do, see and eat. Make an effort to check
out the nearby restaurants, shops and hidden treasures you have probably never given a
second glance. 39 Turn to your local tourist board for the latest happenings, free events
and guided tours. If you want your staycation to count, explore like you have never set
foot in the place before.
40 Keep in mind that filling every single moment with activities won’t do you any
good. Besides, don’t worry about your social media feed. Just focus on your own inner
peace. It is your staycation, so the only rules are yours, not meant to impress anyone else.
A. That is cool, too.
B. It also saves you a lot of trouble.

The newest collection of human scientific research remains fascinating and
continues to show us new mysteries waiting to be explored. Here are two of National
Geographic’s top 56 (pick) for 2023’s most impressive breakthroughs.
A brain decoder translates human thoughts, 57 (provide) hope for those who have
lost speech. Researchers from University of Texas at Austin reported revolutionary work
with a new AI system—translating a person’s brain activity into 58 continuous stream of
text in the lab. It is not a true “mind reading” device. Instead, the brain decoding system
59 (essential) creates a dictionary of brain activity patterns based on how an individual
responds to certain words or images 60 then uses that dictionary to guess what the person
is thinking about. This tech is currently 61 its early days, yet it has already raised
questions about mental privacy and ethics in non-voluntary situations. For the families of
people who have trouble communicating, however, the work provides new hope.
Ancient whale might be the largest animal ever. The blue whale may no longer be
the largest animal in history. An ancient whale appropriately 62 (name) Perucetus
colossus could take that title. A new 63 (analyse) of fossil bones from the ancient whale
that 64 (live) in the waters along the coast of Peru more than 37 million years ago
suggests that the animal may have weighed more than 300 tons and measured around 60
feet. If it was truly as heavy as scientists suspect, then it would have been the largest
known animal to have ever lived. Blue whales, 65 still longer at around 100 feet, only
weigh around 200 tons.

I stood before the mirror, adjusting my bow tie for a third time. Tonight was the
coming-of-age ceremony, a moment I had awaited for months.
As I walked into the school auditorium, the sight in front of me took my breath away.
The entire hall was strung up with bright fairy lights, the stage decorated with a huge sign
that read “Embrace Adulthood, Chase Dreams!”. My classmates were already there, their
faces glowing with happiness. Some posed for photos with teachers and parents, while
others were chatting excitedly. It was a mix of joy and anticipation for the future.
As the ceremony began, we sang our school song together and watched video clips
of sweet memories. Then Mr. Johnson, our principal, stepped onto the stage, smiled
warmly, and began to deliver his speech. He told us that this ceremony was not just a
celebration, but also a reminder of independence and responsibility. “Adulthood is not
just about getting older,” he said.
To our great surprise, he then declared a special session—Dream Sharing. Instead of
calling names one by one, he would pick students at random and invite them to share
their dreams and future plans on the stage.
The whole hall bubbled with whispers and excitement as we waited for our names to be
called. Then Mr. Johnson called out, “Jackie!”
“I will design apps to detect disease and this is my promise as an adult!” Jackie said,
his voice clear and loud. Next was Bradley, who dreamed of becoming a pilot. Then
Alice shared her plan of using AI to monitor ocean pollution and protect marine life.
Their words rang in my ears. Everyone seemed to have great and shining dreams. I sat
quietly, replaying my own dream in my mind, but it felt so ordinary that I dared not speak
it out.

第二节(满分 25分:读后续写)
Just as I was lost in thought, my name was called. My heart pounded wildly.
Unlike my classmates who had grand plans, my dream seemed too simple to share. I
stood for a while, unsure whether to voice it out. Then I met Mr. Johnson’s gaze—his
gentle smile cheered me on, and I said, “I want to be a community worker.” With my
heart still pounding, I shared my hope to help people with daily issues, passing on
kindness and making a difference in their lives. Having finished my words, I lowered my
head, worried that my dream would pale in comparison to theirs.
Applause broke out and Mr. Johnson smiled proudly at me. “That’s a noble
dream,” he nodded gently. “To light up one’s path is the greatest gift an adult can give.”
His words instantly melted my anxiety away. I glanced at my classmates and was met
with nods and smiles, rather than the awkward silence I had feared. At that moment, I
realized that growing up meant having the courage to pursue our dreams, no matter how
simple they might be. With passion and courage in my heart, my journey to take
responsibilities began.
