Long before we had fridges, people in ancient China made a smart box to keep food cool in summer. It was called an “ice container (冰鉴)”. This invention shows us how clever ancient Chinese people were.
The box was usually made of two parts: a large outside box and a small inside pot. In winter, people collected ice from rivers and stored it underground. When summer came, they put the ice between the outside box and the inside pot. Then, they placed food or drinks inside the pot. The ice around it kept everything cool. The box had a small hole at the bottom, so the water from the melting (融化的) ice could run out.
The box was not only useful but also beautiful. Craftsmen (工匠) often carved (雕刻) beautiful pictures of nature on the outside. This shows that people in ancient China liked to make everyday things look nice. Families used the box during meals or when friends visited, which made hot days more enjoyable.
More than just a box, the ice container teaches us about traditional Chinese ideas. It shows how people made good use of what nature gave them—like using the winter ice to beat the summer heat. Its simple and clever design follows the ancient idea of living in harmony (和谐) with nature. Today, some of these old boxes are kept in museums. They remind us of a time when people lived at a slower pace (节奏) and thought of smart, good ways to live with the world around them.

When people think of sports with poles (杆), skiing may be the first idea. But have you heard of Nordic (北欧) Walking This excellent exercise, though not very well-known, started in Finland. It was first used as summer training for cross-country skiers. Now, it is becoming more and more popular around the world as a simple and effective way for people of all ages to stay healthy.
What makes Nordic Walking different from ordinary (普通的) walking is the use of special poles. Your arms and poles work together with your legs. As you walk, you place the poles behind you and push off the ground with each step. This simple action changes a normal walk into a full-body workout. It uses the muscles (肌肉) in your arms, shoulders, chest (胸部), and back, which do not work hard during ordinary walking.
The health benefits of Nordic Walking are great. Because it uses the upper body, it burns more calories (卡路里) and makes your heart work harder than ordinary walking. This makes it very good for heart health. It is also a low-impact activity, which means it doesn’t put much pressure on the knees and joints (关节). Therefore, it is a good choice for those who find running hard. Also, using the poles helps to improve balance and posture (姿势), and can also help reduce stress.
Starting Nordic Walking is easy. The basic method (方法) is not difficult to learn. You only need a pair of walking poles and comfortable shoes. You can do it in a park, on a beach, or in your local area. It is a wonderful chance to go outside, enjoy fresh air, and improve your health in a fun and relaxing way. Why not give it a try
13.What was Nordic Walking first used to do
A.To train skiers in summer. B.To make walking more enjoyable.
C.To interest more people to ski. D.To help people work hard.
14.What is the main function (功能) of the poles in Nordic Walking
A.To help walkers go faster on snowy roads.
B.To protect walkers from dangerous animals.
C.To turn the walking into a full-body exercise.
D.To make walkers look more professional (专业的).
15.What does the underlined word “low-impact” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Not very helpful. B.Easy on the body.
C.Hard to control. D.Not needing money.

The Power of Hope
Have you noticed the mornings are slowly getting lighter Being hopeful that spring is around the corner and warmer, brighter days are ahead is a powerful feeling. This is because hope gives us the strength to be positive (积极乐观的), even when things don’t go our way.
Hope is a positive feeling that things will get better. It’s more than just wishful thinking; hope means taking action and believing you have the power to achieve your goals (目标). “When I’m hopeful, it makes me see the brightness in myself,” says Jonah, aged eight, “It’s good to be hopeful because it gives you a chance to be happy about things.” Charles Snyder, a psychologist (an expert in how we think), studied hopeful thinking and said it has three main parts: having a goal, thinking up different ways to achieve it and believing in yourself even when things go wrong.
Snyder called hope a “rainbow of the mind,” because it “lifts our spirits and makes us think of what is possible.” Being hopeful about something, like trying out a new sport or hobby, takes courage because you’re taking a step into the unknown. This helps you work out what’s important to you, as well as making you more confident. Studies show that being hopeful also helps you learn better at school, build strong friendships and feel less stressed.
Hope is a skill you can learn. Hope expert David Feldman suggests starting by working towards a goal that’s important to you, then thinking up different ways to achieve it. So if you hope to be a chef one day, for example, aim to learn one new recipe a week. Staying focused on your goal takes energy, so eat healthily and get plenty of sleep. If you start to feel hopeless, get inspired by people who have already succeeded or tell someone who supports you so they can help you improve. Finally, make use of your imagination and picture yourself achieving your goal. Picturing success in the future is hope in action.
