过去进行时
1. 过去进行时的构成:was/were+动词-ing
2. 动词-ing形式的变化规则
Presentation
一般情况直接加-ing look → looking、work → working
以不发音的字母 e 结尾:去 e 加 -ing take → taking、write → writing
以“辅音字母+元音字母+辅音字母”结尾的重读闭音节动词如果末尾只有一个辅音字母,要双写这个辅音字母,再加-ing shop → shopping、sit → sitting、plan → planning
以 ie 结尾的动词:变 ie 为 y 加-ing lie → lying、tie → tying、die → dying
注意:易错特殊情况(必记)
(1)单音节动词以 w、x、y 结尾(辅 + 元 + 辅):不双写,直接加-ing
draw → drawing、fix → fixing
(2)非重读闭音节(辅 + 元 + 辅):不双写,直接加 -ing
open → opening
3. 句式结构
(1)肯定句:主语 + was/were +动词-ing 形式+其他.
I was reading a book at 8:00 last night. 昨晚八点我正在看书。
(2)否定句:主语+ was/were + not +动词 -ing 形式+其他.
She wasn’t watching TV just now. 她刚才没在看电视。

(3)一般疑问句及答语:Was/Were + 主语+动词 -ing 形式+其他
肯定回答:Yes,主语+was/were.
否定回答:No,主语+was/were not.
— Was he cooking when you came in 你进来的时候他在做饭吗?
— Yes, he was. / No, he wasn’t. 是的,他在。/ 不,他没有。
(4)特殊疑问句:特殊疑问句 + was/were +主语+doing +其他
回答需具体说明,不能用 Yes/No。
—What were you doing at that time 你那时在做什么?
—I was reading. 我在看书。

4. 过去进行时的用法
(1)表示过去某一时刻正在发生的动作,或过去某一个阶段内一直在进行的动作,常用的时间状语有:at this/that time +过去时间、at ... o’clock + 过去时间、from ... to ... +过去时间、those days(那些日子)、just now(刚才;刚刚)
He was playing the piano at 5:00 yesterday afternoon. 昨天下午五点他正在弹钢琴。
They were working on the farm all day yesterday. 昨天一整天他们都在农场干活。
(2)表示一个过去的动作正在进行时,另一个过去的动作发生了,常与when, while引导的时间状语从句连用。
I was watching TV when my father came back. 我正在看电视,这时爸爸回来了。
While he was waiting for the bus, he read a book. 他在等公交车的时候看了一本书。

when与while引导的时间状语从句
一、概述
when和while都可意为“当……时”,用来引导时间状语从句,表示主句动作发生的背景。从句可位于主句之前或之后,当位于主句之前时,与主句要用逗号分开。
延续性动词和非延续性动词:
延续性动词指动作可以延续一段时间,而不是瞬间结束。work、study、drink、eat等。
非延续性动词指动作极为短暂,瞬间结束。start、begin、hit、jump、knock等。
二、when 引导的时间状语从句
1. 表示主句动作发生的特定时间,既可指时间点,也可指时间段。
I was doing my homework when he came in. 他进来的时候,我正在写作业。

2. when 引导的时间状语从句中的谓语动词可用延续性动词,也可用非延续性动词。从句的动作可与主句的动作同时发生,也可在主句动作之前或之后发生。
When the bus stopped, we got off quickly. 公交车停下时,我们迅速下了车。
He often listened to music when he worked. 他工作时经常听音乐。
3. 当主句为将来时或表示将来的意义时,从句要用一般现在时表示将来,即遵循“主将从现”的原则。
I will call you when I arrive in Beijing. 我到北京后会给你打电话。
We will go camping when the weather is fine tomorrow.
明天天气好的话,我们就去露营。
When he comes, please let me know. 他来的时候请告诉我一声。

三、while 引导的时间状语从句
1. while引导时间状语从句时,从句的谓语动词必须为延续性动词,且常用进行时。
Please be quiet while I am teaching. 我在讲课的时候请安静。
2. 强调主句动作发生时,从句动作正在进行,此时,从句用进行时。
While she was doing her homework, the light went out. 她正在写作业的时候,灯灭了。
While we were walking home, it started to rain. 我们正走在回家路上时,天开始下雨了。
3. 强调主从句动作同时进行时,主从句通常都用进行时。
I was reading while my mother was cooking. 我在看书,妈妈在做饭。
They were singing while we were dancing. 他们在唱歌,我们在跳舞。
