When I was in New York, I was a member of a volunteer fire company.
I still remember my first fire which gave me a 11 lesson. I was the second volunteer to arrive here. The volunteer leader was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the pouring rain without her shoes on, while her 12 was on fire.
The other volunteer was asked to go inside the broken house and save the homeowner’s dog. The leader then waved me over. He said, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and 13 this woman a pair of shoes.” To be honest, it was not exactly what I was hoping for, but I still went upstairs, past the real firefighters who were pretty close to 14 the fire at this point, into the bedroom to find a pair of shoes.
Then I carried the shoes downstairs and met the other volunteer 15 the lovely dog. We took our “treasures” outside to the homeowner. Not 16 , he received much more attention than me because he had just saved the little dog’s life.
A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner 17 us for saving her home. The act of 18 she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.
Here, I would offer this reminder: don’t wait. Don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference to somebody’s life. If you have 19 to give, give it now. Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody’s life, 20 every day offers us a chance to influence one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.
