Have you ever looked at a cat s face and wondered what it is thinking A team of scientists from the University of California might have some answers. In a fascinating new study, researchers discovered that cats use 276 different facial expressions to show their feelings—far more than we have ever imagined!
①________
The scientists visited a local cat cafe in Los Angeles for over several months to observe (观察) 53 cats. They recorded 194 minutes of videos, carefully watching how the cats communicate with each other. Using a special system called FACS (Facial Action Coding System), which is normally used to study human expressions, they identified 26 unique facial movements in cats. These movements—like licking (舔) their nose, opening their mouth, or widening their pupils (the black part of their eyes)—combine in different ways to create all those expressions. They also found cats use 26 of these facial movements in total, which can be mixed to express how they are feeling. Dogs use 27 facial movements and humans use a total of 44.
②________
Out of the expressions they recorded, 45% were friendly and 37% were angry. “A friendly cat moves its ears and whiskers forward while closing its eyes slowly—almost like a smile! However, an angry cat often flattens its ears to its head, makes its pupils smaller and licks its lips,” said the team.
③________
Although the researchers aren t sure what the cats were trying to communicate with each other using their faces, they plan to study cats in other places to improve their understanding. They also hope that the research could help animal shelters (收容所) improve the way they look after the cats. Some pet owners even suggest the researchers develop an app that scans a cat s face to explain its mood—like a “cat translator”.
Next time your cat stares at you, pay attention—it might be “talking” with its face!

c. How Did They Study Cats d. Future Research on Cat Communication.
A. ①-a ②-b ③-d B. ①-b ②-c ③-a C. ①-c ②-b ③-d
66.What might the scientists do next
A. Keep on studying to know more about cats.
B. Find out why the cats try to communicate with each other.
C. Build an animal shelter to look after cats.
67.What would be the best structure of the passage

The Story of Ai Ye and Mangtuan Paper
In a village of Yunnan, the clear river runs through Mangtuan. The village was home to an ancient paper-making tradition. Ai Ye, a local woman, grew up watching elders soak (浸泡) and wash mulberry bark (桑树皮) in the river. As a child, she followed their actions, turning it into a game. She fell in love with the paper-making slowly.
Different from others who left for big cities for work, Ai stayed here. “Paper-making calms my mind, so I want to stay here,” she said.
Mangtuan, a traditional village of Dai, has been known for its handmade paper for centuries. Over 60 families here make paper all year round. The method, passed down through ages, has stayed the same. It includes soaking, steaming (蒸), and drying mulberry bark. Each piece of paper needs three days to make.
When Ai was 13, she learned about Cai Lun, the inventor of paper-making in ancient China. She realized her village s skills in modern city was connected with this history. After junior high school, Ai returned to the village and spent nearly 20 years learning the skills.
The paper was used to copy Buddhist scriptures (佛经) long ago. The traditional paper-making skill was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非遗) in 2006. That same year, Ai started to create something new. She added flowers and leaves to the paper. Tourists and tea traders loved the new one. Now, more and more people are interested in Mangtuan paper.
In 2014, Ai started a company and encouraged other villagers to join. Together, they made notebooks, bags and lanterns from the paper. These products reached markets in Myanmar and Thailand. Last year, the village made over 3.9 million pieces of paper.
Ai believes paper has feelings. “Treat it well, and it won t disappoint you,” she says. Through her efforts, Mangtuan s tradition lives on, mixing ancient wisdom with modern creativity.

From (1) to work stress, more Chinese people are now using AI tools like DeepSeek to talk about their problems. They share feelings with the chatbot (聊天机器人) and get warm (2) . This is called “AI therapy (疗愈)”, which is becoming popular online. But can robots really replace human therapists
Around the world, 45 (3) of people who needed mental health care in 2024 did not get it because it was too (4) or there weren t enough doctors, according to Huntington Psychological Services. Daniel Lowd, an associate professor (副教授) at the University of Oregon, (5) AI could help fill this gap. “If people can find some support and ideas by talking to ChatGPT or chatbot Claude, then I think that s wonderful,” Lowd told Newsweek. Li Yong, a doctor at the Jiangsu Province Hospital, agreed with Lowd, saying that AI meets people s needs (6) emotional support to a point.
However, AI has (7) limits. Human therapists understand feelings deeply through face-to-face talks and create personalized treatment plans—something robots can t fully copy. Another problem is safety. AI might act like a therapist without proper training (8) rules. It can t be as responsible as human therapists.
Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control. For example, Wysa, an AI mental health app, follows strict medical standards in the UK. As AI becomes part of daily life, finding a balance between its benefits and risks (9) important. While AI offers quick help, human connection (10) irreplaceable for serious emotional needs.

Improve Learning Efficiency
Our school did a survey about what most improves our learning efficiency. Here are the results.
According to the survey, 43% of the students consider correct learning methods most important, 32% believe that good learning habits matter a lot, and 25% think active learning attitudes are key.
I find that the correct learning method is the most effective. First, make a clear study plan and break tasks into small parts. This helps us focus on what to do step by step. Second, learn to solve problems by ourselves before asking for help. Last but not least, review regularly to check our progress.
By following these suggestions, we can study more efficiently at home.
