Dear Joan,
I’m writing to talk about a book I shared in a recent school reading event. The book is “Red Star Over
China” which features Mao Zedong and other great leaders. It vividly describes Mao Zedong’s leadership
in the difficult revolutionary journey. It shows his profound insights, strong determination and unique
personal qualities. Reading this book allows us to understand how he led the Chinese people to strive for
national independence and people’s liberation. It is an inspiring account that reveals the remarkable
wisdom and great sacrifice in that extraordinary era.
Attending the English reading event was a delightful experience. It broadened my horizons, deepened
my love for books, and offered a chance to share ideas with fellow readers.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分 25分)
Paragraph 1: When we got nearer to the senior citizen center, one of the passengers asked the driver
to wait. He stepped down quickly, looking back at the rest of us with some uncertainty while rushing to
the center, where he saw couples of old people gathered. After what seemed a short conversation with
them, he rushed inside, leaving our eyes fixed at the door and heart racing wildly. Shortly, he appeared in
our sight, with Charlie running beside. The moment they came to us, the passenger shouted, “I can’t
believe that! What a man!” He told us what he heard about Charlie and what he saw — He had been busy
taking care of an old dying man whose family were not available and Charlie couldn’t even find any time
to bring them flowers as usual!
Paragraph 2: Knowing Charlie’s story, all the passengers on the bus burst into a thunder of applause.
Charlie responded shyly, “Thanks for your care and concern! But I do feel a sense of satisfaction while
doing something for the old people here, especially those unable to have their families around.” On
hearing that, all of us saw through all the days with and without Charlie on the bus. The conversations, the
guesses, the whistles, and the concerns flooded in our memory. Tears swam in our eyes, realizing we, too,
could do something like Charlie, trivial but vital, and that every flower we bring can make a different day
for those in need.

I’ve been working from home for almost ten years now. I chose to work in this way soon after the
birth of my oldest daughter, because I wanted more time with children. At first, my company only allowed
me to work from home three days a week. However, I can work at home almost all the time nowadays,
and only go into the office for important meetings. Home working has been great for me. The best thing is
that I feel much less stressed. It’s also easier to focus on what I’m doing. And not having to travel to and
from the office saves me both money and time. However, home working isn’t suitable for everybody. I’m
personally very independent, but sometimes people would feel pretty lonely without co-workers.
Teamwork and meetings can also be pretty challenging despite all the modern technology we have! For
me, the main problem is finding a balance between work and my personal life. When your office is in your
house, it’s very easy to find yourself working all the time. I have to be very strict with myself and close
my office door at the end of the day. Still, I wouldn’t change it for the world!

While accidents and incidents do happen, in this day and age, roller coasters (过山车) are
generally considered safe. This wasn’t always the case: Early roller coasters and other rides
were uncomfortable at best, and dangerous at worst. One pioneer to the roller coaster were the
Ice Slides — hills constructed of wood and ice — found in Russia in the 16th century. After an
exhausting climb up a set of stairs, riders would dash down the slope (坡) on a block of ice with
a pile of straw as the seat. Fun! In the early 1800s, a wheeled version made its way to France,
making it more similar to modern roller coasters. Except that the wheels would often come off
and the cars wouldn’t stop at the bottom of the hill. Less fun!
Coasters only got more dangerous in the next century. Consider the infamous Coney Island
Rough Riders roller coaster, which killed seven people in a five-year span from 1910 to 1915
before it was shut down. The coaster was an honor to Theodore Roosevelt and his “Rough
Riders,” the soldiers who fought in the Spanish-American War. But the coaster was almost as
dangerous as Battle of San Juan Hill: According to PBS, in one accident, the speeding coaster
threw off 16 people, killing four. In another accident, the coaster jumped the track and caused
three deaths. One woman survived the dangerous hanging from a rail with one hand, holding her
child with the other hand.
Another great place to get injured was New Jersey’s Action Park, which did its damage
from 1978 to 1996 before closing. How bad was Action Park A few years ago, my New
Jersey-born wife got an email that said “You know you’re from New Jersey when ... you’ve
been seriously injured at Action Park.”
24. How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By making a contrast. B. By asking a question.
C. By giving a definition. D. By offering a suggestion.
25. What was the first roller coaster made of
A. Wood and ice. B. Metal wheels.
C. Grass and stone. D. Soldiers’ weapons.
26. What was Coney Island Rough Riders built for
A. Testing the challenge of the ride.
B. Remembering a historical event.
C. Celebrating a woman’s survival.
D. Recording a bloody Spanish battle.
27. What is the tone of the author’s description
A. Uncertain. B. Cautious. C. Angry. D. Humorous.

Recently, a young man in his 20s from Beijing has chosen to serve as a “shared son” for
the parents of strangers. Like many of his peers, he has signed a mutual (相互的) assistance
agreement. It is designed to help each other ’s parents when they are out and about by
themselves. This type of agreement has now become a social media trend.
The young are inspired by concerns that their parents may encounter different challenges
during their outings. In the digital age, tasks that young people can complete in minutes can
leave some middle-aged and old people awkward around, like scanning QR codes, ordering
meals online, booking tickets for scenic spots or entering railway stations.
Some people have voiced opposition to the idea of performing good deeds based on signed
agreements. Lending seniors a helping hand is a traditional virtue in China. Popular opinion
holds that everyone has a responsibility to step up to the plate when they see an elderly person
in need. While help from strangers based on online agreements can be beneficial, we must
address the growing anxiety causing these agreements against the situation of a rapidly aging
population.
As of late 2023, the population of those aged 60 and above in China had reached 297
million. It will account for 21.1 percent of the total population. The mutual assistance
agreement is very helpful in this regard. It allows seniors to better adapt to the pace of modern
life and enjoy the conveniences modern technologies bring. They can also feel the warmth and
care from young people and society at large.
The agreement is signed on a voluntary basis and each individual has their specific
responsibilities. The young people offering help gain an enhanced sense of responsibility and a
strong motivation to see tasks all the way through. For the seniors’ children, knowing their
parents are surrounded by helpful young people brings relief and comfort.
28. What has the digital age brought to the old
A. Different entertainment choices. B. Additional indoor opportunities.
C. Varied activities in the open air. D. Some inconveniences in daily life.
29. Why do some people go against the “shared son” practice
A. It can limit people’s choices. B. It can increase seniors’ burdens.
C. It can weaken traditional values. D. It can cause family conflicts.

From improving focus to strengthening cognitive (认知的 ) pathways, handwriting offers
neurological (神经学上) benefits that modern technology can’t bring.
Think back to the last time you wrote down a quick note or made a grocery list. Chances are that
it wasn’t with pen and paper. Over the past decade, keyboards and screens have quietly replaced
handwriting in our daily routines, from classrooms to office meetings. Some schools around the
world have even stopped teaching cursive (连笔) altogether.
Yet, research shows that putting pen to paper offers cognitive benefits that digital tools can’t
produce. “Statistically most studies on the relationship between handwriting and memory, including
ones conducted in Japan, Norway and the United States, show that people are better at remembering
things that they have written down, manually than on a computer,” says Naomi Susan Baron,
professor of linguistics at American University in Washington D.C. From improved memory storage
to enhanced learning outcomes, here’s how maintaining the art of handwriting can significantly
impact how we absorb and keep information.
The benefits of writing by hand can partly be attributed to the engagement of different senses in
the writing process.
“Holding a pen with our fingers, pressing it on a surface, and moving our hands to create letters
and words is a complex skill that requires a lot of our attention,” says Mellissa Prunty, who has
researched the relationship between handwriting and learning. “This deeper level of processing,
which involves mapping sounds to letter formations, has been shown to support reading and spelling
in children,” Prunty says.
Adults also benefit from the labor-intensive nature of handwriting. A study involving 42 adults
learning Arabic found that participants who learned letters by writing them down by hand were
quicker to recognize them, had an easier time naming them, and were better at sounding the newly
learned letters out compared with people learning by typing or by just looking at them.
32. What does Paragraph 2 mainly focus on about handwriting
A. Its method of usage. B. Its connection to life.
C. Its present situation. D. Its previous advantages.
33. What does the underlined phrase “be attributed to” mean in paragraph 4
A. Figure out. B. Get into. C. Refer to. D. Result from.
34. What does the author intend to explain in Paragraph 5
A. How our brain processes information.
B. Why handwriting helps us learn better.
C. How we can improve reading and spelling.
D. Why sounds and letter formations are related.

A. Handwriting still matters a lot in the digital age.
B. We can do without handwriting in the near future.

Climbers have left behind an estimated fifty 56 (ton) of waste on Mt Everest, the world’s
highest mountain. The government of Nepal has tried many different ways of 57 (get)
the visitors to clean up after themselves, including ruling that climbers have to collect and carry out
18 pounds of garbage every time they visit or pay a huge fine. Now, a new innovative way to remove
the trash was tested, using unmanned “heavy lifter” drones (无人机) 58 (carry) it out by air.
Prior to the drones taking the garbage away 59 the mountain was a tough task
usually done by Sherpas, the local people living in the area. But the work is difficult 60
dangerous. In 2014, an avalanche (雪崩) covered 16 Sherpa guides in the icefall. Last year,
three guides preparing routes 61 (bury) under ice.
In April, 2024, Chinese drone maker DIJ conducted the first trial on Mt Everest. The test
showed that the DJI FlyCart 30, 62 long-distance heavy lifter drone, could airlift 234 kilograms
per hour, and bring it to the base camp.
“After a 63 (success) test in April, we plan to use drones commercially in the Everest
region,” said Jagat Bhusal, chief administration officer 64 hosts Everest. In the fall, the drones
will be employed to clean up Ama Dablam, south of Everest. Then in the spring of 2025, the work
will begin.
While some local jobs will be lost, improving safety is the first goal. Cleaning up Everest is
getting much safer and more efficient than before. 65 (certain), that’s a cause to celebrate.

第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One of the passengers was a small grey man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens
every morning. He walked with a sad look on his face when he, with some difficulty, boarded the bus
and sat down alone behind the driver. No one ever paid very much attention to him.
Then one July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled short-sightedly down
through the bus before he sat down. The driver nodded guardedly. The rest of us were silent.
The next day, the old man boarded the bus energetically, smiled and said in a loud voice: “And a
very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good morning,” in
reply.
The following weeks we noticed our friend was now dressed in a nice old suit and a wide
out-of-date tie. The thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and
we gradually began to nod and talk to each other.
One morning he had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. They were already fading a little
because of the heat. The driver turned around smilingly and asked: “Have you got yourself a
girlfriend, Charlie ” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he shook his head
shyly and said no.
The other passengers whispered but believed he did it for a good purpose. Charlie bowed and
waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat.
Every morning after that, Charlie always brought a flower. Some of the regular passengers
began bringing him flowers for his bunch, gently nudged him and said shyly: “Here.” Everyone
smiled. The men started to joke about it, talk to each other, and share the newspaper.
The summer went by, and autumn was closing in, when one morning Charlie wasn’t waiting at
his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he
was sick or — hopefully — on holiday somewhere.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
When we got nearer to the senior citizen center, one of the passengers asked the driver to wait.
Paragraph 2:
Knowing Charlie’s story, all the passengers on the bus burst into a thunder of applause.

While accidents and incidents do happen, in this day and age, roller coasters (过山车) are generally considered safe. This wasn’t always the case: Early roller coasters and other rides
were uncomfortable at best, and dangerous at worst. One pioneer to the roller coaster were the
Ice Slides — hills constructed of wood and ice — found in Russia in the 16th century. After an exhausting climb up a set of stairs, riders would dash down the slope (坡) on a block of ice with
a pile of straw as the seat. Fun! In the early 1800s, a wheeled version made its way to France, making it more similar to modern roller coasters. Except that the wheels would often come off
and the cars wouldn’t stop at the bottom of the hill. Less fun!
Coasters only got more dangerous in the next century. Consider the infamous Coney Island Rough Riders roller coaster, which killed seven people in a five-year span from 1910 to 1915
before it was shut down. The coaster was an honor to Theodore Roosevelt and his “Rough
Riders,” the soldiers who fought in the Spanish-American War. But the coaster was almost as dangerous as Battle of San Juan Hill: According to PBS, in one accident, the speeding coaster
threw off 16 people, killing four.

A. Uncertain. B. Cautious. C. Angry. D. Humorous.

Recently, a young man in his 20s from Beijing has chosen to serve as a “shared son” for
the parents of strangers. Like many of his peers, he has signed a mutual (相互的) assistance agreement. It is designed to help each other’s parents when they are out and about by
Some people have voiced opposition to the idea of performing good deeds based on signed agreements.
The agreement is signed on a voluntary basis and each individual has their specific responsibilities. The young people offering help gain an enhanced sense of responsibility and a strong motivation to see tasks all the way through.
30. What does the author think of this type of agreement
A. Strange and useless. B. Creative and demanding.
C. Practical and positive. D. Challenging and ineffective.
31. What might be the best title of the passage

Climbers have left behind an estimated fifty 56 (ton) of waste on Mt Everest, the world’s highest mountain. The government of Nepal has tried many different ways of 57 (get)

One of the passengers was a small grey man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens every morning. He walked with a sad look on his face when he, with some difficulty, boarded the bus and sat down alone behind the driver. No one ever paid very much attention to him.
Then one July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled short-sightedly down through the bus before he sat down. The driver nodded guardedly. The rest of us were silent.
The next day, the old man boarded the bus energetically, smiled and said in a loud voice: “And a very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good morning,” in reply.
The following weeks we noticed our friend was now dressed in a nice old suit and a wide out-of-date tie. The thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other.
One morning he had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. They were already fading a little because of the heat. The driver turned around smilingly and asked: “Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie ” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he shook his head shyly and said no.
The other passengers whispered but believed he did it for a good purpose. Charlie bowed and waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat.
Every morning after that, Charlie always brought a flower. Some of the regular passengers began bringing him flowers for his bunch, gently nudged him and said shyly: “Here.” Everyone smiled. The men started to joke about it, talk to each other, and share the newspaper.
The summer went by, and autumn was closing in, when one morning Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or — hopefully — on holiday somewhere.
