Saturn①: What Put the Rings on It
Adapted from National Geographic 202303
Without its rings, Saturn looks really boring. Its plain face lacks the energy of Jupiter②'s watercolored bands③, the spicy blue of Neptune④, the suffocating (令人窒息的) murk (昏暗) of Venus⑤. Even rusty⑥ Mars looks more interesting.
Thankfully, at some point in the past 4.5 billion years, the cosmos⑦ gave Earth's neighborhood an : It put a big, bright, icy ring system around Saturn. But scientists don't agree on when Saturn's rings formed or how the ring even came into being. It turns out that the genesis⑧ of one of the solar system's features is still an unsolved mystery.
“The planet was formed at a certain point during the formation of the solar system, and we don't k now if the rings formed at the same time or if they were formed much later,” says Cornell University astrophysicist⑨ Maryame El Moutamid. “And the reason why it's so interesting is not only to know that but to understand the Saturn system—we have a planet, a ring system, and a moon system, and we think there is a connection between the rings and the moons.”
That enigma⑩ is uniquely fascinating. For the most part, scientists have a good on the origin of our solar system's most sights: a chasm (裂缝) carved into Mars that would dwarf the Grand Canyon, Jupiter's churning (汹涌澎湃的) Great Red Spot , the moon's enormous southern basin. But not Saturn's rings.
“Saturn's rings are unique,” says Jeff Cuzzi of NASA's Ames Research Center. “They're the only big, rings, and they're very, very bright, which is unusual. So this has been a puzzle.”
Scientists who think about this question tend to into two camps. The first group suggests that Saturn's rings are primordial (原生的)—that they formed along with the planet more than four billion years ago—and that Saturn has never been a boring, blah (乏味的) world.
The other group suspects the rings are much younger, formed within the past several hundred million years. Under that theory, the rings are so young that if the dinosaurs had had a space program, they'd have seen a ringless Saturn through their telescopes.
“Both scenarios have great arguments, but they also have weaknesses,” El Moutamid says. “Honestly, and without trying to be too neutral , I think the old age makes more sense to me than the young age,” El Moutamid says. “That's my belief up to now, but I am happy to be convinced otherwise.”

One possible version:
I think space is worth exploring because we have benefited a lot from it, such as using satellites for communication and weather forecast. What's more, with further space research, we may solve the population problem by moving to other planets one day. The Starry Night was painted in June 1889 when Vincent van Gogh was staying at a home for the mentally ill. Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window—the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon. However, he didn't just paint the clouds. He also painted the massive circles of white and yellow racing across the sky.The stars and the moon hang bright in the night sky. Beneath this amazing sky, we see a sleeping village and a dark, lonely tree.
His unusual use of colour has led experts to think that Van Gogh's mental illness may have affected his sense of sight. He also took a drug that can make people see yellow spots, just like the stars in The Starry Night.
Unfortunately, Van Gogh's unique paintings weren't very popular and he only sold one painting in his lifetime. He also thought The Starry Night was a failure. However, the fact remains that The Starry Night is now one of the world's most famous paintings.
The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893.What makes it striking is that it shows a thin figure with an expression of fear—the figure's mouth is wide open and letting out a powerful scream. The figure covers his or her ears and looks directly at the viewer. This figure is set on a bridge above a dark, stormy sea, and against a burning orange red sky.
In his diary, Munch talked about what inspired him. “I was walking down the road with two friends when the sun set; suddenly the sky turned as red as blood...I stood there shaking. Then I heard the scream of nature.”
Many experts say that The Scream is connected to Munch's mental health problems, which caused him a lot of pain.

3.What is the setting of the figure of The Scream

(2024·杭州高一检测)A deaf and blind artist, Tony Giordano led an adventurous life, traveling and playing sports, before completely losing his sight and hearing in 2018.“I was into everything. I loved adventures,” the Brooklyn native said during a Newsday interview on Tuesday.
After learning to communicate using sign language, Giordano wondered what to do next after his sight and hearing losses. While reinventing his life, Giordano said getting into art was not something that crossed his mind at first. But after taking a creative arts class at the North Shore facility, Giordano began to discover he enjoyed it. Drawing on his nearly 30 years of experience as an auto mechanic, his welding (焊接) skills and various bursts of inspiration, Giordano began pouring himself into what's become his specialty—designing metal sculptures.
More than a year later, Giordano now is getting recognition for his art pieces. In December, Giordano made his first sale of a sculpture, a larger than life hand made of copper pipes and titled “I Love You” to artist and collector Jennifer Contini for $1,000. While proud of selling his first art piece, Giordano—who also repairs bicycles at a bike repair shop in St. James—admitted it made him a bit sad.
“His work ethic is really incredible,” said Antonia Isnardi, Giordano's art teacher. “Learning sculpture is really tough, requiring enormous attention and patience. He could easily say ‘I lost my vision. I can't do this’, but he keeps fighting. He perseveres in everything and is willing to try something new to improve in any way. ”
Giordano will leave the Port Washington center this year and return to his home in the South. But he said he considered art his next adventure and hoped his sculptures would be a way to spread a positive message about the capabilities of the deaf and blind community.

(2024·青岛高一期中)The word “art” usually evokes (唤起) images of white walled galleries, abstract paintings costing millions of dollars and wealthy people, far removed from our everyday experience. Yet, art in the 21st century is a different story.
The Internet has weakened the idea that art appreciation is only for the rich. It has enabled more people than ever to have access to izens are not only consumers of art but creators and participants. The social media has made it much easier to share unprofessional work with the whole world. An unprofessional artist can now sell work or get advertising money from online videos.
“A picture is worth a thousand words” is the motto of data visualisation (可视化)fans. The amount of information available today can be huge, so some people are working on presenting data using visually appealing diagrams that are easy for the public to understand. Of course, diagrams can also be used by dishonest people to mislead the audience, so we need to take care to interpret them the right way.
Another way that art advances education is by enabling us to understand concepts that are invisible to the naked eye. For most biology students, the names and functions of dozens of proteins go in one ear and out the other, but unforgettable videos like The Inner Life of the Cell turn proteins into tiny people with different jobs in a city of large machinery. The same goes for concepts in physics such as black holes—we can understand them better with the help of artists who have backgrounds in both art and science.
Even though most people may not be consciously aware of it, art is all around us. As most of our surrounding environment is man made, everything in it contains some elements of art and can influence our behaviour—telling us where to go or how to interact with objects, feeding us true or false information and controlling our emotions. Art indeed has a greater impact than many would believe it does.

性格孤僻的小女孩玛丽、农家小子迪肯和体弱多病的少爷柯林成了好朋友,他们找到了秘密花园的钥匙,和花园一起经历了一次诗意般的复活。
Dickon stopped and lifted his face to look up① at the climbing and hanging sprays above him—“there'll be a fountain② of roses here this summer.”
They went from bush to bush and from tree to tree. He was very strong and clever with his knife and knew how to cut the dry and dead wood away, and could tell when an unpromising③ twig (嫩枝) had green life in it. In the course④ of half an hour Mary thought she could tell too, and when he cut through a lifeless looking branch she would cry out joyfully⑤ under her breath⑥ when she caught sight of⑦ the moist⑧ green. The spade⑨, and hoe (锄头), and fork were very useful. He showed her how to use the fork while he dug⑩ about roots with the spade and stirred the earth and let the air in.
They were working industriously round one of the biggest standard roses when he caught sight of something that made him utter an exclamation of surprise.
“Why!” he cried, pointing to the grass a few feet away. “Who did that there?”
It was one of Mary's own little clearings round the pale green points.
“I did it,” said Mary.
“Why, I thought you didn't know nothing about gardening,” he exclaimed.
“I don't,” she answered, “but they were so little, and the grass was so thick and strong, and they looked as if they had no room to breathe . So I made a place for them. I don't even know what they are.”
Dickon went and knelt down by them, smiling his wide smile.
“They will be a sight ,” he said.
“I'm growing fatter,” said Mary, “and I'm growing stronger. I used always to be tired. When I dig, I'm not tired at all. I like to smell the earth when it's turned up .”
“It's good for you,” he said, nodding his head wisely .
“Do you never catch cold?”inquired Mary, gazing at him wonderingly . She had never seen such a funny boy, or such a nice one.
“Not me,” he said, grinning .
He was working all the time he was talking and Mary was following him and helping him with her fork or the trowel (小铲子).
“There's a lot of work to do here!” he said once.
“Will you come again and help me to do it?” Mary begged . “I'm sure I can help, too. I can dig and pull up weeds, and do whatever you tell me. Oh, do come, Dickon!”
“I'll come every day if tha' wants me, rain or shine,” he answered stoutly . “It's the best fun I ever had in my life.”
“If you will come,” said Mary, “if you will help me to make it alive ,” she ended helplessly .
“Sure!”said Dickon, “It's nicer like this with things running wild.”
“Don't let us make it tidy ,” said Mary anxiously . “It wouldn't seem like a secret garden if it was tidy.”
Mistress Mary always felt that however many years she lived she should never forget that first morning when her garden began to grow. Of course, it did seem to begin to grow for her that morning.
When Dickon began to clear places to plant seeds, Mary frowned a little. Mary, kneeling by him holding the seeds, looked at him and stopped frowning.
“Dickon,” she said, “you are as nice as Martha said you were. I like you, and you make the fifth person. I never thought I should like five people.”

【改编自译林选必一U3】
First impressions
As a huge art fan, I knew exactly what I was looking forward to most about my trip to Paris: visiting the Musée d'Orsay. Housed in an old railway building, this world famous art museum features some of the best known paintings from the Impressionist movement of the 19th century.
As I wandered through the Impressionist gallery, I appreciated masterpieces like The Ballet Class and The Card Players. Even though I had admired them hundreds of times on my computer screen, nothing could have prepared me for the wonder I felt when I finally laid eyes on the real thing. While it was hard to pick a favourite painting out of so many amazing works, the artists who made the deepest impression on me were two of the greatest Impressionist painters, Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir.
I could see from Monet's works that he was greatly inspired by nature. In the last three decades of his life he painted mostly scenes from his garden. One of these scenes is shown in the famous piece Blue Water Lilies, which I studied for quite a while in the gallery. I couldn't believe it when I heard he did around 250 paintings of the same water lily pond, all in different colours and styles. It is amazing that every time Monet studied this simple scene, he brought the pond's beauty to the canvas in a unique way.
Renoir, I noticed, preferred to paint scenes of everyday life. For me, the most interesting of his paintings is his 1876 masterpiece Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette, which shows life in a busy neighbourhood of Paris on a Sunday afternoon. When I saw it up close, I was struck by the small areas of light across the painting, and the way the soft edges of the figures seemed to mix together. There's so much going on, but so little clear detail. This effect makes the lively movement of the dance almost jump out at the viewer.

(2024·黑龙江哈师大附中高一期中)Cimabue, the greatest painter of the Middle Ages in Italy, was surprised one day after his lunch break to discover that a fly had seated itself under the nose of a character that he had been working on. He swatted (重拍) at the fly, but it did not move. He reached out to touch the insect, only to find it was only wet paint. Turning around, he saw that his apprentice(学徒), Giotto, was laughing. Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto di Bondone was born into a poor family in a village. Legend has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside, he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so vivid that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint. That was how Giotto's story began in Florence, where the young student flourished under Cimabue's instruction and soon surpassed his master in skill.
At that time, people in paintings didn't look real, and the symbolism of art was difficult for viewers to connect with it. Innovation (创新) was not stressed, so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.
However, Giotto thought art should be something more connected with people in a more realistic way. His masterpieces included the forty major frescoes(湿壁画)for the Arena Chapel. Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then, he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted. He created three dimensional space by using perspective (透视法), something that had not been done since Roman times.
In addition to painting, Giotto wrote poetry and drew architectural plans. When Giotto was in his sixties, he painted The Ognissanti Madonna, another famous work of art. He continued working until the age of seventy. The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized (彻底改变) the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.

(2024·绵阳高一期末)Ancient Chinese paintings are always in a vivid state for the world to appreciate, interpret and pass on. Each signature has the echo of history and the breathing of time.
When a scroll(卷轴)is opened, the art of painting is transformed into a living story, and the hidden history wakes up from the painting.Night Revels of Han Xizai is described as the earliest human “movie” with the last emperor of Southern Tang Dynasty as the“producer”,the painter Gu Hongzhong as the “cameraman”, and Han Xizai as the “leading actor”.It is said that Han Xizai understood the suspicion (怀疑) of the emperor and the intention of the painter's visit, so he staged a banquet (宴会)with songs, dances and drinks to protect himself.Future generations would be able to feel the undeclared battles and historical suspicions of the ruler and the minister of that era through this painting.
Then there is Emperor Taizong Receiving the Tibetan Envoy, which gives you the opportunity to step into the Zhenguan Period and watch the scene of Li Shimin,Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, receiving Lu Dongzan in the palace. The paintings are used to record history and have been passed down for thousands of years. They are ancient paintings,as well as historical documents that can be read at any time. Each one of them is a parallel universe, allowing us to have a glimpse of those historical ups and downs.
People of later generations want to use advanced technology and innovative ideas to make history and its stories come alive. Thus, at the 2022 Spring Festival Gala, a dance titled The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting, based on the painting A panorama of Rivers and Mountains, became a hit.We realize that pictures can not only be vivid on paper, but can also be alive in 3D.

(2024·广州番禺高一开学统考)Vincent Willem van Gogh is a great Dutch painter. In 2017, one of his paintings was sold for $81 million. 2021 seemed to be Vincent Willem van Gogh's year. There were at least five different exhibits in nearly 40 U.S. cities regarding his works. It's very surprising to know he sold only one painting in his lifetime, for only little profit (利润). How did this now-famous painter fail to escape attention after his death It was probably thanks to a woman.
Six months after Van Gogh died, his beloved brother Theo passed away, who had expected to make his brother's works well known. Fortunately, Theo's wife Johanna van Gogh Bonger, as an English teacher at two different girls' schools before her marriage, was left with their son and a sizable art collection. She decided to help Theo's wishes come true. “During her lifetime, she devoted herself to raising awareness of Vincent's art and letters,” says Luijten, author of Johanna's lifetime story.
Johanna tried all her best to improve Van Gogh's name. To do this, she chose some of his works to sell and encouraged writers and art critics to write about his paintings though she met with frequent refusal. Johanna didn't lose heart. She lent some pieces to well known museums and organized countless exhibitions and sales. “One of Johanna's major achievements was the organization of an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1905, where she collected no less than 484 of Van Gogh's works. A Van Gogh exhibition of this size would never again be matched,” Luijten explains. Another particular move happened in 1914 when Johanna published Van Gogh's letters. Theo had kept hundreds of letters. “This was of great importance, as following the publication of the letters, the appreciation of Van Gogh as an artist increased further,” says Luijten.
“There's little doubt that although Van Gogh was great, he wouldn't be remembered to the level seen today without the influence of Johanna,” says Luijten.

Every year in May, art galleries and museums prepare shows to honor Leonardo Da Vinci, who died in France on May 2,1519.He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting—Landscape 8P which, they think, is Da Vinci's earliest known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images (图像), not one. One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to August 5, 1473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old. It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back, perhaps because it was wiped off. Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this “Mirror writing”. It's a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells about an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said, “Leonardo was born left handed, but was taught to write with his right hand from a very young age. By looking at his writings, including from this drawing, we can see his right handed handwriting is educated and well done.”
Experts compared the two handwriting samples and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape 8P from its number in an art list. It will be part of an exhibit at Italy's Uffizi Gallery. The gallery director, Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo's drawing technique and his abilities in writing.

One possible version:
The Sunflowers is an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh, a great painter from the Netherlands. It was completed in Arles in 1889 and is one of his most famous works.
It shows sunflowers in a vase, mostly in three shades of yellow, from bright yellow to brownish yellow. I can see the flowers are at different stages of life—some are just starting to bloom and some are starting to wither.
The painting leaves a great impression on me, showing me the meaning of life. Each of the flowers is trying its best to grow and show its beauty,no matter which stage of life it is at. The painting gives me a deeper understanding of life.

Xu Beihong is one Chinese well known twentieth-century artist who is famous for his lively horse paintings.
Xu Beihong followed the traditional Chinese style of painting, so Galloping Horse is known for its brush drawings in black inks and natural colors. The painting Galloping Horse not only shows one horse running towards us, which looks wonderfully alive, but also represents the personality and ideal of the gifted painter.

*The past decade witnessed the great changes in this city.
过去的十年见证了这个城市的巨大变化。
*That chilly night witnessed him walking with great difficulty in the snow.
那个寒冷的夜晚见证了他在雪中艰难地行走。
2.比喻/拟人句
读后续写中运用比喻的修辞手法可以创造视觉和情感上的联想,运用拟人的修辞手法能增加描写的生动感和表达的深度。
*The stars twinkled like a child's curious eyes blinking with anticipation.
星星闪烁着,就像孩子好奇的眼睛满怀期待地闪烁着。
*The smell of the popcorn filled the house, which, as if by magic, had turned into a bakery.
就像变魔术一样,爆米花的香味充满了整个屋子,这里变成了一家面包店。
3.完全倒装句
读后续写中最常出现的环境描写是地点、方位的描写,常用“完全倒装句”这一句式结构。
*From our neighbor's house came a beautiful music.
从我们邻居家传来了美妙的音乐。
*At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Li Mei's age.
*Bathed in wonderful sunshine, other students were busy chatting and taking photos with their teachers, while Steven was sitting quietly on his chair, drawing something.

[1]Carlos and Maya dreamed of becoming space explorers.
[2]On their way home, Carlos and Maya saw a spaceship in the window of a toy store. They went inside the store to see how much it cost. They saw the price and it was too expensive. They tried to pool their money together but it still wasn't enough.
[3]They left the store, sad and disappointed. Carlos suddenly realized that his birthday was coming up. Maybe he could ask their parents to buy the spaceship as a gift for his birthday.
[4]When they got home, Carlos ran straight to their mother and told her what he wanted for his birthday.
[5]Their family didn't have much when it came to money. So, when their dad stopped by the store to see the toy that Carlos wanted, he found it was too expensive. They couldn't afford it.
[6]On the day of his birthday, Carlos got up early, excited to see his gift. In the living room lay a spaceship that was made out of a cardboard box. His dad had made it for him. It had wings on each side and had enough space to ride in. It was a spaceship but it wasn't what he wanted.
[7]Tears flowed (流) from Carlos' eyes and he ran back to his room. Maya had just woken up and saw their mom knocking on the door and asking Carlos to come out. But he didn't want to.
[8]Maya got to the living room but couldn't see the spaceship they had seen, only the cardboard box. She saw their dad beside it, bending down (弯着腰) on one knee with his head down. Silence filled the whole room.
[9]Maya didn't want her brother to be sad on his birthday. So she tried to think of a way to cheer her brother up. She looked at the cardboard spaceship and got an idea.
[10]Carlos didn't have breakfast and now he was hungry. He was about to get out of bed when he heard a knock on the door. It was Maya. She said that they had a surprise for him.

Carlos opened the door and just saw Maya was sitting in the cardboard spaceship. Driven by curiosity, Carlos walked towards the spaceship quickly. Maya invited Carlos to sit in front of her and drive the spaceship. Seeing the obvious excitement on Maya's face, Carlos got in the spaceship and sat down immediately. After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art
25 March-13 August
Rooms 1 to 8
Explore a period of great change when artists broke with established tradition and laid the foundations for the art of the 20th and the 21st centuries.
The decades between 1880 and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 were a complex, energetic period of artistic questioning, searching, risk taking and innovation.
The exhibition celebrates the achievements of three giants of the period: Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and follows the influences they had on younger generations of French artists and on wider circles of artists across Europe.
With over a hundred works by artists ranging from Picasso to Mondrian and a selection of sculptures by artists including Rodin and Camille Claudel, the exhibition follows the creation of a new, modern art, free of convention, taking in Expressionism and Abstraction. The exhibition includes some of the most famous works of art created during these decades. Important loans come to the exhibition from institutions and private collections worldwide.

Inside the low lighting of Gather East Rock, the smell of coffee beans swirls (打旋) through the air.Art adorns (装点) the blue walls, but one painting stands out among the others. The painting's name is Mother Divine, by the artist Sarahi Zacatelco. The mother in question is a green woman, with colorful plants adorning her head and water dripping (滴下) down her neck.In every brushstroke, Zacatelco pays homage (敬意) to the man who taught her how to paint: her grandfather Agustin.
Born in 1982, Zacatelco learned how to create art from her grandfather in Oaxaca. At the time, her grandfather lived with her while her mother worked.Together, the two spent hours going out to the central plaza in Juchitán, where she let her senses take over.“You can see the food, you can smell it, you can see the lady selling flowers, and you can see everything,” she recalled excitedly. When she was six years old, her grandfather gave her a piece of paper and watercolors and showed her how to put the colors on it.She hasn't stopped making art since.
Zacatelco's grandparents made chess pieces out of rocks and wood to sell. They also made Talavera pottery (陶器) pieces, which Zacatelco described as “a Baroque tradition” that one might see in old colonial (殖民地的) homes. She no longer has any of her grandparent's Talavera—the tradition was lost due to being poorly paid and a lot of effort going into each piece.
In the 1990s, Zacatelco's mother decided to move her family to give them a better life. She moved her children to Mexico City, then to the Bronx, and then to the Brownsville neighborhood in Eastern Brooklyn. The family moved to Fair Haven, where Zacatelco still lives, in 2001.She called it the perfect place to raise two boys and two girls. Her family did not keep any of her grandfather's old art before he died. But his artistic spirit did not die with him.Zacatelco carries on his legacy today with her art.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1565 realistic painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “The work describes farmers cutting wheat nearly as tall as they are,” Ghent University biologist Ive De Smet says. “Nowadays, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see wheat is about knee high, which is a result of selective breeding (培育) from the second half of the 20th century.” De Smet says he's teaming up with art historian David Vergauwen of Amarant to look at things where they can spot differences in shape, in color, and in size. Wheat is just one example of how a historical artwork can help track the transformation of food crops over time.
Friends since childhood, they took an interest in plants in artworks and began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum in Russia—where they noticed an odd looking watermelon in an early 17th century painting by Flemish artist Frans Snyders.
“So if you think of a watermelon, you cut it through, and it should be dark red on the inside. But that one appeared to be pale and white.” De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But Vergauwen said, “This is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he paints it like that, that's the way it must have been.” Other paintings showed that both red and white watermelons were raised during the 17th century.
The team hopes to set up an online research database of historical plant artworks. They create a social media hashtag (主题标签)for it. Anyone could send pictures of relevant artworks and details of plants when they visit a museum or exhibition through the hashtag. But, they add, the sources need to be realistic. “If you're going to use, for example, Picasso to understand how a pear looked, you might be misled.”

For centuries, artists usually give people an impression: they are the “Starving Artists”, struggling to make ends meet. Henri Murger proved that. He was born the son of a doorman in France. Living in Paris, he was surrounded by creative geniuses and dreamed of joining them, but he grew upset with his failure to earn money.
In 1847, Murger published a book. It's a collection of stories about poverty, which launched the concept of the “Starving Artists” into the public's understanding as the model for a creative life. To this day, it endures as the model for what we imagine when we think of the word “artist”.
Today, what we forget is that the story of the “Starving Artist” is a myth. In fact, it is really just an imaginary story. Due to the power of this myth in Murger's book, many of us just want to become lawyers instead of writers, bankers instead of poets, and doctors instead of painters. Nobody wants to struggle ultimately. Thus, we just keep our passion a hobby instead of a career.
In the early Renaissance, artists did not have reputations for being diligent workers. They were considered manual laborers, receiving small amounts of money for their work. Michelangelo Buonarroti, however, changed all that. He was not only a master sculptor but also the most affluent artist of his time. After him, every artist began to see a “new pattern of doing things”, in the words of Bill Wallace, professor of art history at Washington University. Michelangelo established the idea that an artist could become a new figure in society and have a higher social status, and also that he could become financially successful.
Michelangelo did not need to starve for his creations, and neither do you. When we hear the tales and warnings about what it means to be an artist, we must understand an important truth—you don't have to starve and you might as well make a living from your creative talents.

第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Risha loved school. However, there was one class Risha worried about more than any other—art. She didn't know why she just wasn't any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.
Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms.Clay was a great teacher, and Risha liked her a lot. But this announcement made Risha nervous. “Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Risha found herself sinking lower into her chair.
Risha had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Risha felt frightened, so after school Risha asked Ms.Clay if she could write an article about art instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you, Risha,” Ms. Clay said. “Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want,” Ms. Clay smiled at her. “Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn't always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can't wait to see it.”
When Risha arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms.Clay's words. “Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings.” Risha wrote the word “terrified” on a piece of paper. She crumpled (弄皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.

One possible version:
Risha stared at the crumpled ball, which reminded her of a snowball. Suddenly an idea struck her. Why not create a winter wonderland out of crumpled paper Risha didn't have to draw or paint or even cut. Risha made many paper balls, glued them all together, and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman. The snowman wore a hat made of black paper and a scarf made of red paper. Her finished project was really incredible.
On Friday, Risha carried her snowman themed project into the library. She noticed the smile and the nods from teachers and other students as she put her work on a table. Ms. Clay came up to Risha. “You have created a creative piece of artwork. I am so proud of you!” Ms. Clay said. Risha was proud of herself, too. Her pride grew when Ms. Clay placed a first place star on her artwork. “Perhaps I can be a good artist,” Risha thought.Period 3 Developing ideas & Presenting ideas
