Today, we’re going to talk about a color that all Chinese people love—red! In China, red is not just a color. It is a symbol of good luck and happiness and it is very important in our culture.
In the new year, Chinese parents put some money in a red paper bag and give it to their children. This is to wish kids good luck in the new year. People write some good words on the red paper called chunlian. People think chunlian can bring good wishes for the new year. The streets are full of red lanterns (灯笼) —red is the “star color” of the New Year!
When we celebrate our birthdays, we also need the Chinese red. On birthdays, some Chinese people like wearing red clothes and eating red eggs. They hope they can be healthy and have a long life.
