Have you ever woken up in the dark, eyes open but body frozen—unable to sit up or call out Some even see a dark figure or feel a weight on their chest. This strange experience is called sleep paralysis (瘫痪).
It is said that many people around the world have felt sleep paralysis at least once in their lives. ★ For centuries, people have had all kinds of far-fetched ideas about it—some blaming ghosts or evil spirits, others seeing it as a sign of the soul shortly leaving the body, and still others saying it was a message from parallel universes.
However, scientists have a clear, scientific explanation now. Sleep paralysis is a short period when you can’t move your body. This happens as you’re moving back and forth between sleep and wakefulness, because your brain becomes awake quicker than your body does. When we sleep deeply, our brain stops our muscles from moving—this is called “muscle atonia” (肌肉松弛), a natural way to keep us safe. It’s like a guard stopping us from acting out dreams and hurting ourselves. The scary scenes are just leftover parts of our dreams.
In fact, sleep paralysis is common and it usually lasts only a few seconds or minutes. It usually ends on its own, or when someone moves or touches you or speaks to you. If it happens very often and affects your sleep, it may be linked to stress, irregular (不规律) sleep, or sleeping on your back. You can try sleeping on your side, keeping a regular bedtime, or relaxing more before sleep. If it still troubles you, talk to a doctor.
Sleep paralysis is not a mystery or supernatural. It’s just a small mistake in how our brain and body work during sleep. With science on our side, there’s no need to fear it anymore.
36. What is the thing that happens during sleep paralysis
A. Being able to sit up. B. Seeing men in black. C. Calling out. D. Feeling pressure.

38. What might happen if our brain didn’t have muscle atonia during the sleep
A. Have too many dreams. B. Lead to movement problems.
C. Be unable to fall asleep. D. Act out our dreams and get hurt.
39. In which situation might people experience sleep paralysis more often
A. Stay up working for a week. B. Keep a regular bedtime.
C. Have a balanced diet. D. Play sports twice a week.
40. What is the writing purpose of the last paragraph
