As the 2026 Spring Festival approaches (临近),China Central Television (CCTV) has shown four horse-themed mascots (吉祥物) for its Spring Festival Gala. Named Qiqi, Jiji, Chichi and Chengcheng, the mascots match the gala’s theme “Galloping Forward, Unstoppable”, (骐骥驰骋,势不可挡) and they carry rich Chinese cultural meanings.
The design idea of each mascot is from historical horse images (形象). Qiqi comes from the bronze horses of the Western Zhou Dynasty, showing nobility (高贵). Jiji is modeled after the “heavenly horse” (天马) of the Han Dynasty, a symbol of courage and progress. Chichi takes its look from the confident “three-flowered horse” of the Tang Dynasty. Chengcheng is based on the Przewalski’s horse-a rare wild horse in Asia-meaning the harmony (和谐) between humans and nature. All four mascots are decorated (装饰) with traditional cloud patterns, and they add cultural beauty to the designs.
In Chinese cultural tradition, horses stand for strength, persistence (坚持不懈) and good luck. These mascots are not just festival symbols; they are “cultural carriers” that help young people learn about ancient Chinese art and values in an interesting way. In fact, they act as cultural ambassadors (大使),connecting China’s past and present. When they appear at the 2026 Spring Festival Gala, they will share Chinese culture’s special beauty with viewers around the world. They’ll also give people all over the world a good chance to learn about Chinese festivals.

The Yangtze finless porpoise (长江江豚) is a special animal that only lives in China’s Yangtze River. People call it the “smiling angel (微笑天使)” because its mouth looks like it is always smiling.
Scientists are working hard to protect this animal because another animal called the baiji dolphin (白鱀豚) used to live in the same river. But in 2006, scientists found that the baiji dolphin vanished from the river. This made them worry about the Yangtze finless porpoise.
The number of Yangtze finless porpoises was once falling very fast. In 2012, there were only about 1,000 left. ▲ The government also saved them by stopping fishing in the river for ten years and making new environmental laws. By 2022, there were about 1,249 finless porpoises.
In 1990, some Yangtze finless porpoises were moved to a lake called Tian’e Zhou. At first, there were only five Yangtze finless porpoises in this lake. But now there are more than 100. Scientists also take care of them in a special place in Wuhan. Here, baby Yangtze finless porpoises are born and grow up safely. One baby called “Han Bao” was very special because it was the first baby born in this place and then it had its own baby there too.

China is a nation of etiquette (礼仪). Chinese people are among the most hospitable (好客的) people in the world. If foreigners visit a Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests.
When you visit a Chinese family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks like biscuits or candy. Someone in the family will also chat with you, never letting you feel lonely.
At the same time, other family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat their guests to a big meal. They always present more food than the guests can eat. And the guests must be the first to eat. Perhaps one of the things that surprise Western guests most is that the Chinese host likes to pick up food for visitors, which won’t happen at Western tables. The Chinese family go out of their way to make you feel at home. As you finish eating, the host usually says, “It seems that you didn’t eat much. Please have more.” Although you tell them you are full, they still put more food in your bowl.

Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral student at Tsinghua University, was named one of “Touching China’s 2024 Persons of the Year” on August 16,2025. On that Sunday, Pang said he would promise to work hard and live up to what his mother had expected of him.
Pang was born in Hebei in 1998. His life was really hard. His father had been ill for many years, his mother was disabled, and he himself was born with a heart problem. That meant he would probably need medical care for his whole life. Even with all these difficulties, he kept a positive (积极的) attitude because his mother always encouraged him. “She smiled every day—so why should I feel down ” he said.
In 2017, Pang got into Tsinghua University successfully with a high grade. At first, he felt quite stressed because people had high hopes for him. But later, he found he loved doing research very much. Thanks to his great efforts, he was directly accepted into the Doctor of Philosophy (哲学博士) program. Unluckily, his mother passed away before she could see his achievements.
Pang does not often share his feelings with others. Instead of expressing his love in words, he chooses to honor his mother through his own actions. His mother once wished he could do something for the country, so he made up his mind to focus on scientific research. He is sure that the Chinese people are brave and strong enough to deal with any trouble. “No matter how difficult life is, I will keep going ahead bravely,” he said.
