My undergraduate student needed advice after yet another failed experiment. Sitting across from me, she looked exhausted — frustrated even. I heard myself say, “This is part of research. You just have to push through.” But even as the words left my mouth, I felt uneasy. She nodded silently and shifted her posture. Afterward, she began showing up less frequently and eventually stopped coming altogether. I tried to explain it away: undergraduates sometimes get busy with coursework, lose interest or change direction, but deep down, I wondered what I could have done differently.
I became a mentor (导师) during my second year of Ph. D. but didn’t get much guidance on how to do it. I learned only by doing. There were moments I felt proud of. One student started out quiet and unsure, but over time grew into a most independent and confident young researcher. Before graduating, she told me, “You are the reason I stuck with this.” That moment stayed with me. But so did the other one — the silence, the absences, the slow fade-out. Had I failed her
It wasn’t until the final year of my Ph. D. that I came across a leaflet for a mentorship training workshop. Skeptical at first, I decided to try it. The program, called Entering Mentoring, brought together graduate students for weekly discussions. For the first time, I had the space to explore the invisible labor and emotional complexity of mentoring. One session asked us to reflect on our own practices. I began to realize what might have been missing in my relationship with the student who had drifted away. I had never invited her to share her goals or concerns. I could have been more attentive to her unspoken struggles.
After the workshop, I began changing how I interacted with students. I now start by asking how they’re doing, not just experimental details. This shift has led to more honest conversations. I’ve learned that good mentors are built through reflection and training. I wish I’d attended that workshop earlier, but I’m grateful I did at all.
24. What primarily caused the student’s withdrawal according to paragraph 1
A. Demanding research challenges. B. Overwhelming academic workload.
C. Repeated failures in research. D. Unattended inner struggles.
25. Why did the author mention the transformation of another student
A. To highlight contrast in mentoring results.
B. To showcase his pride in her achievement.
C. To explain his own research breakthrough.
D. To illustrate his lack of proper guidance
26. What did the workshop mainly focus on
A. Developing excellent academic research skills.
B. Encouraging discussions among graduate students.
C. Exploring the interpersonal aspects of mentoring.
D. Displaying diverse personal mentoring approaches
27. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Responsible and reflective. B. Talented and intelligent.
C. Thoughtful and ambitious. D. Disciplined and considerate.
C
No one is sure exactly when or how the invasion(入侵) began. However, in 2014, when Asian common toads(蟾蜍) were officially spotted in Madagascar’s largest seaport, scientists immediately sounded the alarm. These invasive toads produce a poisonous chemical, stored in specialized glands(腺体) behind their eyes, which could spell death for any native species attempting to hunt them — a major threat to Madagascar’s biodiversity. Cane toads, which can remain poisonous long after they’re dead, created a similar problem when introduced to Australia in the 1930s.
The poisonous parts, known as parotoid glands, do not just allow toads to wreak havoc as invasive species. They probably also helped toads spread across large parts of the planet millions of years ago, according to research published in mid-October 2025.
Evidence suggests toads got their start in South America but it is unclear exactly when and how they spread to other continents. To find out, the scientists of the research analyzed DNA from 124 species across six continents. Their reconstructed evolutionary history confirmed that toads originated in South America approximately 61 million years ago; however, it also uncovered something unexpected: Instead of entering Asia from North America via the land bridge, early toads appear to have crossed directly from South America to Africa.
The team also discovered a rapid rise in the number of new species shortly after toads began to spread out of South America, which happened during a historic transition known as the Eocene-Oligocene extinction event, about 33.5 million years ago. During that same period, toads evolved their parotoid glands.
Some of this evolutionary history appears to be repeating itself with modern invasive species. Although toads have spread around the world, there were a few barriers that were too much for them. Toads never made it on their own to Australia, for example, or crossed the Mozambique Channel from Africa to Madagascar and the nearby Mascarene Islands. Now, with a little help from humans, they have crossed these final frontiers.
28. What do the underlined words “wreak havoc” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Cause significant damage. B. Spread across remote regions.
C. Contribute to local biodiversity. D. Engage in dangerous hunting.
29. What happened to toads during the period of the extinction event
A. They lost their parotoid glands. B. Their population dropped sharply.
C. Their species diversified quickly. D. They began entering South America.
30. What can we learn from the text
A. Human activities are threatening toads. B. Toads made it on their own to Australia.
C. Humans play a role in the spread of toads. D. The birthplace of toads remains a mystery.
31. From which is the text most probably taken
A. A travel brochure. B. A science magazine.
C. A history course plan. D. A geography textbook.
D
When Alexander Fleming returned to his lab in 1928, he found a bacteria culture he had grown was infected by fungus(霉菌), killing any colonies it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin,” and seemingly in a single stroke, created the new field of antibiotics(抗生素).
That’s how most people see innovation: A flash of brilliance and Eureka! A new world is born. The truth, however, is messier. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use.
To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards(产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving scorn instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular miasma theory, which attributed disease to “bad airs.” After his death in 1865, germ theory was accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.
Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming’s paper, understood its importance, and developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War Ⅱ raging, the War Production Board enlisted 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics. Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
Penicillin owes much of its success to government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity lies until they team up with other visionaries and corporations, who might have the resources to fast-track their ideas. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius and the “eureka moment” breaks down.
32. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about
A. An account of a lab story. B. Redefinition of a traditional view.
C. Correction of a popular misconception. D. An analysis of a scientific phenomenon
33. What is the message conveyed in paragraph 3
A. Great minds think alike.
B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. Luck’s got your back when it comes to success.
D. Early work is a stepping stone to later breakthroughs.
34. What does the underlined part “ushering in” in the paragraph 4 mean
A. Delaying. B. Introducing. C. Predicting. D. Transforming.
35. Which of the following can be the best title
A. Great Innovations: Individuals Are True Heroes
B. From Failure to Success: The Story of Penicillin
C. The Lone Genius: Fleming’s Discovery of Penicillin
D. The Long Road to Penicillin: How Innovation Happens

How to Develop a Growth Mindset for Academic Success
In the journey of learning, what separates successful students from others is often not just intelligence, but mindset. A growth mindset-the belief that abilities can be developed through effort-has become a key factor in academic progress. 36 Instead of fearing challenges, they see them as opportunities to grow.
It stands in contrast to a fixed mindset, which believes abilities are fixed. For example, when facing a difficult exam or a complex assignment, a fixed mindset might lead you to think “I’m just not good at this subject,” while a growth mindset encourages you to say “I can improve with more practice.” 37
To develop a growth mindset, start by embracing mistakes. 38 Mistakes are not signs of failure but valuable feedback that helps you identify areas for improvement. When you make an error, ask yourself: “What can I learn from this ” rather than feeling discouraged. 39 Don’t just judge your performance by grades or test scores alone. Celebrate the time you spend studying, the questions you ask, and the progress you make step by step. This helps you build resilience and stay motivated even when the final outcome isn’t immediate.
Finally, surround yourself with people who inspire growth. 40 Their positive attitude towards learning will encourage you to push your limits and adopt a similar mindset. Remember, a growth mindset is not something you are born with-it’s a skill that can be cultivated with consistent effort.
A. No one achieves mastery without making mistakes along the way.
B. They are more likely to give up when faced with difficulties in study.
C. Many students struggle academically because they hold a fixed mindset.
D. Another effective strategy is to focus on the process rather than the result.
E. People with a growth mindset tend to achieve more in long-term learning.
F. Learn from classmates who view challenges as a chance to become better.
G. This difference in thinking affects how you approach tasks and handle setbacks.

In Benton School, the chatter of students filled Room 13 every day. Among the lively atmosphere, Wanda Petronski, a poor Polish girl, with her unruly hair and a faded blue dress that showed signs of frequent wear, became the target of cruel jokes among her classmates.
Each morning, as Wanda stepped into the classroom, a sudden silence would fall over the room. The abrupt silence was soon replaced by whispers and laughter. “Look, there’s Wanda,” Peggy would whisper to her friend Maggie, her eyes shining with mischief. Peggy, the most popular girl in class, was well-known for her sharp tongue and a good sense of fashion. Driven by a mix of boredom and meanness(恶意), she would call out, “How many dresses do you have now, Wanda ” Her voice was filled with pretended curiosity.
Wanda would hesitate, her fingers nervously twisting her dress. “A hundred,” she would reply in a soft murmur; her voice was barely heard. Instantly, the classroom would erupt in laughter. “A hundred!” Peggy would shout, her laughter echoing through the room. “I bet they’re all made of paper!” The other students would join in, their cruel laughter filling the air. Wanda’s face would redden with awkward, and she would quickly lower her head, unable to meet anyone’s eyes.
Miss Mason, their teacher, often tried to intervene. “That’s enough, class. Let’s start the lesson,” she would say firmly, attempting to restore order. But the damage had been done. Day after day, Peggy and her group of friends continued to make fun of Wanda, asking about her “hundred dresses” and making ill remarks about her plain clothes.
One day, Miss Mason announced an exciting drawing contest. The theme was “Design a Dress,” and the winning entries would be displayed in the school hall. Peggy, confident in her artistic abilities, was determined to claim victory.

根据第一段中“I heard myself say, ‘This is part of research. You just have to push through.’ But even as the words left my mouth, I felt uneasy. She nodded silently and shifted her posture. Afterward, she began showing up less frequently and eventually stopped coming altogether. I tried to explain it away: undergraduates sometimes get busy with coursework, lose interest or change direction, but deep down, I wondered what I could have done differently. (我听到自己说:‘这是研究的一部分。你必须坚持下去。’但话一出口,我就感到不安。她默默地点了点头,改变了姿势。之后,她开始不那么频繁地出现,最终完全不来了。我试图解释:本科生有时会忙于课程,失去兴趣或改变方向,但内心深处,我想知道我本可以采取什么不同的做法。)”可知,作者虽然给出了建议,但内心不安,且学生最终退缩,结合第三段中“I could have been more attentive to her unspoken struggles. (我本可以更加关注她未说出口的挣扎。)”可推知,学生退缩的主要原因是未得到关注的内心的挣扎。故选D项。
25. 推理判断题。根据第二段中“There were moments I felt proud of. One student started out quiet and unsure, but over time grew into a most independent and confident young researcher. Before graduating, she told me, ‘You are the reason I stuck with this.’ That moment stayed with me. But so did the other one — the silence, the absences, the slow fade-out. Had I failed her (有些时刻我感到自豪。一个学生一开始很安静,不确定,但随着时间的推移,她成长为一个最独立、自信的年轻研究员。毕业前,她告诉我:‘你是我坚持下来的原因。’那一刻一直萦绕在我心头。但另一个时刻也是如此——沉默、缺席、慢慢淡出。我让她失望了吗?)”可知,作者提到另一个学生的转变是为了与前文提到的退缩学生形成对比,突出导师结果的不同。故选A项。
根据第三段中“The program, called Entering Mentoring, brought together graduate students for weekly discussions. For the first time, I had the space to explore the invisible labor and emotional complexity of mentoring. (这个名为“进入导师角色”的项目每周都会召集研究生进行讨论。我第一次有机会探索导师工作中看不见的劳动和情感复杂性。)”可知,工作坊主要聚焦于导师工作中的人际关系方面。故选C项。
27. 推理判断题。根据第三段中“I began to realize what might have been missing in my relationship with the student who had drifted away. I had never invited her to share her goals or concerns. (我开始意识到,在我与那个渐行渐远的学生关系中,可能缺少了什么。我从未邀请她分享自己的目标或担忧。我本可以更加关注她未说出口的挣扎。)”以及最后一段中“After the workshop, I began changing how I interacted with students. I now start by asking how they’re doing, not just experimental details. This shift has led to more honest conversations. I’ve learned that good mentors are built through reflection and training. (工作坊结束后,我开始改变与学生互动的方式。我现在一开始会问他们过得怎么样,而不仅仅是实验细节。这种转变带来了更坦诚的对话。我了解到,好的导师是通过反思和培训建立起来的。)”可知,作者在面对学生退缩时进行了反思,并在工作坊后积极改变与学生的互动方式,这表明作者是一个负责任且善于反思的人。故选A项。
A 29. C 30. C 31. B
根据第二段中的“The poisonous parts, known as parotoid glands, do not just allow toads to wreak havoc as invasive species. They probably also helped toads spread across large parts of the planet millions of years ago, according to research published in mid-October 2025.(这些被称为耳后腺的有毒部位,不仅让蟾蜍作为入侵物种wreak havoc。根据2025年10月中旬发表的研究,它们可能还在数百万年前帮助蟾蜍遍布地球的大部分地区)”,结合第一段提到的亚洲普通蟾蜍入侵马达加斯加后,其毒素会导致当地物种死亡、威胁生物多样性,可猜测wreak havoc意为“造成重大破坏”,与Cause significant damage意思相近。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“The team also discovered a rapid rise in the number of new species shortly after toads began to spread out of South America, which happened during a historic transition known as the Eocene-Oligocene extinction event, about 33.5 million years ago. During that same period, toads evolved their parotoid glands.(该团队还发现,蟾蜍开始从南美洲扩散后不久,新物种的数量就迅速增加,这发生在大约3350万年前被称为始新世-渐新世灭绝事件的历史性转变期间。就在同一时期,蟾蜍进化出了它们的耳后腺)”可知,在灭绝事件期间,蟾蜍的物种迅速多样化。故选C项。
30. 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Toads never made it on their own to Australia, for example, or crossed the Mozambique Channel from Africa to Madagascar and the nearby Mascarene Islands. Now, with a little help from humans, they have crossed these final frontiers.(例如,蟾蜍从未靠自己的力量到达澳大利亚,也从未穿过莫桑比克海峡从非洲到达马达加斯加和附近的马斯克林群岛。现在,在人类的一点帮助下,它们跨越了这些最后的边界)”可知,人类在蟾蜍的传播中起到了一定作用。故选C项。

C 33. D 34. B 35. D
根据第一段中“Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and created the new field of antibiotics (抗生素). (弗莱明并没有简单地从头开始,而是把注意力转向了真菌。他发现了杀死细菌的物质,他称之为“青霉素”,并开创了抗生素的新领域)”以及第二段中的“That’s how most people see innovation: A flash of brilliance and Eureka! A new world is born. The truth, however, is messier.(这就是大多数人对创新的看法:灵光一现,然后豁然开朗!一个新世界诞生了。然而,事实要复杂得多)”可知,前两段先介绍了人们对创新的普遍误解,再指出真相,核心是纠正这种常见的错误认知。故选C项。
33. 推理判断题。根据第三段“ To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards(产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving scorn instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular miasma theory, which attributed disease to “bad airs.” After his death in 1865, germ theory was accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.(为了把弗莱明的发现放在背景中,想想伊格纳兹·塞梅尔韦斯(Ignaz Semmelweis),他是产科病房洗手的先驱,大大减少了产褥热,但却受到了批评,而不是名声。
根据第四段中的“By 1943, with World War Ⅱ raging, the War Production Board enlisted 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics.(到1943年,随着第二次世界大战的激烈进行,战争生产委员会招募了21家公司大规模生产青霉素,拯救了无数生命,并ushering in抗生素的新时代)”可知,青霉素的大规模生产拯救了无数人,也开启了抗生素的新时代。

E 37. G 38. A 39. D 40. F

Ways of Spring Festival Greetings in the Digital Age
The “Cultural Focus” column has launched a discussion on Spring Festival greetings in the digital age. I’d like to share my views.
Digital greetings, primarily through instant messaging apps like WeChat, have become dominant. People send creative digital red envelopes, customized stickers with blessings, and even short video wishes. The primary reason for their popularity is unparalleled convenience and instant connection across distances, which is especially valuable for families and friends separated by miles.
However, we must not overlook the irreplaceable value of traditional methods. Visiting relatives in person with heartfelt wishes and handwritten blessings on red paper carry a depth of sincerity and personal touch that digital messages often lack. They strengthen family bonds and preserve cultural rituals.
In my opinion, a balanced approach is best. We can embrace the efficiency of digital tools for widespread greetings while consciously making an effort to maintain meaningful traditional practices with close ones, ensuring the festival’s spirit of warmth and genuine connection thrives.

A few days later, Miss Mason announced the result and everyone was shocked. Wanda won the first prize, for she had submitted 100 exquisite, uniquely detailed fashion design drawings. Each drawing was a masterpiece, featuring elaborate patterns and vivid colors that far exceeded the simple sketches of the other students. Peggy and the class stared in disbelief at the beautiful display of Wanda’s talent. But Wanda wasn’t there to see her triumph. She had been absent for days, likely due to classmates’ constant bad behavior. The classroom was filled with an awkward silence as the students realized how wrong they had been to laugh at her.
Feeling a strong sense of guilt, Peggy and Maggie went to Wanda’s house with the good news. When they arrived, Wanda seemed surprised to see them. Peggy, her voice filled with regret, said, “Wanda, your drawings won! They’re amazing. We’re so sorry for being mean.” Maggie nodded in agreement. Wanda smiled gently and said, “It’s okay.” She then offered to give Peggy and Maggie some of her drawings. “I want you to have them,” she said. Her kindness touched their hearts. From that day on, Peggy and Maggie learned the importance of kindness and never judged others by their appearance again. Whenever anyone walked through the school hall and saw Wanda’s beautiful drawings, they were reminded of the power of forgiveness and the impact that a single act of kindness could have.
