Hello, everyone! My name is Bruce Hall. I'm happy to be your English teacher. First of all, I'd like to tell you something about myself. I was born in Paris. When I grew up, I wanted to make money. The winter of Paris is cold, but I didn't want to spend money on warm clothes. So I went to a warm place-Egypt, and led camels for tourists under the pyramids. After some time, I went to study at California State University, with the money I had earned in Egypt. Later, I went to Salt Lake City and became a high school teacher. It is five years ago since I came to China as a teacher of English. I have taught a wide range of students, such as kindergarten classes, primary school children, teenagers, university students and adults. My classes are designed specially to meet the needs of each student whether they want to prepare for various exams, study business English, or generally learn to speak English. I love to talk about Western culture, customs, traditions, lifestyle and education system. I'm an honest, friendly and reliable person, and I love to get to know new people and I'm ready to accept new challenges as they come to me. Inventors are always at work, dreaming up new technologies. Some inventions help us solve problems. Others make life easier, or more fun. Here, TFK(Time for Kids) presents 3 of our favourite inventions. See how they make us live a better life.
Stopping Sickness
Christine Schindler is an engineer. She wanted to help stop the spread of foodborne illnesses. So she created PATHSPOT.It uses light to scan a person's hands for harmful germs. Restaurant employees hold their hands beneath the scanner. Then the scanner judges whether they must be rewashed. About 100 locations have started using the product since it launched in May.
Talking Eyes
For people who are blind or have other visual problems, the ORCAM MYEYE 2 could be a game changer. It might also prove useful for people with reading difficulties. Described as “talking glasses”, this AI device can be attached to any eyeglass frame. It can identify faces. It can also read text aloud. Fitting all this power into such a small device is like “putting an elephant in a small closet”, says Amnon Shashua, the inventor of the technology. Now the device can be bought online.
Sport safe
Research shows that playing football increases the risk of brain injury. Still, about a million kids under the age of 13 play football, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. That's where the VICIS ZERO1 YOUTH football helmet comes in. It has thick, force absorbing support on the front and sides, where kids are likely to take the hardest hits on the field. This simple little device is helping to deal with one of the most annoying symptoms of Parkinson's disease—and its creators have just been awarded more than 1 million dollars.
Danish businesswoman Lise Pape was inspired to develop the Path Finder device after her own father developed Parkinson's disease in 2014. The device, which is attached to a patient's shoe and shines a laser (激光) onto the floor, helps to prevent “freezing of gait”:a common symptom of the disease which makes the patient feel as if they are unable to walk.
“People describe it as this feeling of being glued to the floor and being unable to step forward with their feet, despite having the intention to do so,” said Pape.“In fact, 70% of all falls in Parkinson's disease are thought to be due to this symptom.”
Surprisingly, researchers have found that it is easy for patients to avoid this symptom if they have a visual pattern for them to follow as they walk. That's why Pape designed the Path Finder laser pointer to display a bright green line in front of the wearer's feet.
Not only do studies show that the laser device helps to reduce the frequency of freezing episodes (发作), they also say that the Path Finder reduces the length of the episodes as well.
Since Pape founded her WalkWith Path company in 2017, the devices have been given to individuals and healthcare systems in Norway, Denmark, Canada, and the UK. Carlos Moedas, Chairman of Research and Science, said,“This device makes a real difference for senior citizens by helping them maintain an active social life as well as their independence.”

The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken it a step further—changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they're short of water and plants that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater.“We're thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,” explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow (发光) in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano's team found that they could create a faint light for three and a half hours. The light is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one off treatment that would last the plant's lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off “switch” where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source (电源)—such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway—a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输). Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.

In science, a theory is a reasonable explanation of observed events that are related. A theory often involves an imaginary model that helps scientists picture the way an observed event could be produced. A good example of this is found in the kinetic molecular (分子运动) theory, in which gases are pictured as being made up of many small particles (微粒) that are in constant motion.
A useful theory, in addition to explaining past observations, helps to predict events that have not as yet been observed. After a theory has been publicised, scientists design experiments to test the theory. If observations confirm the scientists' predictions, the theory is supported. If observations do not confirm the predictions, the scientists must search further. There may be a fault in the experiment, or the theory may have to be revised or rejected.
Science involves imagination and creative thinking as well as collecting information and performing experiments. Facts by themselves are not science. As the mathematician Jules Henri Poincare said:“Science is built with facts just as a house is built with bricks, but a collection of facts cannot be called science any more than a pile of bricks can be called a house.”
Most scientists start an investigation by finding out what other scientists have learnt about a particular problem. After known facts have been gathered, the scientist comes to the part of the investigation that requires considerable imagination. Possible solutions to the problem are formulated (制定). These possible solutions are called hypotheses(假设).
In a way, any hypothesis is a leap into the unknown. It extends the scientist's thinking beyond the known facts. The scientist plans experiments, performs calculations, and makes observations to test hypotheses. For without hypotheses, further investigation lacks purpose and direction. When hypotheses are confirmed, they are incorporated (合并) into theories.

2.可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。
参考词汇:故宫the Palace Museum
[答案]
Recently, we had a class discussion about whether it is necessary to apply high technology to the Palace Museum. Our opinions are divided.
Some support the creative measures, saying that the use of high technology can add beauty to the Palace Museum, thus making it more attractive to visitors. However, those who are against the idea say that it will destroy the original appearance of the Palace Museum. More importantly, it is extremely essential to respect the history and our tradition and culture.
In my opinion, lots of work can be done to appeal to more visitors. It's our duty to provide a complete and true ancient palace for the world.
第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked,“Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes...but I don't have money on me...” she replied.
“That's nothing. I'll treat you today,” said the man.“Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled,“Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered hands.“Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back.
[答案]
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house.“Where could my mother be?” she wondered,“was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I've been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn't help throwing herself into her mother's arms.“Mum, I'm so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.第四单元综合质量检测

Players on 1,500 youth teams have worn the helmet.
21.What is the function of Pathspot?( )
A.Killing the germs on hands.
B.Checking if hands are clean.

24.What made Lise Pape decide to invent the Path Finder?( )
A.Her father's Parkinson's disease.
B.Her father's expectations for her.
C.Her desire to win the 1 million dollars.
D.Her passion for invention.
25.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?( )
A.Freezing of gait.
B.A sudden fall.
C.The laser pointer.
D.The intention to walk.
26.How does the device benefit people with Parkinson's disease?( )
A.By warning them of falls.
B.By reducing their loneliness.
C.By helping reduce freezing episodes.
D.By improving their eyesight.
27.What does Carlos Moedas think of the device?( )
A.Excellent. B.Ordinary.
C.Expensive. D.Impractical.
C
28.What is the first paragraph mainly about?( )
A.A new study of different plants.
B.A big fall in crime rates.
C.Employees from various workplaces.
D.Benefits from green plants.
29.What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineers?( )
A.To detect plants' lack of water.
B.To change compositions of plants.
C.To make the life of plants longer.
D.To test chemicals in plants.
30.What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?( )
A.They will speed up energy production.
B.They may transmit electricity to the home.
C.They might help reduce energy consumption.
D.They could take the place of power plants.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?( )
A.Can We Grow More Glowing Plants
B.How Do We Live with Glowing Plants
C.Could Glowing Plants Replace Lamps
D.How Do Glowing Plants Decorate the Workplaces
D
32.According to Paragraph 2, a useful theory is one that helps scientists to__________.
A.observe events
B.make predictions
C.publicise new findings
D.find errors in the past experiments
33.Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraphs 3 and 4?( )
A.Science is more than a collection of facts.
B.Hypotheses are made before an observed event.
C.Hypotheses are facts that are not proven to be true.
D.A scientist's most difficult task is collecting information.
34.According to the last paragraph, a major function of hypotheses is ________.( )
A.confirming known facts
B.linking together different theories
C.providing direction for scientific research
D.communicating a scientist's thoughts to others
35.What may be the best title of this passage?( )
A.Hypotheses B.Observations
C.Scientific Theories D.Creative Thinking

Where is the future going
Our work habits have changed a lot over the past thirty years. While our parents may have expected to stay in one job, with one company, for their whole life, we are faced with the possibility of changing jobs and even careers several times. Our understanding of education, work and society is different from that of earlier generations.36(____)Many of today's jobs will either disappear or change in the next ten years or so.
People in the future will still need food, of course, but the way we produce food will not be the same.37(____)The good news for small farmers is that there will also be opportunities for new kinds of farming, for example farms that grow organic food and environmentally friendly food.
What about people who work with computers Well, things will change for them, too. More advanced computer programmes and new technologies will remove the need for computer operators who perform simple actions. Modern search engines can do many of the things that yesterday's computer operators did. Word processing and simple information handling can be done automatically.38(____)
A rapidly changing job market also creates new challenges for students, teachers and parents. 39(____)And it is becoming more difficult for parents to understand the kind of world their children are entering. Schools and teachers are also facing difficulties as they try to adapt to the new needs of their students, and the students themselves have to try to deal with all the changes and many questions.
40(____)There are no easy answers, but we can try to turn challenges into opportunities. As the job market changes, new areas of growth appear. If we become good learners, and if we work together with our parents, friends and teachers, we can find ways to create a future where there is room for all of us to do what we are good at and enjoy.
A.What life will be like in the future is difficult to predict.
B.Not only the way we work and view the job has changed.
C.It is hard to imagine where all these advanced technologies will lead us.
D.For people with these skills, there will be new jobs as database managers.
E.Where is the future going and what can we do to find a place for ourselves in it
F.Small farms that use old methods will be replaced by large farms with high efficiency.
G.The difference in values, skills, education and desires between two generations is growing.
