Bamboo carving has deep cultural roots. While its origins date back to the Six Dynasties period, the art was well received by people during the Tang Dynasty, and achieved its golden age during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when scholars(学者) praised bamboo for symbolizing strength and honesty. In the Northern Song Dynasty Su Shi wrote that he would rather dine without meat than live without bamboo. Among regional styles, Hakka bamboo carving stood out by mixing traditional calligraphy with creative designs. In 2010, it was listed as a provincial - level intangible cultural heritage in Jiangxi.
Guo's introduction to the art began young—he learned from his father, who taught him strict rules, like using only winter - cut bamboos and memorizing over 50 steps to prepare the materials before carving. In recent years, 3D printers have mostly been used to create small, specialized items (物品). This includes parts for automobiles, airplanes and medical devices. Snow leopards, found in the mountainous regions of 12 Asian countries, including Russia, Nepal, and China, are facing population decline due to historical hunting and habitat damage. But a new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that their genetic(基因的)makeup could also be influencing their falling population.
These snow leopards are highly adapted to extreme cold and mountainous environments. But there aren't many snow leopards left: Population is about 4,500 to 7,500. And because of this small population size, they are classified as "vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species.
"Because their habitat isn't so suitable for living, human population growth didn't really affect snow leopards very much, but climate change will," says Dmitri Petrov, one of the study's authors. "Humans don't need to show up in their mountains to build or start farming. The climate changes, and it affects everyone and everything, even in such far areas."
For this study, researchers made whole - DNA sequencing data(全基因组测序数据)for 37 snow leopards. The study found that many of these snow leopards share the same DNA. However, low genetic difference can cause a problem for their survival. I looked down to find a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. She seemed short and thin
with a noticeable purple scar on her cheek. Before I could say a word, she asked shyly if I would
play dolls with her. At the sight of such a lovely girl, my heart softened. “Sure. I’d love to.” I replied
gently and put my hand on her head. Hearing my answer, her face lit up with joy. She took me by
the hand immediately, leading me to her favorite doll house. It was at that moment that watching her
laugh and play, I began to understand why my mom devoted herself to helping others at the shelter .
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times. During each visit, more children opened up to
me about their difficult lives. I listened attentively and joined them in various activities, trying to
make them feel seen and cared for. Despite the hardships, they were still seeking love and full of
hope. Never had I been so grateful for my mom’s taking me to the shelter that summer. It was the
first time that I had truly realized the meaning of kindness and care. I wanted to do more—to help
