Under a warm lamp, 37-year-old Ruan Xiyue carefully carves (雕刻) a child’s face onto a small egg-sized gourd (葫芦). Her skilled hands move slowly, bringing the small artwork to life.
Gourd carving is a famous traditional art in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu. With a history of over 1,000 years, it began during the Wei and Jin when gourds were used as wine pots on the Silk Road. Later, people started painting and carving on them, turning it into a special craft (手艺). By the Ming and Qing, it had become a way for artists to make a living.
Ruan Xiyue comes from a family of gourd carvers. For over 80 years, four generations (一代人) have kept this tradition alive. She has practiced for more than ten years, Unlike the older generations, Ruan prefers simple pictures. She believes traditional art should be part of daily life. “People should enjoy it at home, not just in museums,” she says.
To interest young people, Ruan adds modern touches to her work, such as cartoon characters and she also makes creative products like mirrors, bags, and tea cans. As a result, many students now visit her to learn gourd carving, with over 1,000 visitors each week.
Ruan’s mother, Ruan Lin, also helps by sharing the art on the Internet to reach more young learners. “Culture needs everyone’s effort,” she says. Together, they prove that traditional art can stay alive by connecting with modern life, passing beauty from generation to generation.

On 25 June, 2024, Li Chunlai watched eagerly as a capsule carrying the first pieces of the far side of the Moon landed on Earth. “Samples, I finally got you,” he thought. The lander spent two days digging and collecting material on the lunar surface before sending the samples back to Earth.
After arriving on Earth, the capsule was in Li’s lab at the National Astronomical Observatories in Beijing. It took Li and his team several days to get out the precious material from its sealed vault (密封舱), using various tools. To protect the material, they stored it in a nitrogen-filled (充满氮气的) box. The powder within was “fluffy” (松软的) and “very fresh”, says Li. The samples are lighter in colour than those from the Moon’s near side. “It’s very special,” says Li.
The rocks and dust were collected from the deepest part of the South Pole-Aitken Basin, which is thought to be the largest and oldest impact crater (撞击坑) on the Moon. The site was chosen because of the variety of the material it might contain. The samples are “like a recorder of all these historical events”, says Yi Xu, a planetary scientist at Macau University of Science and Technology. Studying them will help to uncover “lots of secrets of the Moon”, says Yuqi Qian, a planetary geologist at the University of Hong Kong.
Top among them is why the lunar far side looks so different from the near side— the crust (月壳) is thicker and not as enriched with radioactive elements (放射性元素). “Understanding the Moon’s history is key to learning about the pasts of other planets such as Mars, Venus and Mercury,” says James Head, a planetary geoscientist at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, who has collaborated extensively with Li. “The Moon is a keystone to planetary evolution (演化) in general.”
Planetary scientists all over the world now want to get their gloves on the samples. Li’s lab has distributed (分发) some pieces to teams across China. But it will be a few years before researchers outside the country get access, says Li, to give Chinese researchers priority. A flood of scientific findings are expected in the coming months. Li is already looking ahead to China’s next sample-return missions—to a near-Earth asteroid (近地小行星) in 2025, and to Mars several years later. “The insight generated so far from this year’s Moon mission,” he says, “is just the beginning”.
4.Why did scientists choose the South Pole-Aitken Basin to collect samples

My first photo was taken at the age of 9. While I couldn’t even remember the model of the camera, I do remember the enjoyment of looking through the photos.
When I was 16 years old, I bought a Canon camera before an overseas trip. Over the years I took many photos with it. There’s Aunt Sarah, smiling in front of Buckingham Palace; Aunt Sarah, smiling under the Eiffel Tower; and Aunt Sarah, smiling in a Venetian Canal. Everyone knows what Aunt Sarah looks like. They also know what Europe’s great landmarks (地标) look like. I didn’t think about composition (构图) when taking the photos.
After the camera was stolen, I didn’t buy one for a long time because I didn’t want to buy a complex (复杂的) camera until I found a Vivitar Series camera. It worked well in natural light, and I took a lot of photos with it. From then on, I had an artist’s eye. My pictures were not of familiar Greek architectures (建筑). Instead, I took pictures of farmers at work in the field and fishermen repairing their nets. I captured (抓住) the color and character of the country. My friends were so interested that they asked for more.
Of course, I won the first prize easily in some photo competitions. My friends often told me that I moved from an amateur to an artist.

Do you find it hard to learn math and history A recent study carried out by scientists from University of London, maybe of help to you. They found that teenagers could get higher marks in math if they studied in the morning and better grades in history if they were taught in the afternoon.
The researchers did a study at a secondary school in Bulgaria over nine years. The results showed that when teenagers had math classes earlier in the day, they scored on average (平均) 7 percent higher in tests than when taught in the afternoon. Lower-ability students did worst when they were studying math in the afternoon.
In history, students taught in the afternoon scored on average 6 percent higher than when they were taught in the morning. However, it doesn’t work for other subjects such as languages or geography.
Velichka Dimitrova, leader of the study, said the findings show that we do better at different times of the day. “In the morning, our brains are better and fresher, so we are better at doing something that repeats a lot like problem solving, where we require more speed and attention.” Dimitrova told The Telegraph.
“In the afternoon, it seems that this process (过程) slows down. On the other hand, history is better suitable for the afternoon, when we are more creative and open to discussion.” she said.
Subjects such as foreign languages require both memory and repetition (重复), and they also need people to be creative. This is perhaps why the time of day has no influence on learning. Time-of-day effects such as those are believed to be connected to the body clock. This is the system in our bodies that controls when we need to sleep.
Some schools in the US and the UK have tried out later school starting times for teenagers, whose body clocks change as they grow into adults.
Dimitrova believes schools should take this chance to improve students’ performance just by changing their timetables.

One night as I went to the supermarket to buy some groceries (日用品), something unusual happened to me. It made me review the meaning of life.
As soon as I went through the glass doors, I could tell something unusual was happening at the cash register (收银台). I saw a cashier taking a few items (物品) out of a customer’s bag. The shopper was an old woman. I couldn’t even begin to describe to you how sad this woman looked. I stood there for a second and quickly realized that the cashier was taking items off the bill to cut down the payment.
I walked quickly over to the cash register, pointed to the items that she was about to put behind her and then pointed at my bag, showing that I would pay for them. She understood. After putting those items back in the bag at the register, she again went to help the woman with her card, but it still didn’t work. I looked at the screen to see the number, took some cash out of my bag, handed it to the cashier and then quickly walked away.
The old woman was a bit nervous about her card and didn’t notice me at all. When the cashier told her that she didn’t have to pay a cent, she was confused (困惑的).
I didn’t walk back into the supermarket, but I felt so proud. I was really happy that I was able to help the old woman out and hopefully bring some joy and happiness into her life.
What is happiness As you can imagine, there are a lot of answers. Some people say that giving is a kind of happiness; it gives people warmth and joy. Some people say that harvest is a kind of happiness; it makes you realize the joy and excitement after the harvest. But I think helping others is a kind of happiness. It is the most valuable experience and it will always warm your heart.

Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. You are not able to do your best and keep up with all of your responsibilities unless you sleep well. Most experts agree that our bodies need eight hours of sleep every night, and this has been accepted as common knowledge for a long time. 27
I read an interesting article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students. 28 While most go to bed and get up at regular times, many are now waking up at night. It’s not because they need to use the bathroom or have a snack. It’s because of something new called FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
29 They’re scared of missing messages or fun group chats. But every time they do this, their deep sleep—the kind that repairs the body and brain—gets broken like a movie suddenly stopped. 30 The study found something even worse: Teens who check social media (社交媒体) at night are three times more likely to feel sad or worried compared to those who sleep through the night.
So, I’d like to ask you to be responsible for yourself. Take control! Turn off your mobile phones and computers at night. 31 I give you my word that you won’t have missed anything important.
A.As a result, they lose the most important hours of rest.
B.The world won’t end and your online friends will be waiting to greet you in the morning!
C.However, I was young once and I know that most of you get much less sleep than that.
D.Here’s what happens: Students wake up at night, often around 2 or 3 AM, to check their phones.
E.The research showed teenagers have a new challenge.

Most Chinese know the famous tale of Ne Zha. After his untimely death, the young hero has his body remade out of lotus root (莲藕). Today, the ancient story is brought back to life by a group of Chinese scientists.
For a long time, bone repairs have been quite painful and expensive. Doctors used steel pieces as a scaffold to hold the patient’s bone together. Once the bone grows back, they would need to take out the scaffold. Now, there is less trouble for the doctors and the patients. Dr. Jiang Xueyu and her research team at Wuhan Polytechnic University has managed to make a scaffold out of the fiber (纤维) from lotus root. The new scaffold is believed to be safer and more affordable for patients.
★ The most important quality is its “friendliness”. Our immune system (免疫系统) reacts badly to what it thinks to be foreign. That’s why if you have a heart problem, you can't just use any heart you find. Unlike a “foreign” heart, the fiber won’t be easily noticed by our system as “foreign”. Besides, it can last for the right time. The lotus fiber can hold up for 180 days-strong enough for the bone to grow back. When the bone has fully recovered, it will break down and disappear. So patients won’t need to have it taken out.
“We are not as magical as Tai Yi Zhen Ren so as to create life, but from the common lotus we managed to find power to help people.” Dr. Jiang said with a smile. The greatest technology can come from simple and imaginative ideas. Next time when you look into a bowl of delicious food or any daily things, a future scientific discovery probably lies within!

A.help patients B.cook food C.remake Ne Zha D.spread culture
36.A scaffold is something that _______.
A.causes a lot of pain B.holds heavy weights

C.The new scaffold is actually very expensive.
D.Doctors use the creation to treat heart disease.
38.What does Dr. Jiang stress in paragraph 4
A.Researchers are not able to do magic.
B.Creativity may make simple ideas valuable.
C.Many technologies also come from traditions.
D.Delicious food is important when creating life.
39.Which would be the best picture for the passage
