The upcoming winter season offers a selection of the finest, quickest, toughest and most delightful running events across the UK for those seeking adventure or community spirit.
● Bah Humbug 10K, 1 December
Do yourself a favour and bring towels and plastic bags with you, because every bit of gear you wear during this event is likely to be caked with mud by the end. Therefore, the organisers have done well to ensure there are changing rooms and showers available for all runners.
● Winter Solstice Strider, 8 December
Dig that head flashlight out of the messy drawer for this after - dark run or walk for a good cause. You have a 5K route, which winds through the forest at the St Ives Estate. The route is far from flat and will almost certainly be muddy in places, so make sure your batteries are well charged in case there are emergencies. sueryder.org
● The Christmas Charity Run, 21 December
This event is run by a local environmentally conscious organiser in the country, and is therefore only open to most runners to reduce car travel. Another great feature is that 7.50 of the 10 entry fee goes straight to a local charity that supports people with cancer, making this one of the most positive - impact events that you could possibly find. eventrac.co.uk
● Mapledurham 10& Half, 29 December
Mapledurham events are always well organised and, with unpleasant weather likely, you'll have to deal with some mud on the various uphills and downhills on whichever of the 10K, 10 - mile or half - marathon courses you choose. The organisers have prioritised finding a good route over precise measurements, so all three races have a rather loose relationship with their stated distance. mstevents.co.uk
21. Which website offers information for night run participants
A. sueryder.org B. C. eventrac.co.uk D. mstevents.co.uk
22. What makes the Mapledurham events unique
A. Eco - friendly goals. B. Flexible race distances.
C. Strong charity focus. D. Muddy running courses.
23. Which column of a magazine is the text probably from

Last weekend, I took my 2 - year - old grandson, Rio, to the park. My goal was to get him outside to burn some energy and teach him about the ducks. He had no goals. Two - year - olds don't need goals. That was the first lesson I learned that day.
He had a sense of wonder. As soon as we entered the park, he looked up at the sky and found joy in watching the clouds. Next, he stared at the trees, laughing as he tried to catch the rustling leaves. At that moment, nothing could have amused him more. His curiosity was constant, endless. He was always on the search for sticks. He scraped the ground with them, rapped a drumbeat with them on trees and benches, and waved them in the air like a flag. No thought of a stick being used as a weapon. No need for toys or electronic devices, unlike at home. Just sticks.
There were a few kids playing and a regular procession of people out for their morning dog walk. Rio said hi to everyone and stuck out his hand for a high - five with a few 4 - and - 5 - year - olds, who weren't sure how to respond. But they all said hi back. He tried to strike up conversations with enthusiasm. It was clear he didn't care what people looked like or how old they were. No judgment. No fear. Just a sincere desire to connect.
My biggest revelation was that Rio was fully present no matter what he was doing. He never asked what time it was, when we were leaving, or what we were going to do next. He was, every second, completely and absolutely in the moment.
I had expected to be the teacher, but I had it backward. My grandson helped me remember things we're born knowing but forget in the process of becoming an adult.
24. What was the author's first lesson at the park
A. The park was ideal for teaching.
B. planned activities bored children.
C. His plan didn't fit a child's nature.
D. His goals were not clear enough.
25. Why did the author describe how Rio played with sticks
A. To list all possible stick functions.
B. To warn about the dangers of sticks.
C. To show Rio's wonder and creativity.
D. To compare sticks with electronic devices.
26. What can be inferred about Rio from paragraph 3
A. He was too young to respond properly.
B. He preferred talking to children of his age.
C. He greeted others to seek positive feedback.
D. He was open to connections with others.
27. What does the author's experience show
A. The value of family outings. B. The lost wisdom of living.
C. The harm of setting goals. D. The way to develop curiosity.

Last fall, Joshua Barbeau, a freelance writer, logged onto a mysterious website called Project December. For years, Joshua had struggled with the lingering sorrow of losing his wife, Jessica, who died eight years ago.
Project December, powered by an advanced AI, can mimic (模仿) almost any writing style. By providing the AI with specific samples of a person's speech, it can conduct
human - like conversations. Driven by a mixture of curiosity and desperate longing, Joshua built an AI version of Jessica using her old texts. The initial interaction sent a shiver through his soul. The chatbot captured Jessica’s unique voice, even her habit of using jokes to soften serious statements. For months, it served as a shelter where Joshua could finally unburden his long - buried sorrow.
Yet the experience had a painful limit. Each chatbot had a fixed lifespan and would disappear permanently once its set time ended. Joshua realized that the digital version of Jessica would “die” as well, but he determined never to “reboot” her, fearing that treating her like a restartable video game would cheapen the experience. Fearing another loss, he limited his conversations with the chatbot, returning only briefly on special occasions, say, Jessica’s birthday. Despite occasional errors and confusion in the chatbot’s responses, Joshua did not feel disappointed. Instead, these moments reminded him of Jessica’s final days, when illness had clouded her memory. He corrected the chatbot gently, just as he once had in real life.
In the months that followed, he’d felt calmer and more optimistic. The chatbot did not erase his sorrow or solve all his problems, but it offered emotional release and gentle encouragement. The survivor’s guilt that had weighed on him for years gradually loosened its hold, and most of the time, he no longer felt selfish for seeking happiness. For Joshua, the chat logs preserved the spark of his beloved, offering a long - awaited chance to say goodbye.
28. Why did Joshua create the chatbot
A. To test the technical boundaries of AI.
B. To reconnect emotionally with his wife.
C. To prove AI’s generative competence.
D. To preserve the digital records of his wife.
29. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. AI’s occasional faults depressed Joshua.
B. Joshua planned to create a new chatbot later.
C. Joshua wanted to prolong the chatbot’s company.
D. The technical errors made the experience less real.
30. What impact did the chatbot have on Joshua over time
A. He was lost in the virtual world.
B. He completely got rid of his sadness.
C. He managed to find a new wife.
D. He felt more composed and positive.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A Digital Reunion with a Lost Love
B. A Romantic Memory of a Late Wife
C. Digital Echoes: How to Build an AI Companion
D. Project December: A Platform for Programmers
D
Tired of standing in line Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again. Everyone from Amazon to Silicon Valley start - ups is trying to eliminate lines in retail (零售) stores.
Amazon has opened 24 of its Amazon Go stores, which use cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to see what you’ve taken off shelves and charge you as you walk out. Some start - ups are closely copying Amazon’s approach to using AI - powered cameras fixed in ceilings. But others are trying an entirely different way to skip the checkout: smart shopping carts. These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve placed in them. A built - in scale weighs items, in case you have to pay by the pound for an item. Customers pay by using a credit card, or through an online payment
system. When customers exit the store, a green light on the shopping cart indicates that their orders are complete, and they're charged.
The start - ups behind the smart shopping carts, including Caper and Veeve, say it's much easier to add technology to the shopping cart than to an entire store. Amazon Go stores rely on hundreds of cameras in the ceiling. The shelves also include sensors to tell when an item is removed. Ahmed Beshry, co - founder of Caper, believes the technology to run Amazon Go is too expensive to use in a large grocery store. Neither Caper nor Veeve has said how much their smart shopping carts will cost, making it difficult to compare the different formats. Shariq Siddiqui, CEO of Veeve, said he's finding increased interest from retailers given Amazon's steady expansion of Amazon Go since the first Amazon Go store opened in Seattle in 2018. "We're always happy when Amazon is doing something," Siddiqui said. "They force retailers to get out of their old - school thinking."
Each time a business uses artificial intelligence and cameras, it raises questions about customer privacy and the impact on jobs. Beshry notes that the cameras in his smart shopping cart point down into the cart, so only customers' hands and part of their arms will be captured (拍摄) by cameras.
32. Which of the following best explains "eliminate" underlined in paragraph 1
A. Shift. B. Break. C. Extend. D. Remove.
33. What do we know about the smart shopping carts
A. They are linked to the cameras fixed in the ceilings.
B. They are able to recognize purchases placed in them.
C. They flash the green light when the order is canceled.
D. They can tell customers where to find what they want.
34. What does Beshry think of the technology applied in Amazon Go stores
A. It is far more expensive than their smart shopping carts.
B. It has attracted many more retailers than before.
C. It may increase the cost of running a large grocery store greatly.
D. It is likely to help retailers to think differently.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The New Technology Promotes Retail Sales
B. AI - powered Cameras Are Used in Retail Stores
C. Artificial Intelligence Affects the Future Job Market
D. Smart Shopping Carts Will Let You Skip the Line

Just like the United States, Britain is divided into different areas. Britain is one of the most diverse nations in Europe with over 250 different languages being spoken in London alone. With such a various culture, adapting to it can be a challenge for anyone. 36
Forget the stereotypes (老套). Many of the long - formed stereotypes simply have nothing to do with Britain today. Don't think that everyone enjoys drinking tea or beer. Abandoning some old ideas of people and culture will allow you to be more open - minded and easily get into the culture.
37 Britain is made up of different regions that have their different traditions and languages. Understanding different cultures will help you avoid making mistakes.
Get used to small spaces. The US is a huge country where we are used to bigger cars, houses and spaces. Like all European nations, Britain does not have the luxury of space. Houses, apartments and cars are all smaller than you are used to. 38
39 Always apologize for knocking into someone, even if it was their fault. Respect people's personal space and always wait in line. Bill Brysons' book Notes from a Small Island is filled with many useful tips.
Accept the jokes. 40 Kidding, teasing, or "taking the mick" are all ways to describe making fun of someone but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Playing tricks on someone is a common way to show affection. As Britons usually put it, "You never make fun of someone you don't like".
A. Be polite.
B. Make friends with them.
C. Don't play jokes on others.
D. Understand the differences.
E. Following these steps should be of great help to you.
F. One of the most confusing aspects of British culture is humour.

Alex and Ben had been best friends since kindergarten. They shared everything, from snacks to secrets, and especially their passion for photography. Ben had saved up every penny from his allowance for a whole year to buy a professional camera, which quickly became his most prized possession — he even kept it in a soft case and cleaned the lens (镜片) every single day.
One weekend, Alex asked to borrow the camera for a school photography contest. Ben hesitated for a second, his fingers brushing the camera’s case softly, but then he smiled and handed it over, saying sincerely, “Please be careful. It’s my baby.”
Excited beyond words, Alex took the camera on a hiking trip to a remote mountain, determined to get the perfect shot of a hidden waterfall at sunrise. The trail was damp (潮湿的) and muddy after the previous night’s rain. As he climbed a slippery rock to get a better shot, his foot suddenly slipped. He waved his arms and managed to grab a tree branch to save himself, but the camera swung wildly from his hand and crashed against a sharp stone. When he picked it up, his heart sank — the lens was completely broken.
Panic set in instantly. Alex stood frozen on the rock, his hands trembling as he stared at the broken camera. He knew exactly how much this camera meant to Ben. It was more than just a camera; it was the fruit of a year’s worth of patience and hard work. Instead of gathering his courage to tell Ben the truth immediately, Alex chose to run away from the problem. He avoided Ben at school, didn’t answer any of his calls or text messages, and even skipped their usual lunch meetups at the cafeteria, where they used to sit together and talk about their latest photos.
注意:(1)续写词数应为 150 个左右;
Days turned into weeks, the secret made Alex feel worse.
Alex walked to Ben’s house, holding the damaged camera in his hands.

A Book That Left A Deep Impression
I'm Li Jin from Chenguang Middle School. Among all the books I've read, the one that left a deep impression on me is The Old Man and the Sea, written by Ernest Hemingway, a well - known American writer. It's a classic novel.
The story is about an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago. After going 84 days without catching a fish, he finally hooks a huge marlin. Despite great difficulties and the marlin's strong resistance, he struggles with it for days and nights. Eventually he catches the marlin but on his way back, sharks attack and eat most of it. What remains is just a skeleton.
I highly recommend this book because it teaches me a valuable lesson. Although Santiago doesn't bring back a complete fish, his spirit of never giving up in the face of hardship deeply inspires me. Whenever I encounter difficulties, I'll think of him and gain the courage to move on.
Days turned into weeks, the secret made Alex feel worse. He couldn’t focus on his studies, and every time he went into the hallway, he ducked into the nearest classroom. He realized that his silence was likely hurting his friendship more than the accident ever could. The camera was just an object, expensive as it was, but Ben’s trust was irreplaceable. The weight of the secret was crushing him. He knew he had to face the consequences. He decided he couldn’t be a shadow anymore.
Alex walked to Ben’s house, holding the damaged camera in his hands. When Ben opened the door, his expression changed from confusion to relief. “I thought you were angry with me! Why have you been ignoring me all this time ” he shouted. Alex held out the broken lens, tears stinging his eyes, and he explained everything—the lie, the fear, and the shame. To his surprise, Ben didn’t yell. He looked at the camera, then at Alex, and smiled gently. “Come on in and fix it, Alex,” he said, patting Alex’s shoulder. “But I was worried I’d do more damage!” Alex explained. They spent the afternoon fixing up the camera, their friendship stronger than before.

根据文章第一段“My goal was to get him outside to burn some energy and teach him abouttred ucks. 5.推理判断题.根据文章第二段“He had a sense of wonder. As soon as we entered the park, he looked up atthes kya ndf oundj oy i nwa tchi ngt hec l auds. Next, hes tar eda tthe t r ees, laughing as he tried to catch the rustling leaves. Atthatmo me nt, not hi ngc oul d have ma dehi m more. His curiosity was constant, endless. 6.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Rio said hi to everyone and stuck out his hand for a high-fie with a few 4-and5-year-olds, who weren't sure how to respond. Butthey a lsa i di back. 7. 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“I had expected to be the teacher, but I had it backward. My grandson helped me remember things we're born knowing butfor getin th qpr ocess oftec oni ng an adult.(我本以为自己是那个施教的人,结果却恰恰相反。我的小孙子,让我记起了那些我们生来就懂,却在长大成人的过程中渐渐遗忘的本心与道理。)”以及上文提到的 Rio 展现的活在当下、对世界满怀好奇、真诚无芥蒂地与人联结等特质可知,作者的这段经历,核心是从孙子身上重拾了那些人类生来就懂,却在长大成人的过程中逐渐遗忘的生活智慧,也让作者体会到了这份遗失的智慧的珍贵。故选 B。

Fearing another loss, he limited his conversations with the chatbot, returning only brief responses on special occasions, say, Jessica's birthday.
根据最后一段“In the months that followed, he'd feel calmer and more optimistic. ( 在接下来的几个月里,他感到更加平静和乐观。)”可知,聊天机器人对约书亚的影响是他感到更加镇定和积极。故选D。
11.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“Driven by a mixture of curiosity and desperate longing, Joshua built an AI version of Jessica using her old texts. The initial interactions sent a shiver through his soul. The chatbot captured Jessica's unique voice, even her habit of using jokes to soften serious statements. For months, it served as a shelter where he could finally unburden his long - buried sorrow. 故选A。
