A group of six women decided to climb Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. They wanted to show their physical condition to people. The women had albinism(白化病). One of the main signs of albinism is lighter-than-usual skin(皮肤) colour. Other signs include white hair and pink eyes.
All the climbers said they had been looked down upon because of their albinism. In some countries, if women give birth to babies with albinism, they will be driven out by their family. Sometimes parents don't accept children with albinism. People abominate children and adults with albinism. Nodumo Ncomanzi, one of the climbers, said, “Students laughed at me at school.” Even with these problems, Ncomanzi graduated from Yale University in the US and now works on education.
Mount Kilimanjaro is 5,895 metres high and it is difficult for everyone to climb it. Four of the climbers reached a camp at 4,700 metres, and they decided to stop on medical advice. The other two, Ncomanzi and Waithera, continued to climb. But Waithera had to stop 20 metres from the top because of sore knees. So in the end, Ncomanzi was the only one to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro on 7 October, 2018. The team hoped that their climb could help change the world's wrong opinion on people with albinism.
