单词重读
当一个单词在句子中被重读时，它通常承载着重要的信息。例如，在句子“She bought a new dress.”中，“bought”被重读，强调了动作“买”这一关键信息，让听者明白这个动作是句子的核心内容。
又如，“I want to go to Paris.”这里“Paris”重读，突出了目的地，让听者知道说话者想去的地方是巴黎。
节奏 rhythm
英语是一种节奏较强的语言。英语句子中有的词重读，有的词不重读。英语单词中有重读音节和非重读音节，重读音节需要读得响亮些，发音更长些，而非重读音节需要读得轻快些。这样，重读和非重读音节在句中形成一强一弱或一重一轻的变化，这样就形成了英语的节奏。
英语句子中的一个重读音节与其后若干非重读音节组成一个节奏组，即一拍。英语歌谣、歌曲、诗歌一般节奏明快，非常适合训练节奏。
英语节奏有重音等时的特点，即两个重读音节中的间隔时长大致相同。因此若两个重读音节间所包含的非重读音节少，则重读音节的元音就得读得比较慢，若所包含的非重读音节多，则重读音节的元音读得会相对短些，同时非重读音节读得更快。我们前面所学的连读、弱读、同化就是为提高语速，使语言更加流畅服务的。
