第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
North Cascades National Park
A breathtaking landscape of towering peaks, evergreen forests, glacier-fed rivers, and clear lakes, North Cascades National Park in northwestern Washington State preserves some of the wildest and most charming places in the United States. Far more than just a national park, it’s part of a 684,000-acre complex that also includes two national recreation areas and is managed entirely by the U.S. National Park Service.
Best times to visit North Cascades National Park
Every season has its beauty in the park, but not every part of the park is open year-round. Heavy snow typically closes much of the North Cascades Highway (State Route 20) across the mountains from November or December to April or May. Consult the park’s website for current road conditions before visiting.
Areas at lower elevations (海拔) become accessible as spring advances, but summer and early fall are the best times to visit for snow-free trails and access to the high country. As temperatures become warm and snow melts, wildflowers appear. At lower elevation, flowers typically begin to blossom in early spring.
Where to find the best views in the park
The North Cascades Highway is arguably one of the most beautiful drives in the United States, climbing from near sea level in the west to 1,669 meters. It follows the Skagit River and a string of alpine lakes and rivers. Along the way, Diablo Lake and Ross Lake overlooks provide amazing views, while other stops along the highway offer easy access to some scenic spots.
How accessible is the park
As a wilderness park North Cascades National Park contains many remote locations with often challenging terrain (地形). However, park visitor and information centers are fully accessible. There’s a flat boardwalk and several low-grade, smooth-surfaced trails near the visitor center, as well as the 1/3-mile Happy Creek Forest Walk near milepost 135.
21. What makes North Cascades National Park well known
A. Its rich wildlife species. B. Its spacious recreation areas.
C. Its long scenic highway. D. Its dramatic mountain scenery.
22. When is the best time to visit North Cascades National Park
A. Early spring. B. Early autumn. C. Late autumn. D. Midwinter.
23. What do we know about the visitor center
A. It is easily accessible. B. It closes in winter.
C. It sits by a highway. D. It lies in remote areas.

Marianne North was an early female explorer, naturalist and painter. She traveled around the world, painting plants, people and places. She left an extraordinary legacy behind.
Marianne looked after and traveled with her father for much of her life. After his death in1869, Marianne, financially independent at the age of forty, set off alone to explore and paint the world.
During her long artistic journey around the world, Marianne displayed impressive courage and determination. Faced with numerous challenges in her pursuits, Marianne proved unaffected and would laugh it off. In Italy, when her landlord pretended he had no rooms for them except those on the fifth floor, Marianne fearlessly responded with “so to the fifth we went, and gained all the better view”.
Marianne’s most famous supporter was Charles Darwin. Darwin’s power of bringing out other people’s best points extended to Marianne whom he advised to see and paint the Australian vegetation (植被) which was unlike that of any other country. Taking Darwin’s advice as a royal command, she went at once and eagerly returned in 1881 to sit with Darwin and his children under a shady tree to look closely at her paintings together.
Marianne’s paintings and writing give detailed information on the location, habitat and uses of many of the plants she painted. On her travels, she collected and discovered plants that were new to botanical science at the time. A pitcher plant she painted in Borneo, for example, was unknown to science at the time she painted it. When botanists saw it, the painting caused great excitement. Through her art, she sought to inspire and educate people about the natural world.
24. What made Marianne’s traveling around the world at forty possible
A. Personal fame. B. Family support.
C Financial freedom. D. Darwin’s advice.
25. What does the author show by mentioning the event in Italy
A. Marianne’s painting skills. B. Marianne’s sense of humor.
C. Marianne’s physical strength. D. Marianne’s positive attitude.
26. How did Marianne react to Darwin’s suggestion
A. She followed it immediately. B. She considered it a great honor.
C. She discussed it with his children. D. She improved her techniques first.
27. What can we infer about Marianne’s painting of the pitcher plant
A. It was her most famous work. B. It helped identify a new species.
C. It was painted to attract botanists. D. It proved her exceptional painting skills.

Scientists have discovered six species of cushion (垫) plants growing at a record-breaking height on Mount Shukule Ⅱ in the Ladakh region of India. These plants were found on a small, rocky area no larger than a football field, and they are more resistant to cold and dry conditions than most plants.
The research team, led by Jiri Dolezal from the Czech Academy of Sciences, studied how plants respond to climate warming in this remote area. Reaching the site required a five-day journey from the nearest road, and the scientists suffered from sickness and extreme tiredness.
In contrast, the plants themselves were well adapted to the cold and dry environment. Each plant was very small, about the size of a coin, and contained a high amount of sugar that acted like natural antifreeze. Their leaves grew in a circular shape, helping them trap warm air and survive long, freezing winters. Although their roots were tiny, one root showed about 20 growth rings, suggesting that the plant had survived there for nearly two decades.
Climate change has warmed the Himalayas, allowing plants to grow higher as glaciers (冰川) retreat. Dolezal estimates that during the short growing season, temperatures in this area have risen by about 6℃ over the past decade. Plants need at least 40 frost-free days each year to grow, and such conditions are now appearing in the Himalayas.
“I’m surprised at the elevation — it’s very high,” says Jan Salick, a botanist at Missouri Botanical Garden in St Louis. But she is encouraged that plants may be able to move to higher altitudes than previously thought, and keep up with climate change.
As part of the research, she has found alpine (高山的) plants in the Himalayas moving upwards at 0.06 metres a year, while the temperature band they usually occupy is outpacing them by rising at 6 metres a year. The fear is that the temperature increase is encouraging the tree line to rise too, which could reduce the space available for alpine plants.
28. What is a feature of the cushion plants
A. They depend on the fairly fertile soil. B. They spread widely across the mountain.
C. They can tolerate cold and dryness. D. They grow faster than other alpine plants.
29. What does the author intend to illustrate about the cushion plants in paragraph 3
A. How scientists discovered their habitat. B. How they survive in the tough conditions.
C. How climate change impacts their distribution. D. How they pose a threat to local species.
30. Why are plants likely to grow even higher in the Himalayas
A. Seeds are spreading more easily.
B. Mountain soils are becoming richer.
C. Their frost-free growing periods are extending.
D. Glaciers at the height are appearing in large numbers.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Climate Change Helps Plants Grow Higher
B. Record-breaking Plants Were Found in the Himalayas
C. Cushion Plants Are the Most Resistant Plants in the World
D. Alpine Plants Face a Serious Survival Problem in the Himalayas

Elaine recently bought a gorgeous stained-glass statement mirror on an online marketplace, and then she found she was rearranging her entire bedroom to match its luxurious aesthetic (美感) and color scheme. She didn’t have a bedroom redesign in her budget, but that wasn’t stopping her. Have you ever updated one thing in your home and suddenly found yourself with a laundry list of changes you want to make This phenomenon is called the Diderot Effect.
The phenomenon got its name from French philosopher Denis Diderot. In 1769, Diderot penned an essay describing the receipt of a new dressing gown, which sparked a series of impulsive (易冲动的) purchases that sank him into debt — and thus lending his name to this psychological phenomenon.
This isn’t just a consequence of 18th-century behavior, though. The Diderot effect is alive and well today. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fall victim to the Diderot effect. Psychotherapist Dr. Daryl Appleton says it’s a very human response, similar to the feeling when you put on brand-new clothes, but then wear your worn-out shoes — the mismatch is uncomfortable. What’s happening beneath the surface is partly neurological (神经学的). When we seek something new, our brain releases more dopamine, often called our “pleasure chemical” that drives desire. So, that rush you feel when you start fixing the things around the shiny new object is not just aesthetics; it’s brain chemistry. We’re born to long for novel things.
The Diderot Effect can show up anywhere from your closet to your career. Therapist Dr. Alfonso Ferguson says, “Often, what’s really happening underneath is a desire to feel in harmony with one’s space — to finally feel a sense of pride, peace, or even safety that may have been missing in other parts of life.” It’s not always a bad thing to want your space to progress with you. But if it starts to feel compulsive, it can be pretty difficult to escape the cycle. You’ll keep chasing the next upgrade.
32. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A. To analyse reasons.
B. To make a comparison.
C. To lead in the topic.
D. To present viewpoints.
33. What is the motivation behind the Diderot Effect according to paragraph 3
A. An attempt to escape stress from one’s work.
B. A desire to achieve harmony in one’s life.
C. A rush to show off one’s wealth.
D. A biological urge to seek novelty.
34. What does the underlined word “compulsive” in the last paragraph mean
A. Unrealistic.
B. Uncontrollable.
C. Adaptable.
D. Casual.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. When One New Thing Changes Everything
B. The Psychology Behind Chasing Harmony
C. How Our Daily Needs Help Fuel Endless Purchase
D. The Science of Holding Back Endless Consumption

Before the cooking competition began, I felt nervous and unsure of my abilities. Most importantly, I was worried about performing poorly. Fortunately, my classmate Anna kindly offered to help me prepare. After school, we spent several hours together in the kitchen, practicing my recipe over and over again. She guided me patiently, showing me how to chop vegetables evenly, cook the pasta (意大利面食) perfectly, and mix the ingredients carefully. She even gave me tips on how to make the salad look more appealing on the plate by arranging colors and shapes neatly. Her encouragement and advice made me feel more confident and make much progress.
Every weekend, for a whole month, we got up early so that we could have enough time to practice and we followed the same routine to prepare for the competition. In the beginning, we carefully selected the freshest vegetables from the market, checking each carrot, cucumber, and lettuce leaf for quality. Anna reminded me to time every step perfectly, so the pasta would not be overcooked and the vegetables would remain crisp and fresh. We also practiced plating the salad neatly, arranging the colors and shapes to make it look attractive, because presentation was just as important as taste. Each rehearsal made me feel more confident and ready. And by the night before the competition, I was nervous but also excited to show what we had learned.
On the day of the contest, standing at the center of the bustling school campus, I felt the crowd’s eyes on me and my anxiety returned immediately. The tables were neatly arranged with all the ingredients we would need, while students from other classes moved quickly, chopping, stirring, and plating with confidence. At first, I hesitated, afraid of making mistakes in front of so many people and worried that my pasta salad would not turn out well. My hands trembled slightly as I picked up the knife.
