Environmental groups have claimed success after bringing local wildlife back to Hackney Marshes in East London following the destruction of habitats in recent years.
Weasels (鼬), wood mice and other small mammals (哺乳动物) had been disappearing from around the River Lea until hundreds of volunteers began rebuilding their ecosystems. All he volunteers had been on edge realizing the increasingly urgent problem. Now, all paid off. Ian Phillips, an ecologist as well as one of the volunteers, said, “It finally happened. It was absolutely a comfort and pleasure to see everything fall into place.”
With funding from Hackney Council, the mission was undertaken. Mr. Phillips explained wood mice’s disappearing caused a chain reaction. Weasels left the habitat, and that in turn impacted the population of a type of local bind, “It’s like a classic sort of building block game — if you pull any piece out of the local ecosystem, everything can collapse,” he said. “So three years ago, when we realized we were at a critical point, we took it upon ourselves to do something.”
The departure of wildlife resulted mainly from larger numbers of visitors and houseboaters taking logs from the area to use for firewood. While these gatherings made the headlines, the loud noise and log burning caused great disturbance to local species, driving kingfishers and small birds to abandon their nests. A rise in dog ownership also posed a threat to Hackney Marshes’ mammals. “When you’ve got 3,000 dogs coming through here a day sometimes, there’s going to be death,” Mr. Philips added.
This project shows what can be done with local knowledge and devotion in partnership with the council. The rewilders said they’re working to expand their efforts across the region into Millfields Park and London Fields. They are also actively training council staff to help them recover species in the wider area. Meanwhile, Hackney Council has given them the green light to introduce other species like slow worms into Hackney Marshes.
4. How did Phillips’ feeling change
A. From doubtful to proud. B. From alarmed to astonished.
C. From helpless to hopeful. D. From pressured to relieved.
5. What do Phillips’ words imply in paragraph 3
A. Wood mice will disappear completely. B. The ecosystem has been unstable.
C. Every species in the ecosystem is vital. D. Their success relies on a joint effort.
6. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4
A. Causes of the disappearance of wildlife. B. Biological diversity in Hackney Marshes.
C. Death threat from dogs to local mammals. D. Conflicts between tourism and conservation.
7. What are the rewilders attempting to do
A. Gain support of the local council. B. Educate the public on wildlife protection.
C. Restore biodiversity in more areas. D. Monitor the foreign species in the region.

The ability to think about what others are thinking, known as “theory of mind”, is a crucial aspect of human interaction and cooperation. Scientists have long been intrigued if animals share this capability. Recent studies suggest that some animals, particularly great apes like chimpanzees and bonobos (倭黑猩猩), might possess this skill.
A notable experiment conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University’s Ape Initiative provides convincing evidence. The study involved three male bonobos, who were taught to communicate using signs or symbols. These apes are known for their intelligence and cooperative problem-solving skills.
In the experiment, scientist Luke Townrow sat across from a bonobo while another scientist hid a small snack under one of three inverted (使倒置) cups. The bonobo witnessed the hiding process but Mr Townrow was only able to see the cups half the time. When Mr Townrow couldn’t see where the snack was hidden, he would act confused and ask, “Hmm, where is the grape ” before waiting for 10 seconds.
The results showed that when Mr Townrow lacked knowledge of the snack’s location, the bonobos pointed to the correct cup more quickly and frequently. This behaviour indicates that the bonobos were aware of Mr Townrow’s knowledge state and adapted their responses accordingly.
While the study had limitations—such as the small number of bonobos and the possibility that their upbringing around humans influenced their behaviour—the findings are significant. They suggest that bonobos indeed have a theory of mind, allowing them to consider others’ thoughts and adjust their actions based on what they know others do not.
This discovery enhances our understanding of animal cognition (认知) and social behaviour. It implies that the ability to think about others’ thoughts, once thought to be uniquely human, may be more widespread in the animal kingdom than previously believed. Further research with larger groups and wild bonobos could provide deeper insights into the extent and evolution of this cognitive ability in animals.
8. What does the underlined word "intrigued" in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Curious. B. Worried. C. Unconcerned. D. Amazed.
9. What does Paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. The effect of the experiment. B. The process of the experiment.
C. The purpose of the experiment. D. The principle of the experiment.
10. What is the result of the experiment
A. All animals have cognitive ability.
B. Bonobos can be trained to communicate freely.
C. Bonobos have a theory of mind similar to humans.
D. Scientist Luke Townrow is skilled in confusing bonobos.
11. What may scientists view the experiment as
A. A morally questionable experiment.
B. A definitive conclusion of the study.
C. A time-consuming and cost-effective trial.
D. A starting point for future investigations.
D
“My enthusiasm for this job is totally gone,” an Amazon worker recently wrote on Blind, an online forum where employees complain about their employers. All this happened after Andy Jassy, the tech giant’s boss, sent a letter that ordered staff back to the office five days a week instead of the previous three days.
Amazon isn’t alone to limit remote work. A recent global survey by KPMG, another professional-services firm, found that four-fifths of bosses expect a return to the office five days a week within three years. The change in some tech, financial and professional-services firms is more dramatic.
Ordering a return to the office tends to anger staff. A survey by Gartner, a research firm, found that a fifth of employees would leave their jobs if they were forced back to the office. For some companies, that may be the point. Getting some of them to leave voluntarily would reduce costs, though it also risks losing talented employees.
Many bosses believe having employees in the office leads to better performance. Plenty of studies suggest that remote employees are less productive. There’s less evidence, though, that letting staff work from home a couple of days a week has a negative effect on performance. A random trial at an online travel agency by Nick Bloom of Stanford University found no difference in performance between hybrid workers and those who worked entirely from the office.
Bosses may argue that complex tasks, such as designing a user interface, can require a lot of cooperation that may be difficult to perform virtually. Junior employees may also receive less coaching if they interact with others from home. Some bosses argue that this will harm their company’s culture, as new employees don’t absorb it and old ones forget it. Mr. Jassy wrote that Amazon’s culture has been one of the most critical parts of its success, and that it’s easier for our teammates to learn, practise, and strengthen it when working together in the office.
For now, investors seem to be withholding judgment. If Mr. Jassy is right, that may soon change.
12. What did the Amazon worker complain about on Blind
A. The increase in remote work hours. B. The shift in the company’s leadership.
C. The requirement of the five-day office work. D. The lack of opportunities for advancement.
13. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Office work is always more productive. B. Hybrid work is the best for all companies.
C. Remote work leads to a lack of enthusiasm. D. The effect of work mode on productivity isn’t clear-cut.
14. What’s Jassy’s attitude towards ordering employees to return to the office
A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Reserved. D. Indifferent.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Limit Work Days to Promote Productivity
B. Know Corporate Culture via Remote Work
C. Obey the Order and Stop Making Complaints
D. Get Prepared to Go back to the Office to Work

We get frustrated all the time. The line won’t move. The WiFi won’t work. From life’s biggest goals to its tiniest annoyances, frustration is in our daily life.
____16____ Unlike anger, which often targets an external cause, or stress which can arise from too many demands, frustration happens when things are not progressing in the way you anticipate. Now scientists are uncovering its surprising upside. Frustration can be transformed into motivation, pushing people to optimize solutions to overcome difficulties. So how can we employ the unexpected upsides of feeling frustrated
·____17____
Instead of seeing frustration as failure, view it as evidence that you’re being challenged at the right level. For example, academic tests will grow more difficult as you perform better — that’s because you are good enough. ____18____
·Acknowledge obstacles to be functional.
The first step is being aware that everything has roadblocks — work, learning a new hobby, or even re-learning the skill you once mastered. Frustration is an input to (not a side effect of) our pursuits. ____19____ If you know this in advance, you will anticipate obstacles, which can motivate self-growth, especially when you are told they are necessary parts of progress.
·Analyze the signal from the situation.
When faced with frustration, try to analyze the signal conveyed by the situation. This initial analysis helps you avoid being overwhelmed by negative emotions. ____20____ In this way, frustration is no longer a roadblock but a stepping stone toward personal growth.
Keep in mind that by reflecting on the obstacles, learning from the experience and applying the gained knowledge to subsequent challenges, you can truly benefit from frustration.
A Look on frustration from a different angle.
B. Regard frustration as an academic challenge.
C. There is a reason for the existence of frustration.
D. Furthermore, you will center on practical solutions.
E. On a regular basis, it’s not going to get you to feel right at first.
F. Therefore, such a struggle isn’t a setback but proof of personal growth.
G. In short, frustration is of vital significance in developing our hands-on ability.

After six hours of fishing, John Franklin and his sister Jane were ready to call it a day. It was 7 pm. The summer sun was setting, and the fishes had stopped biting. But Jane’s 12-year-old son Conrad was having so much fun that he begged “Let’s do just one more run,” Since the mild weather was holding out, why not John turned the boat around and headed back.
Yet, you never knew. They hadn’t even cast their lines when the wind picked up suddenly. Rough waves began battling against the little boat. “Check your life jackets and hold the boat!” John shouted, As Jane and her son were on the point of screaming, two big waves rolled over, one right after the other. Within a few seconds, the boat tipped(倾斜). Backward and turned over, throwing three of them into the water.
Out of the worst, the luckiest thing was that they had life jackets on and the boat didn’t sink immediately. Everyone grabbed onto it. “Let’s get back in the boat, Mommy,” Conrad cried, trembling with fear.
“Don’t panic. People know we’re out here,” Jane comforted him. “They’ll send help soon.”
Treading(踩) the water, the adults exchanged worried looks. They were floating in the middle of nowhere. “I knew we were in a tight spot,” said John, a third-generation commercial fisherman who, like Jane, had been raised on the bay.
When a strong wind blew through about half an hour with no sign of dying down, they had to make some decisions. It had been a perfect July day, with the water at a temperate 20 degrees centigrade, but everyone was cold by 9 pm.
If they weren’t rescued soon, they might not survive the night, John recognized, but the closest shoreline was about three miles away, starred by only a few glowing house lights.
