This summer, I came face-to-face with three deep-rooted fears: heights, bears, and aging. For years, these worries had stayed in my mind, but this trip finally gave me the courage to face them directly.
Two friends joined me on a four-day wilderness getaway, and since we were all in our seventies, we decided we'd better go while we still could. We hoped the trip would not only bring us joy but also help us break through our own limits. Our adventure began with a scary drive up a winding mountain road, which made us hold our breath all the way.
On one hike, I found myself hanging onto a wire on a bridge made of two partly rotten logs, suspended high above rushing rapids(湍流). The wind blew strongly, and the bridge shook slightly, making me feel extremely nervous. I would never have attempted it without our guide ahead, mouthing encouraging words. Fixing my eyes on her boots, Iinched along the shaky logs. Somehow, I made it across, flooded with a rush of intense excitement and huge relief.
Later, after spotting bear tracks, we were told to make loud noises, which soon became a game once the tension faded. We talked and laughed, thinking the danger had passed.
Until suddenly, time stood still.
We had just crossed a stream when the guide whispered,“There's a bear”. I looked up in disbelief and saw not one, but two, about ten meters above us—— the brown mother in front, her cub behind.
Though scared speechless, I couldn't help noticing how beautiful they looked in their natural setting. I wondered if it would be my last memory. As they started towards us, we recovered enough to shout and wave our hiking poles. Taken aback, they stopped, and then slowly turned away. Another fear was overcome!
On our final morning, after a quiet, thoughtful walk through the forest, we were asked to bring back a“meaningful” stick, rock, and leaf to share what would“stick” with us, what“rocked”, and what we would“leave behind”. The bond of friendship would stick with me. Women supporting one another truly rocked. And I hoped to leave some fears behind.
Our guide ended by expressing her admiration, praising not only our fitness but also our positive attitude. Those unexpected words warmed my heart and eased my fear of being“over the hill”. Being valued for what we had accomplished made this trip the most unforgettable experience in my life.

A. To reflect on the journey. B. To pick up some souvenirs.
C. To symbolize their teamwork. D. To check their observation skills.
44. The underlined phrase“over the hill” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to

New research suggests that pandas may be at risk of dying out because they are too comfortable. Experts say too much happiness can stop the bears from searching for new mates, leading to a decline in genetic diversity that is crucial for long-term survival.
Environmentalists have long believed that building roads or homes near the bears may threaten their survival by“reducing or fragmenting(分裂) their natural habitats”,The Times reported. But the new research challenges this assumption, suggesting that a“modest degree of discomfort and fragmentation” may actually help preserve panda populations.
The research was conducted by scientists from Michigan State University. It concluded that pandas fail to wander off in search of new mates if they find their habitat too comfortable, resulting in a lack of vital genetic diversity. When pandas become too content in an unspoiled environment, they tend to stay put, leading to inbreeding and a weakened gene pool. This lack of genetic exchange can make the species more vulnerable to diseases and environmental changes.
For their study—— outlined in a paper in the journal Conservation Biology—— the team looked at genetic diversity and spread among a Chinese panda population. The ideal level of perfectly livable habitat was found to be only 80% of an area, with the remainder either too harsh or too affected by human activity.
The experts argued that pandas should ideally“be happy enough to thrive, but not so content that they don't want to move around and find new mates”. Their conclusions about what The Guardian described as this“sweet spot” are in line with the so-calledGoldilocks principle: that there can be just the right amount of something. The concept has been applied to a wide range of disciplines, from developmental psychology to economics and engineering.
Claudio Sillero, a professor of Conservation Biology at Oxford University, told the newspaper that the new findings could have implications beyond panda conservation.“Most large animals that eat meat live in increasingly fragmented landscapes”, saidSillero, who was not involved in the research,“It may well be that the messy nature of their relationship with human efforts tempts more animals to scatter or travel further, and might result in greater genetic connectivity and enhanced population persistence”.
The most recent count of pandas found that there were more than 1,800 left in the wild, putting them on the list of vulnerable, but not endangered, species.
46. What do we learn from new research about pandas
A. They are losing habitat due to the building of roads and houses.
B. They may cease to exist as a result of enjoying too good a life.
C. They may not adapt to the fragmentation of their habitat.
D. They have stopped seeking new mates for reproduction.
47. What can we conclude from the new research by scientists at Michigan StateUniversity
A. Housing development near pandas may threaten their survival.
B. The increased panda population is attributed to the fragmentation of their habitat.
C. Pandas' natural habitats are becoming less suitable for reproduction.
D. The long-time belief regarding panda conservation may be misleading.
48. Why does the author mention the Goldilocks principle in Paragraph 5
A. To compare pandas’ preferences to a psychological concept.
B. To illustrate a principle of ideal balance of panda conservation.
C. To highlight the need of perfectly livable habitat for pandas.
D. To suggest the practical application of panda conservation.
49. What can the new findings do according to Professor Sillero
A. Shed light on the conservation of most large meat-eating animals.
B. Help remove pandas from the list of endangered species.
C. Show the complexity of interactions between humans and animals.
D. Help discover new ways for the conservation of pandas.
50. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Panda Genetic Diversity Improves
B. Perfect Reserves for Pandas
C. Discomfort May Benefit Pandas
D. Habitat Destruction Threatens Pandas
D
I am expecting twins. I am not having a baby shower(宝宝派对). This would not be unusual if I lived outside of the United States, but here in America it has raised some eyebrows.
I like hosting parties and do so often. All sorts of parties can be fun. But baby showers are structured affairs, making guests go through awkward games and end up sitting in a lengthy circle so the mother-to-be can open presents. The food is strange. And to top it off, the whole event is out of respect for the mother-to-be's nine-month teetotalism(绝对禁酒).
I am not a good actress, nor am I good at showing enthusiasm. It is not an easy thing to open dozens of gifts in a short time and make each giver feel they have been properly and uniquely thanked. And that's a shame though my gratefulness is sincere. It is really a headache.
After everyone's presents are opened, I find that these showy gifts are rarely of any practical use. What will the mother possibly do with four tutus(芭蕾舞短裙) Instead, they can give me what I really want: hand-me-downs, the tried and true clothes and books that need to be cleaned out of other people's closets. Three moms at my church have offered me stuff their kids have outgrown, and they are so much better than the stuff gained in a baby shower. I get things I' ll actually use, and they leave out the work of wrapping presents and a trip to the organization, Goodwill.
My house is small; I do not have room for the unnecessary junk. Not having a baby shower is the single best way to escape the flood. In theory, getting lots of presents sounds like a good thing, but it also means there are much more things to organize, maintain, and clean.
Don't spend money on me. Instead, spend time with me. Or I can have a party, but, like a normal party, where we eat normal food and have normal conversations and everyone doesn't sit in a circle, and watch me wonder if I'm making remotely the right facial expression to convey my thanks. For that I would be grateful indeed.
51. What does the underlined word“it” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. Giving birth to twins. B. Avoiding a baby shower.
C. Participating in a baby shower. D. Holding an unusual baby shower.
52. What can we infer from Paragraph 2
A. People find the baby shower boring.
B. The baby shower is resisted by more and more people.
C. The baby shower can make both guests and the mothers-to-be uncomfortable.
D. Both guests and the mothers-to-be should not drink alcohol in the baby shower.
53. What does the author find annoying when opening presents
A. Feeling unwilling to share the presents.
B. Being shameful to receive others' presents.
C. Having to pretend to like all the gifts and each guest.
D. Struggling to open presents and express thanks properly.
54. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A. The great variety of the gifts.
B. The necessity of wrapping presents.
C. The real practicality of the gifts.
D. The goodwill of the showy presents.
55. What message does the author convey
A. She values genuine connection over tradition.
B. Baby showers are awkward and impractical.
C. She prefers used gifts to maintain her house.
D. Americans overemphasize baby shower gifts.

The brown wig was ugly! Cousin Flo brought it as a get-well gift for Mom, who was undergoing chemotherapy(化疗).“You need this before you lose your hair”, Flo insisted.Mom looked at the wig and sighed,“Florence, let's not dance until the music starts”. This was her gentle way of saying not to cross bridges before reaching them. She believed in living in the present, refusing to waste energy on things that might never happen. The wig hung on a hook as a reminder. As it turned out, she never went bald.
Though terminally ill, Mom had a joyful presence, like sunlight breaking through clouds, that drew neighbors to our door. One day, I came home frustrated after a tense encounter with a difficult client.“I dread our next meeting”, I told her. Mom set down her cup.“Honey my girl, maybe he’ ll be easier or he may not appear tomorrow. Enjoy today. Don't dance until the music starts”. The next morning, my calendar confirmed what I had feared: the client meeting was still on. I let this knowledge cast a shadow over my entire day. But when the hour arrived, the client called to rescind. I needn't have been worried that day. Mom's wisdom proved right.“Worry”, she’ d say,“is like paying interest on money you never borrowed”.
Even during chemo, she never complained. When a nervous nurse stabbed her bruised arm three times searching for a vein, Mom didn't even frown, but offered a reassuring smile instead. And then she whispered,“That's okay. Rocks on the shore endure constant waves and remain standing”.
Over time, with Mother's wisdom, I found myself pausing before panic set in,wondering if the music had actually started. I began noticing how often I paid interest on debts never incurred(欠)—— energy wasted on troubles that never came. On that snowy evening when she slipped away peacefully in our lamp-lit parlor, I had once feared being alone after her death. Then, surrounded by stillness and the warm glow, I felt only gratitude.
Decades later, I still hear her gentle voice:“Enjoy the present moment. What you fear may never happen. Don't dance until the music starts”.
