There was a girl named Emma who lived in a small coastal town. She was crazy about writing short stories. Every evening after finishing her homework, she would sit by her window, pen in hand, and write down the tales that came into her head — about brave sailors (水手) and secrets of the ocean.
One day, Emma heard that the town was holding a story-writing competition. At first, she was eager to join, but then she started to worry. What if her stories weren’t as good as the others What if people thought her ideas were silly The fear of not being good enough made her not dare to hand in her work.
Emma’s aunt noticed her stress and shared her own experience. “When I was your age, I loved baking (烘焙),” she said. “I was afraid my cakes would taste bad, so I never shared them. Then a baker told me to bake with care instead of always worrying about others’ ideas. Gradually, I realize the love we put in will finally show.” Emma lost in thought and then made up her mind to finish her story about a brave sailor who travelled across the sea. She sent it to the competition. Although she didn’t win, many readers told her that her story brought them warmth and hope.

Humpback whales (座头鲸) are large sea mammals. They spend summers eating food in cold waters and then travel to warm tropical areas in winter to have babies. These warm areas are called breeding grounds (繁殖地). These breeding grounds are very important for the whales, because they have the right temperature and few predators like killer whales. This is especially good for baby whales that don’t have much fat under their skin and can’t protect themselves well.
Now, the earth is getting warmer and warmer, and this is mainly caused by human activities, such as driving cars, running factories, and using coal, oil and gas for energy. Global warming also makes the ocean water warmer. Humpback whales need water with a temperature between 21℃ and 28℃ to have babies, as this suitable temperature helps baby whales grow quickly and stay healthy. If the ocean water gets warmer than this, the whales may have to move to new breeding grounds, but this is hard for them because they like returning to their favorite places every year.
To predict what will happen to humpback whales in the future, scientists did a special project with the help of computer models. First, they collected data (数据) about the current ocean temperature and how it has changed in recent years in the areas where whales breed. Then, they used computers to predict how the ocean surface temperature might change by the year 2100. They also tested two different situations: One is that people continue to use lots of fossil fuels, and the other is that people turn to clean energy like solar power.
The results of the project are very worrying. If people keep using lots of fossil fuels, about 67% of the breeding areas will become too warm, which will affect over half of the world’s humpback whales. Even with clean energy, about 35% of the breeding areas may still get too warm. Therefore, we must take action right now to protect these beautiful sea mammals and their breeding grounds.

B. When people should start to use clean energy

Imagine dining at your favorite restaurant, seated at the best table — next to a window with great views. It is nice and quiet, but the joy experienced during the first hour weakens over time. The reason Habituation (习惯化). That’s our brain’s habit to react less and less to things that don’t change. For a short time moving to a noisier area can bring about dishabituation, making your window seat feel fresh and more enjoyable when you return.
The same rule works for vacations. A few years ago, Tali, an employee in a travel company, went on a work trip to a sunny resort. She wondered if people had a better time at the start of their trips. She interviewed people worldwide and asked them to rate (评估) their feelings throughout their holidays. The survey reflected that joy peaked at the 43rd hour. At the end of day two was when they were happiest. Thereafter it was all downhill.
When they returned home, many still benefited from warm holiday memories. But within a week, they got used to normal life, making it hard to feel any vacation effect on their mood. This suggests you might get most from several small trips spread through the year rather than one long tour. That way, you will experience the pleasure more often.
What about bad experiences Should you divide those up too Most people want to bear the unpleasantness bit by bit. When researchers asked people whether they would like to take a break from a bad smell or just bear it all at once and be done with it, 90 out of 119 people said, “Breaks, please!”. 82 of them also said they wanted a break from an annoying noise. However, this is incorrect. Breaks broke their natural habituation to unwelcome things. For unpleasant tasks, it’s wiser not to cut them up. Otherwise, things seem worse when you return.
The results of psychological experiments (心理学实验) are clear, however, and being mindful of habituation’s powerful effect could help us all experience a bit less pain and a little more pleasure.

I believe this plan will make our spring outing unforgettable.
Yours,
Li Hua
