Mark Brown, 57, had been making films for 30 years, but he found himself feeling tired of it.“I thought, things can only go downhill.” Brown knew he needed to do something else — but what A few years earlier, he had bought his childhood house and moved in.While Brown wondered about a second career in gardening, he heard a different internal voice.“That child who used to love drawing whispered to me down the years,” he said. Some unacknowledged longing in him was brought out.
There was a great oak tree near his home.It had stood out to his young self as a “fantastical giant — a treasure home to birds, insects and animals. There was a cave inside. We used to squeeze in through this hole.” He decided to lock himself away for two months to draw it in all its glorious detail.
“While I was drawing,” he said, “there came moments when it was as though the tree was drawing itself.I had spent so much time playing in it.I could feel it.It was deep inside me.” His finished oak held “a real power”, he said.“As you walk towards it, it just grows.” Brown became a tree portraitist.
Over the next few years, he travelled across Britain and spent days with the trees selected with the help of the Ancient Tree Forum, the Tree Council and the Woodland Trust.Brown has started work on a 20-drawing series of Britain's most important ash trees.“These beautiful old ash trees are going to be lost to us,” he says.“They are 350 years old and they are dying because of a disease that we've spread.”
Drawing is not only an act of care and a demand for preservation, but it “gives me that interface between my passion for the natural world and my creativity,” Brown says.It has also given him a different perspective on the passage of time.“I'm an old man yet I'm only 71, and some of the trees I've drawn are 1,000 years old. When I'm with them and when I draw them, I think about the end of my life and the brief nature of human life that passes momentarily beneath them.”

Zhai Yuliang becomes extra busy whenever the holidays are around the corner. The Beijinger, in his 60s, has just finished a pair of palace lanterns for a courtyard home in the capital.
“The owner wants every part of them to be done in the old-fashioned way, so that they will fit perfectly with the grand style of their historical house,” says Zhai, who has practiced the craft for more than four decades. One of the most popular styles, which is also Zhai's favorite, is the double-layered octagonal (八角形的) palace lantern. It's full of Chinese elements, and features dragon heads and many other specific patterns.
However, he stresses the essential elements to be classified as palace lanterns — hand-painted scenes and Chinese knots as decoration. Most importantly, they must be created using the specific techniques, which require over 100 steps.
To make a palace lantern, a single craftsman has to do everything from the woodwork to the painting.“It takes months to make a palace lantern,” Zhai says.“It requires the skills of a woodworker, the knowledge of a mechanic, an appreciation of classical architecture, poetry, painting and an additional talent for mortise-and-tenon joints (榫卯) by hand before they can create the right carvings and layer combinations.”
Zhai has received many invitations from communities and institutes to show the charm of palace lanterns. He particularly enjoys hosting workshops where he teaches people to make lanterns themselves. He is enchanted to see the smiles of children and the expressions of adults when they complete their works under his guidance.
He believes his lifelong devotion to this craft has been worthwhile. His lanterns can be seen in such locations as the Tian'anmen Square and many overseas sites that promote friendship with China.
“Wherever you are, when you see a palace lantern, you know there's a connection to China,” Zhai says.

Pieter Bruegel's iconic 1565 painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.The work showed people harvesting wheat nearly as tall as they were.“Nowadays, however, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see that wheat is about knee-height.The reduced height is essentially a consequence of being bred (培育) along with genes for increasing production to feed a growing population,” biologist De Smet explained.
De Smet says wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can allow us to track the transformation of food crops over time.He teamed up with art historian Vergauwen, a friend since childhood, to document such artwork around the world. They have been mainly looking at things where they can spot changes in shape, color and size.
Their interest in plants in artwork began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum, where they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early 17th-century painting. It appeared to be pale and white on the inside.Biologist De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job.But art historian Vergauwen had a different idea.“No, this is one of the best painters ever from that era.So if he painted it like that, that's the way it must have looked like,” he explained.
Other paintings revealed that both red and white watermelons were grown during the 17th century.“With all the genetic knowledge we now have, we can look at how something comes about in more detail,” De Smet said.“For example, until the 18th century, European strawberries appeared tiny in paintings — they then grew in size as they were crossbred with North American varieties.”
Ultimately, the team hopes to create an online research database of historical plant artwork. They seek the contributions of art enthusiasts around the world via the social media.“However,” Vergauwen reminds, “if you're going to use, for example, Picasso to try and understand how a pear looked in the early 20th century, you might be misled.”
12.What can we learn about the painting The Harvesters
A.It shows how people successfully grew wheat.
B.It proves that wheat was much shorter in the past.
C.It explains the consequence of different breeding methods.
D.It gives clues about how wheat in the 16th century looked like.
13.What inspired the research team to start their study
A.Their preference for food crops.
B.Their friendship since childhood.
C.Their divided views on an old painting.
D.Their shared interest in Hermitage Museum.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a house far from the city lived John and his mother.John's only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it.Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees.Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breath-taking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school.Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died.Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn't want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist.“The profession of artist can't aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say.But as each day passed, John's dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury.John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice.Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day, John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away.He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma (两难境地) as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn't have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John's face lit up.
