Kites have a long history in China. They date back thousands of years. There are different materials for making kites, such as wood, bamboo, paper, and silk.
Early kites often looked like birds. And in fact, the earliest kite we know of is in the shape of a bird. Modern kites come in many cool shapes. For example, some look like dragons or planes and make you go, WOW, some look like famous people from history and you know what Some kites even have colourful lights. They look really beautiful in the night sky.
Flying kites is a very popular outdoor activity today. People like to fly kites on sunny, windy days in spring. If you're in Weifang, Shandong Province in April, you're in for a treat. The city is famous for kites and there's a kite festival every April. You can go there and see all kinds of amazing kites.

Chinese lanterns
Chinese lanterns are very special. They have a history of thousands of years and are popular all over China.
Traditional lanterns are usually made of paper or silk. The most common colour is red because it stands for happiness and good luck. Chinese lanterns come in many different shapes. Some are round, and some are in the shape of flowers and animals. Some even have beautiful pictures on them.
During festivals such as the Chinese New Year, people like to hang lanterns. At night, their soft light makes the streets look really beautiful.
Lanterns are an important part of traditional Chinese culture. I really love them!
