Prigi Arisandi enjoyed his childhood in the clean, clear waters of the Surabaya River near his home in Bambe Village in East Java.
Prigi moved to Surabaya for university in 1994. He returned home for a visit in 1996and was shocked to find the river dark brown, smelly. Worse still, after only a very short swim, he itched all over.
Driven to find out why, Prigi formed a study group called Ecoton. The group conducted water sampling, and collected data about the insects, micro-organisms and fishes in and around the river.
The studies revealed that 60% of childhood cancer cases in Surabaya province were linked to the Surabaya River, which shocked the group. Prigi's group identified various
poisonous chemicals in the water, with mercury, cadmium and lead all above the national safety standards. Tests on dead fish confirmed heavy metal pollution and micro-plastic consumption, which was eventually traced back to waste from a local paper and pulp factory.
In 2007, Ecoton took legal action. In 2008, a court ordered the governor to impose wastewater regulations on riverside companies. Today, the water is clearer and children have even started to swim in the river. Prigi also launched the“Surabaya River DetectiveProgram”, training children as“river warriors” to collect data and raise public awareness. The program is now being rolled out in other regions.
In 2017,a new threat emerged: massive dumping of used diapers(尿布) into the river upstream due to a lack of waste facilities. Wearing protective suits, gloves and masks,Prigi and his team collected and then delivered 70 kilograms of used diapers to the authorities, urging immediate action. In December 2017, Prigi filed a lawsuit against the related departments for their negligence in addressing the issue. The case is ongoing.
“People don't care for rivers if they don't understand what is happening,” he says.Sharing details about how their grandparents and great grandparents used and respected the river has raised a sense of social responsibility at the individual level. Today, locals work with scientists and local authorities to protect the river's biodiversity wonders for future generations.
24. Why did Ecoton form the study group
A. To document rare river species.
B. To detect the cause for the pollution.
C. To compare water quality across regions.
D. To meet a university project requirement.
25. What was the alarming finding of the Ecoton group about the Surabaya River
A. Changes in river species.
B. Micro-plastics in fish.
C. High heavy metal levels.
D. Connection to childhood cancer.

27. Which of the following best describes Prigi

A new Barnes & Noble bookstore has opened near the busy corner of Clark andDiversey in Chicago. The Lincoln Park store covers about 8,000 square feet, bringing fresh energy to the neighborhood. Meanwhile, another branch is planned for a large space in a former historic bank building on North Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park. Two more locations are also expected in the Chicago area. After closing its stand-alone stores years ago, the company is now returning with confidence and ambition.
According to Janine Flanigan, the senior director of store planning and design,Barnes & Noble hopes to have a bookstore in every community. Now the company is experiencing strong growth nationwide and is eager to reconnect with readers in the city.
This comeback reflects a wider change. During the pandemic, many people stayed at home with limited choices for entertainment. Reading quietly became a reliable companion. Independent bookstores first noticed this revival, as more customers searched for meaningful stories and knowledge. When large companies like Barnes & Noble begin to invest again, it shows a very hopeful sign.
Statistics support this idea. In the United States, print book sales now exceed 700million copies each year. While audio and e-books have a share of the market, the ink-and-paper version remains the most popular book format among U. S. consumers with 65% of adults having read a print book in the last 12 months.
Chicago is rich in independent bookstores. Shops such as Unabridged Books andWomen and Children First have served their neighborhoods for decades, each reflecting its local culture and charm. These small businesses give readers a sense of belonging and warmth.
Some people worry that big chains may threaten smaller stores. Yet large and small bookstores can be compatible. Big stores provide variety and scale, while small ones offer personality and personal service. Together, they keep the culture of reading alive. Books invite us to slow down, think deeply and connect with others, a comfort and powerful tool in a fast-changing world.
28. What do we know about Barnes & Noble in the first two paragraphs
A. It's opening 4 branches.
B. It closes all old stores.
C. It's expanding bookstores.
D. It buys a historic bank.
29. Which of the following best describes the print books in the US
A. They fall behind digital books.
B. They are readers' top choice.
C. They are increasingly favored.
D. They hold the entire market.
30. What does the word“compatible” in Paragraph 6 most nearly mean
A. Fiercely competitive.
B. Independently evolved.
C. Mutually enhanced.
D. Perfectly coexistent.
31. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Peaceful, Deep Reading Is Changing Modern People.
B. Rapid, Strong Growth Is Appearing In Book Sales.
C. Leafy, Green Shoots Are Growing From Pages.
D. Bright, Fresh Life Is Rising In Local Culture.
D
Over the past two years, we have witnessed remarkable advances in artificial intelligence, yet these achievements represent only the opening act. We are now entering a new era defined by autonomous AI agents—— systems that can take action independently, enhance human work, and fundamentally reshape how we live and connect. Unlike predictive AI, which analyzes data to offer forecasts and insights, or generative AI, which creates text, images, music, and code based on learned patterns, AI agents can perform tasks independently, make decisions, and even negotiate with other agents on our behalf.
In education, AI enables always-on virtual tutors. College Possible developed anAI-powered college consultant to support students where human counselors are scarce. In healthcare, AI agents alleviate administrative burdens, allowing doctors to focus on complex cases. Patients may soon have AI assistants that check on them after procedures, monitor progress, and reschedule appointments. In recruitment (招聘), Adecco Group, which handles millions of applications annually, now use AI to prequalify candidates
fairly, freeing recruiters to focus on promising applicants. On a personal level, AI agents will help manage daily routines from ordering groceries to scheduling appointments.
However, such profound change also brings challenges and fears. It is essential thatAI systems be built on trust, accountability, fairness, and transparency(透明度). Beyond system design, we must also invest in uniquely human skills like creativity and critical thinking. This need is especially urgent because the Agentic Era will undoubtedly transform jobs; some roles may disappear. Yet history shows that technological innovation often eliminates certain jobs while creating new ones and making tools more accessible to everyone.
If we navigate these changes responsibly—— guided by trust and ethical principles——AI agents can empower us to build a future of abundance and meaningful impact. The possibilities are vast, but our approach must be careful and deliberate.
32. How does the author introduce autonomous AI agents
A. By describing their potential risks and benefits.
B. By distinguishing them from other types of AI.
C. By explaining their underlying technology.
D. By highlighting recent achievements in AI.
33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. AI replacing human roles in recruitment.
B. AI used in education and healthcare.
C. AI agents benefiting multiple industries.
D. Personal AI managing all daily tasks.
34. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. Transparency in AI can address public concerns.
B. Critical thinking matters most in designing AI.
C. Creative jobs face threats in the new era.
D. New jobs may come with job losses.
35. What is the author's attitude towards the development of AI agents
A. Enthusiastic but cautious.
B. Skeptical and concerned.
C. Objective but indifferent.
D. Supportive and optimistic.

For many would-be marathoners, January is the perfect time to start training for the26.2-mile race. To finish with a goal time or even avoid injury, a scientific training plan is a must. 36
Running ability relies on three key factors, each partly genetic but all trainable. The first is the lactate threshold (乳酸阈值), the point where lactate builds up faster in the blood than it's cleared. The second is VO max, the body's maximum oxygen delivery and use during exercise. Both improve quickly with training. 37 This depends on both body shape and running technique, and tends to change more slowly.
While no high-quality trials compare different marathon plans, big data offers valuable insights. A 2024 study analyzed 16 weeks of data from 120,000 runners onStrava. 38 The fastest runners covered roughly three times as many kilometers per week as the slowest in the training. The runners, whose training involved ten long runs, were on average, nearly 50 minutes faster than those who completed none in the final race.
Crucially, most of this effective training is low-intensity. Almost all extra training distance of fast runners was completed at an easy pace, slower than marathon speed and below the lactate threshold. 39 Though, for ordinary runners, who often“work too hard”,公众号悦爱学堂 this may seem beyond understanding.
Even near the race, you can boost performance. Reducing training becomes critical—— cutting training distance three weeks before the event, can improve finishing times by up to 2.6%. 40 More importantly, the small change can greatly improve your performance on the race day.
A. This rest allows muscles to refill their energy stores.
B. The third factor is genetic factor, which can not be trained.
C. The last is energy consumption for a given distance and time.
D. Typically, top athletes spend around 80% of their time running slowly.
E. All of these runners aimed to complete their first marathon successfully.
F. Its main finding was that training distance is closely linked to race speed.
G. Without it, even the most dedicated runners may struggle to reach their goals.

It was the day of the school's annual charity fair, a bright morning filled with excited voices. As class representative, 14-year-old Leo was in charge of the colorful“Hope forHomeless” banner(条幅), meant to be the eye-catching centerpiece of their booth. He had spent three focused nights painting it with his best friend, Mia, carefully outlining each letter in bold strokes and adding tiny, twinkling stars around the border.
But in the controlled chaos of setup, his mind wandering to the sweet snack stalls nearby. He left the banner leaning against an oak tree while he ran to grab a bag of chips. When he returned, his heart sank —— it was gone. Panic surged through him. He searched wildly, but in vain. Before he could process what had happened, the teacher was beside him, asking where the banner was. Leo opened his mouth, but no honest answer came out —————— only a lie, driven by a desperate, childish fear of being blamed.“Mia... she forgot it at home,” he stuttered (结结巴巴地说), his voice trembling. The words hung in the air, and even as he said them, he knew he had just made a terrible mistake.
The whole class turned against Mia, calling her“irresponsible” and“unreliable.”Mia's eyes widened in shock. She looked at Leo, waiting for him to correct the mistake, to be the friend she thought he was. But he just stood there, pale and silent.Seeing the fear in Leo's eyes, somehow. she was somehow unable to speak against him, just standing there, silent and trembling.
For the next few days, Leo was weighed down by guilt. He wanted to confess(认错),but fear of losing his reputation held him back. The charity fair raised only half the hoped-for money, and the lost banner was to blame. He felt guilty both for his carelessness and for lying to shift the blame onto Mia.
One afternoon, he found Mia sitting alone on the playground, her eyes red and puffy from crying. Leo's chest tightened so much that he could barely breathe. Taking a deep, shaky breath, he walked over.

Sweat and Growth: Discovering the Value of Labor
Last month, I participated in a campus cleaning campaign, a truly rewarding labor experience.
My task was to clear weeds from a flowerbed. Squatting for hours, I carefully pulled out each weed, my hands soon turned green and my back aching. Sweat dripped down my face, yet
I persevered, seeing the flowerbed gradually regain its former neatness.
It is through my own sweat and labor that I truly understand the value of hard work. This meaningful practice not only cultivates my patience but also fuels my personal growth, leaving me with a strong sense of fulfillment.

Leo's voice trembled/ tightened as he apologized.“I'm so sorry, Mia —— I lost the banner and lied. It was all my fault. I was too afraid to take responsibility, and I hurt you so much.”Tears streamed down his cheeks as he waited for her anger, his head hanging low with guilt.Mia looked up, surprised at first, then her expression softened. She reached out to pat his arm gently.“I was hurt,” she said quietly,“but I knew you were scared. Let's fix this together, just as we did when we painted the banner.”
The next week, a new banner hung in the school hallway. It read clearly:“HonestyHeals, Friendship Lasts”, in the same warm style they had painted before, with tiny twinkling stars around the border. Passersby stopped to read it and learned what had happened, and those who had once judged Mia now looked ashamed, their earlier harsh words replaced by quiet respect. The simple but powerful words reminded everyone that true friendship could be mended with courage, honesty, and the willingness to face one's mistakes.
A
B 22. A 23. D
文章开头点明 Mencap是一家慈善机构,随后多次出现“Our Shop Volunteersraise money...”“Do you have a few hours a week to spare and share your time with us ”“If youhave questions about volunteering...”
根据“Your Role in Creating Change”部分中“You could be arranging itemsdonated from the public”(你可以整理公众捐赠的物品)可知,志愿者的一项工作是整理捐赠物品。 故选 A。
根据“As a Mencap volunteer you will”部分中“Have an opportunity to give backto your local community”(有机会回馈你所在的社区)可知,机构为志愿者提供了服务社区的机会。
B
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.A 27.B
第四段的核心发现包括:“60% of childhood cancer cases… were linked to the Surabaya River”(60%的儿童癌症病例与泗水河有关)、“various poisonous chemicals… all above the national safetystandards”(多种有毒化学物质超标)、“heavy metal pollution”(重金属污染)等。 D项“与儿童癌症的关联”精准对应了“60% childhood cancer cases… linked to the river”这一核心发现。
故选 A。

根据第一段“A new Barnes & Noble bookstore has opened near the busy corner of Clark and Diversey in Chicago… another branch is planned… Two more locations are also expected in the Chicago area.”以及第二段“Now the company is experiencing strong growth nationwide and is eager to reconnect with readers in the city.”

S. consumers with 65%of adults having read a print book in the last 12 months.”
根据第六段“Some people worry that big chains may threaten smaller stores.Yet large and small bookstores can be compatible. Big stores provide variety and scale, whilesmall ones offer personality and personal service. Together, they keep the culture of readingalive.”
Leafy Green Shoots Are Growing From Pages 这个比喻精准贴合文章核心: “Leafy Green Shoots” (绿叶新芽)对应巴诺书店的扩张、实体书店行业的复苏;“From Pages”(从书页中生长)对应阅读需求回升、实体书受欢迎。

依据第一段“Unlike predictive AI, which analyzes data to offer forecasts andinsights, or generative AI, which creates text, images, music, and code based on learnedpatterns, AI agents can perform tasks independently, make decisions, and even negotiate withother agents on our behalf”可知,作者是通过将自主AI智能体与预测性AI、生成式AI这两种相关AI概念进行功能对比,来引入自主AI 智能体的,而非描述其风险益处、解释底层技术或强调过往AI成就。
依据第三段“This need is especially urgent because the Agentic Era will undoubtedly transform jobs; some roles may disappear. Yet history shows that technological innovation often eliminates certain jobs while creating new ones and making tools moreaccessible to everyone”可知,智能体时代会重塑就业格局,既会导致部分岗位消失,也会创造新的工作机会,即带来职业变化。
故选A。

56. previously 57. had lost 58. the 59. and 60. what
61. realizing 62. to build 63. management 64. to 65. proves/ has proved
需用副词修饰从句“which were declining ruralsettlements”,表示“此前”。

“the key to sth”是固定搭配,意为“……

Sweat and Growth: Discovering the Value of Labor
Last month, I participated in a campus cleaning campaign, a truly rewarding labor experience.
My task was to clear weeds from a flowerbed. Squatting for hours, I carefully pulled out each weed, my hands soon turned green and my back aching. Sweat dripped down my face, yetI persevered, seeing the flowerbed gradually regain its former neatness.
It is through my own sweat and labor that I truly understand the value of hard work. This meaningful practice not only cultivates my patience but also fuels my personal growth, leaving me with a strong sense of fulfillment.

Leo's voice trembled with anxiety as he apologized.”)
1.动作/神态细节:呼应“voice trembled”,补充 Leo低头、眼泪滑落、声音颤抖等愧疚表现,强化认错的诚意;
2.语言描写: Leo 需清晰承认自身错误(弄丢横幅、撒谎、嫁祸 Mia),表达歉意,体现内心的反思与成长;
The next week, a new banner hung in the school hallway”)
1.情节推进:描写 Leo与 Mia共同制作新横幅的过程,呼应原文两人一起设计横幅的细节,体现携手弥补的诚意;
2.细节设计:新横幅可加入寓意文字(如“ Honesty & Friendship”),保留原有的星星装饰,形成前后呼应;

内心反思: think over the mistake, realize one's fault, be afraid of losing reputation(害怕失去声誉)

Tears streamed down his cheeks as he waited for her anger, his headhanging low with guilt.(他低着头,眼泪顺着脸颊滑落,等待着她的怒火。)
Passersby stopped to read the banner and learned what had happened, andthose who had once judged Mia now looked ashamed, their earlier harsh words replaced byquiet respect.
Leo's voice trembled as he apologized.“I'm so sorry, Mia——I lost the banner and lied. It was all my fault. I was too afraid to take responsibility, and I let you take the blame alone.”Tears streamed down his cheeks as he waited for her anger, his head hanging low with guilt.Mia looked up, surprised at first, then her expression softened.

M: Can't you sell it to her
W: She's only a kid. But if I give the bike away, I won't have any money to buy myself a new one.(16)
M: Hmm, that's a tricky problem.

Good evening. As you just saw in the news headlines,(17) the National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning across our region. As you can see, Hurricane Fiona is currently located in the Atlantic Ocean,(18) some two hundred miles to the southeast. However, it's traveling fast to the northwest,(18) and unless something significant changes,it' ll hit us by midday tomorrow. This is a Category 3 hurricane, with heavy rainfall and strong winds of almost 130 miles per hour. Here you can see a map of the planned evacuation(撤离)zones. These are mainly focused along the coast. If you are located within one of these areas, start preparing to leave now. Also keep an eye out for tornado warnings, particularly if you live in the plains of the region. This is also a good time for everyone to check their hurricane supplies.(19) The hurricane is likely to blow itself out within two days and is unlikely to reach the mountains in the northwest of the region.(20) Follow the station online for real-time updates on the situation. Stay safe, everyone!
