When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about electronic trash,
known as e-waste. The article said that people were burying old computers in backyards, throwing TVs into
streams, and casting cell phones in the garbage. This was dangerous, because e-waste contains poisonous
chemicals, which can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies — and people.
Alex showed the article to his friends. They spent several weeks gathering information about the
chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They researched how to handle e-waste properly and how
it could be recycled. Then, they advertised in the local newspaper, asked residents to bring their unwanted
electronics to a permanent e-waste drop-off center they set up for the town and found a responsible company
to recycle the waste.
After setting up the center, Alex’s team began to think about how to reuse some of the old computers.
“If we could restore computers ourselves and distribute them to students who didn’t have their own, we
could help students in our area and protect the environment at the same time,” Alex says. He persuaded his
school to start teaching students how to restore donated computers. Alex is especially proud of this part of his
project. He was even thanked on video by the mother of one of the students who got a free computer.
Since e-waste is a global problem, Alex and his friends are spreading their project internationally. In
2007, they shipped a fully restored media center to a school in Mexico City. During spring break, they visited
the school and helped educate the students about e-waste. They have also shipped two restored media centers
to Africa — one to an Internet café in Cameroon and one to a cultural center in Nigeria.
Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message
about safely handling e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s harmful
trash.”
24. What phenomenon did the author point out in paragraph 1
A. Electronic trash broke down slowly.
B. Readers threw away newspapers.

“Who are you ” asked two men to a third person who had just interrupted their conversation onstage. “I
am a national treasure,” he replied with pride and a smile. “A ‘national treasure’ You are ... Meng Lan, or
Huahua ” they responded uncertainly.
That drew a sound of laughing from the audience, for Meng Lan and Huahua are two famous giant
pandas, whose photos and videos have become an internet hit.
The dialogue was even funnier because it was inserted (插入) into a play about ancient history titled
Joyful Songs in Flourishing Age, recently presented at the National Museum of China. The play’s creators
said they added in bits of contemporary culture to make it lively and more relatable to today’s audiences. The
primary inspiration for the performance also was a figure of fun — an ancient pottery (陶器 ) statue of a
comedian beating a drum. The 56-centimeter-tall statue is characterized by his wide smile and a lively
position — he holds a flat drum with one arm and a drumstick in the opposite hand, and he raises a leg in a
noticeable movement.
The museum ’ s purpose in hosting the play was to cooperate with other cultural and educational
institutions to bring old cultural objects to life. The show was meant to help more people learn not only about
the clay figure itself, but also about ancient Chinese art and culture. “The music and many other kinds of
Baixi performing arts have been put into the plot.”
Yang, a professor at the Communication University of China, says producing the play inspired great
creativity among her cooperators and the production was an exploratory effort of the museum to bring about
the various presentation of their collections. While they asked for help from researchers at the National
Museum of China for historical details, they also added elements of imagination and, especially, pop culture,
such as rap and the giant panda craze, to enrich the dialogue and singing and to help people relate to the
show.
28. What does “a national treasure” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. A pottery statue. B. An Internet video.
C. A panda. D. A performance.
29. Why was the dialogue put into the play
A. To attract younger audiences. B. To make a deeper conversation.
C. To conduct a simpler discussion. D. To achieve a better understanding.
30. What does Professor Yang think of the show
A. It gets a museum famous again. B. It is a popular talent play.
C. It results from a creative exploration. D. It is short of imaginative ideas.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Ancient History Enters University Courses
B. Cultural Objects Carry Various Musical Elements
C. Creativity Is Needed to Make a Lively Communication
D. Modern Humor Is Used to Introduce Ancient Art and Culture

Recently, AI-generated art is worrying to some artists, who wonder whether they’ll be replaced by this
technology. Meanwhile, others consider AI creations as little more than high-tech copying. A mass of AI
tools have become available to the general public. The most accessible ones only require inputting a few
words to create original images, which has resulted in a wave of surreal memes (表情包). However, when a
work of art made with AI controversially won an art prize in Colorado, many realized that the technology has
more to offer than just memes.
A digital artist experimenting with AI is Zzai, who was born in Guangxi, China. While browsing
through Zzai’s attractive creations, few might guess that the artist has been experimenting with AI for only
half a year. “In May I started following some bloggers on Xiaohongshu and I was really inspired by their
creations, so I started learning,” says the artist. Based on an AI image generator called Midjourney, Zzai
creates visionary images that blend (融合) cyberpunk with Chinese culture and history. The artist’s series
Cyber Peking Opera attempts to answer the question, “When we enter the metaverse (虚拟现实空间), what
will traditional art come to ” and explores the relationship between tradition and technology while also
processing culture by way of digitization.
“The rise of AI technology is an irreversible trend,” adds Zzai. “Its scale and spread will only increase
when the physical world and virtual reality are blended.” While generating AI artwork often takes no more
than a minute, the preparatory work is time-consuming. Artists need to familiarize themselves with different
software and put together strings of text to produce the desired results.
Zzai is using his eye-catching creations to combat negative stereotypes of AI-generated art. “Opinions
are very polarized. Some are supportive of this technology, but many are resistant to change,” he says. “AI is
worthy of our imagination, and my projects make use of this technology to make bold attempts at creation.”
Through his work, Zzai demonstrates that AI is not just a tool for replication but a medium for bold,
innovative expression, offering new ways to reimagine and preserve cultural heritage in the digital age.
32. What can be inferred from the winning of an AI-made work
A. AI art has shown its true potential. B. Traditional form still holds its advantage.
C. Artists are doubtful about the technology. D. High-tech copying consists of simple memes.
33. How does Zzai create his series
A. By relying on the AI tool and his ideas. B. By combining different AI image generators.
C. By using his rich experience in traditional art. D. By learning from digital artists on Xiaohongshu.
34. Why does producing AI artwork require much time of artists
A. They need to design enough original images.
B. They have to understand the metaverse’s feature.
C. They have to spend ages in improving the software.
D. They need to grasp software operation and process texts.
35. What is Zzai’s attitude towards AI technology
A. Cautious. B. Critical. C. Confident. D. Uncertain.

Some people prefer to have a bite to eat before hitting the gym, known as a fed workout. Others would
like to wait until after exercising to refuel their bodies, called a fasted workout. To eat or not to eat, that is the
question on many fitness enthusiasts’minds. 36
If you want energy and strength for an ideal workout, you need fuel. A fed workout will provide your
body with power. 37 These benefits can result in burning more fat and shaping a slimmer body.
Muscle preservation is also an essential component of strengthening your body. Nitrogen (氮) is critical for
processing protein that builds healthy muscles. People tend to lose less nitrogen during a fed workout than a
fasted one.
Many fitness enthusiasts are not on board with this idea. They report feeling sick and inactive while
trying to exercise after eating. With a fasted workout, you may not get the usual indigestion. Experts for
fasted workouts further claim that eating afterwards makes your body use its fat reserves for energy, meaning
you will burn more fat. 38 It can cause a sudden drop in your blood glucose levels, and you may
feel dizzy. You may even be more likely to overeat.
Knowing what to eat for an ideal workout is just as important as knowing when to eat. 39
For example, if you choose a fed workout, you’ll probably lose a lot of water during an intense training, so
you should consider drinking some beforehand. With a fasted workout, it would help if you had some
nutrition right after your session is complete. Drink some water. Then, have a light meal or nutritional snack.
40 Both fasted workouts and fed activities have their benefits and shortcomings. Think
thoroughly and discuss with your fitness instructor before taking a choice.
A. Not all foods are created equal.
B. However, a fasted workout might not work for you.
C. Deciding when to eat for an ideal workout is a personal choice.
D. How your body will respond is based on your workout intensity.
E. Many experts say there’s no easy answer because it depends on the person.
F. A person doing a 30-minute session a day may have a problem with fasted workouts.
G. Eating before exercise may help you sustain longer sessions and lift heavier weights.

It was a cold winter afternoon. The wind howled outside, hitting the windowpanes with a sharp sound.
Lily, a senior high school student, stared at the math problem in front of her, feeling frustrated. She had been
struggling with it for an hour, but her mind was blank. Her mom had gone to the supermarket to buy some
groceries, leaving her alone at home.
Suddenly, there was a soft knock on the door. Lily frowned, wondering who it could be on such a cold
day. She walked to the door cautiously and looked through the peephole (窥视孔). It was an old lady with
white hair, wearing a thin coat and holding a basket in her hand. The lady’s hands were red from the cold,
and she looked tired and helpless.
“Excuse me, dear,” the old lady said weakly when Lily opened the door a little. “I’m your neighbor, Mrs.
Henderson. I live next door. My cat Mimi ran out of the house this morning, and I’ve been looking for her
everywhere. I’m so cold and thirsty… Could I come in for a cup of hot water ”
Lily hesitated for a moment. Her mom always told her not to let strangers in, but Mrs. Henderson
looked so pitiful. She remembered seeing the old lady walking her cat in the neighborhood a few times
before. Finally, she opened the door and let Mrs. Henderson in. She fetched a cup of hot water and handed it
to the old lady, who thanked her repeatedly.
As Mrs. Henderson drank the hot water, she kept talking about her cat Mimi — a small, fluffy (毛茸茸
的) white cat with a pink nose. “She’s my only companion (伙伴),” the old lady said with tears in her eyes.
“I don’t know what I would do if I lost her.” Lily felt a pang of sympathy (同情). She decided to help Mrs.
