Ⅳ.阅读理解
你以为的,不一定对 Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing. Recently, a group of Americans who taught English in other countries shared their experiences. They realized that misunder-standing happened in their daily life quite often, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific(太平洋), Lisa thought people didn’t notice her. It was a hot day. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa asked again. Still, the woman said nothing. Later, Lisa learned the woman had answered her—she raised her eyebrows(眉毛), which means “yes” in Micronesia.
Jenny remembered her experience in Bulgaria, a European country. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jenny waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.
Tom had a parallel problem when he was in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the heads. He thought some didn’t understand, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You need to know where a person is from to understand whether he or she means “yes” or “no”.

Players often shake hands before or after games. Why do people shake hands? A long time ago, most people carried knives or guns(枪) with them. If some of them decided not to fight(打仗), they would show their hands with nothing. Later on, handshaking means peace. Now we don’t have to be afraid of people with guns or knives. 俄罗斯学子的跨文化阅读之旅 Russian student Kirill Kravtsov, known by his Chinese name Lin Zirui, is studying at Peking University now. For him, reading is a very important way of building cultural bridges between countries and encouraging mutual understanding(促进相互理解).
In his conversations with students and teachers, he often introduces Russian literature(文学). He listens to their opinions of Chinese works, and finds resonance(共鸣) in books from different countries and of different types of writing.
“When we bring Chinese and Russian literature to the same table, different opinions naturally appear. Through such communication, we learn to respect differences and keep improving ourselves,” Kirill says.
Among Russian-language writers, he loves Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. For example, he realizes the treasure of human relationships in times of war from Tolstoy’s War and Peace.
“These reading experiences in my first tongue allowed me to continue to explore humanity(人性) and find spiritual resonance with my home culture during my study in China,” he says.
After coming to China, Chinese literature opened a new world for Kirill. He speaks of finding humor and resilience(坚韧) in Lao She’s Rickshaw Boy(《骆驼祥子》), which says “even the greatest difficulties can be slept through,” or seeing the changes of cities and lives in Eileen Chang’s works.
“Reading in a foreign language not only improves my language skills, but also allows me to think about the meaning of fate(命运) and life carefully through a Chinese point of view,” he adds.

The world has changed a lot, but we still shake hands most of the time, because it is still a way to show that we are friendly and polite.
