Last summer, I joined a community volunteer program to help clean up the local river. At first, I felt 1 because I had never had such an experience before. Our team leader, Mr. Wilson, handed each of us gloves and a rubbish picker, saying, “Every small action 2 a big difference.”
On the first day, the sun was shining 3 , and the riverbank was covered with plastic bags and glass bottles. Though the work was tiring, I kept telling myself, “Don’t 4 .”
By noon, my clothes were dirty, but seeing the growing pile of (一堆的) collected rubbish gave me 5 .
One afternoon, it started raining heavily. Some volunteers suggested leaving early, but Mr. Wilson encouraged us, “Challenges test 6 courage. Let’s finish what we started.” His words reminded me of my grandfather’s advice, “A river isn’t cleaned in a day; it requires 7 .”
Weeks later, when we saw fish swimming 8 the clear water and children playing safely nearby, I realized teamwork and keeping on doing a small thing can really change the world. This experience taught me that even teenagers can make an 9 to protect our planet. Now, I always carry a reusable bag 10 I want to set a good example for others.
I believe that as long as everyone takes simple steps, the world will become more and more beautiful.

Some of this waste takes 12 of years to decay (衰败). It also costs lots of money to keep 13 new things to replace the things we throw away.
In one year, a common family uses about 4,800 kWhs for such things 14 watching television, taking showers, using the dishwasher and the washing machine. Producing 15 energy will create a lot of pollution. This pollution will 16 cause global warming and is 17 to our health.
Because of all these, our family has decided to recycle everything. We collect used things, such as paper and bottles, and put 18 into different rubbish cans. After that, we take them to the 19 center. Finally, they are treated and can be used again. Recycling will help to reduce a lot of waste. We also grow our own vegetables and has already 20 hens. For many of us, the 21 place where we can get to wild animals is a zoo. These places let us see amazing animals—from big cats to tiny lizards—and what they are like. It’s an enjoyable and educational 22 for us, but is it the best environment for these animals
Long ago, people could only 23 wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum. Later on, live animals were caught by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in wildlife parks. Animal happiness was not a priority (优先权) 24 zoos, however, have transformed (使改观) the living environments for animals, making bigger enclosures (围场), removing bars, and—to some extent— 25 their natural habitats.
Some people have 26 the cruelty of keeping animals captive (圈养的) for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show that they help wildlife by educating us about conservation. In the UK, the introduction of the Zoo Licensing Act of 1981 also required zoos to 27 the public. Well—managed zoos are now also involved in 28 and funding (为……提供资金) conservation programs.
Probably the biggest voice from zoos today is that they help protect species in the wild that are under 29 due to climate change. Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Conservation at Salford University said: “There are quite a lot of different species around the planet which we wouldn’t have today without 30 .” Some zoos have captive breeding (繁殖) programs which help to preserve the 31 of species that would otherwise die out. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently highly praised Chester Zoo in the UK for its 32 work. It brought “a rare fish species back from the dead” after breeding and sending a school of golden skiffia fish back into their 33 river.
Although the debate about having zoos 34 . new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, like virtual reality. Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC: “Taking a walk through a herd of elephants in the Serengeti, I think, is going to be 35 pretty soon.” That day is sure to come.
