The AI Baby volunteer service team, founded by Sheng Jianzhong from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, has successfully helped 19 children reconnect with their families by restoring photographs of missing relatives.
Sheng was inspired to start the project in 2020 after watching a TV program that showed blurry photos of missing children. Recognizing the challenge caused by unclear photos, he got a group of students together to develop an AI system to restore them. After six months of hard work, the team developed a platform that makes old photos easier to recognize. People can share these improved photos online, print them on clothes, or show them on big posters. These methods increase the chance of a successful reunion.
Since its founding, the team has grown from four members to over 30 key members, supported by a group of 300 volunteers. Their services are free and driven by the final goal of reuniting families.
The team’s influence goes across the strait, with students from Taiwan joining the effort to help people on the island reconnect with their mainland relatives.
