The path to success isn’t always clear-cut. Julia Green knows this well. Just as she graduated from college, a
financial crisis swept the country, making it hard to get a job in journalism. Despite her growing worries, she didn’t
give up on her dream; instead, she tried a global volunteer program for her self-growth.
A year later, Green began taking random writing jobs to make ends meet, while dreaming of a day when she
could write freely and be paid for it. Afterwards, she applied for the fully funded Master of Fine Arts program, and
was accepted to study fiction writing at the University of Michigan. Though the program didn’t end up opening
many doors for her, she was paid to write and take classes.
Green has never shied away from challenging topics. Marriage, healthcare, employment and more have
featured noticeably in her writing, and she is especially impressive when it comes to music criticism. “I’ve
intentionally tried to keep my lane (道路) very wide,” she said. “It was what I had to do in the beginning. I wanted
to become a well-rounded writer.” She penned articles for a variety of websites. Slowly, she began to build a
reputation for fearlessness.
“I’ve been writing since I was 22. This craft requires that you have a tough skin,” said Green, when asked
about her writing journey. “As a writer, you are not well served by caring what other people think about you. You
have to be emotionally prepared to face rejection.”
In the past decade, Green, lacking many examples to model after, has achieved remarkable success through
great effort. She landed regular writing positions, worked in respected journals made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list,
and wrote a world-class bestseller. By any young journalist’s definition, Green had arrived.
24. What can be learned about Green after her college graduation
A. Her passion for writing never faded.
B. Further education made her optimistic.
C. Her dream came true as planned.
D. A financial crisis destroyed her dream.
25. Why did Green begin taking random writings
A. To explore a new career path. B. To boost her self-confidence.
C. To support herself financially. D. To establish her reputation.
26. What’s a distinctive feature of Green’s writing
A. Focus on family matters. B. Coverage of diverse topics.
C. Insights into school life. D. Exploration of AI technology.
27. Which words can best describe Green
A. Gifted and organized. B. Generous and considerate.
C. Patient and modest. D. Diligent and determined.

Scientists think that polar bears in southern Greenland are evolving to cope with higher temperatures and less
sea ice. Evolution is the way living things change over time in order to fit into their surroundings and improve their
chances of survival.
Climate change is threatening polar bears. They live and hunt on sea ice in the Arctic, including Greenland,
but rising global temperatures are making the sea ice melt. A team of researchers compared two groups of polar
bears — one group in the north of Greenland and the other in the south. They were once part of the same
population but some bears moved further south about 200 years ago. It is warmer in the south and there is less sea
ice. Polar bears usually have a high-fat diet, eating animals like seals, which they hunt on sea ice. The study found
that southern bears, which are trying to cope with less sea ice, are eating more plants.
The team studied the polar bears’ DNA (the chemical instructions that tell a living thing how to grow and
develop). All animals have pieces of DNA, called “jumping genes”, which can move from one place to another.
When these pieces move, they change the DNA instructions — which can change how an animal behaves.
They found that jumping genes were more active in the southern bears and some were associated with
temperature. The affected genes were linked to how the body copes with heat and how it processes fat, which
becomes important when there is not a lot of food available. Alice Godden from the University of East Anglia,
England, who led the research, called it a “hopeful study” showing that polar bears can adapt to climate change.
However, she also called it a “survival mechanism against melting sea ice” and said the animals can only adapt so
far. “We still need to be doing everything we can to slow temperature increases,” she said.
This study highlights polar bears’ remarkable ability to adapt to climate change through genetic and dietary
changes. However, adaptation alone cannot save them. Without slowing global warming, even these adaptive bears
face an uncertain future.
28. How does the writer develop paragraph 1
A. By establishing a fact. B. By determining a definition.
C. By giving an example. D. By making a contrast.
29. Which of the following is true about polar bears in Northern Greenland
A. They have a high-fat diet.
B. They prefer eating plants.
C. They adapt to warmer climate.
D. Their behavior has been changed more.
30. What’s Alice Godden’s attitude to polar bears according to the last paragraph
A. Fascinated. B. Respectful.
C. Curious. D. Sympathetic.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Warm climate ruins polar bears.
B. Climate change frees polar bears.
C. Polar bears adapt to climate change.
D. Jumping genes survive higher temperatures.

Three weeks ago, Paul Buxton went into hospital in Gibraltar to have surgery to remove a tumour (肿瘤).
While the procedure itself was fairly routine, the circumstances of the operation were extraordinary — as it was
performed by a surgeon 1,500 miles away in London.
Buxton, 62, is the first patient to benefit from remote robotic surgery in the UK and said that it was a
“privilege to be part of medical history”.
After being diagnosed with cancer shortly after Christmas, he was told that he would have to join the lengthy
waiting list and travel to England for care. However, Buxton was given the opportunity to be the first patient have
the treatment remotely and was operated on by a leading robotic surgeon, Professor Prokar Dasgupta, who sat at a
console (控制台) in London. The console was connected to a surgical robot in Gibraltar with a camera attached.
Surgical robots help smooth out shaky hand movements and can perform smaller and more precise incisions (切口)
than the human hand.
A team in Gibraltar were ready to take over as a precaution in case the connection dropped but Dasgupta said
the operation went to plan and it was “almost as if I was there”.
Dasgupta described the surgery as a “milestone” and said: “This is a historic moment. We operated on a
patient in Gibraltar from The London Clinic 2,400km away using a robot. The robot is completely controlled from
a console, using high-speed lines with a time delay of, would you believe it, only 0.06 seconds.”
The technology could one day be widely used to improve treatment all over the world. “This is very good
news for patients in Gibraltar and other remote areas. I think it is very, very exciting. The benefit is going to be
significant,” he added. Since the “test run” on Buxton, Dasgupta has conducted remote surgery twice more and will
perform the procedure again on March 14, the first live-streamed one.
32. What’s special about Buxton’s surgery
A. Its operation procedure was rare.
B. It was operated by Dasgupta in person.
C. It was a long-distance robotic surgery.
D. It was performed by surgeons from different countries.
33. How is the surgery according to Dasgupta
A. Successful. B. Complicated.
C. Routine. D. Eventful.
34. Why was a team in Gibraltar ready during the surgery
A. To assist Dasgupta with the operation.
B. To witness the historic moment.
C. To monitor the patient’s condition.
D. To take over in case of technical failure.
35. What does the underlined phrase “test run” in the last paragraph mean
A. Standard operation. B. Pilot operation.
C. Live operation. D. Simulated operation.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
They say once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget. Most of us learnt when we were kids, and many
still put on our helmets, place our feet on the pedals, and shoot off for a ride around the streets. Nowadays, cycling
has seen a boost in popularity. Then comes the question, what makes it so appealing to people to ride their bikes
once again 36
First, let’s look at the health benefits. Cycling can improve your cardiovascular (心血管的) health and burn
extra body fat. Stronger leg muscles mean you can push down on the pedals with more power and turn them more
quickly. 37 A long ride in the countryside could help you to clear your mind or destress.
38 By cycling, you save money on fuel or train fares. If you do drive into work, sometimes finding
somewhere to park can be a nightmare, whereas finding somewhere to chain your bike up can be much simpler.
Then, on the train, there are upsetting changes at stations and other commuters are always speaking loudly on their
phones. 39 And if you’re worried about safety, there are marked cycle lanes in many major cities. Wearing
high-visibility clothing, sometimes referred to as “hi-vis”, is another way to improve your safety when cycling on
the roads.
Finally, cycling can also be good for the environment. It can help you to reduce your carbon footprint. Not
releasing waste gas into the atmosphere is better for the planet and your own environment.
Believe it or not, more and more people want to cycle for their health, getting about town, their wallet, the
environment, or a combination of all of them — 40 .
A. Cyclists face neither of these issues.
B. The popularity of cycling is on the rise.
C. And cycling nowadays is out of date.
D. Its charm lies in the following aspects.
E. Cycling can be a great way to commute or get about town.
F. And cycling’s benefits aren’t just physical, but mental as well.
G. More and more people are choosing electric bikes for their daily commute.

The school’s annual charity running race was just a month away, and our class had decided to form a relay
team. As the sports monitor, I was excited — until I saw the sign-up sheet. Only three classmates had volunteered:
me, my best friend Mark, an outgoing and straightforward boy, and Leo, the quiet new kid who barely spoke to
anyone.
“We need at least six runners to compete,” I announced during lunch break, scanning the nearly empty sheet.
“Come on, guys, it’s for charity!”
Mark immediately jumped in, his voice ringing across the cafeteria. “Let me have a try. Piece of cake!” His
enthusiasm was contagious (富有感染力的), drawing smiles and soon more names filled the paper, including
Sarah, our fastest runner. Within hours, our team was formed.
The first week of training was a disaster. Under the boiling sun, Mark gathered everyone on the track, insisting
we run together. “We’re stronger when we’re united!” he kept shouting, his optimism contrasting with Sarah’s, who
jogged separately, her eyes fixed on her stopwatch. Leo ran quietly at the edge, his breath steady, never
complaining about anything but never engaging in anything either.
“It’s impossible to work with these people,” Leo whispered to me after practice, kicking a loose stone.
“Everyone’s minding their own business. Why are we here as a team ”
I stood there, words failing me. He was right. Mark’s cheerfulness was wearing on Sarah, and I was caught in
a dilemma, unsure how to pull us together. With only two weeks left, we still hadn’t mastered a single baton (接力
棒) exchange.
Then came the incident that changed everything. During a practice run, Sarah pushed hard into the turn. Her
foot landed awkwardly, and with a sharp cry, she fell down to the ground, her face pale with pain. For a moment,
everyone froze.
