Dear Sam:
Thank you for your attention to our “International Cultural Bridge” event. I would like to
recommend a silk scarf.
Among various options, the silk scarf symbolizes its elegant craftsmanship and unique
design, which combines elements of the Great Wall of China and the Tower Bridge in London. By
combining these two landmarks into one pattern, it represents friendship and connection between
the two cultures. It’s not only a piece of beautiful clothing but also a thoughtful gift that conveys
respect and goodwill.
I believe it will serve as a perfect cultural bridge. Hope this suggestion helps!
Yours,
Li Hua

Then came Ms. Green. She walked over slowly, patting his shoulder softly without a word
of blame. “It’s okay to stumble,” she smiled, “Your voice is already there; you just need to match
your heart to it.” She asked him to try again, this time pausing the recording when he faltered and
guiding him to speak the words aloud first. With her gentle encouragement, Max finished the
whole piece, his mouth moving in perfect sync with the audio, a faint confidence blooming in his
chest.
Max’s heart raced when the presentation arrived. He stood at the front, hands no longer
shaking, and began to speak, his voice clear and steady, just like the recording. When he finished
the five-minute presentation, the classroom burst into warm applause. Ms. Green nodded at him
with pride. Max smiled, realizing he had not only conquered the presentation but also stepped out
of his comfort zone, finding a brave part of himself he never knew existed.石嘴山市第一中学 2025-2026学年第二学期高一年级 3月月考

Welcome to the library
A neighbourhood guide to Copenhagen
Copenhagen may be a small city, but it features lively and characterful neighborhoods.
Depending on where you stay, you may find yourself surrounded by innovative new buildings,
trendy shops or contemporary art spaces, each one offering a different way of experiencing the
city.
N rrebro
For diverse life
N rrebro is renowned for being one of the city’s most fashionable spots. Its diverse
neighbourhood is brought together by Superkilen Park, a public space featuring a collection of
global items — from an outdoor Thai boxing ring to exercise equipment from Santa Monica.
Don’t miss Baka d’ busk, a vegetarian restaurant favored by both locals and tourists.
Nordhavn
For creative modern architecture
One of Copenhagen’s newest quarters, Nordhavn is full of creative new buildings and
reworked harbour buildings. It’s home to the new headquarters of Bjarke Ingels Group, a leading
architecture and design firm. Here, you’ll also find the Tip of Nord , a lighthouselike building
with a winter garden inside. New this winter, Nordhavn’s culture house Nordhus brings together
people aged 18 to 25 with a lively center offering group meals, games, and concerts.
Christianshavn
For historic harbourside walks
Christianshavn is one of the most charming parts of Copenhagen, where colourful,
half-timbered houses line the neighbourhood’s narrow canals, making for a scenic walk. Best of
all, climb the 400 steps to the top of the Church of Our Saviour for a 360-degree bird’s-eye view
of the city.
Vesterbro
For independent shops and cafes

A Spanish artist who creates detailed designs on fallen leaves says the process breathes new
life into the leaves while also improving his own well-being. The artist, known professionally as
Lorenzo Duran, lives in a small mountain village near vila.
Duran specializes in carving a wide variety of designs into leaves. His portfolio (作品集)
includes a frog holding an umbrella, leaping animals, the Mediterranean coastline, and rolling
ocean waves. He began his leaf art practice in 2020, inspired by an idea that came to him while
walking through a forest near his home.
The 38-year-old explains that his work brings him a sense of peace and helps him manage a
long-standing anxiety condition. Beyond these personal benefits, he hopes his art can bring joy to
others as well.
To show how the art is done, he first treats several leaves with a chemical to keep them
from drying out. Then, he chooses the one he wants to work on and places it on a cutting surface.
He begins by making a design on the leaf with a pen. He then uses a special design knife to cut the
leaf. As he works slowly and carefully, one leaf begins to take the shape of a frog carrying an
umbrella.
Duran’s unique craft (手艺 ) has gained international attention, drawing over a hundred
thousand followers on social media and he has published books on his leaf-cutting work. And
almost every month, he holds an exhibition (展览) of his work in village squares across central
Spain. “If I can make people happy by doing what I am doing, I want to do more. That’s my
driving force for what’s next,” says Duran.
4.Where does Duran create his art

C.On ocean waves. D.On an umbrella.
5.How does Duran’s work affect him
A.He earned a lot. B.He tours abroad.
C.He became famous in 2020. D.He stays healthy.

7.What can be known about Duran from the last paragraph
A.He plans to stop cutting leaves next year.
B.He earns his living mainly by selling books.
C.His leaf art has won worldwide popularity.
D.He holds a show in big cities worldwide monthly.

In the U. S., people eat more protein than they need to, which might not be bad for human
health, but does pose a problem for the country’s waterways. The nations wastewater is loaded
with the leftovers from protein digestion: nitrogen compounds (氯化化合物 ) that can feed
harmful algal blooms (藻华) and pollute the air and drinking water.
试卷第 6页,共 7页
Maya Almaraz, a biogeochemist at the University of California, Davis, and her team
wanted to see how much of this nitrogen entered into the U. S. wastewater system because of a
protein-heavy diet. The researchers found that the majority of nitrogen pollution present in
wastewater— some 67 to 100 percent — is a by-product of water people consume.
Once it enters the environment, the nitrogen can have a series of ecological impacts. It
helps algae grow much faster than they would normally, which is harmful to humans, other
animals and plants. And when the algae eventually die, the problem is not over. Microorganisms
(微生物) that feed on dead algae use up the oxygen in the water, leading to “dead zones,” where
many species simply cannot survive, in rivers, lakes and oceans.
Although it is possible to treat algal blooms, many of the current methods are not always
effective at getting rid of all of the harmful growth. Some of these methods can even lead to
additional pollution. So the best strategy for dealing with the effects of nitrogen pollution is
prevention, says Patricia Glibert, an ocean scientist at the University of Maryland. Almaraz and
her team suggest that controlling nitrogen pollution could be approached more quickly with a
change in eating habits that could save billions of dollars in the long term.
8.Which aspect of Americans’ diet does Almaraz’s research focus on
A.Its variety. B.Its effect. C.Its make- up. D.Its concept.
9.What causes “dead zones” in the water
A.No oxygen for many species. B.Death of lots of healthy algae.
C.Microorganisms’ overconsumption of nutrients. D.Poisonous chemicals released by
harmful algae.
10.What is the problem with current algal bloom treatment methods
A.They are costly. B.They may kill all algae.
C.They are slow to take effect. D.They may cause secondary pollution.
11.What does the text mainly tell us
A.It is high time to treat wild algae growth.
B.Eating too much protein harms the planet.
C.Prevention is better than cure in treating air pollution.
D.Researchers find solutions to the wastewater problem.
D
For many years, creating a sense of belonging has been a major goal for universities and
colleges that want to make all of their students feel included. However, a recent study that focuses
on minoritized ethnic (少数民族的) students in UK higher education suggests this might not be
enough. Researchers now advise a more effective goal: helping students feel they matter and build
trust.
The sense of belonging is widely used but can be vague. It often requires students to fit into
the university culture but fails to tell them how. In comparison, mattering means feeling that other
people pay attention to you, care about you and even recognize your value as a person. For many
students from minority backgrounds, feeling they matter in their everyday communication with
teachers and fellow students is more important than feeling that they belong to the university or
college as a whole.
This feeling of mattering is an important step toward building trust. Trust means having
confidence in the university’s or college’s fairness and support. The study found that when
universities or colleges actively work to show they value each student, it builds the trust necessary
试卷第 7页,共 7页
for a truly inclusive environment. This way changes the responsibility — it’s not just students
who must try to fit in, but universities and colleges that must prove they are trustworthy.
The findings call for a change in how universities or colleges support diversity (多元化). It
is not enough to just build a sense of belonging. Universities or colleges should actively help
students feel valued and build trust, creating a more supportive learning environment for everyone.
And that is what makes a big difference in students’ academic (学业的) success.
12.What is the main argument in the text
A.Universities should quit the belonging goal.
B.Building student-university trust is impossible.
C.Mattering and trust work better than belonging.
D.Minority students struggle to belong at university.
13.What does the underlined word “vague” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Unclear. B.Popular. C.Simple. D.Effective.
14.How does “mattering” differ from “belonging”
A.Mattering asks universities to change.
B.Mattering has been universities’ main focus.
C.Mattering is easier for universities to achieve.
D.Mattering relates mainly to school performance.
15.What does the last paragraph focus on
A.How academic success depends on student trust.
B.How mattering differs from belonging in practice.
C.Why belonging matters less than academic success.
D.Why universities should rethink their diversity efforts.

How to Stay Safe During a Typhoon
When a typhoon strikes, the world outside can change from calm to dangerous in just a few
minutes. The sky darkens, the wind grows wild, and heavy rain begins to fall with great force.
16 But staying calm and taking the right actions can make a big difference.
Stay indoors and keep away from windows.
During a typhoon, the safest place is always indoors. Once the storm begins, do not go
outside, not even for a short look. Close all windows and doors tightly, and stay away from glass,
which may break when hit by strong wind or flying objects. 17 Waiting indoors may
feel long and boring, but it protects you from real danger outside.
Be mindful of electricity and stay alert (警觉的).
Strong wind and rain can be dangerous with electricity. If water begins to enter your home,
turn off the main power in no time. Avoid touching wet plugs, wires, or electrical devices. Listen
carefully to what’s happening around you. Sometimes a strange sound or sudden silence can mean
trouble is near. 18
Follow official warnings and remain patient.
19 Follow the advice of local governments, even if the weather seems calmer for
a moment. If the sky suddenly becomes calm, don’t be fooled — it is the “eye” of the typhoon
that passes by. The wind can return even harder than before. So you should stay patient and wait

for official news.
20
No one can stop the storm, but you can control how you face it. Take deep breaths, speak
gently, and try to calm those around you. Help children, the elderly, or neighbors who might be
alone. Courage grows when people care for each other. Kindness stands even in the strongest wind.
A.The worst of the storm may be over.
B.It is normal to feel fear at such a moment.
C.A typhoon can change direction or strength at any time.
D.Stay calm and support each other.
E.You need to learn to fix the electricity by yourself.
F.If you live high up, this rule is especially important.
G.During a typhoon, attention saves more than strength does.

Max had always been good at fading into the background. In class discussions, he perfected
the art of the thoughtful nod. In group projects, he was a reliable researcher, rather than a presenter.
His carefully constructed comfort zone, however, was about to break apart when his English
teacher, Ms. Green, announced that each student would give a five-minute presentation on a local
historical figure to the entire class. For Max, it wasn’t an assignment but a nightmare.
The thought of standing alone on stage, with dozens of curious eyes fixed on him, sent cold
waves of panic through his chest, leaving him on pins and needles for days. After school, he
mustered up the courage to approach Ms. Green’s desk, hesitantly stammering, “I... I don’t think I

can do it.” He had expected some vague words of encouragement, but instead, she leaned forward,
listened carefully to his fears, and offered an unusual approach: “Tonight, record your voice, and
feel free to say whatever you want — no rules, no pressure.”
That night, Max followed her advice, sitting alone in his room with his phone. The first
recording was painful—rushed, shaky, and filled with awkward pauses. But he tried again, and by
the third take, something shifted. He heard a clear sentence, then another, sounding steady and
natural on his phone. It was only a small victory, yet for the first time, the task ahead felt
manageable, like a mountain he might actually climb.
The following afternoon, Ms. Green arranged a new challenge. “Now,” she said gently, “I
want you to play that recording in an empty classroom. Stand at the front and mouth the words
along to it.” Standing behind the teacher’s desk, phone clutched tightly in his hand, rows of empty
chairs staring back at him, he pressed the play button. His recorded voice filled the quiet space,
slow and sure. Halfway through, his lips faltered, falling out of rhythm with the audio. He stopped
the recording, the silence suddenly loud.
