Happy Labor, Happy Life
Last Friday, our school launched a super instructive campus labor day! It’s intended to let
every student know how awesome labor is and help all young adults get into good working
habits.
We cleaned up all the classrooms until they sparkled, watered the pretty flowers and trees
around the school, and sorted library books into neat piles. Everyone was laughing and helping
each other—no one slacked off(偷懒)!
Undoubtedly, everyone loved this activity. Our campus looks a great deal nicer now, and we
have all learned to respect all hard workers. Never will we take others’ efforts for granted from
now on. What's more, through this valuable experience, we have got a better insight into the
significance of labor and come to realize the fruit of labor is the sweetest.
读后续写
At last he came up to a cave at the edge of the bush. It seemed that they could have a rest
there. But Tom hesitated, for fear of something dangerous in it. Looking around, he saw black
smoke and blazing flames(熊熊燃烧的火焰) from the distance looking like monsters, which drove him
to make a quick decision---to carry his sister in. Dark and humid(潮湿), the place scared the little
girl to cry violently. Tom settled his sister on a rock and comforted her, tapping her on the back
gently.Gradually she calmed down, peeping at(偷偷打量) the surroundings curiously. Later, she even started to sing a nursery rhyme(儿歌) to cheer herself up.
Meanwhile, Mr. Carr got the news from his wife that the children were lost. So worried
were the couple that they set off in search of the children without delay. Yelling and praying,
they followed the footprints and had a thorough search of all the possible roads through the
bushes. Suddenly they heard the familiar sweet voice. It was Dot! Overjoyed with tears, they
rushed towards their kids. Tom briefed his story, and was praised repeatedly. Over the distant
horizon, the black smoke was fading away. With the brave boy on Mr.Carr's shoulders and the
little girl in mom's arms, the four headed to their home joyfully.

M:Hello everyone,and welcome to the school's weekly news broadcast.I'm your host,Li Ming.
Today, we have a positive local story.Last Saturday, our city library started a new program called
"The Book Buddy Shelf.(“书友书架”)"Here's how it works: anyone can buy an extra book when they shop, and then donate it to this special shelf at the library. People who cannot afford to buy books, especially children, can then take these books home for free, no library card needed. The program was a huge success in its first week. The library manager,Ms.Chen, said they received over 200 books."We are very thankful for everyone's kindness. We've got storybooks, science books, and even some cookbooks! It's wonderful to see the community sharing the joy of
reading."
We interviewed a young girl named Xiao Mei at the library. She was holding a new picture book.
She said with a big smile,"My mom said we can't buy new books this month. But I found this one
here! I'm so happy."
The "Book Buddy Shelf"is located near the library's main entrance. The library hopes this
program will continue to grow. They remind everyone that the books should be new or in very
good condition.
That's the end of today's news. Remember,a small act of kindness can make a big difference.新洲一中航天城校区高一(下)三月求实考试

Before arriving in China, I had read various books related to China, famous Chinese novels as well as
non- fiction and the seeds of my fascination were sown. Therefore, when I arrived I couldn't have been more
excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country. The food, the landmarks, the fantastic
cites and everyday life--I was burning to explore.
Yet despite my enthusiasm, learning Chinese hadn't even entered my mind. This wasn't ignorance or
laziness, but rather fright at the thought of attempting to learn what is regarded as the most difficult
language in the world. In my mind, the Chinese language was the privilege of the highly intelligent.
However, after a year in China I begun to feel uncomfortable with how many Chinese people could
speak English and yet I couldn't even speak the most basic Chinese. With these factors in mind and a thirst
for a new challenge, I determined to begin my language journey.
In the two years since starting to learn I have made measurable progress. I found it less difficult than
thought. When speaking to native Chinese speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I have
also not found it too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters.I
find studying the language relaxing and rewarding.
In spite of my progress, it has still been the challenge that has taken a lot of hard work and
commitment. The thing I find most discouraging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed. I
英语试卷 第 3 页(共 9 页)
can't always understand what's been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this.
Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient
and persistent.
My biggest harvest from learning Chinese is that it's not only reachable but can also be enjoyable.
Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a
diverse and interesting country. Now my only regret is that I didn't start earlier.
24.Which can best describe the author's original impression about learning Chinese
A.Boring B.Pleasant C.Demanding D.Discouraging.
25.What has the author found while learning Chinese
A.Speaking Chinese is the most difficult thing.
B.Many Chinese speak fluent English.
C.It isn't as tough as he once assumed.
D.It is beyond his power to learn characters.
26.What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us
A. Importance of learning Chinese.
B.Barriers of learning a new language.
C.Significant progress the author has made.
D.Certain difficulties the author met along the way.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.A New Opinion in Learning

To fight against the ballooning waistlines among people, several U.S,cites have instituted taxes on
drinks with added sugar aiming to reduce consumption, but a new research suggests these policies currently
have one fundamental flaw.
The study found sugary drinks only reduce purchasing if price tags at stores mention consumers are
paying tax when they buy the drinks.
The research included a field study at two convenience stores in San Francisco, which currently has a
tax on sugary drinks of 1 cent per ounce. Researchers varied the price tags placed on the sugary drinks over
the eight-week study:One tag that simply said the price for the 12-ounce drink($1.52) and one that had the
price and the message "Includes SF Sugary Drink Tax". All non-sugary drinks, which weren't subject to the
tax, simply had the price of the drink($1.40).
The researchers compared sales of the drinks during the study period to the two weeks before the study
began when the sugary drink tax was in effect but there were no price tags on any drinks. Results showed
sales of sugary drinks weren't lower during the two weeks, compared to sales before the tax, indicating the
tax itself didn't reduce purchases of sugary drinks.
The researchers then looked at the effects of the two different price tags. Results showed the share of
sugary drinks purchased when the tags simply showed the price wasn't significantly different from the
two-week period before the study, but did decline slightly when the tags mentioned the price included the
added tax.
In a separate online study, the researchers asked participants to estimate what the tax would be on a
can of their favorite drink that cost$1.52.The average estimate was 40 cents---much higher than the 12 cents
英语试卷 第 4 页(共 9 页)
actually demanded in San Francisco. When told the tax was only 12 cents, they reported they'd still purchase
the drink.
The findings suggest price tags should mention the tax but not the amount, for consumers tend to
overestimate how much the tax is. "If cities want these policies to be effective, they need to regulate how
sugary drinks are labeled at stores and they currently don't do that," said Donnelly, lead author of the study.
28.What does the underlined word "flaw" mean in the first paragraph
A. Weakness. B.Solution. C.Imbalance. D.Evidence.
29.What kind of price tags may discourage customers from buying sugary drinks
A.Price tags bearing sugar content.
B.Price tags with the exact tax on them.
C.Price tags saying added tax included.
D.Price tags just showing the total price.
30.Which of the following may be Donnelly's suggestion
A.Stores label sugary drinks at will.
B.Cancel sugary drink taxes at once.
C.Publicize the impacts of sugary drinks.
D.Cities urge stores to use proper price tags.
31.What might be the best title for the text
A.A New Way to Prevent Fatness
B.Eating Habits and Food Consumption
C.Sugary Drink Taxes Aren't Working Well
D.Non-sugary Drinkers Benefit from New Policies

The search for new, clean energy sources has occupied the attention of scientists and politicians for
years. One common resource for green energy is the wind.A new twist on this old resource could cause the
energy output of wind-power plants to rocket.
Standard wind-power plants rely on solid support and generally can only reach a height of 200 meters
or so. Higher than that, winds tend to be stronger and more consistent, but the challenge is figuring out how
to gain the energy from those winds.
Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences in
Germany have formed a kite-power research group. The group is working to develop kites with wings
connected to electrical generators (发电机) on the ground.
The research group's goal is to design a kite that can operate on its own for 24hours. Research has
begun, but many challenges remain, including making the generators more efficient and perfecting the
automatic flight control and the structure of the kites. Nevertheless in June 2012, they demonstrated that
their kites could operate automatically at an altitude of up to 700 meters.
Meanwhile, in Italy, researchers are working on a similar power generator that relies on kites. When
the generator, called KiteGen, senses the wind blowing, kites are released from the ends of poles with
high-resistance cables(线) to control their height and angle. These cables are able to move the kites if the
system senses incoming objects such as planes, helicopters or even individual birds. The kites themselves
are light, tough and able to reach fairly high altitudes. They circle around in the wind, which sets the core of
the generator in motion, producing electric current.
KiteGen has the potential to be very cost-effective in the long run. After the initial cost of designing
and setting up the plant, little additional investment will be necessary, apart from standard maintenance. The
英语试卷 第 5 页(共 9 页)
plant also requires relatively little space, which makes it ideal for cities and means that multiple plants can
be set up to provide even more energy.
Kite power has the potential to greatly improve on current wind-power strategies. In the future, it may
be an efficient, cost-effective supplement (补 充 ) to the other sources of energy we use, or even a
replacement for some of them.
32. What does the underlined expression“a new twist” probably mean in the first paragraph
A. A strict standard. B. A challenging task.
C. A strong motivation. D. A clever idea.
33. If the wind-power plants are higher than 200 meters, what is the problem
A. It is a waste of money.
B. It is extremely dangerous.
C. It is hard to attain the energy.
D. It is totally unrealistic.
34. Why do both of the researches adopt kites
A. Kites can fly high. B. Kites are a new trend.
C. Kites are eco-friendly. D. Kites can replace old equipment.
35. What is the author's attitude towards kite power
A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Unclear. D. Critical.

A Sea of Plastic
Scientists visiting tiny Henderson Island in the South Pacific recently made an alarming discovery.
36 Yet, the island was covered in plastic waste. They calculated there were 38 million pieces of plastic,
weighing almost 18 tons, with thousands of new pieces washing up each day.“No country has a free pass
—— we found plastic from everywhere,” said one scientist.
Plastic waste in the sea has long been known about, but only now are we discovering the true extent
(程度) of the problem. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose (降解), so all the plastic ever produced
still exists somewhere. 37
The problem gets worse as plastic breaks down into very small pieces, or“micro plastic”. 38
Humans also eat these fish, and micro plastic has even been found in tap water around the world. The
problem has spread too far to ignore. The plastic on Henderson Island accounts for just 2 seconds’ worth of
global annual plastic production. That production will be more than three times by 2050. 39
However, there are some young people working to clean up and protect the sea for future generations.
Previously the problem was considered too big to solve;collecting the plastic with boats and nets would be
expensive, would harm sea life, and would take thousands of years! But, they started The Ocean Cleanup
project, which places very long floating barriers in the Pacific. 40 They hope to reduce the polluted area
by 50% in just five years.
A. This is eaten by fish and leads to massive species loss.
B. Then there will be the same weight of plastic in the sea as fish.
C. Some steps have been taken by some countries to solve the problem.
D. Around 95% of plastics made are not recycled, and large amounts enter the sea.
E. Many problems today are side effects of things people didn't think about before.
F. Currents then concentrate the waste naturally so it can be collected and recycled.
G. It is one of the most remote places on the earth and previously untouched by humans.

One very hot morning, Mrs. Carr was occupied in doing housework in the kitchen, with her two kids
Tom Carr and his sister Dot playing in the yard. Tom was nine years old, but Dot was only three, and Tom
took very great care of his little sister.
Suddenly a man rushed hurriedly into the yard. It was Mr. May, who lived at the next station, a big
farm in Australia.“Fire!” he cried,“Fire! One of the worst fires I ever saw in my e along, Carr, and
bring all your hands.” Mr. Carr called his men out, and away they all rode.“Stay behind, sweeties!” warned
Mrs. Carr from the window of the kitchen, continuing with her work.
“Look there, Dot,” said Tom,“the brown calf(小牛) has got out of the yard!” In the hurry of the men
riding off to fight the fire, the gate had not been closed again and the brown calf was running away. Tom ran
at once to bring the calf back, and Dot ran after him. About half a mile from the farm yard the open land
came to an end, and the bush began. The calf ran among the trees, and the children followed.
The trees were not thick at first, and it was very easy to follow the brown calf through the bushes. But
soon the calf ran into a deep valley, where Tom couldn't follow it.“Oh, what a pity, Dot,” he said.“The calf
is lost now; it will get away into the bush. But give me your hand. We must go home!”
Tom began to feel very afraid. If the fire came through the bush and caught them,he and his little sister
could be burned to death. He tried to get on faster, but he could not find the way out of the bush. Tom took
his little sister on his back, and carried her for a long way, tired and thirsty.
