Silver Spring, Maryland is a center for immigrants(移民) and refugees. ManuelVera,
now known as the“Bike Dude”, found some unique and creative ways to support his comm
unity.
At first, Manuel Vera just wanted to do something productive during the COVID-19l
ockdown(封锁). So he offered to fix people's bikes for free in his neighborhood.
“Then I started thinking about all the bikes people have at home that never get used,”s
ays Vera,74, who is retired from the local power company. Soon he asked neighbors to dona
te bikes collecting dust after kids had outgrown them or adults had upgraded to new models.
Then, in his tidy little backyard shed, he'd get to work. Since space is so tight,
4
Vera prefers to work alone though not for lack of volunteers.
Vera repairs the bikes and gives them away at parks with a“Free Bikes” sign. Then he
pairs people up with the perfect new ride and watches them pedal away happily. His first giv
eaway saw six bikes go in under 30 minutes.
But Vera wanted to reach those who needed help the most. Making life better, one bike
at a time. In addition to helping the adults and kids he meets at his Free Bikes events, eager cu
stomers also come from local resettlement agencies. The agencies provide Vera with the heig
ht, gender and age of a rider, and he delivers a fitting bicycle to their door. He's happy to mak
e the trip.
Vera recalls that an Afghan man needed a way to get to his new job as a night security g
uard. Vera provided him with not only a bike and helmet but also lights and a reflective vest.
Lbrahim Alashe's new bike cuts his travel time in half.
“When I. sought bicycles, it was very expensive, so when he does this for people, it ma
kes them so happy,” says Alashe.“It was one of my dreams to get a bicycle. So it's very good.”
So far, his simple offer to repair bikes has grown into an engine of kindness, providing
wheels to over 700 people and fueling the entire community.
24. What did Mánuel Vera first offer to do for his neighbors
A. Donate bicycles to refugees. B. Fix their bikes without charge.
C. Collect unused bikes from them. D. Teach bike repair skills online.
25. Why did Vera choose to help people through resettlement agencies
A. To get more volunteers for his small shed.
B. To earn a reputation as a community leader.
C. Because giving bikes in parks was not successful.
D. To help people with the greatest needs more directly.
26. Which words best describe Manual Vera
A. Strict and serious. B. Kind and thoughtful.
C. Shy and quiet. D. Ambitious and proud.
27. What does the story mainly tell us

In 2012, an iPhone fell into my hands. This smart technology seemed like the entrance to on
ly fun and positive things like chatting with friends and blogging.
However, seven years later,I had become horribly limited to it. Recent reports show that I'm
not alone. According to a study, the average American spends five hours a day on smart devices a
nd about 2.5 of those hours are spent on social, messaging, media and entertainment apps.
It's hard to explain when the love and joy I felt for my iPhone turned into a dependency. I fel
l asleep to my phone every night and woke to it each morning. I checked the weather app every m
orning before I chose how to dress for the day. I used it to help me find my way through a city I s
hould know well enough on my own. I updated my email box every time I picked my phone up.
Just like with any addiction, my phone dependency began to influence my life. While spendi
ng time with family, I'd stare into a small screen on my lap instead of being involved in communic
ating with my loved ones. At work, my productivity levels dropped. And then, my four-year relati
onship came to an end. Eventually,I was left with years of memories and a mobile phone that coul
dn't provide enjoyable company across a dinner table, share in the joys of experiencing a concert o
r kiss me goodnight before bed.
Now, I move through life with more purpose and intention. I' ve cut back on carelessly givi
ng away my limited time and attention to my phone. Instead,I focus my efforts on being as presen
t as possible. Truly training the mind to stay present is a long and challenging road, but it's import
ant to start somewhere.
I hope you' ll take a deep look at your own phone habits and reevaluate how important a rol
e you are letting it play in your life. Whether or not you' ve reached a place in your life where you
r screen time feels problematic, there's no harm in mindfully giving your current practices some t
hought.

For years, we' ve been teaching a class on music and the mind. At the start of eac
h semester, we asked the students to complete a survey on their favorite songs and arti
sts.Students’ favorite songs and artists get longer and more varied each year and their
playlists barely overlap (重叠).
Indeed, listening to music is a deeply private and personal experience nowadays
and even more so with the introduction of the iPhone and smartphones. When teenage
rs listen to music via streaming, artificial intelligence and social media platforms team
up to suggest personalized playlists for them.
Some young people feel that AI generated (playlists make them exposed t
o something uninteresting. Their playlists are populated with songs and artists they' ve
never heard of before, yet they all sound similar. In the past, they might not have noti
ced such a situation. Their musical consumption was dominated (占主导) by the“To
p-40”artists. However, AI generated playlists have changed this, since a wider range o
f music is available.
Furthermore, if they think their AI influenced playlists are unappealing, they stil
l have the ability to search for new music just because AI doesn't prevent them resear
ching and discovering music on their own, Anything that exists, they can find. The st
ore is always open.
As young people transition (过渡) from childhood to adulthood with various styl
es of music, two seemingly opposing processes become essential —————— form
ing a unique identity while becoming part of a community. Music listening and prefer
ences play an important role in it and AI generated playlists may have the potential to
challenge this transition.
7
Fears of new technologies are common. For example, the decline of scheduled net
work TV erased lots of common ground for discussion. Will 50 million Americans ever
again watch the series ending of a TV show, as they did for Friends in 2004 And will A
I make it easier to differentiate the self, but harder to bond with others
32. What do we know about students' favorite playlists from the survey
A. Their musical tastes have become increasingly diverse.
B. They have lost interest in music recommended by AI.
C. They prefer to listen to music together with others.
D. Their playlists are dominated by the“Top-40” artists.
33. Why do some young people dislike AI generated playlists
A. The playlists are not updated in time.
B. The music in the playlists is hard to find.
C. The music in the playlists sounds alike.
D. The playlists lack personalized elements.
34. Which may the author agree with regarding young people's transition to adulthood
A. Listening to music has little effect on social bonding.
B. Young people should avoid using AI generated playlists.
C. Music preferences stop the development of personal identity.
D. Forming a unique identity and joining a community are both vital.
35. Why does the author mention the TV series Friends in the text
A. To stress the power of traditional media.
B. To introduce a popular TV show to readers.
C. To show the potential social influence of AI.
D. To compare the current expression with past ones.

Practical Health Tips for a Better 2026
As we enter 2026, focusing on simple, achievable habits is more effective than cha
sing major transformations for improving health. 36
Nutrition forms the foundation. Experts strongly recommend a balanced,whole-fo
od diet, 37 . This pattern, rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, helps manag
e weight and reduce chronic disease risk. A practical start is to fill half your plate with v
egetables at one meal each day.
8
Regular physical activity is equally crucial. Aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate
activity per week, plus two strength sessions, is highly beneficial. 38Remember, movement
accumulated in short bursts throughout the day also counts.
39 Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep. Establishing a calmin
g bedtime routine, limiting screen time before sleep, and ensuring a cool, dark sleeping environ
ment can greatly improve sleep quality.
Furthermore, nurturing mental well-being and social connections is vital. Strong relations
hips enhance resilience and are linked to better health outcomes. Managing stress through mindf
ulness, meditation, or spending time in nature is also important. 40
Ultimately, the path to better health is built on sustainable daily choices. By starting small
and focusing on these core areas —— diet, movement, sleep, and mental wellness ——you can
build a lasting foundation for vitality in 2026 and beyond.
A. For example, the Mediterranean diet is a top choice for long-term health.
B. Some people prefer high-intensity workouts at the gym.
C. Health experts emphasize that small, consistent changes lead to big benefits.
D. If feeling consistently overwhelmed, seek for professional help.
E. A sufficient amount of sleep is required.

G. The key is to find activities you enjoy, like walking or dancing.

语法填空
1.on/upon 考查介词。have an impact on/upon为固定搭配,表示“对……有影响”。
故填 on或 upon。
2.was shocked 考查动词的时态、语态和主谓一致。设空处作谓语,根据时间状语
In 2013可知应用一般过去时;主语 the whole world(单数)与提示词 shock之间为被
动关系(整个世界被震惊),所以应用被动语态。故填 was shocked。
3.probably 考查副词。设空处作状语,应用副词。故填 probably。

Healthy Lifestyle
Previously, my lifestyle was far from ideal. I was a night owl, rarely saw the
morning sun, and my diet consisted mostly of processed foods. This led to a
constant feeling of lethargy and a lack of motivation.
However, after a health check-up that highlighted some concerning issues, I
decided to make a change. I began to prioritize sleep, aiming for at least eight
hours every night. My diet shifted towards whole foods, rich in vitamins and
minerals, and I started to exercise daily, even if it was just a short walk.
The results have been transformative. I now wake up refreshed, have more
energy throughout the day, and my mood has noticeably improved. Embracing a
healthy lifestyle has been one of the best decisions I've made, and I feel more alive
and connected to my body than ever before.

Healthy Lifestyle
In the past, my lifestyle was far from ideal. I spent countless hours glued to
my phone or computer, often eating unhealthy fast food and sugary snacks.
Regular exercise was nonexistent, and I struggled with fatigue and poor
concentration in my studies. (be glued to sth全神贯注看着某物;离某物很近)
Recognizing the need for change, I decided to transform my habits. I began
with daily morning jogs, gradually increasing both the duration and intensity.
Replacing processed foods with nutritious meals, I incorporated more fruits,
vegetables, and whole grains into my diet. Had I not made these changes, I would
still be trapped in a cycle of poor health and low energy. 虚拟语气
This transformation has significantly enhanced my physical well-being and
mental focus. By embracing a healthier lifestyle, I now feel more energized,
productive, and confident in all aspects of my life.
