As a kid, Pamela Akuku spent her weekends exploring the National Museums of Kenya,
following along with her mom who worked there. Akuku became fascinated with the researchers. She saw them using various equipment and researching the fossils carefully. “But I didn’t know what they were doing at the time,” she says. “I kept asking my mom about it.”
Akuku’s mom saw her daughter’s curiosity and signed her up for the museum’s Young
Researchers Club. Akuku soon took part in mock excavations (模拟挖掘) and reconstructed bones. “I enjoyed reading and puzzles,” says Akuku. “And this was a mixture of the two.
The museum experiences helped inspire her career as an archeologist. After her four years in university, she was sure that she wanted to study archaeology. She did her master’s in South
Africa and majored in zooarchaeology (动物考古学). She is now at the Catalan Institute of
Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution in Tarragona, Spain. There, she studies how ancient humans modified (改造) animal bones. Her research is helping to reveal more about where early humans lived. She’s currently studying the remains from Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge, where
researchers previously discovered stone tools and evidence of early human ancestors going back as far as 2 million years.
Akuku gives some advice to people who want to do her job. “Be prepared to come across hard conditions. Working in this field is challenging. You have to work twice as hard just to be recognized,” Akuku said. But she has learned to deal with it. Now she always tells everyone the efforts are worthy.

Jacob’s Well is a spring in Hays County, an hour or so southwest of Austin, near the towns ofWimberley and Dripping Springs. The cool water there has lured locals and visitors to the Hill Country spot for hundreds of years. And, for almost that long, Jacob’s Well has been a siren (危险的诱惑), too.
What’s considered seriously fun for some — going around on the lip of the well, escaping the heat, spending time with friends — is a lifestyle to others. And it can be a deadly lifestyle.
Diego Adame, a 21-year-old from San Antonio, lost a flipper (脚蹼) free-diving the caves deep in the well last July and had to cut away his weight belt to make it back to the surface before his breath ran out. He even caught a part of the dive on video. “At that moment,” he said, “I
thought of death and myself dying that day.”
At least eight or nine people have died at Jacob’s Well — the exact number is hard to get
— which has made some people to call it one of the most dangerous diving spots in the world.
The danger beneath is covered by the beauty of the place. But even up top, Jacob’s Well
can be dangerous for those who make it that way. The well, by at least one estimate, is only about 13 feet wide at the opening. Yet many daredevils climb to the rocks overlooking the opening and jump straight into the well, into the upward current. Some dive. Some do flips.
All of that is forbidden by the Hays County Park Department. But, as many YouTube videos show, those rules aren’t often obeyed.

Scientists have discovered a new technique by which light can be bent around corners, inspired by the way clouds scatter (散射) sunlight. This type of light-bending could lead to improvements in many fields such as medical imaging and electronics cooling.
Daniele Faccio at the University of Glasgow, UK, and his workmates say they are shocked that this type of light scattering wasn’t noticed before. It works on the same basis as clouds, snow and other white materials that absorb light: once photons (光子) hit the surface of such a material, they are scattered in all directions.
“The light goes around and tries to get in,” says Faccio. “And eventually what happens is that it just gets reflected back because it can’t get in. This is this scattering.”
To copy this process, the team 3D printed objects from a special white material while
leaving thin tunnels (通路) within. When light is shone at the material, it travels into these tunnels and is scattered —just as light is on snow or clouds. However, instead of scattering randomly in every direction, the photons are directed to return to the tunnels by the material. The team put this to use, creating a range of objects that control light in an organised way. The researchers say their material improves light transmission much better than those without the same tunnels, and also
allows it to be directed around curves.
This method of light-bending could make use of existing tunnels of some special materials to provide new ways to carry out medical imaging. Faccio says the exact same way also works to direct heat and neutrons, and could therefore also find use in a range of engineering applications such as cooling systems.

Secrets for shopping healthier at the supermarket
Shopping at the supermarket for groceries can be an adventure tour, for food producers don’t always have your best interests in mind. 11 .
Look for a short ingredient list
When you find a packaged food with a long list of ingredients on the label, just put it back on the shelf and look for a simpler version of the food. 12 . Check the list of ingredients
every time, because a shorter ingredient list equals fewer added sugars and preservatives (防腐剂).
Learn what “organic” really means
13 . All organic farms must keep records and be inspected by officially recognized inspectors. Many supermarkets now carry some organic food, and farmers’ markets, health food

stores, and individual farms are good sources of organic food.
14 .
If you feel like the food labels “natural” and “organic” can be exchanged, well that’s
exactly what food companies want you to think. Although there’s no single set of requirements for products claiming to be natural, such labels are still supposed to be accurate. Farmers or food
companies that use the “natural” label are not forced to be inspected as a condition of using the label.
Don’t get trapped by watery foods
Water is the magic ingredient in prepared foods, and if it’s first on the list of ingredients, it’s clear that there’s a long list of additives (添加剂) to follow 15 After all, soup does take a lot of water. Since oil and water don’t mix, it takes a bunch of additives to hold everything together.
A .Be cautious of“natural” labels
B .Purchase the food with “natural” labels.
C .Water is cheap, so the food industry favors it.
D .The organic label is earned through an officially approved process.

第六部分 写作(满分 25 分)
61 .阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My father was sixty. Though he had planned on retiring at fifty-five, he was still working hard. For him, raising four children — especially now that my mother had stopped working and was at home full time — meant he couldn’t afford to retire. It also meant he couldn’t make good on something he had promised my mother. “Sweetheart,” he’d say, “I’m going to take you on a cruise (乘船游览).” He still told her that, and only these days he added, “as soon as the kids are out of college.”
I knew that putting all of us kids through college probably meant it was going to be a while before my father achieved his dream of going away with my mother on a cruise — though it didn’t stop him from cutting out ads about cruise vacations! It was cute, but it was kind of sad, too. I
remember my grandmother always wanted to go to Nova Scotia. My grandfather would always say, “We’ll go next year, sweetheart.” Then she died. My grandmother never got to see Nova Scotia. I just didn’t want my parents to wait until it was too late.
I decided to save up my money to send my parents on a cruise, even if it was a short
three-day cruise. My friends said to me, “Get real! Saving up for a cruise is something you’ll
never be able to do.” But I didn’t believe that. It was not like I could send them around the world or anything, but I didn’t think my putting together the money for a short trip was an impossible
goal. I was determined that just as my parents had made my dreams come true for all these years from my first bicycle to my first soccer camp — I was going to do all I could to make their dream of going on a cruise come true.
注意:(1) 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I started doing part-time jobs and yard work around the neighborhood.

dawn, and worked as a waiter in a restaurant at night. It wasn’t always easy. There were times
when I felt as ifI was torn up because I had to strike the balance between work and study.
However, at the thought of my parents’ long-awaited cruise trip, I persevered in the jobs no matter how tired I was. I knew that one more coin I earned meant one step closer to making their dream a reality.
One year later, Ifinally saved up enough money! I was overwhelmed by an incredible
feeling of accomplishment and excitement when I checked my savings account balance. I couldn’t wait to book two cruise tickets for them. When they opened the envelope containing the tickets,
their eyes widened with surprise and disbelief. With their eyes blurred with tears, they gave me a tight hug, thanking me over and over again. Then they spent three unforgettable days on the cruise trip, enjoying each other’s company. At that moment, I knew that all my hard work and sacrifices were worth it.
