When my mother passed away a few years ago, my father was left alone in the large house they had shared for 50 years. Without her to watch out for him, he was worried about who would find him and help if“something happened”.
My sister and I live in other states, so we hit on the idea that Dad could email us every morning when he awoke. Then “the Morning Report” was born.
He’s usually up by the crack of dawn, and his half a dozen or so sentences are waiting for
me in my inbox when I wake up. If there’s no email, I call him, or my sister does, to make sure
everything is fine. The reports have become more than an everyday check though; they’re a sort of diary, a catalyst (催化剂) for more extended conversations, and source of insight into his life.
Through these emails, Dad tells us about his routines. He might be heading to the grocery
store for bananas, going to his cardiac-rehab (心脏康复) exercise class, or having lunch with friends. Recently he told us, “I’ve climbed halfway up Mount Washington!” Given his age and distance from New Hampshire, such a hike had been unlikely.
Each email closes with “All my love, Dad.” When my mother was alive, that feeling was
normally reserved for her. Now that she is gone, he shares those feelings and his experiences with us. For me, what started as a simple security measure has spawned deeper closeness.
I’m grateful my father is still able to manage his computer and the Internet. I know the day will come when he’ll no longer be able to write the reports, and we’ll have to find other ways to
keep track of one another. But until then, they are our way of knowing that another normal day has begun.
4 .What was the original purpose of“the Morning Report”
A .To ensure the father’s safety. B .To track the father’s daily routines.
C .To keep the father from feeling lonely. D .To help the father manage his large house.
5 .What can be inferred about the father’s current life
A .He leads a lonely life. B .He stays active and engaged.
C .He misses his wife very much. D .He is learning to use a computer.
6 .Which is closest in meaning to “spawned” in paragraph 5
A .Hidden. B .Weakened. C .Shadowed. D .Created.
7 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .A Daily Email Check B .A Father’s Daily Life
C .Love Across the Miles D .Connection via Technology

A new study has found that breathing does more than just move air in and out of your lungs
— it could even be used to identify who you are. Scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of
Science discovered that each person has a distinct breathing pattern, known as a nasal (鼻的)
breathing “fingerprint”, a unique pattern that reveals clues about a person’s physical and mental health. Notably, brain scientist Timna Soroka shared, “We were able to identify differences
between less depressed and non-depressed individuals.”
The researchers originally set out to better understand how our sense of smell works. In
humans, the brain processes smell during inhalation (吸入), and this close connection between the brain and breathing led the team to wonder: could our breathing patterns reflect the way our brains are wired — and be unique to each of us To explore this question, they developed a lightweight, wearable device that tracks nasal airflow continuously for 24 hours.
The study, published in the journal Current Biology, tested 100 healthy young adults as they went about their regular routines — running, studying, resting, and more. The results showed
breathing patterns can identify individuals with 96.8 percent accuracy. “I thought it would be
really hard to identify someone because everyone is doing different things,” said Soroka. “But it turns out their breathing patterns were remarkably distinct!”
Beyond individual identification, the study also found clear links between breathing
patterns and body mass index (BMI), sleep-wake cycles, and mental health traits such as anxiety and depression. For example, people who scored higher on anxiety tests tended to have shorter inhalation periods. Importantly, the researchers noted that they merely know there is an
association between breathing and mood, but they haven’t figured out the cause-and-effect direction — whether feeling anxious changes breathing, or a certain breathing pattern causes anxiety. If the latter is true, changing how we breathe could potentially improve mood.
However, the current device has drawbacks: it uses soft tubes under the nose that can be
uncomfortable to wear and may slip during sleep, and it doesn’t track mouth breathing. The team is working on improving the device and further exploring the breathing-mood connection to
unlock more practical applications.
8 .Why does the author compare breathing patterns to fingerprints in paragraph 1
A .To argue a medical point.
B .To illustrate their uniqueness.
C .To introduce a new invention.
D .To discuss mental health issues.
9 .What can we learn about the study from paragraph 3
A .The identification results were reliable.
B .It involved participants of different ages.
C .It was difficult to tell one person from another.
D .It tested people under specially designed conditions.
10 .What is the researchers’ current understanding of the breathing-mood link
A .They know it exists but not how it works.
B .They have found a clear causal relationship.
C .They are confident it can be used for treatment.
D .They believe mood entirely controls breathing.
11 .What is the main finding of the study
A .Breathing patterns can identify individuals.
B .Anxiety is linked to shorter inhalation periods.
C .Breathing patterns reveal identity and health clues.
D .A wearable device tracks nasal airflow continuously.

“I write to find out what I’m thinking, ” wrote the great American journalist John Dos
Passos. Anyone engaged in writing understands this truth: the act of writing transforms half -
formed ideas into precise, logical thought. What sounds coherent (有条理的) when spoken often appears weak and illogical when committed to paper.
A recent MIT study provides convincing scientific evidence for this claim. Researchers
used wearable brain scanners to compare students who wrote essays independently with those
using AI assistance. The findings were clear: AI-assisted writers “consistently underperformed at brain, verbal, and behavioural levels”. They demonstrated that we need to write in order to think deeply.
This research emerges at a critical historical moment for literacy. Childhood reading has reached record lows, with nearly half of British adults not reading a single book last year. Adult literacy is declining or making no progress across most OECD countries. Notably, average IQs have begun to decline since the 1980s, along with reasoning and problem-solving abilities — a trend that is unlikely to be random.
Walter Ong’s influential work “Orality and Literacy” clarifies why writing is essential. He argued that literacy enabled Ancient Greece’s intellectual revolution. Oral cultures must “think
memorable thoughts”, relying on rhyme, emotion, and cliché (陈词滥调) to preserve knowledge. Writing, by contrast, allows for precise, complex statements that can be examined, reviewed, and
developed into logical arguments.
In our digital age, no technology has surpassed the complicated architecture of the book. While the internet offers fragmented (碎片化的) information, books provide rich context and sustained logical connections. Reading is an active process that demands engagement and
concentration — it is essentially thinking in dialogue with the text.
As our culture becomes increasingly dominated by short-form videos and
attention-fragmenting content, we risk losing the capacity for complex reasoning. Reading and
writing form the foundation of serious thought — a habit that unites history’s greatest minds.
Before we yield our cognitive development to screens and algorithms, we must carefully consider what we might be sacrificing.
12 .How does AI assistance affect writing according to the MIT study
A .It reduces deep thinking. B .It improves writing speed.
C .It enhances creative expression. D .It has little impact on brain activity.
13 .Why is writing essential for developing logical arguments
A .It relies on rhyme and emotion. B .It is easier to remember and repeat.
C .It requires concentration and engagement. D .It enables accurate and revisable statements.
14 .What is the author’s attitude towards digital media’s effect on deep thinking
A .Optimistic. B .Dismissive. C .Objective. D .Concerned.
15 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .The Decline of Modern Literacy
B .The Benefits of Reading in a Digital Age
C .Writing: The Foundation of Deep Thinking
D .Thinking: The Capacity for Complex Reasoning

Easy access to information allows for global connectivity and learning. However, it has also fueled the rapid spread of misleading and even harmful content. Here are some common traps that we should try to avoid in a digital era.
16 . Photos and videos can make a story more interesting. But due to AI software, they can be easily altered to be as misleading as texts. The site Slater once ran an experiment, in which they showed images of certain events—only some of which were real. 17 . So
don’t just rely on what you see immediately in front of your eyes. Turn to search engines, fact-checking websites or tools to uncover whether they have been represented.
Living in our own bubble (气泡) 18 And social media can make this effect
worse by recommending content we’re likely to engage with. As a result, we may feel less critical of the information that matches our assumptions, while dismissing anything that disagrees with
ours. Therefore, it is important to seek information from a range of credible sources, especially those with differing viewpoints. In doing so, we might be surprised to find information that
questions the facts we took for granted.
Reacting without a second thought. The fast pace of digital content encourages immediate reactions. 19 . Before liking, commenting, or sharing a post, take a moment to evaluate its credibility. Start by asking simple but important questions: Who benefits from this story What evidence supports the claims Are there different explanations 20 .
A .Seeing is believing
B .Watching out for misleading edition
C .But a brief thinking can make all the difference
D .We are naturally attracted to ideas that match our beliefs
E .Stories heavily playing on emotions make them more likely to be shared
F .Such a habit of reflection can prevent the unintentional spread of falsehoods
G .When questioned, nearly half the readers failed to detect misleadingly edited ones

Tom Young was on his way home from a hard day’s work at a construction site, carrying his worn-out hammer which had accompanied him through thick and thin. With each step, his
mind was filled with worry as he racked his brain to find money for his seriously ill son, Andrew, who was in great need of heart surgery.
Tom had run out of choices and time. Desperation was beginning to set in, but he refused to let his son suffer helplessly. As he walked, the weight of his troubles pressed heavily on his
shoulders. So desperate was he that he even heard a hum in his ears. The next moment the hum was entirely covered by a loud sound.
He turned in shock, and what he saw took his breath away. An expensive luxury car was
wrapped around a big tree on the other side of the street, with its front twisted and flames starting
to spring up from the car.
Without a second thought, he ran to the flaming car. He noticed that although the young
lady in the driver’s seat did not seem to have been severely injured - apparently because of the
open airbag - she was unconscious. Tom saw that the flames began to grow increasingly intense. He realized that he had to get the girl out of the car immediately because there was a high risk of the vehicle exploding at any time.
He grabbed the handle and pulled it, but the door was bent and did not open. He used all his strength and tried again, but in vain. It was a sports car, so it had only two doors, and the other one was blocked by the tree. He decided that he had to break the glass to take her out as quickly as
possible. He struck it forcefully with his fist but realized that there was no way he could break the thick glass with bare hands, and the flames were getting bigger.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
Time was running out, and his mind raced madly.

Students can transfer these credits to meet their graduation
requirements on approval by their high school.(学生可以在高中批准的情况下转移这些学分以满足毕业要求。)”
根据◆Final Grade Determination 部分中“The final grade for each course is
based on a 100-point scale. A minimum final score of 60 is required to pass and earn credits.(每门课程的最终成绩以 100 分为基准。
根据◆What if a student does not pass a course 部分中“If a student does not achieve a passing grade, the following steps are recommended: The student should schedule a
meeting with their Cornerstone academic advisor.(如果学生没有达到及格分数,建议采取以下步骤:学生应该安排与他们的 Cornerstone 学术顾问会面。)”

When my mother passed away a few years ago, my father was left alone in the large house they had shared for 50 years. Without her to watch out for him, he was
worried about who would find him and help if “something happened” .(几年前,我的母亲去世了,而我父亲独自一人留在他们共同居住了 50 年的大房子里。没有母亲在身边照顾他,他很担心如果“ 出了什么事” ,谁会来找到他并提供帮助呢)”以及第二段“My sister and I live in other states, so we hit on the idea that Dad could email us every morning when he awoke. Then “the

根据第四段“Through these emails, Dad tells us about his routines. He might be heading to the grocery store for bananas, going to his cardiac-rehab (心脏康复) exercise class, or having lunch with friends. Recently he told us, “I’ve climbed halfway up Mount Washington!”
Given his age and distance from New Hampshire, such a hike had been unlikely.(通过这些电子邮件,爸爸向我们讲述了他的日常活动安排。
Each email closes with “All my love, Dad.” When my mother was alive, that feeling was normally reserved for her. Now that she is gone, he shares those
feelings and his experiences with us. For me, what started as a simple security measure has
根据第二段“My sister and I live in other states, so we hit on the idea that Dad could email us every morning when he awoke. Then “the Morning Report” was born.(我的姐姐和我分别住在不同的州,于是我们想到了一个主意:爸爸每天早上醒来后可以给我们发电子邮件。就这样,“早间报告”便诞生了)”结合全文内容可知,文章讲述子女与远在他乡的父亲通过每日邮件保持联系,不仅保障安全,更传递亲情与爱,体现了跨越距离的爱。C 选项“千里之爱”准确概括了文章主题,是文章的最佳标题。故选 C。

46 . Modern Life in Cartoons
In the cartoon, a man is typing busily on the computer, waving to a woman beside him and saying, “Can’t talk now — I’m chatting.” It vividly shows a common social phenomenon: people are so absorbed in online chatting that they ignore face-to-face communication with those around them.
In my opinion, while online communication brings convenience, we shouldn’t let it replace real-life interactions. We should balance our time online and make more effort to talk with people around us, which helps build warmer relationships.

labor, and now it was his only hope. With a determined swing, he smashed the hammer against the window, shattering the glass with a loud crash. Carefully, he reached into the vehicle, avoiding the jagged edges, and unbuckled the unconscious young lady. With all his strength, he pulled her out, dragging her a safe distance from the car just as the flames roared fiercely, engulfing the vehicle in a fiery blaze. Soon, Tom’s heroic deed went viral.
The girl was sad to know Tom’s trouble from the local news. She learned about his struggle to find money for his son’s heart surgery and felt a deep sense of empathy for his situation.
Remembering how he had risked his life to save her, she decided to take action. With her family’s connections and resources, she organized a fundraising campaign to help cover the medical
