主语+谓语动词+由引导词(that ,whether等)引导的宾语从句
宾语从句可由不同引导词引导,结构如下:
1. However, thanks to a piece of amber, scientists now know that this idea is wrong. (P68)
2. They also help us understand that life on earth has always changed. (P69)
3. But the find proves that it did 35 million years ago. (P69)
4. In the future, amber may also help us discover if other species have changed over time.(P69)
5. Research shows that they are a completely new species. (P69)

读下列句子。划出句中的宾语从句。
根据引导词的不同,宾语从句可分为以下三种:
1. 由that引导的宾语从句;
2. 由if/whether引导的宾语从句;
3. 由疑问词引导的宾语从句:
what, which, who, whom, whose (疑问代词)

主语+谓语动词+that引导的宾语从句
(一) that引导的宾语从句
1. 结构:
并非所有动词后面都可接that引导的宾语从句。常接that引导的宾语从句的谓语动词有:believe, expect, explain, feel, hear, hope, imagine, prefer, promise, report, say, see, tell, think, understand, warn, wish 等。
(陈述语序)
that无任何词义,只起连接作用,在非正式文体中可以省略
I believe (that) he will not do such a silly thing.
= I don’t believe (that) he will do such a silly thing.
*think, believe, suppose, guess等动词作主句的谓语,且主句的主语是第一人称 I 或we时,若后面的宾语从句表示否定概念,一般将否定词not转移到主句的谓语中。即“否定转移”。
观察两个句子的区别
that 无任何词义,只起连接作用,常可省略。
我相信他不会做如此愚蠢的事。
1) I’m afraid (that) he can’t come.
2) I’m so pleased that you will come tomorrow.
*主句为由“连系动词+形容词”构成的“系表”结构,常接that引导的宾语从句。这类形容词多表示感情,如happy, glad, pleased, sad, sure, afraid等等。
恐怕他不能来了。
我很高兴明天你来。
2. that在宾语从句中的省略与保留
由并列连词连接的两个或多个that引导的宾语从句,只有第一个从句中的that 可以省去,其余并列宾语从句中的that都要保留。
He said (that) the book was very interesting
and that (不省略) all the children liked to read it.
it作形式宾语代替that引导的宾语从句时,that不能省略。
They took it for sure that we would help them.

当宾语从句的主语是this、that 或者被 this、
that修饰时,that不能省略。
① She said that this book was very useful.
② He told us that that was why he was late.
当that作介词except, in等宾语时不能省略。
These two pens are alike except that they're different colours.

(二) whether/if引导的宾语从句
陈述语序
I want to know whether/if he lives there.
我想知道他是否住在这儿。
Mary asked me whether/if I could help her.
玛丽问我是否能帮助她。
1.当宾语从句表达不确定的概念时,从句要用whether或if 来引导,不能用that;
2.whether和if不能省略。
1) He asks me whether/if Lucy will be
back in two days.
他问我露西是否两天后回来。
2) He asks whether/if we will go fishing
on Sunday.
他问我们是否周日去钓鱼。
whether/if常放在ask,wonder,can (could) you tell me等之后,表达不确定的概念,意为“是否” 。两者常可换用,口语中多用if。
只用 whether 不用 if 的情況
在whether ... or not的固定搭配中;
I can't say whether or not he will come on time.
在介词后,只能用whether;
I'm interested in whether he joins the army.
宾语从句置于句首时,只能用whether;
Whether he will come, I'm not sure.
在动词不定式前只能用whether。
Tomorrow the teacher will tell us whether to have a test.
① I think (that) he'll return in an hour.
② He said (that) he missed us very much.
③ Mary asked me whether/if I could help her.
④ We knew (that) summer is after spring.
宾语从句的时态取决于主句的时态:
1. 主句使用现在时,从句可使用任何时态;
2. 主句使用过去时态,从句使用相关的过去时态。
3. 当宾语从句是客观真理或不可改变的自然现象时,宾语从句须用一般现在时。

Good news for nature lovers! Today, we’ve learned about the amazing secrets in amber. Scientists have proved that dinosaurs once had feathers—a surprising fact found in Southeast Asian amber. Also, a piece of European amber showed that a flower species once grew there 35 million years ago. These secrets help us understand nature better! We wonder whether more unknown species will be discovered in amber in the future.
Work in pairs. Look at the notice and write a short passage about exploring nature. Use the words and expressions from the reading passage and the Useful expressions to help you.

For hundreds of years, people believed that all ancient ants looked like those of today. However, a team of scientists made an amazing discovery. They found a new kind of ant inside a piece of amber.
By studying the amber carefully, the scientists saw that this ancient ant had much longer legs than modern ants. Research shows that these long legs helped the ant climb a type of flower. But those flowers no longer exists in our world.
It proves that animals can change their bodies to live in different environments over millions of years. It teaches us that even a small, old thing like a piece of amber can be like a window, showing us secrets about life long ago.
