Enric Sala is a former university professor who wrote the obituary (讣告) of ocean life, and quit academia to become a full-time conservationist.
In 2008, he founded National Geographic Pristine Seas, a project that combines exploration, research, public policy and media to inspire the creation of marine protected areas. The project aims to protect at least 30 percent of the ocean by 2030 for the benefit of nature and humanity. Less than eight percent is currently protected.
Spending weeks at sea, diving thousands of hours, and seeking out some of the least explored and understood places in the ocean, Sala leads a team of determined scientists and filmmakers who together work to inspire the creation of protected areas where marine life can thrive — while ensuring effective management for years to come.
In June 2021, Sala was awarded the National Geographic Society’s Hubbard Medal for his commitment and dedication to protecting critical areas of the ocean.
“In the last century alone, we have removed over 90 percent of the ocean’s large fish, yet less than eight percent of the ocean is under some kind of protection. We’re still learning about the damage from destructive fishing activities,” Sala writes. “But it is possible to restore the ocean’s benefits to people and the planet. All we must do is rewild the sea. The only catch is that we can’t wait. We have less than a decade to act.”
Sala states that preserving the planet’s wild places, on land and in the ocean, is a matter of human survival and economic importance in his book, The Nature of Nature: Why We Need the Wild. The process of rewilding “allows nature to do the hard work for us,” he explains. “It’s not too much to say that if we protect nature, she will protect us as well.”
4. What do we know about Enric Sala
A. He still works as a university professor. B. He works with a team of divers and scientists.
C. He aims to protect half of the ocean by 2030. D. He was awarded for his efforts to protect the ocean.
5. What can be inferred about the current marine protection efforts
A. They are effectively protecting marine life. B. They are not extensive enough to be effective.
C. They have already restored ocean benefits. D. They are well-managed in most protected areas.
6. Why is the current decade so important to ocean conservation
A. It’s the last chance to protect 30% of the ocean.
B. We are running out of time to act before it’s too late.
C. The damage from destructive fishing is becoming more apparent.
D. The ocean’s large fish population has almost completely vanished.
7. What is the text most probably taken from
A. A feature story. B. A business textbook. C. A leisure magazine. D. A travel website.

The open water of Bayou Bienvenue now hosts an island of native trees, grasses, and recycled glass. The artificial island is helping researchers understand a new approach to coastal restoration.
Created by a team of scientists and a glass recycling company, the roughly 10-metre-diameter (直径) island is made from a mix of glass ground into sand and Mississippi River sediment (沉积物). A second island next to it, also dotted with plants, is made fully from sediment. The team wants to know if there are any differences in how the plants grow to figure out if the glass sand mixture could be a workable material for restoring coastal ecosystems.
Sea level rise and erosion (侵蚀) sweep away sediment and flood (淹没) plants along the coast. The ecosystems there, such as wetlands and salt marshes (盐沼), act as a protection between storms and areas further inland. To restore these damaged ecosystems, ecologists often rely on sediment collected nearby. But there’s a limited amount available, and the digging process can disturb surrounding habitats. By using glass sand instead, restoration projects can reduce the amount of sediment required and chip away at another problem: Millions of metric tons of glass end up in landfills each year instead of getting recycled.
According to a study by Sunshine Van Bael and her colleagues, wetland plants were grown in a greenhouse in five-gallon buckets. These plants were grown in containers filled with Mississippi River mud (淤泥), glass sand, or an even mix of both. The glass was progressively processed into different sizes. The plants grown in a coarse-grained (粗粒的) glass-sediment mix exhibited similar growth characteristics to those grown in only sediment. Another group’s study revealed that two salt marsh grasses native to Mississippi grew well in a fifty-fifty mix of glass sand and fill soil, while one species grew even in a 75 percent glass sand mixture.
Researchers believe that the success of these studies suggests great promise. However, it is possible that this method is not specific to each region, and research needs to be location-specific to determine the glass sand’s ideal size and proportion across different coastlines.
Van Bael and her colleagues will keep a watchful eye on the islands in Bayou Bienvenue for the next five years, with plans to create two more.
8. What problem does using glass sand help reduce
A. The rising of sea level. B. The overflow of glass waste in landfills.
C. The pollution in the Mississippi River. D. The lack of storm-prevention systems.
9. Which of the following is true about Van Bael’s greenhouse study
A. It was conducted in an open field.
B. It contained varied particle sizes of the glass.
C. It proved plants in pure glass sand grew better.
D. It found a grass thriving in a 75% glass sand mixture.
10. What is a potential limitation of the glass sand method
A. Its long-term effects are unknown. B. It could potentially harm the plants.
C. It requires too much energy to produce. D. It calls for tailoring to different locations.
11. What is the researchers’ attitude towards the glass sand method
A. Skeptical and critical. B. Neutral and indifferent.
C. Optimistic but cautious. D. Supportive without doubt.

Weighted blankets have gone from a therapeutic tool to a mainstream wellness must-have, promising better sleep and reduced stress for anyone struggling to unwind. But do they deliver on these bold claims
Occupational therapists have used weighted blankets since the 1970s to help children with autism (自闭症) and adults with sensory processing disorders. They became commercially available in the 1990s, but remained largely within special needs communities.
That has changed dramatically in recent years when companies began targeting what they call the “casually anxious”— essentially, anyone struggling with modern life’s stresses. The marketing worked: Time magazine even named the weighted blanket one of the top 50 “inventions” of 2018.
The concept behind weighted blankets is appealingly simple. Typically weighing between 2 and 13 kilograms, they use what therapists call “deep pressure stimulation”. The gentle, even pressure across your body mimics the sensation of being held or hugged.
The research picture is more nuanced (有细微差别的) than what the marketing suggests. Several studies do show promising results, but with important qualifications. A study found that weighted blankets improved insomnia (失眠) symptoms over four weeks in people with major depression, mood disorder, anxiety and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Smaller studies have shown similar patterns. However, these studies all focused on people with diagnosed mental health conditions, not the general population that companies are now targeting.
This is where the science diverges (偏离) from the marketing: reviews of the research consistently show that benefits for healthy people are much harder to prove. While weighted blankets may help people with clinical anxiety or sleep disorders, there’s insufficient evidence that they benefit casual users without existing mental health conditions.
This doesn’t mean weighted blankets are entirely useless for healthy people. Shift workers, who must sleep during daylight hours when their brains are naturally alert, might find them helpful in combating the known health effects of irregular schedules. Healthcare workers, firefighters and pilots who rely on strategic power naps could benefit from the faster sleep onset.
12. Why have weighted blankets become a mainstream product recently
A. They were proven to help everyone sleep. B. Their price became much more affordable.
C. Therapists started to recommend them more. D. Companies advertised them to stressed people.
13How do weighted blankets work
A. By providing a hug-like feeling. B. By using a special warming technology.
C. By helping to regulate body temperature. D. By releasing mentally beneficial chemicals.
14. What can be inferred about studies of weighted blankets
A. They show promise for people with real health issues.
B. They prove weighted blankets work for everyone.
C. They stress the short-term use of weighted blankets.
D. They see children as a potential target market.
15Which healthy group might still find weighted blankets useful
A. People who work regular office hours. B. People who want to feel more relaxed.
C. People who sleep at odd hours. D. People who feel exhausted.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is accelerating faster than most classrooms — or nervous systems — can keep up with. It’s not just changing what you need to learn but how you need to think and what you need to truly thrive. Metaskills (元技能) are the new literacy.
Meta-learning (learning how to learn):
Meta-learning isn’t just a strategy — it’s a mindset. ____16____. Neuroscientifically, this involves metacognitive circuits in the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮质) and curiosity-linked dopamine pathways connecting learning to reward and motivation. When you reflect on how you got to an answer — not just what the answer is —you build durable, transferable learning habits that work across any field or new technology.
Adaptability:
Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change. It’s the capacity to update mental models when reality shifts — to adapt calmly, to stay flexible without losing focus. Adaptability depends on prediction error processing. ____17____. The more we practice adjusting to uncertainty, the more efficient and resilient those neural systems become.
Cognitive reframing (重构):
Reframing taps into the brain’s executive networks to reinterpret a stressor as a challenge. Studies show that effective reassessment downregulates the amygdala while preserving accuracy and agency. When someone says “I can’t keep up with AI”, reframing helps them say, “AI is my lab — I get to experiment.” ____18____.
Managing attention:
Attention is a very finite resource. Conventional AI selected what you saw; generative AI now creates perception and reality. The competition for attention is no longer passive. ____19____. This constant content creation floods working memory, reorganises focus, and erodes (侵蚀) the deep cognitive effort real learning requires. To reclaim your attention — to pause, filter, and focus — is now a survival skill for the mind.
____20____:
This is the ability to co-create with AI, combining human instinct with machine generation. Rather than seeing AI as a shortcut, you can use it as a different thinking partner — generating possibilities, then improving them with judgment. This is the new creative literacy: not just making, but guiding creativity with intention.
A. Meta-creativity
B. Discomfort master y
C. It’s adaptive, highly personalised, and persistent
D. When expectations fail, the brain readjusts, creating new pathways
E. This wires the learning environment from threat-based to growth-based
F. People who communicate clearly and resolve tension will thrive in hybrid human-AI teams
G. It’s the ability to observe how you learn, adapt your methods, and improve your approach over time

It was 11 pm when Alex Conrad saw a woman on Main Street Bridge. Her car was parked strangely on the shoulder, hazard lights (危险警示灯) flashing weakly. She was standing beside the driver’s door, one arm stuck inside the window, and her body bent awkwardly as if she were struggling to break free.
Instead of taking a shortcut (抄近路) across the bridge, Alex slowed down. Something felt off. (有些事感觉不对劲) . Why would anyone be stuck with their car this late — especially in March, when Wisconsin’s night wind cut through jackets like a knife He circled back, parked 15 feet behind her car with his own hazard lights on, and stepped out.
“Hey, you okay ” he called. The woman jumped then winced (疼得一咧嘴) . She was in her 20s, with her hair messy from the wind. Her free hand grasped the car door handle so tightly that her knuckles (指关节) had turned white.
“The door — it won’t open,” she replied, pulling her arm again. “I stopped because the engine started making strange noises, and when I got out to check it, the door lock jammed. The window was halfway down, so I leaned in, trying the inside handle. Suddenly, the window rolled up. Now my arm’s stuck between the window and the frame,” Her voice cracked. Alex could see red marks forming on her arm where the metal was digging into her skin.
“I’m Alex. Let’s take it slow,” he said, walking over carefully. The woman told him her name was Mia. She’d been driving home from her part-time job at a supermarket when the car started acting up.
For the next 20 minutes, Alex tried gentle fixes. He pulled the outside handle — locked. Without hesitation, he rushed to the passenger side, opened the door, and climbed across the seat. He desperately pressed the window switch and pulled the inside handle, but nothing happened.
Mia’s arm started to shake. “What if my arm goes numb (麻木的) ” she whispered.

One officer called a local repair service to have Mia’s car taken away, while Alex handed her his jacket. After everything was settled, Mia waved warm goodbyes to the officers and Alex before taking a taxi home. Back in his car, Alex realized that his small choice had turned a frightening situation into a safe resolution. Sometimes, he thought, the best thing you can do is simply stop and care.
