As the New Year approached, I felt a mix of excitement and determination. Like many others, I wanted to make resolutions that would help me improve my life. I realized that simply hoping for change was not enough; I needed to take action.
First, I decided to spend less time talking and more time doing. In the past year, my friends and I often wasted hours talking and chatting about unimportant things. With important exams coming up, I knew I had to focus on my studies. This year, I promised myself to prioritize my schoolwork and put in the effort needed to succeed.
Next, I recognized that I needed to cut down on my screen time. I loved watching TV and browsing the internet, but I realized these activities took away valuable time I could spend studying. Instead of getting lost in shows or videos, I planned to dedicate more time to reading and reviewing my lessons. This way, I could stay on track with my studies and be better prepared for my exams.
I also thought about my involvement in sports. While I enjoyed playing games with friends, I realized that my academic performance was more important. I decided to reduce my time spent on sports and focus more on my studies. I knew that doing well in school would have a greater impact on my future.
Finally, I made sure to keep my resolutions simple and realistic. In the past, I often set too many goals and ended up feeling overwhelmed. This year, I focused on a few key resolutions that I could easily remember and stick to. As the New Year began, I felt hopeful and ready to take on the challenges ahead. I was determined to make this year one of action and achievement!

D. He would shorten screen time and commit to academic goals.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author’s resolution this year
A. Complex. B. Reasonable. C. Unclear. D. Unrealistic.
C
What we define as beautiful depends on who sees it — the young or the old, through the Asian or Western eyes or the beauty experts.
For example, the Kayan tribe in Southeast Asia considers women with long brass neck rings to be the most beautiful. The longer the neck rings, the more beautiful they are regarded. In many Asian cultures, having fair skin is seen as the ideal. In contrast, Hollywood stars like Angelina Jolie and Jessica Alba represent beauty in Western culture, admired for their smooth skin and attractive features.
In the fashion industry, being slim is often linked to beauty. Many models are extremely thin, which can lead to serious health problems such as eating disorders. To tackle this issue, countries like Spain and Italy have banned models who are too thin from participating in fashion shows. This change aims to protect models’health and influence young people who look up to them.
Youth is another quality often associated with beauty. This has led to an increase in cosmetic treatments, as many people seek quick ways to appear younger. Unfortunately, some individuals visit unlicensed practitioners for these treatments, which can be very dangerous for their health.
However, focusing too much on outer beauty can cause us to overlook inner beauty. As Confucius said, “Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.” For instance, Susan Boyle was judged by her appearance, but when she sang, everyone was amazed by her beautiful voice. This shows that true beauty comes from within.
In conclusion, we should value inner beauty and understand that a person’s true worth is not only about their looks. By recognizing the importance of character and kindness, we can develop a better understanding of what beauty really means.
8. How do Kayan tribe women show their beauty
A. By wearing long hair. B. By having fair skin.
C. By wearing brass neck rings. D. By having slim figures.
9. What can we infer about the effect of fashion models on young people
A. They mislead beauty standards.
B. They promote healthy body images.
C. They help young people accept their looks.
D. They inspire young people to be confident.
10. What does the author aim to convey
A. Fashion models should always be thin.
B. Beauty standards are the same everywhere.
C. Youth is the most important part of beauty.
D. Inner beauty matters much more than outer appearance.
11. What would be the best title for this passage
A. The Leading Role of Beauty B. The True meaning of Beauty
C. The Great Importance of Beauty D. The Profound Influence of Beauty
D
The development of computers has significantly changed the way people work especially in the area of remote employment.
Since the end of World War II, computers have evolved from large, mechanical machines to powerful, compact devices that fit in our homes and offices. This technological advancement has made it possible for many office tasks to be performed from home, allowing for greater flexibility and efficiency in the workplace. As a result, remote work has become increasingly popular among various professions, offering individuals the chance to balance their personal and professional lives more effectively.
However, while remote work has its advantages, it also comes with several challenges. Some people enjoy the freedom that comes with working from home, but many thrive in social environments provided by traditional offices. The ability to interact with colleagues fosters teamwork and creativity, which are essential for success in many jobs. Additionally, when work and home life mix together, it can lead to stress and difficulties in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This overlap makes it hard for individuals to separate their work responsibilities from their personal lives, which can negatively impact their well-being.
As technology continues to improve, the trend of remote work is likely to grow. Many creative professionals, such as writers, designers, and artists, have long embraced the flexibility of working from home. With advancements in technology, more employees may have the opportunity to choose their work environment. However, it is important to remember that humans are social beings who often need interaction and a structured environment to perform at their best. Without these elements, some individuals may struggle to stay motivated and productive.
In conclusion, while computers have made remote work feasible, it is essential to consider the social and psychological effects of this shift. The future of work may involve a combination of remote and in-office arrangements, allowing individuals to enjoy both flexibility and social engagement. Finding a balance between these aspects will be crucial for maintaining productivity and job satisfaction in the modern workplace. As we look ahead, it is important to recognize the value of both technology and personal connection in shaping our work experiences.
12. What can we infer from the second paragraph
A. Remote work is only popular in a few professions.
B. Computers have only been used in offices since World War II.
C. The evolution of computers has no influence on work flexibility.
D. The development of computers contributes to the rise of remote work.
13. What is one of the challenges of remote work
A. It destroys the creativity of employees.
B. It confuses the work with personal life.
C. It causes employees to lose their freedom.
D. It makes employees feel impossible to keep social ties.
14. Which is closest in meaning to “feasible” in paragraph 5
A. achievable. B. memorable. C. comfortable. D. changeable.
15 What is the author’s attitude towards the future of remote work

It’s strange, but I don’t really remember much about the hurricane itself. It all happened so quickly. I was sitting in my room with my cat, Smartie, on my lap, when the roof just flow off. All of a sudden, there was sky where the roof had been. I was so frightened that I just froze.
Mom tried to get out quickly, but it was already too late by then. The rain was coming down so hard and so fast. Our street turned into a river in seconds. We were going nowhere.
At first I was pleased we could stay at home, but soon it got really tough. Without a roof, staying inside was too dangerous. There was water everywhere, but we couldn’t drink any of it otherwise we’d get really sick. We just had drinking water that was sent to us by helicopter, but it was never enough. It was August, so it was really, really hot and it smelled so bad everywhere! I just spent the days watching the boats going up and down the street and looking out for Smartie.
He had disappeared the moment the storm hit.
Living in the open air, we became breakfast, lunch and dinner for the mosquitos. But Mom said that whatever happens, we should always try to see the good side of things. It was difficult to stay positive, though. We had lost our home and everything in it, including Smartie. All we had left were the clothes on our backs. But as Mom kept on reminding us, we were all together and safe. Mom’s words made us feel better. I remember us all lying under the midnight sky and looking up at the stars. Because there were no lights, we could see the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper and the Milky Way. It was amazing! Even though we had lost a lot, moments like those gave us hope for the future.
